A novel fluorinated diamine as an extender for polyurethanes

Shi Xiang,Shi Hong-Xin,Wu Hong-Ke,Shen Hai-Min,Cao Peng

A novel environmentally friendly fluorinated diamine N-[2-[(2-aminoethyl) amino]ethyl]-perfluoro-2,5-dimethyl-3,6-dioxa-nonanamide(FDETA) was synthesized for the first time based on diethylenetriamine and ethyl perfluoro-2,5-dimethyl-3,6-dioxa-nonanoate (FEt). It was characterized by means of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mass spectroscopy (MS). Subsequently, fluorinated polyurethanes (FPUs) containing various amounts of FDETA were then synthesized using hexamethylene diisocyanate (HDI), poly(tetramethylene oxide glycol) (PTMG), FDETA and 1,4-butanediol (BDO) as the main starting materials. Results of proton 1 H NMR and FTIR had verified successful incorporation of the FDETA chain extenders into FPU backbones. The surface properties of FPUs were detected by contact angle measurement, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). The thermal property of FPUs was also investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Results from EDX, SEM and contact angle studies indicated that fluorinated side chains in the hard segments had indeed migrated onto the surface. Results from DSC and TGA studies indicated that the thermal stability and the degree of phase separation were also improved.

Synthesis and Characterization of Co-Modified Polyurethane Nanocomposite Latexes by Terminal and Pendant Fluoroalkyl Segments

Hua Jin,Fuquan Deng,Wei Xu

To further improve the hydrophobic and thermal properties of fluorinated polyurethane (FPU), we initially prepared the fluorine- and silicon-containing pendant groups’ diols (DEFA and DESiA) by Michael addition reaction. Next, we synthesized a series of co-modified polyurethane nanocomposite (TPFPU-SiO2) latexes by terminal and pendant fluoroalkyl segments via varying the additive amount of silica sols. Structure and performance properties of the target materials were characterized by IR, TEM, TGA, DSC, XRD, XPS, SEM, AFM, and contact angle measurements. Results showed that with the increase in silica sols dosage, the mean particle size of the TPFPU-SiO2latexes was increased and their emulsion stability gradually decreased. The thermal stability of the TPFPU-SiO2films were gradually increased and hydrophobicity of the TPFPU-SiO2films increased first and then slightly decreased. The maximum water contact angle on the TPFPU-SiO2films was 119.8° and the lowest water absorptivity was 2.49%. Thus, these novel fluorinated polyurethane nanocomposite latexes can find valuable applications in heat-resistant and anti-fouling coatings. Keywords:fluorinated polyurethane;nanocomposite;hydrophobicity;thermal behaviors

Influence of Fluorinated Polyurethane Binder on the Agglomeration Behaviors of Aluminized Propellants

Chen Shen,Shi Yan,Yapeng Ou,Qingjie Jiao

In this study, fluorinated polyurethane (FPU) was prepared from dialcohol-terminated perfluoropolyether as a soft segment; isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) as a curing agent; 1,2,4-butanetriol (BT) as a crosslinker; and 1,4-butanediol (BDO) as a chain extender. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and1H NMR were used to characterize the structure of the FPU. The mechanical properties of the FPUs with different BDO and BT contents were also measured. The tensile strength and breaking elongation of the optimized FPU formula were 3.7 MPa and 412%, respectively. To find out the action mechanism of FPU on Al, FPU/Al was prepared by adding Al directly to FPU. The thermal decomposition of the FPU and FPU/Al was studied and compared by simultaneous differential scanning calorimetry-thermogravimetry-mass spectrometry (DSC-TG-MS). It was found that FPU can enhance the oxidation of Al by altering the oxide-shell properties. The combustion performance of the FPU propellant, compared with the corresponding hydroxyl-terminated polyether (HTPE)-based polyurethane (HPU) propellant, was recorded by a high-speed video camera. The FPU propellants were found to produce smaller agglomerates due to the generation of AlF3in the combustion process. These findings show that FPU may be a useful binder for tuning the agglomeration and reducing two-phase flow losses of aluminized propellants.

