Regulation mechanism of optimal bubble diameter for ozone wastewater treatment

Xiemin Liu,Jin Jin,Yu Gao,Zheng Zhou,Feng Zhang,Jiao Geng

Efforts have been made to enhance ozone utilization efficiency and reduce energy costs in ozone-aerated wastewater treatment. Microbubbles, characterized by their large interfacial area and efficient gas-liquid mass transfer, are extensively used to boost ozone utilization. However, generating microbubbles demands significant energy, and their actual efficiency requires careful evaluation due to the absence of universal strategies for designing microbubbles with optimal performance. This study established an integrated mathematical model for ozone oxidation in wastewater treatment, based on comprehensive ozone reaction kinetics, microbubble mass transfer control theory, and mass conservation equations for gas-liquid phase components. Simulation results showed a pollutant removal rate with a prediction error of less than 20 %, confirming the model's reliability. Further analysis revealed that although the initial mass transfer rate of 0.5 mm bubbles is lower than that of 0.1 mm bubbles, the total mass transfer quantity is reduced by only 8.7 %. This suggests that an optimal bubble diameter can balance mass transfer efficiency and energy consumption. Based on this finding, we integrated ozone production and bubble generation energy consumption to develop a regulation mechanism for optimizing bubble diameter, minimizing total energy consumption while meeting target removal rates. Results indicate that the optimal bubble diameter is closely related to water depth: as depth increases, the optimal bubble diameter also increases. At a depth of 2.1 meters, the optimized bubble diameter reduces energy consumption by 33.5 % and 16.2 % compared to millimeter-sized and 100-micron bubbles, respectively. Sensitivity analysis shows that total energy consumption is more sensitive to changes in specific ozone energy consumption, while variations in bubble generation energy remain relatively stable. These results underscore the feasibility of using the proposed model to guide energy-efficient bubble size selection.

Controllable wettability on Ni foam with PDA coatings and gas–liquid mass transfer enhancement in micropacked bed reactors

Hongda Zhang,Miao Pang,Weiyao Yang,Le Sang,Zhiping Zhao

A micro-nano coating with controllable wettability is constructed on Ni foam using the dipping coating method, incorporating organic polydopamine (PDA) and 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriethoxysilane, and inorganic SiO 2 nanoparticles. PDA has the properties of controlling wettability, strong adhesion, and abundant grafting sites. The water contact angle (WCA) of modified Ni foam is controlled in the range of 0–151.5°. The stability measurement displays that modified Ni foam packings exhibit excellent acid and alkali resistance as well as mechanical stability to fluid erosion under microenvironment. Compared with non-modified (131.5°) and superhydrophilic (0°) Ni foam packings, the maximum ratios of mass transfer enhancement for the superhydrophobic (151.5°) Ni foam packing are 35.6 % and 160.2 %, respectively. Empirical correlations of the gas–liquid mass transfer coefficient and friction factor are established considering the effect of the WCA, and errors between predicted values and experimental values are within ± 15 % and ± 10 %, respectively.

Bypassing gas-liquid mass transfer resistance in a Fenton wet scrubber for boosting the removal of hydrophobic styrene: Construction of a novel gas-solid-liquid triple-phase interface

Zhiru Suo,Yuan Zhuang,Yanjun Zhao,Peng Zhou,Fushun Li,Binbin Huang,Chen Qu,Wenhui Li,Chuandong Wu,Jiemin Liu

Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs, such as Fenton) coupled with wet scrubbers are powerful and eco–friendly for VOCs treatment. However, challenges remain in the efficient removal of hydrophobic VOCs due to the extremely high gas-liquid mass transfer resistance. Herein, we constructed a “gas-solid-liquid triple-phase interface” in a Fenton wet scrubber via fabricating a new amphiphilic catalyst (PAN@Fe 3 O 4 @Nafion), which allows to capture gas bubbles and directly convey the VOCs to catalytic active center through gas transport and bypass the gas-liquid mass transfer (rate–determining) step. Compared with system with the unmodulated catalyst, the removal efficiency of hydrophobic styrene in the triple-phase interface Fenton wet scrubber was improved by 69.0%, the intermediates were dominated by small–molecule fatty acids (98.0%), and the outlet CO 2 concentration and H 2 O 2 consumption increased by 22.1% and 19.6%, respectively. Notably, mechanism analysis via confocal laser scanning microscopy and contact angle measurements revealed the arrangement of hydrophilic and hydrophobic regions on the catalyst surface. Moreover, the affinity ability of bubbles was 2.5 times greater and the mass transfer enhancement factor reached 2.2 in the triple-phase interface Fenton wet scrubber system. This study provides a new avenue for overcoming the gas-liquid mass transfer resistance of hydrophobic VOCs in AOP wet scrubbers.

