Preparation of Forward osmosis composite membrane with Chitosan/Tannic acid co-deposition interlayer and its fluoride removal performance

Hao Zhang,Jingyi Liang,Zhikang Li,Feng Xiao,Yanhui Wu,Chaojie Zhang

The treatment of fluorine-containing wastewater has very important significance for environmental protection. Forward osmosis (FO), using osmotic pressure gradient as driving force, can remove ion from aqueous solutions effectively. The key to improve the separation efficiency of FO is to prepare the membrane of excellent performance. In this work, chitosan (CS)/tannic acid (TA) interlayer was constructed by the strategy of polyphenol/polyamine liquid phase co-deposition, then three-layer FO membranes with more uniform surface and higher hydrophilicity were obtained by interfacial polymerization on the interlayer. And the effects of co-deposition time and mass ratio of CS/TA on the performance of FO treating simulated fluorine-containing wastewater were also investigated. Experimental results showed that the optimal co-deposition time was 60 min and the mass ratio of CS/TA was 0.5. The water flux of the TFC-CS/TA 0.5 – 60 membrane (TFC means thin film composite, 0.5 is the mass ratio of CS/TA, 60 means the co-deposition time is 60 min) reached 22.3 LMH and the fluorine rejection was 99.93%, when it was applied to treat model waste water containing fluoride of 300 mg/L. In FO test on fluorine-containing wastewater from a semiconductor factory, compared with commercial Aquaporin Inside TM FO membrane, the water flux of TFC-CS/TA 0.5 – 60 membrane was 49.3% higher than that of the commercial membrane. This study provides a new idea for the preparation of high-efficiency FO membranes and has a good prospect for the treatment of industrial fluorine-containing wastewater.

Zr-BTB nanosheets assist in optimizing the structure of forward osmosis membranes to enhance the lithium concentration performance

Miaolu He,Leihao Feng,Jin Wang,Yunlong Gao,Weiting Zhang,Lujie Nie,Jiajin Hao,Jiaqi Wang,Rui Miao,Lei Wang

Recently, low-energy forward osmosis (FO) technology has been employed in the lithium concentration stage during the extraction of lithium from brine sources. The interlayer FO membrane is renowned for its exceptional structural characteristics; however, challenges remain in selecting suitable interlayer materials and exploring their control mechanisms on amine monomers. As interlayer materials, traditional 3D nanomaterials are prone to detachment, while traditional 2D materials without micropores can increase the transmission resistance of water molecules. This study introduces a novel FO membrane utilizing Zr-BTB nanosheets with 5.4 Å micropores as the interlayer material. Based on detection and simulation calculations, it was found that the increase in steric hindrance and interaction forces jointly slowed the diffusion of amine monomers in the presence of the Zr-BTB interlayer. This results in a thinner separation layer, facilitating water transport. The interlayer also plays crucial roles in preventing defective pore formation in the separation layer and assisting in intercepting salt ions. The Zr-BTB interlayer membrane exhibited a water flux of 29.14 L m −2  h −1 and a reverse salt flux of 0.16 g m −2  h −1 , which are superior to those of many FO membranes reported in the field. The prepared membrane also has excellent performance in lithium concentration applications, and its separation mechanism was explored by MD simulations.

A low-cost and high-performance thin-film composite forward osmosis membrane based on an SPSU/PVC substrate

Zheng Ke,Zhou Shaoqi,Zhou Xuan

A low-cost sulfonated polysulfone (SPSU)/poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) substrate based high-performance thin-film composite (TFC) forward osmosis (FO) membrane was fabricated in this work. The results showed that the morphologies of the substrates were looser and more porous, and the porosity, pure water permeability, surface hydrophilicity, and average pore size of the substrates significantly improved after the SPSU was introduced into the PVC substrates. Furthermore, the SPSU/PVC-based TFC membranes exhibited rougher, looser and less crosslinked polyamide active layers than the neat PVC-based TFC membrane. The water permeability obviously increased, and the structure parameter dramatically declined. Moreover, the FO performance significantly improved (e.g. the water flux of TFC2.5 reached 25.53/48.37 LMH under FO/PRO mode by using 1.0 M NaCl/DI water as the draw/feed solution, while the specific salt flux exhibited a low value of 0.10/0.09 g/L). According to the results, it can be concluded that 2.5% of SPSU was the optimal blend ratio, which exhibited the lowest sulfonated material blend ratio compared to the data reported in the literature. Hence, this is a feasible and low-cost fabrication approach for high-performance FO membrane by using the cheap PVC and low blend-ratio SPSU as the membrane materials.

