Tebuconazole and Azoxystrobin Residue Behaviors and Distribution in Field and Cooked Peanut

Fan Hou,Peipei Teng,Fengmao Liu,Wenzhuo Wang

Residue behaviors of tebuconazole and azoxystrobin in field condition and the variation of their residue levels during the boiling process were evaluated. The terminal residues of peanut kernels were determined by using a modified QuEChERS method (quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe) by means of the optimization of the novel purification procedure with multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and Fe3O4-magnetic nanoparticle (Fe3O4-MNP) in the presence of an external magnetic field, and the terminal residues were all at trace level at harvest time. The residues in shells were detected as well to investigate the distribution in peanuts. Tebuconazole and azoxystrobin residue levels varied before/after boiling in kernels and shells to different degrees due to various factors, such as the modes of action and physicochemical properties of pesticides. The residues have been transferred from peanut into the infusion during boiling with the higher percentage of azoxystrobin as its lower logKow. The processing factors (PFs) for tebuconazole and azoxystrobin after processing were <1, indicating that home cooking in this study could reduce the residue levels in peanut. Risk assessment showed there was no health risk for consumers.

Pesticide residues in vegetables in four regions of Jilin Province

Di Hu,Mengmeng Jiang,Ting Ge,Xu Liu,Ziqi Li,Jinhong Liu,Ketong Zhu

A study of pesticide residues was investigated in vegetable samples to highlight the trend of drugs obtained from the Jilin Province, China. Total of 230 samples obtained from four regions over the period 2016–2017 were screened for 18 pesticides that were analyzed using gas chromatography with electron capture (GC-ECD). The results showed that 45 samples (19.6%) were positive including 17 samples (7.39%) exceeded the national maximum residue limit (MRL). Pesticides positive samples were detected in 32 leafy vegetables, 14 of which exceeded the MRLs (6.07%). There are 12 samples detected in celery that its detection rate was 5.22%, five of which exceeded the MRLs at the same time. In contrast, no pesticide residues were detected in beans or cauliflower. In the four types of pesticides, organophosphorus pesticides had the highest detection rate, which was 12.6% (29 samples). On the other hand, detectable residues of organochlorine pesticides were found, but it did not exceed the standard. Regional variations in pesticide occurrence were observed: fifteen, seven, and ten samples were positive from Ji’an, Siping City, and Tonghua City, respectively, six samples from the last city exceeded MRLs. There were 30 samples tested for pesticides at the farmers’ market and its detection rate was 13.04%, while only 15 samples contain pesticides that the samples (6.5%) purchased in the supermarket. The results indicated that high levels of the occurrence of pesticide residues in vegetables was an important source of exposure to pesticides. Therefore, we should pay attention to the consumers and their impact of pesticide residues on food and human health should be considered.

A modified QuEChERS-based UPLC-MS/MS method for rapid determination of multiple antibiotics and sedative residues in freshwater fish

Yan Yang,Xin Li,Jian Lin,Rong Bao

Antibiotics and sedatives are used in freshwater fish culture and transportation, and residue in freshwater fish pose potential risks to human health. Therefore, a throughput method was developed to detect antibiotic and sedative residues in fish, simultaneously quantifying 68 antibiotics and 9 sedatives in freshwater fish using a modified QuEChERS extraction method and UPLC-MS/MS. Matrix-matched calibrations demonstrated good correlation coefficients (R 2  > 0.995), with a recovery range of 66.2–118.5%. The intra-day and inter-day relative standard deviation (RSD) were below 9.7% and 12.8%, respectively. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were 0.08–1.46 μg/kg and 0.25–4.86 μg/kg, respectively. 68.8% of analytes had weak matrix effects, and 13.0% had moderate matrix effects. In addition, diazepam and many types of antibiotics were detected in30 freshwater fish. The validation parameters were in agreement with the acceptable criteria of the Codex guidelines. The method was effective in analyzing antibiotic and sedative residues in freshwater fish.