Effect of ultrasonic waveforms on gas–liquid mass transfer in microreactors

Qiang Zhang,Zhengya Dong,Zhikai Liu,Guangwen Chen

This study aims to investigate the effect of ultrasonic waveforms on the gas–liquid mass transfer process. For a given load power ( P ), continuous rectangular wave yielded stronger bubble oscillation and higher mass transfer coefficient ( k L a ) than continuous triangular and sinusoidal wave. For pulsed ultrasound, the k L a decreased monotonically with decreasing duty ratio ( D ), resulting in weak enhancement at low D (≤33%). For a given average load power ( P A ), concentrating the P for a shorter period resulted in a higher k L a due to stronger cavitation behavior. For a given P A and D , decreasing the pulse period ( T ) led to an increase in k L a , which reached a constant high level when the T fell below a critical value. By optimizing the D and T , a k L a equivalent to 92% of that under continuous ultrasound was obtained under pulsed ultrasound at a D of 67%, saving 33% in power consumption.

Ultrasound-assisted gas–liquid mass transfer process in microreactors: The influence of surfactant, channel size and ultrasound frequency

Qiang Zhang,Zhengya Dong,Shuainan Zhao,Zhikai Liu,Guangwen Chen

Ultrasound effect on the hydrodynamics and mass transfer behavior of gas–liquid Taylor flow is studied in ultrasonic microreactors with different frequencies (20, 28, 40 kHz) and channel dimensions (0.5 × 0.5, 1.0 × 1.0, 1.5 × 1.5, 2.0 × 2.0 mm 2 ). Upon ultrasound irradiation, intense bubble oscillation is excited on the slug bubble, accompanied by cavitation microstreaming vortices around it. The amplitude of bubble oscillation decreases with the decrease of channel dimension as a result of the confinement effect. Channel dimension of 1.0 × 1.0 mm 2 is considered as the critical dimension above which the confinement effect would be eliminated. More intensive bubble oscillation and cavitation microstreaming are observed at lower ultrasound frequency, where more significant mass transfer enhancement is also observed. At frequency of 20 kHz, the overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient is improved by 22 times at the power density of 0.14 W/mL. Adding surfactant (SDS) in the liquid increases the amplitude of bubble oscillation due to the decrease of interfacial tension. Such an increase in the oscillation amplitude enlarges the specific surface area, leading to an increase in the overall volumetric mass transfer coefficient with the increase of surfactant concentration. The detailed effect that how gas–liquid mass transfer would be enhanced by ultrasound is quantified by a mass transfer model, which could predict both the liquid side mass transfer coefficient and the specific surface area satisfactorily.

Study on the synergistic effect of UV/Fenton oxidation and mass transfer enhancement with addition of activated carbon in the bubble column reactor

Haiying Chen,Jiemin Liu,Yipu Pei,Peng Zhao,Yan Zhang,Luchun Yan,Tongwang Zhang,Wenhui Li,Chuandong Wu,Muhammad Hussain

For the UV/Fenton treatment of waste gas, low solubility of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was a significant factor of limiting gas–liquid mass transfer and thus restricted the removal efficiency. In this study, synergistic effect of UV/Fenton oxidation and mass transfer enhancement with addition of activated carbon (AC) was observed through a drastic improvement of n-octane removal in a bubble column reactor. Firstly, the effect of AC on mass transfer was investigated. Result revealed that the addition of AC could change bubble behavior and largely enhance the mass transfer efficiency (volumetric mass transfer coefficient ( k L a ) increased from 0.0057 to 0.14 s −1 as 0–0.1% AC was added) due to the particle shuttle effect. Then AC was introduced into the UV/Fenton reaction system, and the removal efficiency of n-octane had been remarkably improved (maintained above 50% in 60 min with addition of 0.04% AC, compared with below 10% in 20 min for the UV/Fenton alone). Moreover, we comprehensively detected the concentration of residual reactants, intermediates, final products and hydroxyl radicals in the gas and liquid phase. Results indicated that addition of AC could mildly and stably generate hydroxyl radicals (10 −8  M), and the mass balance showed that the mineralization efficiency had increased from 42.4% to 57.9%. For theoretical calculations, the value of the cooperation factor raising from 0.5 to 11.7 in 40 min could offer direct evidence for confirming the synergistic effect. Finally, the reaction pathways of n-octane in UV/Fenton or AC-UV/Fenton were proposed. It can be induced that the latter ones were more likely to first break the C C bond and then oxidize into small molecules acids or CO 2 .

