Modified Wood Fibers Spontaneously Harvest Electricity from Moisture

Tao Zhang,Xuewen Han,Yukang Peng,Han Yu,Junwen Pu

With the rapid development of modern society, our demand for energy is increasing. And the extensive use of fossil energy has triggered a series of problems such as an energy crisis and environmental pollution. A moisture-enabled electric generator (MEG) is a new type of energy conversion method, which can directly convert the ubiquitous moisture in the air into electrical energy equipment. It has attracted great interest for its renewable and environmentally friendly qualities. At present, most MEGs still have low power density, strong dependence on high humidity, and high cost. Herein, we report the development of a high-efficiency MEG based on a lignocellulosic fiber frame with high-power-density, all-weather, and low-cost characteristics using a simple strategy that optimizes the charge transport channel and ion concentration difference. The MEG devices we manufactured can generate the open-circuit voltage of 0.73 V and the short-circuit current of 360 μA, and the voltage can still reach 0.6 V at less than 30% humidity. It is possible to drive commercial electronic devices such as light-emitting diodes, electronic displays, and electronic calculators by simply connecting several electric generators in series. Biomass-based moisture-enabled electric generation has a low cost, is easy to integrate on a large scale, and is green and pollution-free, providing clean energy for low-humidity or high-electricity-cost areas.Keywords:moisture-enabled;electricity generator;wood modification;ambient air;ionic transport

Enhancing oil recovery of gas flooding by regulating rock surface wettability

Chengxi Deng,Min Chen,Changsong Liu,Yinfeng Xu,Yonghui Du,Hua Dong

Rock surface wettability plays a crucial role in gas flooding for oil recovery. Natural rock surfaces are usually oleophilic, resulting in high flooding resistance and low recovery in gas flooding. This study explores the regulation of the wettability of sandstone rock surfaces by modifying them with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltrimethoxysilane or its mixtures with hexyltrimethoxysilane to achieve oil contact angles ranging from 0° to 93.2°. Simulated gas flooding experiments, with N 2 as model gas, reveal that reducing the oleophilicity of rock surfaces improves gas flooding efficiency. Compared to the unmodified superoleophilic rocks, the final oil recoveries in the cores with neutral oil wettability significantly increases and the pressure differential for gas flooding significantly decreases. In cases of cores with permeability of 22 mD, 0.88 mD and 0.09 mD, the increases in oil recovery are from 28.5% to 37.5%, from 20.2 to 27.3% and from 9.1% to 15.4%, respectively; and the reductions of pressure differential for gas flooding are from 53 kPa to 41 kPa, from 323 kPa to 272 kPa, from 1054 kPa to 935 kPa, respectively. These results highlight the critical influence of wettability regulation on gas flooding efficiency, offering valuable insights for optimizing oil recovery strategies.

How moisture driven mechanochemistry stabilizes transfer film adhesion and cohesion in ultralow wear PTFE composite

Jiang Wei,Wei Sun,Kun Liu,Xiaojun Liu,Kaisen Zhang,Qing Zhang,Jiaxin Ye

Prior studies suggest mechanical interlocking, preferential adhesion of polar polymers , and PTFE tribochemistry all contribute to the wear reduction in polar polymer-filled PTFE composites; whereas their relations remain poorly understood. This study aims to decouple the relevant mechanisms by investigating wear and tribofilm environmental sensitivities of a 5 wt% polyamide-imide (PAI) filled PTFE composite. The results highlight (1) strong correlation between a carboxylate-salt-rich transfer film and ultralow wear, and (2) a tribochemical interface gradient that discourages transfer film removal. We proposed that PTFE tribochemistry induces ultralow wear by significantly increasing (1) transfer film adhesion through a virtuous cycle of tribochemical accumulation and wear reduction and (2) transfer film cohesion by promoting a surface energy interface gradient beneficial to low wear.

