Research on the mechanisms of polyacrylamide nanospheres with different size distributions in enhanced oil recovery

Shuo Wang,Zhongli Tang,Jin Qu,Tongbo Wu,Yuxing Liu,Jing Wang,Xiaofei Liu,Ye Ju,Fenggang Liu

Crosslinked polyacrylamide microspheres are widely used as in-depth flooding agents in petroleum development due to their unique properties of thickening, salt-resistance, high-temperature resistance, low cost, etc. To solve the problem of their injections in heterogeneous reservoirs, polyacrylamide nanospheres were synthesized. However, mechanisms of polymer nanospheres in enhanced oil recovery were not investigated comprehensively. In this study, we synthesized polymer nanospheres with different size distributions and studied their mechanisms in enhancing the oil recovery. First, the effects of polyacrylamide nanospheres in enhanced oil recovery of heterogeneous sand-packed tubes was explored by sand-packed tube oil displacement experiments. Second, the rheological properties of polyacrylamide nanosphere dispersion were explored using a rheometer. Third, through the visual microchannel experiment, the mechanism of polymer nanosphere emulsion on the removal of the residual oil film was explored. Finally, through the crude oil removal experiment, it was found that polymer nanospheres with a particle size of about 54 nm can cooperate with surfactants to accelerate the removal of oil droplets.

Roles and thresholds of viscosity and interfacial tension in surfactant flooding for residual oil recovery

Jiangtao Wang,Yingxue Hu,Xiaoyue Chu,Gangzheng Sun,Tao Lu

Surfactant flooding is an effective chemical enhanced oil recovery (EOR) technique, but the quantitative roles of viscosity and interfacial tension (IFT) in residual oil mobilization remain unclear. In this study, the physicochemical properties of surfactant solutions were first characterized by systematic measurements of viscosity and IFT, and the dynamic mechanisms of water flooding and surfactant flooding were further investigated using a pore–throat model, consisting of channels with and without pore-like structures, combined with direct numerical simulations to identify viscosity and IFT thresholds under different wettability conditions. The results show that residual oil distribution is strongly influenced by wettability: in strongly water-wet and neutral-wet conditions, oil remains as droplet- or cluster-like ganglia within pore spaces, whereas in strongly oil-wet conditions it persists as continuous wall-adhered films that are more stable and difficult to mobilize. Mechanistic analysis further indicates that the controlling parameters of mobilization differ across wettability states, reflecting the interplay between pore geometry, wettability, and interfacial forces. Based on phase diagrams constructed from simulation results, distinct regulation strategies were formulated for different wettability conditions: reducing IFT is most effective in strongly water-wet systems, a combined effect of viscosity enhancement and IFT reduction is required in neutral-wet systems, and achieving ultra-low IFT is essential in strongly oil-wet systems. Collectively, this work establishes viscosity and IFT thresholds as quantitative design criteria for surfactant flooding, providing both mechanistic understanding and practical guidance for surfactant formulation and injection optimization in chemical EOR.

Novel Anionic–Nonionic Surfactant Based on Water–Solid Interfacial Wettability Control for Residual Oil Development

Lin Li,Yue Sun,Xiao Jin,Zizhao Wang,Yunbo Dong,Caili Dai,Mingwei Zhao,Yining Wu

Irreversible colloidal asphaltene adsorption layers are formed on formation rock surfaces due to long-term contact with crude oil, and large amounts of crude oil adhere to these oil–wet layers to form residual oil films. This oil film is difficult to peel off due to the strong oil–solid interface effect, which seriously restricts further improvement in oil recovery. In this paper, the novel anionic–nonionic surfactant sodium laurate ethanolamide sulfonate (HLDEA) exhibiting strong wetting control was synthesized by introducing sulfonic acid groups into the nonionic surfactant laurate diethanolamide (LDEA) molecule through the Williamson etherification reaction. The introduction of the sulfonic acid groups greatly improved the salt tolerance and the absolute value of the zeta potential of the sand particles. The experimental results showed that HLDEA altered the wettability of the rock surface from oleophilic to strongly hydrophilic, and the underwater contact angle increased substantially from 54.7 to 155.9°. In addition, compared with LDEA, HLDEA exhibited excellent salt tolerance and enhanced oil recovery performance (the oil recovery was improved by 19.24% at 2.6 × 104 mg/L salinity). Based on nanomechanical experimental results, HLDEA was efficiently adsorbed on the core surfaces and regulated microwetting. Moreover, HLDEA effectively reduced the adhesion force between the alkane chains and the core surface, which facilitated residual oil stripping and oil displacement. This new anionic–nonionic surfactant affording great oil–solid interface wetting control has practical significance for the efficient development of residual oil.

