Novel nano BaTiO3-based microwave vacuum treatment for precise and controllable scales stripping of wool fibers

Liuxiang Zhan,Jiahui Pei,Jianye Yuan,Yuling Li,Feng Ji,Ni Wang

Barium titanate nanoparticles were used as a locator to help accurately break the scales on the surface of wool fibers under microwave vacuum treatment, as an anti-felting process of wool with low environmental impact. The nanoparticles loaded by ultrasound are sandwiched between the scales and fibers, which allows the microwave energy concentration to break the scales for the shrink resistance of wool and avoid damaging the main body of fibers synchronously. The friction and mechanical properties of wool under microwave treatment with different power, temperature and processing time were discussed, morphological and chemical analysis of the fibers after treatment was also carried out. The results suggested that compared with the uncoated fibers, the anti-felting performance of the coated fibers after treatment had been significantly improved, while maintaining the mechanical properties, the tip end of the scales on the wool surface were cut off and the volume of the felting ball was increased by 82.3%. The nanoparticles coating the wool were also easily cleaned without residue. This study provided a novel potential approach in the modification of wool fibers for anti-felting.

Eco-friendly Anti-felting Finishing and Low-Temperature Dyeing of Wool Through Plant Protease

Xue Yunfan,Li Xiaoyan,Fan Zhuizhui,Ji Yating,Wang Jie,Chen Qinhu,Cai Zaisheng

The presence of hydrophobic scales in wool leads to felt shrinkage, stiffness and hinders the dyeing process. This study suggests that plant protease can focus on breaking down the keratin in the scale layer on the “hydrolysis mode” to achieve a controlled peeling from the surface layer of the scale gradually to the outer layer, with little damage to the inner layer and CMC layer. The opening of the channel in the scale layer enhances the adsorption and diffusion of the dye in the fiber, thus making dyeing very easy. Wool fabrics before and after enzymatic treatment were structurally characterized using Raman spectroscopy, FT-Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The results showed that papain and bromelain tended to cleave the amide bonds and some intermolecular disulfide bonds in the molecular chains of keratin in the wool scale layer. In comparison, papain reduced the felting shrinkage of the wool fabric to 2.11%. It also increased the anti-pilling level of wool fabric by 1 level and the antistatic property by 30%. Besides, pretreatment with bromelain had a significant effect on traditional dip dyeing, increasing the dyeing rate by 48% and the K/S value by 28%. The strategy played a positive role in promoting the sustainable development policy of energy saving and emission reduction. This study provides an alternative method for environmentally friendly anti-felting finishing and low-temperature dyeing of wool fabric that can be applied commercially.

Deep eutectic solvent-mediated one-step eggshell removal and anti-felting of wool

Fenghou Yuan,Wanyue Liu,Binghui Song,Jing Wang,Fan Li,Tian Liu

The sheep lice eggshells and felting are both important problem in wool industry. Deep eutectic solvents (DES) are a class of eco-friendly and low-cost solvents that are used in various fields including the anti-felting of wool but not in the eggshell removal. In this study, the simultaneous removal of wool scales and lice eggshells using [ChCl:Urea] was achieved by optimizing the formula and condition. Satisfactory eggshell removal (80.0%) and anti-felting rates (22.7%) had little effect on the mechanical strength of the wool (12.1%). The mechanism of the beneficial effects was studied using scanning electron microscopy and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The loose structure of protein cement is conducive to the penetration of DESs to achieve complete disintegration and dissolution. In contrast, the dense wool structure prevents DESs from penetrating the interior and only removes the surface scales. In addition, dissolution of eggshells by DES also helps in its removal. To our knowledge, this is the first report of DES-mediated one-step eggshell removal and anti-felting of wool. Through economic and environmental effects analyses, DES-based technique exhibits a more promising potential for industrial applications. This work not only has significant application prospects in the wool industry, but also the application scenarios of DESs.

Enzymatic anti-felting finishing of the dyed woolen textiles through the collaborative action of mild reduction and protease treatment

Jiaqi Zhang,Kun Li,Jun Wang,Bo Xu,Ying Liu,Qiang Wang,Ping Wang

Proteases have emerged as promising agents for wool anti-felting finishing due to their eco-friendly characteristics. However, while natural proteases are used to hydrolyze the scale layer, their tendency to penetrate into the interior of the fiber often leads to undesirable consequences, including unacceptable damages, and reduced color depth of the dyed textiles. To address these limitations, a combined approach involving mild reduction treatment and controlled protease incubation was developed. This strategy specifically targets the reduction of adverse effects associated with protease treatment, particularly irreversible fiber damage and dye leaching. Specifically, a sodium bisulfite pre-reduction was employed to loosen the highly cross-linked scale layer in dyed wool, followed by protease treatment targeted to enzymatic hydrolysis of wool scales. Using a two-bath process with 5 g/L sodium bisulfite and 8 U/mL protease of Savinase Ultra 16XL, the treated wool fabric demonstrated low felting shrinkage (4.14 %), acceptable strength loss (6.58 %), and minimal alteration in color depth (color difference value <1.1). The present strategy overcomes the drawbacks of conventional protease treatments, particularly the strength loss and color alteration typically observed in dyed fabrics, providing an eco-friendly way for the commercial application of anti-felting finishing of the dyed wool textiles.