Earthworms regulate soil microbial and plant residues through decomposition

Jiahui Liao,Juanping Ni,Xiaoming Zou,Han Y.H. Chen,Manuel Delgado-Baquerizo,Yuanyuan Li,Tingting Ren,Ke Shi,Honghua Ruan

Earthworms are keystone regulators of carbon exchange between terrestrial ecosystems and the atmosphere. However, exactly how earthworms regulate the composition of microbial and plant-derived carbon in soil organic matter remains poorly understood. Here we conducted a microcosm experiment with two species of endogeic earthworms ( Drawida gisti and Metaphire guillelmi ) to investigate their effects on cellular and extracellular-microbial residues versus fast and slow-decaying plant materials. We found that both species of earthworms reduced microbial residues (amino sugars or the protein content of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS)) and facilitated the decomposition of microbial residues rather than their formation. Neither earthworm species affected slow-decaying plant residues (lignin phenols). However, their effects on the fast-decaying fraction of plant residues (particulate organic matter (POM)) depended on the earthworm species. Principal component analysis (PCA) revealed that earthworms mediated two gradients between microbial and plant residues. The first gradient was between the nitrogenous fraction of microbial residues (e.g., amino sugars and EPS-protein) versus slow-decaying plant lignin, while the second gradient was between the fast-decaying POM versus EPS-polysaccharide. Our results suggest that earthworms play vital roles in mediating plant and microbial residue fractions in soil through their multifaceted mechanisms in regulating the chemical composition of organic carbon, and in understanding biological control of the global soil carbon cycle.

Transformation of phosphorus during sub- and supercritical water gasification of dewatered cyanobacteria and one-step phosphorus recovery

Cheng Chen,Wei Zhu,Chenyu Wang,Hao Zhang,Naixi Lin

An important approach for resource utilization is to use supercritical water gasification to recover phosphorus from dewatered cyanobacteria. Most phosphorus elements are converted to solid residues after supercritical water gasification and must be transferred to liquid residues by extraction before recovery. The present study explored an environmentally efficient method to convert phosphorus directly to liquid residues via a one-step recovery process, by studying the distribution and transformation of phosphorus during supercritical water gasification of dewatered cyanobacteria. Basic additives (KOH, K 2 CO 3 , NaOH, and Na 2 CO 3 ) were used to promote the transfer of phosphorus originally concentrated in the solid form to liquid residues. A total of 74% of phosphorus was recovered as liquid residues by adding 6 wt% KOH, and total phosphorus reached 604 mg/L. Besides, pH and NH 4 + -N concentration satisfied the criteria of the struvite precipitation method. Therefore, a one-step method was established to recover nitrogen and phosphorus from liquid residues.

Eco-friendly chitosan microspheres as a novel one-step sorbent for the rapid purification and determination of pesticides and veterinary drug multi-residues in aquatic products with HPLC-MS/MS

Ruidong Zhou,Yupeng Wen,Wendi Huo,Cong Kong,Guangxin Yang,Huan Liu,Chaoying Zhang,Yingchun Mu,Dongmei Huang,Jincheng Li

A modified QuEChERS method was developed to determine multi-class pesticide and veterinary residues in aquatic products. Chitosan microspheres were conveniently synthesized and utilized as the cleanup adsorbent in the QuEChERS procedure, showcasing rapid filtration one-step pretreatment ability for the determination of drug multi-residues in aquatic products. Compared to conventional synthetic sorbents, chitosan microspheres not only have good purification performance, but also have renewable and degradable properties. This novel sorbent worked well in the simultaneous determination of 95 pesticides and veterinary drug residues in aquatic products after being combined with an improved one-step vortex oscillating cleanup method. We achieved recoveries ranging from 64.0% to 115.9% for target drugs in shrimp and fish matrix. The limits of detection and quantification were 0.5–1.0 and 1.0–2.0 μg kg −1 , respectively. Notably, hydrocortisone was detected with considerable frequency and concentration in the tested samples, underscoring the necessity for stringent monitoring of this compound in aquatic products.

A study of the pesticide residues in rapeseeds in China: Levels, distribution and health risk assessment

Qi Guo,Xiaofeng Yue,Xin Qi,Xinyao Feng,Xuefang Wang,Xiaofeng Hu,Fei Ma,Liangxiao Zhang,Peiwu Li,Li Yu