Synthesis and properties of novel fluorinated polyurethane based on fluorinated gemini diol

Xiang Shi,HongXin Shi,HongKe Wu,HaiMin Shen,Peng Cao

In the current study, the novel fluorinated polyurethanes (FPUs) that contained the gemini branched fluoroether side groups on the hard segments were developed. In brief, to obtain these FPUs, a new class of fluorinated gemini diol with double-branched fluoroether side groups was first synthesized and characterized by using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance, and mass spectrometry. Subsequently, a series of FPUs were designed and prepared by using hexamethylene diisocyanate, poly (tetramethylene oxide glycol), 1,4-butanediol, and fluorinated gemini diol. Analysis of the FPUs' surface properties from contact angle analysis indicated that the water contact angle increased from 81° to more than 120° when the content of fluorinated gemini diol was increased. Differential scanning calorimetry results revealed that introduction of fluorinated gemini dio decreased the T g of FPUs, causing a better phase separation. Results from thermogravimetric analysis studies indicated the thermal stability of FPUs was improved. Scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed that fluoroether groups migrate to and enrich on the outmost surface of FPUs.

Hydrophobic Fluorinated Polyurethane Encapsulants for Hydroacoustic Applications

Zhihua Li,Ziyi Wang,Yidan Zhang,Ziteng Guo,Bo Zhao,Sainan Liu

Polyurethane elastomers are widely employed as underwater transducer encapsulants, owing to their distinctive mechanical and acoustic properties. However, the lack of hydrophobicity of polyurethanes remains a problem to be resolved. A series of hydrophobic fluorine-modified polyurethanes (FPUs) were synthesized by incorporating 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecyltriMethoxysilane (FAS-17) into polybutadiene-based polyurethane. These fluorinated chain extenders enhance the hydrophobicity by reducing surface energy and increase physical cross-linking points, thereby improving the material's overall performance. Remarkably, at a FAS-17 content of 4 wt%, the water contact angle of FPU-2 rises to 106.0°, with a water absorption rate of only 0.189%. This corresponds to a substantial 58.6% reduction in water absorption compared to unmodified polyurethane (PU), demonstrating its exceptional hydrophobicity. Additionally, the introduction of fluorine-containing chains enhances mechanical properties, with FPU-2 having an elongation at break (452%) and tensile strength (10.93 MPa). These results demonstrate that fluorinated polyurethane not only retains the essential properties for underwater sound transmission but also significantly improves hydrophobicity.

Superamphiphobic nanofibrous membranes for effective filtration of fine particles

Na Wang,Zhigao Zhu,Junlu Sheng,Salem S. Al-Deyab,Jianyong Yu,Bin Ding

The worldwide demands are rising for an energy-efficient and cost-effective approach that can provide advanced nanofibrous membranes with high filtration performance and superior antifouling properties. Here we report a novel synthesized fluorinated polyurethane (FPU) modified nanofibrous membrane optimized to achieve oil and non-oil aerosol particle filtration. By employing the FPU incorporation, the polyacrylonitrile/polyurethane (PAN/PU) composite membranes were endowed with superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 154° and superoleophobicity with an oil contact angle of 151°. Morphology, surface wettability, porous structure, and filtration performance could be manipulated by tuning the solution composition as well as the hierarchical structure. Furthermore, the as-prepared membranes can capture, for the first time, a range of different oil aerosol particles in a single-unit operation, with >99.9% filtration efficiency, by using the combined contribution of fiber diameter and surface roughness acting on the objective particles. Exemplified here by the construction of superamphiphobic nanofibrous membrane, numerous applications of this medium includes high efficiency particulate air filters, ultra-low penetration air filters, and respiratory protection equipment.

Synthesis and characterization of fluorinated polyurethane containing carborane in the main chain: Thermal, mechanical and chemical resistance properties

Li Ning,Zeng Fang-Lei,Wang Yu,Qu De-Zhi,Zhang Chun,Li Juan,Huo Jin-Zhao,Bai Yong-Ping