A novel “trifunctional protease” with reducibility, hydrolysis, and localization used for wool anti-felting treatment

Mei Jingxia,Zhang Nan,Yu Yuanyuan,Wang Qiang,Yuan Jiugang,Wang Ping,Cui Li,Fan Xuerong

Proteases can cause unacceptable fiber damage when they are singly applied to wool anti-felting treatment which can make wool textiles machine-washable. Even if protease is attached by synthetic polymers, the modified protease plays a limited role in the degradation of keratin with dense structure consisting of disulfide bonds in the scales. Here, to obtain “machine-washable” wool textiles, a novel “trifunctional protease” with reducibility, hydrolysis, and localization is developed by means of covalent bonding of protease molecules with poly (ethylene glycol) bis (carboxymethyl) ether (HOOC-PEG-COOH) and l -cysteine using carbodiimide/N-hydroxysuccinimide (EDC/NHS) coupling, aiming at selectively degrading the scales on the surface of wool. The formation of polymer is confirmed with size exclusion chromatography (SEC) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). Ellman’s test and fluorescence microscopy reveal that the modified protease can reduce disulfide bonds and restrict hydrolysis of peptide bonds on the wool scales. Furthermore, when applied to wool fabrics, the modified protease reach better treatment effects considering dimensional stability to felting (6.12%), strength loss (11.7%) and scale dislodgement proved by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), alkali solubility, wettability, and dyeability. This multifunctional enzyme is well-designed according to the requirement of the modification of wool surface, showing great potential for eco-friendly functionalization of keratin fibers rich in disulfide linkage.

Effective removal of scales from wool surface through the combination of thioglycolic acid compounds and proteases for anti-felting finishing

Ran Li,Qinting Zhu,Man Zhou,Bo Xu,Ping Wang,Qiang Wang,Yuanyuan Yu

The traditional Chlorination-Hercosett method for wool anti-felting processing generates environmentally harmful organic halogens. Anti-felting of wool with enzymes has attracted the attention of researchers for its environmental benefits. Savinase Ultra 16XL, a protease for shrinkage resistance, is effective at breaking down wool scales but can also degrade the CMC layer within the wool fiber, leading to a significant loss of fiber strength. In this study, inspired by the breaking of the disulfide bond in the perm process, thioglycolic acid compounds, sodium thioglycolate (STG) or glycerol monomercaptoacetate (GMT), was used in combination with proteases for the anti-felting treatment of wool for the first time. Comprehensive SEM, EDS, FT-IR, and Raman analyses of wool fibers before and after treatment with thioglycolic acid compounds and proteases. The disulfide bonds in wool scales can be broken by the reduction of STG or GMT, thus facilitating the subsequent hydrolysis of the scales by proteases. The combination use of 5 g/L thioglycolic acid compounds (STG or GMT) and 6 U/mL protease endowed the wool fabric with promising shrink-resistance properties, achieving a felting shrinkage of less than 4 %. Moreover, the anti-felting processing of dyed wool fabrics using the method outlined in this study exhibited promising results, demonstrating excellent shrink-resistance properties and minimal strength loss without changing the color of the fabrics. This work provides an eco-friendly and efficient method for anti-felting finishing of both pristine and dyed wool fabrics.

A Facile and Controllable Approach for Surface Modification of Wool by Micro-dissolution

Zhang Yiyi,Zhang Nan,Wang Qiang,Yu Yuanyuan,Wang Ping,Yuan Jiugang

Most modifications of wool focused on its surface due to the existence of the cuticle scales. For instance, chlorination, oxidation and protease treatments were used to break down or remove the scales. However, these modifications usually severely damaged the internal structure of wool. In this paper, a novel approach based on surface micro-dissolution was employed to modify the surface of wool to minimize the internal damage of wool, and improve the surface-related properties of wool. The micro-dissolution system used NaHSO 3 /urea to dissolve the scale layer of wool. After being micro-dissolved with NaHSO 3 /urea system, scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), fluorescence microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and the Allwörden reaction were utilized to characterize the treated wool. Furthermore, felting shrinkage, strength loss and wettability of the treated wool were determined. The results showed that NaHSO 3 /urea system could dissolve the scale layer from outside to inside. The fluorescence microscopic images further indicated that low concentration of NaHSO 3 /urea system can dissolve the surface of wool without the serious damage of internal structure. Moreover, the micro-dissolution system can be controlled to dissolve the scale layer on the surface of wool slightly by adjusting the reaction conditions. The presented method is simple, easy to operate, and economical, thereby can open up new directions for the surface modification of wool.