The aim of this survey was to evaluate the residue levels, distribution and exposure risk of the 38 most commonly used pesticides in rapeseed samples collected from the main production areas in China over a two-year period. The sampling area covered 12 provinces, including Guizhou, Shaanxi, Yunnan, Hunan, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Chongqing, Anhui, Henan, Hubei, Zhejiang, and Jiangsu provinces. The pesticide residues were determined using a QuEChERS (Quick Easy Cheap Effective Rugged and Safe) method coupled with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. 8.4% of the rapeseed samples contained pesticides with a residue level ranging from 0.001 to 0.634 mg/kg. The detected analytes were imidacloprid , quizalofop-P-ethyl, thiamethoxam , paclobutrazol , prochloraz, tebuconazole , difenoconazole, s-metolachlor, carbofuran , and carbendazim . The concentrations of four analytes, including thiamethoxam, difenoconazole, carbendazim and prochloraz, exceeded the maximum residue level set by the Chinese government for rapeseed, with exceedance rates of 0.1%, 0.1%, 0.1%, and 1.1%, respectively. Based on the index of quality for residues (IqR) values, 91.6% of the total rapeseed samples had an IqR category of Excellent (IqR = 0). Only 1.5% of the tested samples were of inadequate quality. Furthermore, the assessment of chronic and acute exposure, as well as health risks associated with pesticide residues in rapeseed, was conducted for different age groups within the Chinese population, including adults (6–14 years), children (15–49 years), and the elderly (50–74 years). The results of this assessment indicated that pesticide residues in rapeseed cultivated in China are not expected to be of short- or long-term risks to the Chinese customers.

Investigation of the Presence of 22 Organochlorine Pesticide Residues in Ginseng from Jilin Province, China

Xinxin Liu,Liwu Wang,Hao Li,Juxin Yin,Shaowu Lv,Ketong Zhu

ABSTRACT The purpose of this study was to investigate the status of organochlorine pesticide residues in 186 ginseng samples collected in Jilin, People's Republic of China. Based on the Chinese Pharmacopoeia 2015 method for detection of organochlorine pesticide residues in ginseng, 22 organochlorine pesticide residues were identified. Chlordane, aldrin, epichlorohydrin, and dieldrin and their isomers were not detected in ginseng from this region. Heptachlor was detected in only one ginseng sample, and the concentration did not exceed the maximum residual limit (MRL) prescribed in the Pharmacopoeia (0.05 mg/kg). Benzene hexachloride was detected in two samples, one of which was above the MRL. Hexachlorobenzene and pentachloronitrobenzene (quintozene) were found in 11.8 and 52.1% of the samples, respectively, and the residues in these samples exceeded the MRL by 4.3 and 8.6%, respectively. HIGHLIGHTS Eight organochlorine pesticides and their isomers were detected in ginseng from Jilin, China. The most common organochlorine pesticide, quintozene, was detected in 52.15% of the samples. Only 9% of ginseng samples contained organochlorine pesticides above the MRL.

Simultaneous determination of the residues of anesthetics and sedatives in fish using LC-QLIT-MS/MS combined with DSPE

Qin Huang,Hua Zhou,Xianglun Wu,Chenli Song,Jiangang Zheng,Meikang Lei,Pengqian Mu,Pinggu Wu

Liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole linear ion trap tandem mass spectrometry (LC-QLIT-MS/MS) technology operated in electrospray ionization (ESI) was developed for tracing anesthetic (AETs) and sedatives (SDTs) in fish. Sampling procedure was achieved by using acetonitrile extraction followed by dispersive solid phase extraction (DSPE) clean-up. Under the optimized laboratory conditions, reliable qualitative confirmation was obtained through the multiple reaction monitoring-information dependent acquisition-enhanced product ion (MRM-IDA- EPI ) mode. Results indicated a favorable linear in the concentration range of 1–100 μg∙kg −1 (0.1–10 μg∙kg −1 for MS-222), with regression coefficient not less than 0.9997. The detection limit ranges from 0.03 to 0.4 μg∙kg −1 (S/N = 3). The validated method was applied to determine AETs and SDTs in fish with satidfied recoveries of 86.3 %–111.7 % and the relative standard deviations (RSD) of 1.9 %–8.9 % (n = 6). Practical samples analysis indicated that the proposed method is simple, rapid, sensitive and accurate for identification of AETs and SDTs.