Antibacterial and desalting behavior of forward osmosis membranes engineered with metal ions

Xinjian Tang,Wenxiu Hu,Xiaoxue Ke,Yuming Zheng,Qingchun Ge

The current Covid-19 aggravates membrane biofouling issue caused by bacteria and viruses which are widely present in water. Herein we synthesized a series of polyamide (PA)-based membranes engineered with distinct metal ions (Cu 2+ , Fe 3+ ) via one-step metal-ligand ligation for forward osmosis (FO) separation. The antibacterial and desalting behavior of membrane were investigated by systematically varying the influential factors including the charge status, complexation ability and antibacterial mechanism of metal ions as well as testing conditions. All the newly synthesized membranes exhibit better performance with markedly increased water permeability and selectivity . Therein the Fe 3+  − membrane increases water fluxes by 93% (FO mode) and 112% (PRO mode) relative to the nascent PA membrane with 0.5 M NaCl as the draw solution. Both Cu 2+ and Fe 3+ on membrane surface dramatically improve the membrane bactericidal efficacy against Escherichia coli via destroying the bacterial phospholipid layer. Remarkably, the metal ions on membrane surface are easily regenerated after being consumed by bacteria by simply immersing the membranes into the corresponding nitrate solutions. The separation performance and antibacterial properties of the regenerated membranes are comparable to those of the fresh membranes. When using brine from reverse osmosis process as the draw solution, the Fe 3+ membrane recovers water from brackish water up to 70% higher than the nascent PA membrane. This study provides a practical strategy to develop FO membrane with sustainable antibacterial activity and desalination performance.

Thin-film nanocomposite forward osmosis membrane with polydopamine @UiO-66-NH2-modified polypropylene support and its antifouling property

Chunhui Du,Jintai Hu,Fen Chen

Polypropylene (PP) porous flat membrane is ultrathin and has high porosity, which is suitable for the support of forward osmosis (FO) membrane. However, its high hydrophobicity is its Achilles heel. In this study, dopamine and UiO-66-NH 2 were co-deposited onto the surface of PP support, and then interfacial polymerization was performed to fabricate a thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) FO membrane. The reaction-generated polydopamine improved the hydrophilicity of PP membrane, and at the same time enhanced the adhering of UiO-66-NH 2 to the support. The experimental results indicated that the UiO-66-NH 2 nanoparticles were anchored evenly on the surface of the support, which improved the water flux of FO membrane from 11.1 LMH (TFC, TFN-0 without UiO-66-NH 2 ) to 20.7 LMH (TFN-0.1, with 0.1 wt% UiO-66-NH 2 ) using 1 mol/L NaCl as the draw solution in FO mode. Compared with TFC membrane, TFN-0.1 membrane also exhibited relative lower specific salt flux (~0.252) and structural parameter (~379 μm). When separating sodium alginate foulant, the normalized water flux recovery ratio of TFN-0.1 was remained 0.89, and most of the fouling was reversible, as for TFC membrane the data decreased to 0.76 after 2 cycles of operation. These results suggested that UiO-66-NH 2 modified FO membrane exhibited good permeation and antifouling property.

FO process for simultaneous wastewater pre-concentration and seawater concentrate disposal: Impacts of seawater concentrate on membrane fouling in long-term operation

Weilong Song,Shuyue Liu,Ming Xie,Pin Zhao,Xinhua Wang

Using seawater desalination concentrate (SC) as DS of FO for simultaneous wastewater pre-concentration and disposal of waste SC has presented good application potential. Nevertheless, knowledge of membrane fouling mechanisms in FO process using SC as DS, especially the influence of SC on membrane fouling, is still inadequate, mostly due to the limited operation time in previous studies. Hence, present study focused on membrane fouling behaviors in FO with SC as DS, with particular focus on impact of SC in long-term operation. The results indicated that using SC as DS induced noticeable aggravation of membrane fouling on both active layer (AL) and support layer (SL) sides of FO membrane in long-term operation, which was not observed in short-term operation. On AL side, accumulation of Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ via back-diffusion from SC became significant during long-term operation, thereby substantially altered fouling behavior on AL side, resulting in more refractory membrane fouling. On SL side, calcium-based scaling was formed both in and within the porous matrix of SL during long-term operation. Accordingly, a combined membrane cleaning strategy (NaClO for AL +  HCl and EDTA for SL) was developed. The results could facilitate the application of SC as an economical and feasible DS source.

