Electrospun polyurethane microporous membranes for waterproof and breathable application: the effects of solvent properties on membrane performance

Gu Xianyuan,Li Ni,Luo Jingjing,Xia Xin,Gu Haihong,Xiong Jie

Electrospun polyurethane (PU) based nanofibrous mats were fabricated from the solutions prepared with different volume ratios of N , N -dimethylformamide (DMF), methanol (MeOH), and dichloromethane (DCM). The membrane structures such as the nanofiber diameter, the pore size distribution, and the porosity were investigated in detail. And the morphological, mechanical, waterproof, and breathable properties of the membranes were used to estimate the characteristics of the membranes. Various solutions were compared to obtain porous nanofibrous membranes without beads or curls, which revealed that morphologies of PU fibrous membranes could be finely regulated by tuning the solvent volume ratios and the solution concentrations. The results showed that the nanofibrous membranes with the DMF/DCM solvents exhibited the high fiber diameter (500–700 nm) and the wide pore size distribution (0.6–1.2 µm). Besides, the water contact angle (WCA) of the PU nanofibrous film using the 100% DMF was 133°, but it could not persist for a long time. And the resultant membranes presented high hydrostatic pressure to 2.1 kPa, modest water vapor transmission rate of 10.1 kg/m 2 /day, as well as robust mechanical properties with tensile strength of 6.6 MPa, which are desirable in many important applications including protective clothing.

Bionic lotus-leaf-structured fluorine-free polyurethane by combining electrospinning and electro-spraying for waterproof and breathable textiles

Haimin Zheng,Fang Li,Dandan Chen,Gaowei Nie,Bo Yu,Xiaoxiao Chen,Hao Guo,Zhouai Luo,Zhikang Cheng,Jianxin He

Developing environmentally friendly and high-performing viable waterproof and breathable membranes (WBMs) is critical but significantly challenging. Herein, we combine electrospinning and electro-spraying methods. First, elastic thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is used as the polymer, and poly(methylhydrosiloxane) (PMHS) with low surface energy is introduced to prepare TPU/PMHS fiber-based membranes by electrospinning. Electro-spraying is performed using a dilute solution of TPU/PMHS/SiO 2 , with fluorine-free hydrophobic SiO 2 nanoparticles introduced to facilitate the construction of a rough lotus-leaf-like surface structure, ultimately obtaining TPU/PMHS/SiO 2 WBMs with bead-on-string fiber binary structures and a strong water repellency. The results indicate that the TPU/PMHS/SiO 2 WBMs comprise a three-dimensional porous structure formed by randomly arranged fibers and a lotus biomimetic structure consisting of bead-like fibers, providing the membrane with excellent mechanical properties and waterproof breathability, including a tensile strength of 15.8 MPa, static water pressure of 33 kPa, water vapor transmission rate of 5169 g m −2 d −1 , and contact angle of 142°. Additionally, the fiber membrane exhibits an excellent strain recovery after 1000 cycles of cyclic stretching under 100% strain, verifying the excellent elastic properties of the TPU/PMHS/SiO 2 WBMs. This simple preparation process and unique composite structure can facilitate the design and preparation of environmentally friendly, waterproof, and breathable materials.

Bio-inspired superhydrophobic interface of nano-gaseous film for reducing injection pressure in oil reservoirs

Zhongzheng Xu,Mingwei Zhao,Yiming Zhang,Pan Wang,Yining Wu,Lin Li,Xin Cui,Ning Sun,Caili Dai

Superhydrophobic wettability inspired by the “lotus effect” is an intriguing property in nature, but it is rarely applied in oilfield development. Superhydrophobic nanomaterials can effectively solve the problem of “high injection pressure and insufficient water injection” in low permeability oilfields by changing the properties of the core surface, which is of great significance to the development of low permeability oilfields. Herein, we report a novel type of superhydrophobic nanoparticle (SHNP) simply modified by fluorinated long chains, and a stable nanofluid is successfully prepared by compounding surfactant. The prepared SHNP nanofluid has an excellent core drag reduction effect, and the drag reduction rate is 1.35 times that of conventional NPs under the same conditions. The SHNPs assemble on the core surface to form a large number of micro/nanorough structures, which can effectively reduce the surface roughness of the core. The PIV experimental results show that compared with the injection of pure water, the center flow velocity in the subsequent water flooding center increases by 98.27% after the injection of SHNPs nanofluid (the flow velocity decreases by 53.45% after the injection of NPs). Moreover, bubble probe AFM technology has successfully shown that bubbles can be captured through the SHNPs superhydrophobic interface to form a gaseous film. By using the barrier effect of the gaseous film, the liquid–solid interface is converted to a liquid–gas-solid interface, thereby reducing the large resistance caused by the direct contact between the liquid and solid. Such SHNPs with simple modification and low cost have broad application potential in oilfield development.

