Oxidation-enabled SnS conversion to two-dimensional porous SnO2 flakes towards NO2 gas sensing

Zhiwei Lu,Xiaoxiao Pei,Tingting Wang,Kewei Gu,Nan Yu,Mingsong Wang,Junli Wang

Tin dioxide (SnO2)-based electronic materials and gas sensors have attracted extensive attention from academia and industry. Herein we report the preparation of two-dimensional (2D) porous SnO2 flakes by thermal oxidation of 2D SnS flakes that serve as a self-sacrificial template. An oxidation-enabled, temperature-dependent matter conversion from SnS through three-phase SnS–SnS2–SnO2 (400 °C) and two-phase SnS2–SnO2 (600 °C) to pure-phase SnO2 (≥800 °C) is disclosed by means of combined XRD, TG-DSC and XPS studies. Meanwhile, the associated chemical reactions and the mass and heat changes during this solid-state conversion process are clarified. The as-prepared 2D SnO2 flakes exhibit structural porosity with tunable pore sizes and crystallite sizes/crystallinity, resulting in superior potential for NO2 sensing. At the optimized operating temperature of 200 °C, the prototype gas sensors made of porous SnO2 flakes show competitive sensing parameters in a broad NO2 concentration range of 50 ppb–10 ppm in terms of high response, faster response/recovery speeds, and good selectivity and stability. A sensing mechanism involving the adsorption and desorption of NO2/O2 molecules and the possible surface reactions is further rationalized for the SnO2 NO2 gas sensors.

MOF-decorated sea urchin-like In2O3 gas sensor with higher gas sensitivity to formaldehyde

Dongping Huang,Peng Yong,Shuifa Shen

The sea urchin-like In 2 O 3 material was successfully synthesized through a simple hydrothermal method . Furthermore, the material underwent surface decoration without adding extra indium ions , resulting in the formation of a thin MIL-68(In) layer on the surface of In 2 O 3 . The obtained In 2 O 3 @MIL-68(In) retains the sea urchin-like morphology while acquiring an additional porous structure. Compared to pure In 2 O 3 , the composite exhibits a significant increase in specific surface area, leading to enhanced gas sensitivity. Notably, it demonstrates exceptional sensitivity towards formaldehyde gas, with a response of 18 at 100 ppm at 300 °C, up to six times more than pure In 2 O 3 . Moreover, In 2 O 3 @MIL-68(In) showcases remarkable selectivity and stability. These findings suggest that surface-modified MOF can enhance gas-sensitive properties.

p–p Heterojunction Sensors of p-Cu3Mo2O9 Micro/Nanorods Vertically Grown on p-CuO Layers for Room-Temperature Ultrasensitive and Fast Recoverable Detection of NO2

Bala Ismail Adamu,Attia Falak,Yi Tian,Xinghua Tan,Xiangmin Meng,Peipei Chen,Hanfu Wang,Weiguo Chu

High sensitivity, low limit of detection (LOD), and short response and recovery times at room temperature (RT) are critical for gas sensors. For NO2, different binary metal oxide-based sensors were developed to achieve superior performance at elevated temperatures instead of RT. Herein, we report on CuO@CuO and Cu3Mo2O9@CuO sensors with CuO and Cu3Mo2O9 micro/nanorods vertically aligned on the CuO layers, which were directly fabricated using a facile, low-cost, and catalyst-free chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique. Their sensing performance tests revealed that the Cu3Mo2O9@CuO p–p heterojunction sensors exhibited a high response of 160% to 5 ppm NO2, an excellent sensitivity of 50% ppm–1, a low LOD of 2.30 ppb, a short response time of 49 s, and a rapid recovery of 241 s at RT, obviously better than those for CuO@CuO sensors. The superior performance of Cu3Mo2O9@CuO sensors could be attributed to the Schottky heterojunction formed between p-Cu3Mo2O9 micro/nanorods and p-CuO films, the catalytic effect, and the anisotropic nature of Cu3Mo2O9 micro/nanorods. This study not only provides a simple, low-cost, and batchable fabrication method of homo/heterojunction sensors with micro/nanorods vertically aligned on films but also opens an avenue for sensor design by tuning the Schottky barrier height to enhance RT performance.