Cleaning Oil-Based Drilling Cuttings with Synthetic Gemini Surfactants

Xuan Yan,Yucheng Liu,Zhengmeng Hou,Lina Yuan,Jun Yang,Wenxin Dong

The chemical cleaning method is the simplest approach for degreasing oil-based drilling cuttings (ODCs), with the effectiveness of the treatment relying mainly on the selection of the surfactant and the cleaning conditions. However, achieving the standard treatment of ODCs directly using conventional surfactants proves challenging. In light of this, this study introduces a synthesized and purified Gemini surfactant named DCY-1. The structure of DCY-1 was confirmed through Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analyses. The characterization in this article encompasses the use of an interface tension meter, nanoparticle size analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and infrared oil measurement. The critical micelle concentration (CMC) of DCY-1 was determined to be 3.37 × 10–3 mol/L, with a corresponding γcmc value of 37.97 mN/m. In comparison to conventional surfactants, DCY-1 exhibited a larger micelle size of 4.52 nm, approximately 24.52% larger than that of SDS. Moreover, the residual oil rate of 3.96% achieved by DCY-1 was the lowest among the chemical cleaning experimental results. Through a single-factor experiment, the optimal cleaning ability of DCY-1 for ODCs was determined as follows: a surfactant concentration of 3 mmol/L, a temperature of 60 °C, an ODC/liquid mass ratio of 1:4, a cleaning duration of 40 min, and a stirring speed of 1000 rad/min. Under these optimal conditions and after merely two cleaning procedures, the residual oil content of ODCs was reduced to 1.64%, accompanied by a smooth and loose surface structure.

New Technique for Enhancing Residual Oil Recovery from Low-Permeability Reservoirs: The Cooperation of Petroleum Hydrocarbon-Degrading Bacteria and SiO2 Nanoparticles

Kai Cui,Hailan Li,Ping Chen,Yong Li,Wenxue Jiang,Kun Guo

Residual crude oil production from low-permeability reservoirs has become a huge challenge because conventional recovery techniques are inefficient. Nanofluids as a new type of oil-displacement agent have become a hot topic in recent years to enhance oil recovery (EOR) in reservoirs. However, the imperfection of agglomeration, dissolution, and instability of nanofluids in reservoir environments limit their ability to drive oil. Here, a novel “microbial-nanofluid” composed of petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria (PHDB, namelyBacillus cereus) and SiO2nanoparticles was proposed as a potential new technology for enhancing residual oil recovery. The micromodel displacement test results showed that the optimum composite concentration of “microbial-nanofluids” were PHDB (7.0%,v/v) and SiO2nanoparticles (100 mg/L), and the residual oil recovery was increased by 30.1% compared with waterflooding (68.8%). Moreover, the morphological characteristics of residual oil mobilization after “microbial-nanofluid” flooding were mainly small and dispersed oil droplets in the excessive areas, and the dead-end areas were almost clean with mobilization. Furthermore, the cooperation mechanism of four kinds of “microbial-nanofluids” to enhance the residual oil recovery in low-permeability reservoirs was preliminarily clarified, namely the co-emulsification of oil, working together to unclog oil clog, microbial-nanofluid self-assembly, and structural disjoining pressure. This study demonstrated that PHDB-SiO2nanoparticle composite flooding technology provided a significant potential for the EOR from low-permeability reservoirs. Keywords:petroleum hydrocarbon-degrading bacteria;silica nanoparticles;residual oil mobilization;visual micromodels;microbial-nanofluids;enhance oil recovery

Multi-Scale Investigation of CO2-WAG Injection Mechanisms in Water-Sensitive Tight Oil Reservoirs