Interlaced Amphiphobic Nanofibers for Smart Waterproof and Breathable Membranes with Instant Waterproofness Monitoring Ability

Xiaowei Xing,Xiaoyu Zhang,Md Arif Saleh Tasin,Xiaoping Liang,Hua Zhou,Haitao Niu

Electrospun nanofiber-based waterproof and breathable membranes (WBMs) that can provide a high level of protection and excellent air permeability and functionality are becoming promising core materials in numerous fields. However, large challenges still remain in the facile preparation of high-performance and smart WBMs capable of forecasting the failure of waterproof protection. Herein, amphiphobic TPU/PVDF-HFP nanofiber membranes with an interlaced fibrous structure are prepared by a one-step multineedle electrospinning technology. The obtained membranes demonstrate outstanding waterproofness with a hydrostatic pressure of over 108 kPa, a high air permeability of over 10 mm s–1, and a water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of 8.40 kg m–2 d–1, as well as excellent mechanical properties with a tensile strength of 6.07 MPa and a tensile strain of 117.11%. These make them extremely suitable for WBM applications. More importantly, due to the robust interlaced fibrous structure and the piezoelectric property of PVDF-HFP, the hydrostatic pressure of the TPU/PVDF-HFP membranes can be easily monitored and predicted by measuring the voltage output, indicating excellent hydrostatic pressure monitoring capability. The addition of low-surface-energy chemical materials endows the membranes with durable amphiphobicity against various harsh conditions, which further enhances the waterproof property. Such versatile nanofiber membranes would be desirable for potential applications in protective clothing and wearable electronic products and would provide a source of inspiration for the fabrication of smart WBMs.

High-performance fluorine-free waterproof and breathable electrospun nanofibrous membranes by thermally induced coating-crosslinking

Jiwang Chen,Ni Yao,Tingliang Wang,Jiajia Wu,Mingle Ding,Xinxin Zhang,Shichao Zhang,Sam S. Yoon,Bin Ding

To meet the increasing environmental requirements, it is urgent and inevitable for high-performance waterproof and breathable membranes to be fluorine-free. However, developing these membranes faces significant challenges in achieving high water repellency while maintaining desirable water vapor permeability. Herein, we present a high-performance fluorine-free waterproof and breathable membrane using electrospinning technology and a thermally induced coating-crosslinking method. The prepared nanofibrous membrane has low surface energy and crosslinked fiber networks due to hydrophobic group grafting and heat treatment. Benefiting from its microstructure and surface properties, the fluorine-free nanofibrous membrane exhibits excellent hydrophobicity (water contact angle of >130°), desirable pore structure and mechanical strength. Furthermore, the obtained non-fluorinated membrane exhibits excellent water pressure resistance of 95.27 kPa and water vapor permeability of 7.41 kg m −2  d −1 . Meanwhile, the crosslinking agent enhances the bond between the non-fluorinated hydrophobic modifier and the substrate, increasing the stability and robustness of the membrane. This study provides guidance for designing and preparing environmentally friendly waterproof and breathable membranes, with extensive application prospects in outdoor sports, healthcare protection and building exteriors.

Super-Elastic Fluorinated Polyurethane Nanofibrous Membranes with Simultaneously Waterproof and Breathable Performance

Yang Li,Xuan Zhang,Yang Si,Jianyong Yu,Bin Ding

Super-elastic mechanical property and waterproof and breathable membranes (WBMs), which could effectively stop liquid water penetration but allow water vapor to transmit, would be highly desirable to use in an extreme situation; however, manufacturing of such materials remains a major roadblock. Herein, we present a simple but effective strategy for designing WBMs using an ultrastrong and highly stretchable polyurethane-based spinnable material via the electrospinning technique. The cooperative action of non-solvent-induced phase separation and charge dissipation optimizes the nanofiber forming process to regulate the porous structure of WBMs. The resulting WBMs present multifunctional properties with an optimum water vapor transmission rate of 6.3 kg m–2 d–1, an unexpected water resistance of 93.4 kPa, a maximum loading strength of 15.3 MPa, and a rupture elongation of 257%, as well as desirable elasticity with over 67% maximum stress residue and a high elastic recovery ratio of 85% based on 1000 cyclic stretching deformations. Moreover, the nanofibrous membranes still reserve excellent breathability and waterproofness performances even though suffering from stretching, indicating a competitive candidate for extreme situations in the protection field.