Pilot-scale validation and novel design of reactive distillation with HY@SiC foam catalytic packing for cyclohexyl acetate production

Zhengkun Hou,Qiuyan Ding,Xueli Geng,Hong Li,Chang Shu,Xin Gao

For reactive distillation (RD) process limited by the separation efficiency of gas–liquid mass transfer, if the physical size of the alternating operation in reaction and separation can be further reduced, it would greatly promote the efficiency of the RD process. For this purpose, a structured HY@SiC catalytic packing was developed in which the gas–liquid mass transfer separation process and the catalytic reaction occurred simultaneously on its surface. The HY@SiC catalytic packing was used in a pilot-scale column for experimental study on production of cyclohexyl acetate (CA) by RD to verify the performance of the catalytic packing for the first time. Furthermore, a RD model based on the HY@SiC catalytic packing was established based on the reaction kinetics of HY zeolite catalyst obtained in this work. Finally, a novel RD process with double recycle stream for CA production was proposed, which will be optimized design with TAC minimize as the optimization objective based on sequential iterative algorithm.

Salvinia-Inspired Architectures for Enhancing Interface Stability and Mass Transfer in Microchannels

Jinlong Xu,Yongjian Li,Haosheng Chen

Mass transfer in conventional microchannels primarily relies on wall-mediated diffusion or is compromised by dynamic instability at free interfaces, which limits interphase transport efficiency. Inspired by the hierarchical trichomes of Salvinia molesta leaves, we designed composite architectures featuring spatially selective hydrophilic modification via in situ polydopamine (PDA) grafting, which enhance mass transfer while maintaining interface stability in microchannels. High-speed imaging was used to capture the dynamic evolution of interfacial morphology, revealing failure behaviours consistent with theoretical analysis. Cyclic pressure loading experiments confirmed that the modified architecture exhibited strong interfacial pinning, increasing the stable operating pressure range by over 20% and doubling the tolerable disturbance frequency. By establishing mass transfer models, we demonstrated that this robust stability enabled efficient gas-liquid mass transfer and verified its potential for liquid-liquid extraction applications, especially under dynamic pulsatile flow conditions, where the mass transfer efficiency was improved by more than 15% compared to static conditions. This work presents an interfacial engineering strategy that combines structural design with surface wettability control, with broad potential in biological and chemical separation, gas–liquid reactions, and multiphase microfluidics.

Energy consumption analysis and parameter optimization of CO2 desorption in a structured packaged column

Kefei Li,Yue Wu,Yiming Bai,Hai Yan,Yiming Wang,Yuzhe Guan,Liang Li,Guicheng Liu

Reducing the energy consumption of CO 2 regeneration is crucial for enhancing the economic feasibility of CO 2 capture processes. While most studies have focused on developing novel absorbents, the influence of operating parameters on gas-liquid mass transfer behavior and their subsequent impact on energy consumption has received limited attention. This study experimentally investigates the regeneration heat duty (Q reg ) for CO 2 desorption from a 1-(Dimethylamino)-2-propanol (1DMA2P)/2-Methylaminoethanol (MAE) aqueous blend in a lab-scale stripper equipped with high-efficiency Sulzer DX structured packing. The effects of key operating parameters, including rich CO 2 loading, lean CO 2 loading, solution flow rate, amine concentration, and synergistic parameters (Δ α  ×  L and C  ×  L ), on Q reg were systematically analyzed. The experimental results showed that all these factors greatly influenced Q reg . For example, the Q reg decreases as the lean CO 2 loading (α lean ) , rich CO 2 loading (α rich ) , and 1DMA2P/MAE concentration (C) increase, indicating that the Q reg can be reduced by optimizing these operating parameters. Additionally, compared with MEA, 1DMA2P/MAE reduces energy consumption by 51.5 % and decreases the stripper height by 35 %. This study underscores the critical role of operating parameters in reducing CO 2 regeneration energy consumption. The findings provide valuable insights into optimizing stripper performance and demonstrate the advantages of the 1DMA2P/MAE blend as an energy-efficient alternative to MEA-based solvents in industrial CO 2 capture applications.

