The presence of residues of veterinary drugs in eggs is an ongoing and significant issue of concern. Fluralaner is widely used in the prevention of ectoparasites, including the poultry red mite, but no analytical method has been reported for detection of its residues in eggs. An HPLC-MS/MS method was established for the determination of fluralaner residues in whole eggs and validated for LOD, LOQ, specificity, linearity, accuracy, precision, and matrix effects. LOD was 5 μg•kg −1 and LOQ was 65 μg•kg −1 . Recovery ranged from 97.7% to 103.7% (spiked at 65, 650, 1300, and 2600 μg•kg −1 ), while intra-assay and inter-assay coefficients of variation were consistently below 1.5%. A drug withdrawal trial was conducted with 16 laying hens administered a therapeutic dose of fluralaner in drinking water on days 0 and 7, with eggs being analyzed for 23 days. The highest concentration, 1235 μg•kg −1 , was detected on day 13. This was below the European Union maximum residue limit for fluralaner in edible chicken tissues and eggs (1300 μg•kg −1 ). Residues were detectable up to two weeks after cessation of treatment. This method is suitable for routine compliance monitoring of fluralaner residues in egg matrices and may be adapted for analysis of other edible tissues.

Excessive sodium intake induces high blood pressure related diseases. Salt taste-enhancing peptides (STEP) as a potential salt substitute have gained attention. We found that the spent hen hydrolysates obtained with flavourzyme (F-SHH) and papain (P-SHH) showed significant salt taste-enhancing activity (STEA). Identified peptides (AR, AD, DE, DEAQ, DH, DI, DR, DQ, DY, DW, ELDD, IDD, IEDM, LDD, VD, and VR) with significant STEA in hydrolysates had total concentrations of 2.02 × 10 4 and 1.40 × 10 4 μg/g for <3000 Da fractions of F-SHH and P-SHH, respectively, revealing that flavourzyme is more efficient for releasing STEP. AR exhibited the highest SETA, enhanced 21.5 % of the salt taste of 2.93 mg/mL NaCl solution. Both AR and VR dominate the STEA of hydrolysates. Primary sequence analysis suggested that Asp and Arg are crucial for peptides with high STEA. These findings could promote STEP development and application based on sustainable sources and methods in the food industry.

Previously, we found that Lactobacillus salivarius , Lactobacillus agilis , and Lactobacillus aviarius were associated with excellent egg nutrition in native chicken. Next, the optimal Lactobacillus combination is worth studying. Here, a total of 120 HyLine hens (30 hens per group contained 3 replicate cells, 10 hens/cell) in the laying peak period were randomly divided into (1) control, (2) L. salivarius + L. agilis , (3) L. salivarius + L. aviarius , and (4) L. agilis + L. aviarius groups, fed with diet only or with corresponding Lactobacilli (10 8 colony-forming units/hen/day) for 30 days. As a result, L. salivarius + L. agilis feeding could (1) improve egg-laying rate, egg weight, and albumen’s amino acid levels; (2) increase Lactobacillus abundance, decrease Escherichia coli abundance, upregulate the tryptophan metabolism pathway-related molecules, and downregulate the primary bile acid biosynthesis pathway-related molecules in intestinal contents; and (3) upregulate oxidative-phosphorylation pathway-related genes, reactive oxygen species levels, and mRNA abundance of Wnt3a , Dll1 , Lgr5 , CCDN1 , and CDK2 in the crypt. Collectively, L. salivarius + L. agilis feeding in hens could improve intestinal microflora and metabolism profile, promote crypt’s local energy metabolism and reactive oxygen species levels, and thus enhance Paneth cells and intestinal stem cells activity.
Key points
• Lactobacilli co-feeding could improve laying performance and egg nutrition. • Lactobacilli co-feeding could improve intestinal microflora and metabolism profile. • Lactobacilli co-feeding could enhance Paneth cells and intestinal stem cells activity.