Effects of Surfactants on Microstructure and Performance of Ni Coatings via Cathodic Plasma Electrolytic Deposition

Lu Shuai,Huang Kang,Sun Xiaowei,Xue Wei,Zhang Zequn,Zhang Bowei,Wu Junsheng

The stability of the gas film in the cathode plasma electrolytic deposition (CPED) process is essential for producing high-quality coatings. In this work, cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), and nonionic polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) surfactants were added to the electrolyte to regulate the gas film. Force balance analysis of individual bubbles demonstrated that surfactants effectively reduced surface tension, resulting in thinner gas films and lower energy consumption. With 3 g/L of CTAB, SDS, and PVP, energy consumption was reduced by 67.21%, 60.97%, and 73.58%, respectively. Based on the polarity and electrostatic interactions of the surfactants, the mechanisms by which the three surfactants affect gas film uniformity and the deposition process were revealed. CTAB reduced gas film uniformity due to the attraction of opposite charges, leading to cross-sectional defects. In contrast, SDS improved gas film uniformity through the repulsion of negative charges, reducing coating roughness and increased thickness. PVP exhibited intermediate effects, producing dense coatings with slightly lower thickness. This work provides a new perspective for regulating the CPED process and lays the groundwork for exploring alternative methods to stabilize CPED operations.

Jing Zhao,Zhenhong Zhao,Aohan Hou,Qijiao Jiang,Juan Xie,Qi Feng,Zhengrong Li,Yangling Li,Gang Huang,Jianhua Yan,Xianfeng Wang

Waterproof and breathable membranes (WBMs) are essential in diverse applications, including textiles, healthcare, electronics, and construction. Traditional WBMs often rely on hazardous solvents and fluorinated compounds, posing considerable risks to human health and the environment. This study presents an eco-friendly, fluorine-free nanofibrous WBM with asymmetric wettability, fabricated using ethanol, a green solvent, and electrospray technology to coat alcohol soluble polyamide/trimethylolpropane tris (2-methyl-1-aziridine propionate) (EPA/TTMA) nanofibers with a waterborne hydrophobic polyurethane (HPU) emulsion. The resulting EPA/TTMA-HPU WBMs feature a robust three-dimensional cross-linked structure that retains its integrity even after exposure to ethanol. These nanofibrous membranes exhibit differential properties, with a waterproof performance of 103.2 kPa and a moisture permeability of 9.28 kg·m-2·d–1 on the hydrophobic side, and 96.1 kPa with 6.92 kg·m-2·d–1 on the hydrophilic side, outperforming most fluorine-free WBMs. Furthermore, the durability of the EPA/TTMA-HPU membranes is significantly enhanced by the incorporation of HPU, enabling them to withstand 40 abrasion cycles, 24 h of ultrasonic washing, and ultraviolet irradiation. This study presents a scalable, environmentally benign method for fabricating high-performance WBMs, advancing sustainable membrane technology for protective textiles and other applications.

Yang Li,Zhigao Zhu,Jianyong Yu,Bin Ding

Waterproof and breathable macroporous membranes that are both completely resistant to liquid water penetration and easily allowable to vapor transmission would have significant implication for numerous applications; however, fabrication of such materials has proven to be tremendously challenging. Herein, we reported novel electrospun composite fibrous membranes with high waterproof and breathable performance, which consisted of polyurethane (PU), terminal fluorinated polyurethane (FPU), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Benefiting from the utilization of FPU and CNTs, the fibrous membranes were endowed with superhydrophobic surface, optimized pores size and porosity, along with enhanced fibers, which resulted in excellent waterproof, breathable and mechanical properties. Significantly, the relationship among waterproofness, pore structure and surface wettability has been confirmed finely accordance with Young–Laplace equation. Ultimately, the resultant membranes presented high waterproofness with hydrostatic pressure up to 108 kPa, good breathability with water vapor transmission rate over 9.2 kg m–2 d–1, as well as robust mechanical properties with bursting strength of 47.6 kPa and tensile strength of 12.5 MPa, suggesting them as promising alternatives for a number of potential applications, such as protective clothing.