Enhancement of amino-functionalized carbon nanotubes on the CO2 capture in a flow-electrode capacitive deionization system by accelerating gas-liquid mass transfer and reducing charge transfer resistance

Guo Yanli,Cai Chen,Shang Zhenxin,Liu Jia,Peng Kaiming,Huang Xiangfeng

Capacitive capture is an ideal technology for CO 2 separation, offering advantages of low energy consumption and minimal reagent usage. However, its performance is often limited by slow gas-liquid mass transfer. This study innovatively utilized a flow-electrode capacitive deionization (FCDI) system for capacitive CO 2 capture and introduced amino-functionalized carbon nanotubes (ACNTs) to enhance gas-liquid mass transfer, thereby improving the capacitive CO 2 capture performance of the FCDI system. We demonstrated that the FCDI using ACNT-based nanofluids as gas absorption liquid (AC-FCDI) significantly outperformed FCDI using deionized water or pristine CNT nanofluids, achieving a 131.15 % increase in CO 2 capture rate and reducing energy consumption to as low as 3.05 kJ/mol. Systematic experiments identify the optimal ACNT mass fraction (0.02 wt%) and stirring rate (130 r/min). Material characterization, including SEM, XPS and FTIR, revealed that ACNTs could not only facilitate the CO 2 transport for efficient gas-liquid mass transfer but also provide abundant amine groups that chemically adsorb CO 2 to form reversible intermediates, thereby accelerating mass transfer. Furthermore, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and conductivity measurements confirmed that ACNTs reduced system resistance, promoting electron and ion migration. This work established a novel material-device synergy system and elucidated the enhancement mechanism of introducing ACNTs on mass transfer processes and charge migration behavior within the system, paving the way for efficient and environmentally friendly capacitive carbon capture.

Pilot-scale validation and process design of reactive distillation with HY@SiC structured catalytic packing for dimethyl maleate production

Zhengkun Hou,Qiuyan Ding,Hongbin Wang,Yilai Jiao,Peng Jin,Hong Li,Xin Gao

In reactive distillation processes constrained by the efficiency of vapor–liquid mass transfer, reducing the physical dimensions of simultaneous reaction and separation operations can significantly enhance overall process efficiency. To achieve this, HY@SiC, a structured catalytic packing was developed, allowing for concurrent catalytic reactions and vapor–liquid mass transfer on its surface. This innovative catalytic packing was employed in a pilot reactive distillation column to experimentally investigate the production of dimethyl maleate via reactive distillation, marking the first validation of its performance. Additionally, a reactive distillation model incorporating HY@SiC structured catalytic packing was established. Ultimately, a new double-column reactive distillation process for producing dimethyl maleate was proposed, with plans for optimization aimed at minimizing total annual cost, which was 4.08 × 10 5  $/y, utilizing a sequential iterative algorithm as the core focus for design improvements, while achieving DMM yield and purity levels of 99.42 % and 99.0 wt%, respectively.

Wetted-wall column study on CO2 absorption kinetics enhancement by additive of nanoparticles

Tao Wang,Wei Yu,Mengxiang Fang,Hui He,Qunyang Xiang,Qinhui Ma,Menglin Xia,Zhongyang Luo,Kefa Cen

Nanoparticles suspended in solutions are considered to have the potential to enhance gas-liquid mass transfer and have been studied for gas separation. In order to reveal the mechanisms of kinetics enhancement, the diffusion and reaction process should be carefully examined. In this paper, CO 2 absorption kinetics of amine-based solutions with additive of SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles were investigated by wetted-wall column experiments. Measurements at different conditions, including solid loading, pressure, and solvent flow rate, show a significant enhancement on CO 2 absorption kinetics. The experiment and model analysis indicate that the micro convective motion induced by particle Brownian movement plays a primary role in mass transfer enhancement. Three solutions, MEA, MDEA, and PZ which have different kinetics were selected to study the impact of nanoparticles on absorption kinetics of solutions with different reaction rate. It is interesting to find that the increased ratio of absorption kinetics by nanoparticle follows the same order with increased solvent reaction rate with CO 2 , which is PZ > MEA > MDEA. The wetted-wall kinetic model indicates that a diffusion controlled kinetics for PZ solution could result in much more significant kinetic enhancement with additives of nanoparticles. By operation conditions optimization, the liquid side mass transfer rate of MEA solution can be increased over 15%.© 2015 Society of Chemical Industry and John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