Autonomous, Moisture-Driven Flexible Electrogenerative Dressing for Enhanced Wound Healing

Ren Yan,Xueliang Zhang,Hai Wang,Tikang Wang,Guozhang Ren,Qizeng Sun,Fei Liang,Yangzhi Zhu,Wei Huang,Hai-Dong Yu

Electrotherapy has shown considerable potential in treating chronic wounds, but conventional approaches relying on bulky external power supplies and mechanical force are limited in their clinical utility. This study introduces an autonomous, moisture-driven flexible electrogenerative dressing (AMFED) that overcomes these limitations. The AMFED integrates a moist-electric generator (MEG), an antibacterial hydrogel dressing, and concentric molybdenum (Mo) electrodes to provide a self-sustaining electrical supply and potent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli . The MEG harnesses chemical energy from moisture to produce a stable direct current of 0.61 V without external input, delivering this therapeutic electrical stimulation to the wound site through the Mo electrodes. The AMFED facilitates macrophage polarization toward reparative M2 phenotype and regulates inflammatory cytokines. Moreover, in vivo studies suggest that the AMFED group significantly enhances chronic wound healing, with an approximate 41% acceleration compared to the control group. Using a diabetic mouse wound model, the AMFED demonstrates its effectiveness in promoting nerve regulation, epithelial migration, and vasculogenesis. These findings present a novel and efficient platform for accelerating chronic wound healing.

Sensitive humidity sensor based on moisture-driven energy generation

Ni Qingchao,Lou Qing,Shen Chenglong,Zheng Guangsong,Song Runwei,Hao Jingnan,Liu Jialu,Zhu Jinyang,Zang Jinhao,Dong Lin,Shan Chong-Xin

The emergence of novel self-powered humidity sensors has attracted considerable attention in the fields of smart electronic devices and personal healthcare. Herein, self-powered humidity sensors have been fabricated using a moisture-driven energy generation (MEG) device based on asymmetric tubular graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) films prepared on anodized aluminum (AAO) template. At a relative humidity (RH) of 96%, the MEG device can provide an open-circuit voltage of 0.47 V and a short-circuit current of 3.51 µA, with a maximum output power of 0.08 µW. With inherent self-powered ability and humidity response via current variation, an extraordinary response of 1.78 × 10 6 % (41%–96% RH) can be gained from the MEG device. The possible power generation mechanism is that g-CN/AAO heterostructure can form ion gradient and diffusion under the action of moisture to convert chemical potential into electrical potential, evoking a connaturally sensitive response to humidity. Self-powered respiration monitoring device based on the sensor is designed to monitor human movement (sitting, warming up, and running) and sleep status (normal, snoring, and apnea), maintaining excellent stability during cumulative 12-h respiration monitoring. This self-powered humidity sensing technology has promising potential for extensive integration into smart electronic and round-the-clock health monitoring devices.

Moisture-Driven Hydrogel Power Source with Asymmetric Ion Adsorption for Flexible Electronics

Zhaoyang Sun,Xian Wen,Jiseok Kim,Kaiying Zhao,Qun Zhou,Manmatha Mahato,Van Hiep Nguyen,Yang Yang,Liming Wang,Il-Kwon Oh

The hydrogel-based power source represents a compelling example of generating electricity from green energy. Recent advances have introduced various hydrogel-based electric generators that operate through external stimuli or utilize ionic interfacial regulation. However, most devices still encounter significant challenges, such as the requirement for continuous stimulation, limited output performance, complex integration processes, and poor conformability of conventional designs, hindering their practical application in wearable electronics. Here, a hydrogel-based power source is proposed that produces electricity by exploiting moisture-induced ion gradients and differential ion absorption driven by charge-asymmetric electrodes. The constructed device with flexible structure can generate a continuous voltage output of 0.45 V for 4 000 min and a current output of 12.3 µA cm −2 along with a power density up to 7.7 W m −3 for a single unit. The flexibility of the device allows it to conform to be attached to various surfaces, thus allowing the overall flexibility and folding into a small scale during the integrated process. Benefit from the miniaturized design, with a palm-sized folding integrated device containing sixteen devices that can directly power a calculator. This work provides a brand-new blueprint for a hydrogel-based energy harvester suitable for flexible electronics.