Fabrication of BaSO4-based mineralized thin-film composite polysulfone/polyamide membranes for enhanced performance in a forward osmosis process

Haiyang Jin,Yangbo Huang,Hao Li,Ping Yu,Yunbai Luo

Novel BaSO4-based mineralized thin-film composites (TFC) as forward osmosis (FO) membranes were fabricated through depositing barium sulfate on the surface of the prepared polysulfone/polyamide (PSf/PA) membranes by adopting an approach named surface mineralization. BaSO4 particles were deposited by an alternate soaking process (ASP) with aqueous solutions of barium chloride (BaCl2) and sodium sulfate (Na2SO4), separately. Membranes with different mineralization degrees were prepared by changing the number of ASP cycles. The mineralized TFC PSf/PA FO membranes were characterized by a variety of methods in accordance with membranes structure and surface properties. It turned out that the mineral coating made of BaSO4 particles was evenly distributed on the membrane surface and the existence of this coating made the membrane surface became more hydrophilic and negatively charged after mineralization. The FO performances of the mineralized TFC membranes were also tested and compared with the original PSf/PA membrane and the commercial CTA-W FO membrane with pure water as the feed solution and a 1 M NaCl solution as the draw solution. The mineralized TFC PSf/PA membranes displayed better water permeability and salt rejection than the original PSf/PA membrane and the commercial FO membrane. The results revealed that mineralized TFC PSf/PA membranes showed great potential for further development of FO applications.

Decorating a Loose Defect-free Hybrid Selective Layer on a Smooth Intermediary: An Effective Way for Unexpected Performances of Nanofiber-based Forward Osmosis Membranes

Nan Li,Yu Han,Feiyue Yu,Wei Wang,Qin Liu,Xiaoming Qian,Zhiwei Xu,Hui Deng,Mingjing Shan

Graphical A novel composite forward osmosis (FO) membrane was fabricated by introducing a chitosan (CS) sublayer between nanofibers and polyamide (PA) layer, which was beneficial to forming thin and defect-free PA layer and improved binding strength between substrate and selective layer. A novel composite forward osmosis (FO) membrane was fabricated by introducing a chitosan (CS) sublayer between nanofibers and polyamide (PA) layer, which was beneficial to forming thin and defect-free PA layer and improved binding strength between substrate and the selective layer. Results exhibited low reverse salt flux (0.73 gMH) while maintained high water flux (85.4 LMH), which were better than that in other reports. In order to further improve permeability of membranes, oxidized multiwall carbon nanotubes (OMWNTs) were added into PA layer based on the optimized sublayer. The crosslinking degree of PA layer was reduced, leading to loose PA layers, which promoted the increase of water flux. After modifying, water flux reached 96.9 LMH without sacrificing salt rejection. It was worth mentioning that PAN/CS composite FO membrane, which could adjust microstructure of support layer and selective layer respectively, may provide a promising way for preparing membranes with anticipated separation performance.

Fouling mechanism of forward osmosis membrane in domestic wastewater concentration: Role of substrate structures

Xian Bao,Qinglian Wu,Jiayu Tian,Wenxin Shi,Wei Wang,Zhiqiang Zhang,Ruijun Zhang,Bing Zhang,Yuan Guo,Shihu Shu,Fuyi Cui

An elaborate structural and chemical depth profile of the thin film composite (TFC)-forward osmosis (FO) membrane is indispensable to the complete understanding of how the substrate structures influence the in-situ polyamide (PA) layer formation and ultimately the wastewater concentration performance of the resultant TFC-FO membrane. Herein, the X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy paired with Ar 2500 + gas cluster ion beams sputtering is introduced for the first time to conduct the depth profiling analysis of the PA-based TFC-FO membrane. The fine chemical and structural properties of the TFC-FO membranes were successfully reconstructed from the depth profiles, which revealed that the sponge-like substrate with small surface pores favored the formation of a smooth and thin PA layer with a highly cross-linked inner layer, while the macroporous substrate with large surface pores facilitated the development of a rough and defective PA layer with deep formation inside substrate pores. Benefiting from the thin effective thickness and dense inner selective layer, the PA layer formed on sponge-like substrate exhibited superior water permeability and salt selectivity. Besides, even suffered from more serious internal concentration polarization within substrate, the smooth PA layer surface with fewer carboxylic groups endowed the sponge-like substrate supported TFC-FO membrane with much higher anti-fouling capacity and average water flux than its counterpart. However, the TFC-FO membrane with highly cross-linked PA layer still exhibited poor NH 4 + -N rejections (56.93 ± 0.95%). This work opens up a frontier for depth profiling of the ultrathin PA layer and provides theoretical guidance for the preparation of high-performance and anti-fouling TFC-FO membrane.