Facile fabrication of fluorine-free waterproof and breathable nanofiber membranes with UV-resistant and acid-alkali resistant performances

Yunhe Zhang,Gaihuan Ren,Gaowei Nie,Shenpeng Hu,Dongxiang Li,Wen Sun,Zhanzhao Li,Zhenhua Cui,Dongxu Lu,Xiaohan Shi,Longwei Li,Hongqin Yu,Jianxin He

Membranes with good waterproofness and breathability are desired for the preparation of outdoor sports garments. However, current waterproof and breathable membranes use environmentally hazardous fluorine-containing raw materials and suffer from many problems such as complicated preparation processes and single function. Therefore, it is a great challenge to select environmentally friendly raw materials to prepare multi-functional membranes with waterproof-breathable performance by simple preparation method. In this paper, fluorine-free poly(styrene-b-butadiene-b-styrene) (SBS), polyurethane (PU), and 2-hydroxy-4-n-octyloxy benzophenone (UV531) were selected to prepare multi-functional nanofiber membranes by convenient one-step electrospinning. The properties of the environmentally friendly multi-functional SBS/PU/UV531 nanofiber membranes were systematically optimized by adjusting the concentration of UV531 in the nanofiber membranes. The ultimately obtained multi-functional SBS/PU/UV531–2 nanofiber membrane shows excellent waterproofness (hydrostatic pressure: 58.8 kPa), high breathability (WVT rate: 5.2 kg m −2 d −1 ), good mechanical properties (breaking strength : 7.26 MPa, breaking elongation: 327.9%), excellent UV resistance (UPF: 238.23), and strong acid and alkali resistance properties. This multi-functional nanofiber membrane has broad application prospects in a variety of fields such as outdoor protective clothing, extreme environment materials, and military products.

Xuanxuan Du,Binjie Xin,Jinhao Xu,Chun Wang

The multifunctional membranes with superior waterproofness and breathability have been extensively used in high-end wearable protection, desalination , and the aerospace industry . A multi-layered, biomimetic and superhydrophobic membrane is designed via a facile two-step strategy of phase-conversion and electrospraying. The homogeneous reticular porous microstructure with a stellate spherulite surface formed by introducing sodium chloride (NaCl) during the phase-conversion process provides an effective vapor-permeable channel for the membrane. Zirconium carbide (ZrC)/silica (SiO 2 ) as two-component inorganic powders with different particle sizes can construct bio-inspired, hierarchical, and superhydrophobic layers. Simultaneously, the synergistic interactions between the components can preferably inspire the photo-to-thermal conversion properties of membranes, further accelerating the efficient transport of water vapor. The ultrathin hierarchical nanoporous composite membrane exhibits the excellent breathability of 11.9 kg m −2 d −1 and decent waterproofness of 60.71 kPa. An ultrahigh WCA of up to 167.3° gives a stabilized superhydrophobic surface to the high moisture-permeable membrane while possessed robust reusable self-cleaning and photo-to-thermal properties. Furthermore, the superior performances with the tremendous potential for application prospects in various fields.

Environmentally friendly waterproof and breathable electrospun nanofiber membranes via post-heat treatment

Gaihuan Ren,Zhanzhao Li,Lulu Tian,Dongxu Lu,Yurui Jin,Yunhe Zhang,Bo Li,Hongqin Yu,Jianxin He,Dejun Sun

Waterproof and breathable nanofiber membrane (WBM) is the core of the waterproof and breathable textile. At present, it is difficult to achieve simultaneous improvement of waterproofness, breathability and mechanical properties due to the limitation of material property and preparation technology. Herein, environmentally friendly and high-performing fluorine-free silicon-based polyurethane/polymethyl methacrylate/polyvinyl butyral (Si-PU/PMMA/PVB) WBMs were prepared via a facile electrospinning technology and post-heat treatment. By heating treatment, inter-fiber adhesion was achieved due to the melt of PVB, leading to a decrease in the maximum pore size of the fiber membrane, which enhances the waterproof ability. At the same time, the generated inter-fiber adhesion enhanced the interaction force between fibers, and thus improved the mechanical properties. The as-prepared PU/PMMA/PVB-40 WBM exhibits good water resistance with a hydrostatic pressure of 65.29 kPa, exceptional breathability with a water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of 7.0 kg m −2 d −1 , together with a high tensile strength of 11.52 MPa. The obtained Si-PU/PMMA/PVB WBMs have broad application prospects in special protective clothing and outdoor equipment.