An electrocyte-inspired moisture-driven electricity generator for self-sustained water electrolysis

Quanmao Wei,Wenna Ge,Chenguang Lu,Zichao Yuan,Lei Yi,Yuhui Zhao,Shile Feng,Yu Sun,Lei Zhao,Yahua Liu

Harvesting electricity from ubiquitous moisture offers the promise of clean power for self-sustained systems. Despite extensive efforts, achieving high-power electricity generation remains challenging. Existing studies mimicking electric eels’ electrogenesis to enhance their electrical performance focused on the two-membrane structure that linearly adds up the voltage, but their current output was either transient or limited to microamperes, because of the large resistance for ion diffusing across material interfaces. Here, we report an electrocyte-inspired moisture-driven electricity generator (EMEG) made from an interphase-mediated Janus film. The continuous interphase significantly alleviates the ion migration resistance, boosting the current output to 150 µA and sustaining the voltage of 0.8 V continuously for more than 1000 h. We also show that integrated EMEGs were easily assembled to self-powered smart watch for emergency rescue. Furthermore, the integrated EMEGs achieved self-sustained and moisture-powered water splitting with a steady hydrogen production. Our results provide a rational for bio-inspired designs toward green and sustained power generation.

MXene-enhanced paper/hydrogel bilayer moisture-driven generator for long-term energy output

Zhaoqing Lu,Nana Wang,Li Hua,Bin Wang,Shanshan Chen,Rui Cheng

Moisture-driven energy generators (MEGs) represent a renewable energy technology, yet challenges such as environmental humidity dependence and transient power generation behavior hinder their practical applications. Herein, a high-performance bilayer MEG is developed by integrating MXene-impregnated paper with a polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel to realize environmental tolerance and sustained power generation. Electronegative MXene and paper with 3D porous structure synergistically facilitate selective transport of positive charge, while the hydrogel serves as a water reservoir to provide a moist environment and migratory ions. The MXene-impregnated paper-hydrogel MEG (MPH-MEG) delivers a maximum open-circuit voltage (V oc ) of 0.537 V and power density of 4.8 μW cm −2 at 40 % relative humidity (RH). Moreover, by replacing water in the hydrogel with sodium lactate, the MXene-impregnated paper-organic hydrogel MEG (MPO-MEG) exhibits enhanced water retention, showing a stable V oc of ∼350 mV for over 7 days, even at 40 % relative humidity (RH). Furthermore, the scalable integration of MPO-MEG units demonstrates practical application for powering commercial timers and LEDs. This work presents a novel and facile strategy for preparing high-performance and environmentally stable MEGs for sustained power generation without the need for an additional humid environment.

Atmospheric-moisture-driven evaporative cooling and concurrent hydrovoltaic energy harvesting in photovoltaic panels

Sunmiao Fang,Yuxuan Huang,Saichao Dang,Khalid Hazazi,Yue Cao,Jiachen Wang,Pingfan Wu,Stefaan De Wolf,Hussam Qasem,Qiaoqiang Gan

Moisture-driven hydrovoltaic devices (MHDs) are an emerging class of energy harvesters that convert ambient moisture gradients into electricity, offering notable potential for decentralized power supply in off-grid regions. However, their output performance is often limited by sluggish moisture sorption and evaporation kinetics. Herein, we developed a high-performance cellulose-based MHD that is capable of delivering a stable voltage of ~0.7 V and a power density of 20 mW m -2 for over 30 days under ambient conditions (40%-70% RH, ~20 ℃). To overcome the intrinsic power limitations, we constructed a hybrid energy harvesting system by coupling the MHD with a photovoltaic (PV) panel using an interfacial hydrogel cooling layer. This synergistic design enables the MHD to harness waste heat generated by the PV panel, boosting its power output by ~150%. At the same time, evaporative cooling lowers the PV panel temperature by up to 13.5 °C, increasing its power output by ~15%. The integrated system can directly power various electronic devices and support energy storage, paving the way for sustainable, self-powered Internet of Things networks and net-zero energy buildings through efficient utilization of ambient moisture and solar-induced thermal waste.