Forward osmosis membrane doped with water-based zirconium fumarate MOFs to enhance dye pollutant removal and membrane antifouling performance

He Miaolu,Feng Leihao,Cui Qi,Li Yushuang,Wang Jiaqi,Zhu Jiani,Wang Lei,Wang Xudong,Miao Rui

Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) can be applied to enhance the property of forward osmosis membranes. However, organic solvents can easily remain in organic synthetic metal–organic frame materials and cause membrane fouling and a decrease in membrane permeability. In this study, water-based Zr-fumarate MOFs were synthesized and doped into the membrane active layer by interfacial polymerization to provide a water-based MOF-doped thin-film composite membrane (TFC membrane). It was found that doping the water-based MOFs effectively improved membrane hydrophilicity, and nanowater passages were introduced in the active layer to improve permeability. The water flux of the water-based MOF-doped TFC membranes was increased by 21% over that of the original membrane, and the selectivity performance of the membrane was improved while keeping the salt rejection basically unchanged. Additionally, the water-based MOF-doped TFC membrane showed good removal efficiency ( R d  > 94%) and strong antipollution performance in the treatment of dye pollutants.

Bicontinuous porous substrates by polysulfone/2-pyrrolidone binary system for high-performance forward osmosis membranes

Nan Sun,Shucheng Mo,Yuanhang Cai,Yingshuai Zhao,Yaling Han,Yijun Zheng,Tao He

Forward osmosis (FO) has shown great promise in concentrating enriched lithium brine during lithium extraction from salt-lake brine due to low energy consumption and ecologically friendliness. The effective utilization of enormous osmotic pressure of freely available MgCl 2 onsite requires highly selective FO membranes with high flux, which calls for thin-film composite forward osmosis (TFC-FO) membranes of highly interconnected substrate and defect-free separation layer. Herein, for the first time, we employed 2-Pyrrolidone (2-PD) as the solvent to prepare FO substrates via the non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) for preparing TFC FO membranes. Owing to its weak solubility, the PSf/2-PD polymer solution shows high viscoelasticity, resulting in spinodal demixing and a bicontinuous porous structure, unlike the closed finger-like pore structure observed in the PSf/DMAc binary system. By further reducing the casting humidity and coagulation bath temperature, the substrate surface pore size was optimized to prepare high-performance TFC-FO membranes: the TFC-30%-3 exhibits a water flux of 20.0 LMH and low specific reverse salt flux of 0.23 g/L at AL-FS mode, showing competitive performance compared to the state-of-the-art membranes. These results imply that 2-PD, as an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional solvents, shows significant promise for FO substrate preparation using a simple polymer/solvent binary system.

FO membrane fabricated by layer-by-layer interfacial polymerisation and grafted sulfonamide group for improving chlorine resistance and water permeability

Xinning Zhang,Paula Jungwon Choi,Noman Khalid Khanzada,Jiawei Sun,Pak Wai Wong,Jiaxin Guo,Li Ling,Di Wu,Am Jang,Alicia Kyoungjin An

This study presents a layer-by-layer interfacial polymerization approach to enhance the chlorine resistance and water permeability of thin-film composite (TFC) polyamide (PA) forward osmosis membranes . The PA film was prepared by self-polymerization using 3,5-Dihydroxybenzoic acid (DHBA) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) with addition of 4-amino-benzene sulfonamide (4-ABSA), which is a sulfonamide monomer , on a polysulfone (PSF) support layer. The cross-linking structure and surface characterisation of the DHBA-ABSA membrane was studied systematically. FTIR results showed the successful grafting of the sulfonamide group on the membrane surface. Compared with the MPD-TMC membrane, the water flux of three modified membranes—DHBA, ABSA, and DHBA with ABSA—improved by 27.6%, 44.0%, and 67.6%, respectively, and reverse salt flux decreased by 9.9%, 12.3%, and 16.2%, respectively. Furthermore, the chlorine-stability test using 200 ppm NaClO indicated stable long-term performance under different pH values. The stable sulfonamide structure of ABSA with N-H group effectively prevented chlorine from directly attacking the active layer and improve the chlorine-stability of the membrane. In addition, the abundant hydrophilic groups on ABSA and DHBA monomers formed a hydration layer with water molecules on the membrane surface through hydrogen bonding , which enhanced the permeability of the TFC-PA membranes. The findings of this study demonstrate the DHBA-ABSA membrane's wider application potential in water and wastewater treatment processes .