A survey of multiple pesticide residues on litchi: A special fruit

Siwei Wang,Xinnian Zeng,Xiaonan Wang,Hong Chang,Haibin Sun,Yanping Liu

Litchi is a kind of fruit with high nutritional value and delicious flavor. The presence of pesticides has become the main risk factors affecting the safety and quality of litchi, and their potential risk to consumers have generated much public concern. We therefore sought to investigate the multiple residues, and dietary risk assessment of pesticide in litchi. 37 pesticide residues in 268 litchi samples were monitored during May 2019 to August 2020, as well as chronic dietary exposure assessment for consumers. Of 268 samples (100%) that contained pesticide residues, up to 11 pesticides were positive simultaneously (only accounted for 0.4% of all), and at least 1 pesticide (accounted for 3.6%) in one individual litchi sample. Concerning the most frequently detected pesticide residues, pyraclostrobin was found in 76.1% of the samples analyzed. Nine fungicides were detected in 252 samples (94.0%) at levels ranging from detectable to 1412 μg/kg, and 92.9% of the samples tested contained thirteen insecticides at levels ranging from detectable to 2030 μg/kg. Residue of eight pesticides in 19.8% of the total samples exceeded their MRLs, indicating indiscriminate use of these pesiticides. One non-authorized pesticides, imidacloprid was found in 5.2% of the total samples. The dietary risk of exposure to 23 detected pesticides through litchi, based on ADI% ranged from 0% to 36.8%. The results show that despite a high occurrence of pesticide residues in litchi, it could not be considered a serious public health problem. Nevertheless, routine monitoring of pesticide residues in litchi is necessary to decrease the MRL-exceeding rate of the pesticide residues and ensure the quality and safety of litchi.

Residue extrapolation and group maximum residue level recommendation for four pesticides in the four kinds of vegetable crop groups

Yanli Bian,Gang Guo,Fengmao Liu,Xiaohan Li

The residue behaviours of difenoconazole, bifenthrin, thiamethoxam and its metabolite clothianidin on representative crops such as cucumber, bitter gourd, loofah, zucchini, tomato, cherry tomato, eggplant, cowpea, kidney bean, celery, and fennel were investigated. The effects of factors such as fruit size, property of epidermis, leaf size and others on pesticide residues were studied, and then analysed whether these crops are suitable for the same group. Results indicated residue extrapolation could be made between the different crop groups or subgroups. It could be extrapolated from high-risk residue crops to the low-risk residue crops. Cherry tomato or eggplant could be extrapolated to tomato, and bitter gourd or loofah could be extrapolated to cucumber or zucchini, and the reverse was unacceptable. For these four vegetable groups, the different edible parts led to a significant difference in pesticide residues, celery and fennel had higher residue risk because the edible parts were whole plants including the leaves. The residue difference in the same edible parts of the different crop groups was not obvious, such as the Fruiting vegetables, Cucurbits group and the Fruiting vegetables, other than Cucurbit group. The processing factor (PF) extrapolation was more reasonable because crop varieties had no significant effect on pesticide residues in processed commodities. From the perspective of pesticide residues, representative crops were proposed and the rationality of crop classification and residue extrapolation was analysed. These results could promote the process of pesticide registration and the settlement of Maximum Residue Limit (MRL) standards, and further solve the missing of MRL for minor crops.

Safety Evaluation of Chlorantraniliprole in Lychee Based on Residue and Dietary Risk Assessment

Yanping Liu,Xiaonan Wang,Siwei Wang

This report presents the development of a highly effective method employing high-performance liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) to investigate chlorantraniliprole’s dissipation, risk assessment, and residue distribution in whole lychee fruit and its pulp. Mean recoveries of the samples ranged from 80 to 105%, exhibiting a relative standard deviation (RSD) of below 8%. The limits of quantification (LOQ) for lychee and pulp were determined as 0.001 mg/kg, and half-lives (t1/2) ranged from 8.0 to 12.2 days. Terminal residue concentrations in whole litchi and pulp were determined as 0.008–0.45 mg/kg and ≤0.001 mg/kg. These residues were treated twice and thrice at two different dosage levels with pre-harvest intervals (PHIs) of 7, 14, and 21 days. The potential chronic risk posed by chlorantraniliprole to humans was non-negligible, as indicated by the risk quotient (RQ) value not exceeding 1. Therefore, this study provides significant fresh data about the safe application of chlorantraniliprole in the production of lychee, which will help China develop maximum residual limits (MRLs).Keywords:chlorantraniliprole;lychee;risk assessment;residue distribution;terminal residue;dissipation dynamic