Room-Temperature NO2 Detection by MoS2–Nanoflake-Decorated AuPt/SnO2 Nanotubes

Weiqi Wang,Jiamu Cao,Rongji Zhang,Huaxin Xiu,Yufeng Zhang

Although SnO2 nanomaterials have been leading components of semiconductor gas sensors, their long-standing challenges of high working temperatures limit their practical application for ultralow-power-consumption room-temperature sensing. In this study, Au and Pt bimetallic nanoparticles were used to fabricate a MoS2/AuPt/SnO2 nanocomposite device by interfacially engineering a MoS2/SnO2 nanostructure. Owing to the unique structure and electrical properties, the as-fabricated MoS2/AuPt/SnO2 device exhibits a remarkable sensing response (2.22), short response time (20 s), and excellent baseline recovery (8 s) to 10 ppm NO2 gas at 23 ± 2 °C. Meanwhile, the MoS2/AuPt/SnO2 device possesses high sensitivity, a low detection limit (20 ppb), commendable reversibility, appreciable stability, and excellent selectivity against ammonia, carbon monoxide, ethanol, isopropanol, and acetone gases. The superior sensing characteristics of the MoS2/AuPt/SnO2 nanocomposite device are attributed to the modulation effect of the Schottky junction and p–n heterojunction on the potential barrier, highly efficient interfacial electron transport, and edge-enriched structure, which provide abundant active adsorption sites. This work will advance the evolution of room-temperature gas-sensitive nanomaterials and render them promising for applications in ultralow power-integrated sensors.

Junchao Yang,Liu Yang,Ting Liang,Ling Zhang,Jianan Wei,Shuya Cao,Qibin Huang

HighlightsWhat are the main findings?A 2 mol% Sn2+-doped CuFe2O4sensor was produced for DMMP detection. The sensor demonstrated suitable sensing performance and selectivity toward DMMP.What is the implication of the main finding? The superior response–recovery characteristics and enhanced moisture resistance compared to the undoped sensor are relevant in gas-sensing applications.Sarin poses a serious threat to human health, necessitating the development of an appropriate sensing technology.Sarin is an extremely toxic and fast-acting chemical warfare nerve agent that poses a serious threat to human health, necessitating the development of appropriate sensing technologies. Dimethyl methylphosphonate (DMMP), which has a chemical structure similar to that of sarin but is non-toxic, is often used as a simulation agent in related research. Among promising gas-sensing materials, CuFe2O4exhibits suitable thermal stability. It is easily produced and has low toxicity. Its performance can be enhanced using heterogeneous ion doping to increase the number of surface defects and content of adsorbed oxygen. Therefore, a solvothermal method was adopted in this study to prepare CuFe2O4hollow microspheres that were subsequently doped with different ratios of Sn4+or Sn2+. Detailed characterizations of the obtained materials were conducted, and the corresponding CuFe2O4-based gas sensors were fabricated. Their gas-sensing performance against DMMP was studied to analyze and discuss the gas-sensing and sensitization mechanisms associated with Sn4+and Sn2+doping. The CuFe2O4-based sensor doped with 2 mol% Sn2+exhibited excellent gas-sensing performance in response to a 1 ppm concentration of DMMP, with response and recovery times of 12 and 63 s, respectively. Notably, its response to 1 ppm DMMP (16.27) was 3.3-fold higher than that to 1 ppm 2-CEES (4.98). The doped CuFe2O4sensor exhibited superior response–recovery characteristics and enhanced moisture resistance compared to the undoped sensor.

Interface Engineering p-n Heterostructured Core–Shell Mesoporous Particles for Cascade Catalysis Promoted Gas Sensing

Lingxiao Xue,Jiahao Cui,Ruiying Li,Wenhe Xie,Keyu Chen,Hongxiu Yu,Limin Wu,Tianjun Ni,Qin Yue,Yonghui Deng

Cells have greatly inspired advancements in chemical processes, including leveraging the idea of cascade catalysis to drive thermodynamically unfavorable reactions and mimicking the compartmentalized architecture to design novel nanostructures. Here, a single-particle cascade catalysis promoted gas sensing platform is inspired to be designed (denoted as CoSnO 3 @mCeO 2 ) by positionally assembling n-type mesoporous CeO 2 catalytic shell on p-type CoSnO 3 gas sensitive core. Uniform CoSn(OH) 6 @mCe(OH) x core–shell particles with tailored mesostructures, tunable large mesopores, and adjustable shell thicknesses are first constructed. After thermal treatment, CoSnO 3 @mCeO 2 particles are obtained, which serve as cascade catalysis enhanced sensitive layer for fabricating gas sensors with independent catalytic and sensing control. As a proof-of-concept, the CoSnO 3 @mCeO 2 gas sensors exhibit nearly three times higher acetone sensitivity ( R g /R a = 26.81–50 ppm) than individual CoSnO 3 sensors with an ultralow limit of detection of 5.22 ppb. The enhanced sensitivity is achieved through a tandem catalytic reforming-oxidation sensing procedure, which begins with the primary catalytic reforming of acetone to acetic acid in the mCeO 2 shell, followed by the secondary sensing reaction of acetic acid in the CoSnO 3 core. The design concept of cascade catalysis promotes gas sensor can serve as a paradigm for developing single-particle functional nanodevices for various applications.