Xu Ruifeng,Wang Shuoshi,Guo Ping,Hukuang Haoxiang,Yuan Na

The CO 2 -WAG injection method proposed for unconventional tight oil reservoirs has been successfully applied in field. However, for water-sensitive tight oil reservoirs, there is a lack of research focusing on the displacement mechanisms and effects of WAG injection at the pore scale. And the gap between nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and computerized tomography (CT) scanning technologies is not well explored. This study integrated deuterium oxide-shielded NMR and contrast agent (n-butane iodide and lead iso-octanoate mixture) enhanced micro-CT to study the immiscible CO 2 -WAG mechanisms for water-sensitive tight oil. The aim is to investigate the microscopic distribution and displacement mechanisms of residual oil after CO 2 flooding and WAG injection in water-sensitive cores. Experimental results showed that NMR experiments and CT experiments identified the microscopic distribution of oil at different injection stages successfully. The contrast agent, despite its similar viscosity ratio, had poor representativeness in other properties, leading to significant differences in the microscopic fluid distribution results compared to NMR experiments. The primary WAG flood mechanism observed was that CO 2 dispersed oil droplets, with most being displaced out of the pores, while water played a mobility control role by blocking large pores. However, due to water sensitivity, medium and small pores also experienced blockage, making the effect of WAG injection after CO 2 flooding not significant. In the NMR experiment, the final recovery of core 6–1 after WAG injection was 64.71%. In the CT scan experiment, due to the smaller volume of the microcore, the water sensitivity effect was relatively weaker, and under the stronger influence of the capillary end effect, the final recovery reached 76.91%. In the five sets of long-core experiments, by controlling the gas–water ratio and slug size, the recovery ranged from 56.51 to 64.04%. The core flood experiments validated the representativeness of the microscopic experiments. And for water-sensitive tight oil reservoirs, controlling the volumes of water and CO 2 during the WAG injection process is crucial.

Preparation of ionic liquids microemulsion and its application for the treatment of oily sludge

Xiujie Chang,Zhaodong Wang,Xueshu Li,Shujin Ge,Aixiang Li,Yanfei Ma,Qiuhong Li

The surface-active ILs [C16mim]Cl synthesized by combining imidazole group (C4H6N2) and 1-chlorohexadecane (C16H33Cl) was used as surfactant to prepare ILs microemulsions for sludge treatment. Meanwhile, the treatment conditions were optimized and the optimal conditions were obtained. Due to the strong interaction between ILs and asphaltenes as well as the solubilization of microemulsions, the residual oil rate of oily sludge decreased to 1.33%. The characterization of oily sludge was performed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and contact angle measurement. Results showed that [C16mim]Cl ILs microemulsions treatment could effectively promoted the desorption of asphaltenes from the surface of sludge solids, which provided a clear understanding of the mechanism for ILs microemulsions-enhanced oily sludge recovery.

Anionic surfactant based on oil-solid interfacial interaction control for efficient residual oil development

Lin Li,Jia Chen,Jiawei Liu,Zhongzheng Xu,Yining Wu,Mingwei Zhao,Guang Zhao,Caili Dai

A large amount of oil film remains on the rock surface after conventional oil displacement methods. Developing novel surfactant to achieve efficient oil film peeling, and unveiling the oil-solid interaction mechanism behind is of great significance. Herein, a novel anionic surfactant 1,2-decanediol dihydroxypropyl sulfonates ( D -diHS), which was composed of one hydrophobic tail and two branched hydrophilic heads containing hydroxyl groups and sulfonate groups was synthesized via a feasible two-step reaction. The experimental results showed that D -diHS could alter the wettability of rock surface from oleophilic to strong hydrophilic, with the water contact angle reducing substantially from 100.8° to 17.8°. Compared with traditional surfactants , D -diHS exhibited superior oil film peeling performance with excellent salinity tolerance (oil film reduction rate >74.3 % at 6 wt% salinity). Based on the nano-mechanical experimental results, the reduced adhesion caused by improved hydrophilicity and the produced electrostatic repulsion between the oil film and rock surface played crucial roles in the oil film peeling. The novel anionic surfactant D -diHS proposed in this work was designed from the perspective of oil-solid interfacial interaction control, exhibiting great application potential in efficient residual oil development.