Moisture-Driven Power Generation for Multifunctional Flexible Sensing Systems

Lianhui Li,Zhigang Chen,Mingming Hao,Shuqi Wang,Fuqin Sun,Zhigang Zhao,Ting Zhang

Flexible self-powered multifunctional sensing systems provide a promising direction for the development of wearable electronics. Although increased efforts have been devoted to developing self-powered integrated devices, the development of flexible and adaptable sensing systems with miniaturized stable power supplies is highly desirable yet greatly challenging. Herein, an ambient moisture-induced self-powered wearable sensing system was fabricated by integrating a porous polydopamine layer with a hydroxy group gradient (called g-PDA) based moisture-enabled power generator and a flexible pressure sensor. Due to the large amount of gradient-distributed free cations (H+) and locally confined anions produced in wide electrode spaces during hydration of the thin porous g-PDA film, the moisture-induced potential and effective output power density of the g-PDA-based power generator rapidly reaches up to 0.52 V and 0.246 mW cm–2, respectively. Importantly, the voltage output within 120 s only has 6% change, and a continuously open-circuit voltage can be maintained after 1900 s of attenuation, which is a breakthrough for the duration of humidity generation. Finally, a self-powered wearable multifunctional sensing system has been demonstrated to be able to provide real-time monitoring of human physiological signals, without an external power supply, which opens new opportunities for future self-powered multifunctional sensing systems.

Highly Efficient and Stable All-Weather Moisture Power Generation via Asymmetric Structured Color Photothermal Evaporation-Induced Cotton Fabrics

Huiyu Yang,Xiaohua Cheng,Liangang Zhao,Xiangyi Zhang,Bin Lu,Zhengfei Tan,Hai Liu,Liangjun Xia,Weilin Xu

Harvesting electrical energy from the ubiquitous water cycle to power flexible electronic devices is receiving increasing attention. However, the development of moisture-driven generators with high and stable power output remains a significant challenge. Here, we design a photothermal evaporation-driven moisture generator (PEMG) that modifies a cotton fabric with in situ polymerized pyrrole by a polydopamine (PDA)-structured color film to form an asymmetric photothermal temperature gradient. The PDA asymmetric photothermal layer not only effectively addresses the issue of insufficient sustained power generation caused by water adsorption saturation but also mitigates the unstable moisture gradient resulting from excessive water evaporation. CF@PPy@PDA (purple) achieved an open-circuit voltage ( V oc ) of 0.74 V and a short-circuit current ( I sc ) of 0.72 mA under 60% relative humidity (RH) and 1-sun illumination, respectively. White LED bulbs emit a steady stream of light for more than 24 h. Moreover, the V oc of the PEMG (six units in series) reaches 1.18 V at an average solar intensity of 1000 W m −2 and 43% RH, while the V oc is 0.72 V at night (52% RH). Meanwhile, wearable systems designed with integrated PEMG units provide sufficient power supply for electronic devices under natural conditions.

Dual-interfacial gating unlocks bidirectional ionic flux for high-efficiency hydrovoltaic energy harvesting

Lin Li,Yongfang Yang,Nan He,Xinyi Xu,Bingsen Wang,Jie Miao,Shengli Xu,Haonan Wang,Dawei Tang

Hydrovoltaic devices, capable of harvesting energy from water of moisture, hold great potential for decentralized and sustainable electricity generation. However, their current density remains limited by unidirectional, single-ion transport, leaving nearly half of available charge carriers unused. Here, we propose a dual-interfacial gating (DIG) strategy that spatially separates cation and anion pathways, enabling simultaneous and bidirectional ion migration to fully exploit the ionic flux. This configuration significantly enhances current density, achieving a record value of 1.48 mA cm−3—one order of magnitude higher than those of typical hydrovoltaic systems (0.01–0.1 mA cm−3) and surpassing previously reported state-of-the-art results. Mechanistic insights from finite-element analysis and charge-injection experiments reveal that spatially segregated ion pathways effectively enhance ionic transport through simultaneous counter-directional ion migration. The scalable DIG architecture allows practical large-area integration; a 468 cm2 module generates 353 mA of short-circuit current, powering miniature fans continuously for over 3 hours and driving wearable sweat-based biosensors. These advances address the long-standing bottleneck of single-ion transport and establish a practical pathway toward high-performance, scalable moisture-driven power sources for sustainable energy, IoT and healthcare applications.