In-situ grown CuO/TiO2 vertical bilayer nanorods array for sensitive CO detection at lower temperature

Rushun Xue,Lingmin Yu,Man Gong,Chuantao Zhang,Senlin Li,Shanglin Yang,Xuefeng Xiao,Ning Nan,Chun Li,Xinhui Fan

CuO is a typical p-type semiconductor with the advantage of narrow bandgap, making it a gas sensing material for detecting CO gas at lower operating temperatures. However, the poor response value limits its application. As a classical wide-band gap n-type gas sensing metal oxide semiconductor, TiO 2 has the advantages of high response to CO. However, high operating temperature becomes the big obstacle to overcome. Therefore, sensitive CO detection at lower temperature will be achieved by integration of CuO with TiO 2 . In this paper, in-situ two step hydrothermal method was used to prepare CuO/TiO 2 vertical bilayer nanorod arrays grown in situ. The gas sensing results show that the response value of the CuO/TiO 2 vertical bilayer nanorod arrays is 6.1 times (14.9, 300 ppm) higher than that of single CuO nanotentacle arrays (2.1, 300 ppm), and the operating temperature is reduced to 100 °C compared with pure TiO 2 nanorod arrays (360 °C). This strategy provides a new idea for the fabrication of CO gas sensors with high response and low operating temperature.

Visible Light-Induced Room-Temperature Formaldehyde Gas Sensor Based on Porous Three-Dimensional ZnO Nanorod Clusters with Rich Oxygen Vacancies

Bo Zhang,Jing Wang,Qufu Wei,Pingping Yu,Shuai Zhang,Yin Xu,Yue Dong,Yi Ni,Jinping Ao,Yi Xia

Oxygen vacancy (VO) is a kind of primary point defect that extensively exists in semiconductor metal oxides (SMOs). Owing to some of its inherent qualities, an artificial manipulation of VO content in one material has evolved into a hot research field, which is deemed to be capable of modulating band structures and surface characteristics of SMOs. Specific to the gas-sensing area, VO engineering of sensing materials has become an effective means in enhancing sensor response and inducing light-enhanced sensing. In this work, a high-efficiency microwave hydrothermal treatment was utilized to prepare a VO-rich ZnO sample without additional reagents. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy test revealed a significant increase in VO proportion, which was from 9.21% in commercial ZnO to 36.27% in synthesized VO-rich ZnO possessing three-dimensional and air-permeable microstructures. The subsequent UV–vis–NIR absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy indicated an extension absorption in the visible region and band gap reduction of VO-rich ZnO. It turned out that the VO-rich ZnO-based sensor exhibited a considerable response of 63% toward 1 ppm HCHO at room temperature (RT, 25 °C) under visible light irradiation. Particularly, the response/recovery time was only 32/20 s for 1 ppm HCHO and further shortened to 10/5 s for 10 ppm HCHO, which was an excellent performance and comparable to most sensors working at high temperatures. The results in this work strongly suggested the availability of VO engineering and also provided a meaningful candidate for researchers to develop high-performance RT sensors detecting volatile organic compounds.

UV activated formaldehyde gas sensing based on gold decorated ZnO@ In2O3 hollow nanospheres at room temperature

Lijia Zhao,Shupeng Sun,Su Zhang,Xiaogan Li

Using uniform carbon nanospheres as sacrificial templates, gold nanoparticle-modified ZnO@ In 2 O 3 hollow nanospheres with controlled dimensions and porous architectures were successfully synthesized through water bath, hydrothermal and chemical reduction methods. Gas sensing evaluation revealed that the Au-decorated ZnO@ In 2 O 3 hollow nanostructures exhibited a dramatically amplified response up to 14.8 when exposed to 10 ppm formaldehyde analyte at room temperature. Furthermore, multifaceted performance benefits of Au-decorated ZnO@ In 2 O 3 over single-phase ZnO, Au-ZnO, ZnO@ In 2 O 3 heterojunction-based composites were observed, including excellent selectivity towards formaldehyde even in complex gas mixtures; tremendous sensitivity enhancement stemming from synergies between efficient gas diffusion through hollow heterojunction nanospheres and accelerated surface reactions at catalytically-active Au sites; and rapid, fully-reversible response/recovery time of 32 s and 42 s, respectively. In-depth investigations were conducted into the fundamental sensing mechanisms enabling formaldehyde detection using AC impedance spectroscopy, in situ diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (DRIFTS), and density functional theory (DFT) computational modeling analyses.

Two-dimensional black phosphorus/tin oxide heterojunctions for high-performance chemiresistive H2S sensing

Yong Zhou,Zhihao Hu,Hongchao Zhao,Yanjie Wang,Jing Li,Cheng Zou

Hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) emission from industrial fields and bacteria decomposing of sulfur-containing organic matter poses a significant impact on human health and atmospheric environment, thus necessitating the development of a H 2 S sensor with high sensitivity and exclusive selectivity especially at a very low dose. Chemiresistive sensors based on traditional metal oxides were readily limited by the elevated operating temperature and severe cross-sensitivity. To overcome these obstacles, we prepared two dimensional (2D) tin oxide (SnO 2 ) nanosheets decorated with thin black phosphorus (BP) as the sensing layer of MEMS H 2 S sensors. Compared with pure SnO 2 counterparts, BP-SnO 2 sensors demonstrated lower optimal working temperature (130 °C vs. 160 °C), higher response (8.1 vs. 4.6) and faster response/recovery speeds (39.8 s/47.4 s vs. 79 s/140 s) toward 5 ppm H 2 S as well as larger sensitivity (1.3/ppm vs. 0.342/ppm). In addition, favorable repeatability, long-term stability, selectivity and humidity tolerance were exhibited. Thin BP not only served as an excellent conductivity platform within the composites, but enriched the adsorption sites by constructing p-n heterojunctions and introducing more oxygen vacancy , thus separately accelerating and strengthening the gas-solid interaction. This study showcased the application superiorities of BP nanosheets in the field of gas sensing, simultaneously providing a new strategy for trace H 2 S sensing via the 2D heterojunctions.

Ultra-sensitive TEA sensor based on bulk-like Zinc oxide nanostructures

Li Xue,Shi Yu,Wang Minghao,Wang Huiyu,Shao Xiang,Sun Xiaofeng

In this study, a highly sensitive bulk-like nanostructure zinc oxide (ZnO) gas sensor is prepared using a two-step hydrothermal method. The physical phase, crystallinity, morphology and compound synthesis of the gas-touchy material are portrayed and the results show that it has a bulk-like design made out of wurtzite hexagonal zinc oxide chips. Gas detection focused on the bulk ZnO revealed extraordinary sensitivity (response value of 151 for 200 ppm triethylamine at 170 °C), response/recovery time were 31/53 s and detecting as low as 0.053 ppm for triethylamine. Indeed, even at room temperature, the sensor answers with a reaction of 3.2. The gas sensing mechanism of the sensor to triethylamine is additionally discussed.

Enhanced low-temperature sensitivity of H2S gas sensing via oxygen vacancy-rich NiO-SnO2 heterojunction nanostructures

Yan Qian,Haibang Zhang,Yan Xiong,Yinzuo Wu,Ziyue Fu,Pingchun Guo,Hedong Jiang,Jiake Li,Yanxiang Wang,Shijin Yu,Hua Zhu

The detection of low concentration hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) gas is of paramount importance for environmental safety and human health, given its colorless, toxic, and flammable nature. In this study, heterostructure material composed of SnO 2 nanorods modified with NiO nanosheets were synthesized, which significantly improved the detection performance of the sensor for hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S) gas at low temperatures by combining the interaction between oxygen vacancies and built-in electric fields. The formation of heterojunctions was verified using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and the existence of oxygen vacancies was further confirmed through electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The heterojunction sensor, when modified with 3 mol% NiO, exhibited an exceptional response value of 386 towards 10 ppm H 2 S at 125 °C, with a rapid response time of 6 s, surpassing that of the pristine SnO 2 sensor. This superior performance can be attributed to the synergistic effect of oxygen vacancies between SnO 2 and NiO, along with the inherent electric field present in the heterojunction. The study showcases the remarkable selectivity and long-term stability of this sensor in detecting hydrogen sulfide gas, offering innovative insights for the advancement of low-temperature and highly sensitive H 2 S gas sensors.