In this study, two fluorinated polyurethanes (FPU) containing carborane groups in the main chains were firstly designed and synthesized via the reaction of hexamethylene diisocyanate trimer (HDI trimer) with fluorinated polyesters (CFPETs) having hydroxyl-terminated carborane groups at room temperature. The structures of carborane fluorinated polyesters (CFPETs) and polyurethanes (CFPUs) were characterized by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements. The thermal stability, mechanical properties, Shore A hardness, solvent resistance and acid-alkali resistance of the carborane fluorinated polyurethane films were also studied. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) tests manifested that the introduction of carborane groups into the main chain of fluorinated polyurethane endowed the obtained fluorinated polyurethane with excellent thermal stability. The thermal decomposition temperature of carborane fluorinated polyurethane (CFPU) increased by 190 °C compared with that of the carborane-free fluorinated polyurethane (FPU). Even at 800 °C, CFPU showed the char yield of 66.5%, which was higher than that of FPU (34.3%). The carborane-containing fluorinated polyurethanes also showed excellent chemical resistance and prominent mechanical property even after the cured films being immersed into Jet aircraft oil or 37% HCl for 168 h or at high temperature (700 °C). It is found that the structural characteristics of carborane group and the compacted structure of CFPU effectively improve the thermal stability, mechanical property, solvent resistance and acid-alkali resistance of the carborane-free fluorinated polyurethane. These excellent properties make CFPU as the useful raw materials to prepare the high temperature resistant coatings or adhesives for automotive engines, engine or fuel tank of aircraft and other equipment working in high-temperature or high concentrations of acid-alkali environments.

Waterproof and breathable membranes of waterborne fluorinated polyurethane modified electrospun polyacrylonitrile fibers

Jiaqi Wang,Yang Li,Haiyang Tian,Junlu Sheng,Jianyong Yu,Bin Ding

Creating an efficient and cost-effective approach that can provide advanced microporous membranes with high waterproofness and good breathability has proved to be tremendously challenging. This work responds to these challenges by designing, fabricating and evaluating an electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibrous membrane which was modified with waterborne fluorinated polyurethane (WFPU) to achieve high waterproof and breathable performances. By employing the WFPU modification, the pristine PAN fibrous membranes possessed remarkable superhydrophobicity with an advancing water contact angle of 159° as well as adjustable pore structure. Significantly, the waterproofness was confirmed to depend on the maximum pore size and surface wettability, in good agreement with the Young–Laplace equation, and a geometric coefficient A was introduced as a geometric factor to evaluate the torturous pore structure in electrospun fibrous membranes. Furthermore, the resultant membranes could present a high waterproofness up to 83.4 kPa, large water vapor transmission rate over 9.2 kg per m2 per day, good air permeability over 5.9 L m−2 s−1, suggesting them as promising candidates for a variety of potential applications such as protective clothing.

Synthesis of durable hydrophobic fluorinated polyurethanes with exceptional cavitation erosion resistance

Ning Li,Rui Yang,Ye Tian,Pengfei Lu,Nengliang Huang,Hua Li,Xiuyong Chen

This study prepared a series of fluorinated polyurethane (FPU) with different fluorine content via changing the content of hydroxy-terminated liquid fluorine elastomer (LFH) for achieving good cavitation erosion resistance. The results showed that the FPU samples had much superior hydrophobicity , thermal stability, mechanical properties , and cavitation erosion resistance compared to the polyurethane (PU). The FPU synthesised from 20 % LFH exhibited the best properties, and its erosion rate during cavitation erosion was only 26.3 % of the PU. In addition, the simulation results suggest that the fluorine-containing soft segments in FPU were responsible for the improved properties because these soft segments would not be subjected to hydrolysis and exhibited good stability at a high temperature.

Synthesis and antifouling activities of fluorinated polyurethanes

Zhuangzhuang Qiao,Deqiu Xu,Yan Yao,Shaomin Song,Meihui Yin,Jianbin Luo

A series of fluorinated polyurethanes (FPUs) with various contents of fluorinated chain extender (EF) and the same amount of poly(oxytetramethylene glycol) and diphenylmethanediisocyanate were synthesized to explore the relationship between the surface physicochemical properties and bulk microphase separation structures of these FPUs and their antifouling activities against model bacteria and platelets. The bulk microphase separation of FPUs increased with the amount of incorporated EF. It was found that the surfaces of all FPUs were saturated by a layer of fluorocarbon chains which resulted in similar chemical composition and wetting activities for the three kinds of FPUs. The FPUs with lower or similar microphase separation compared with non-fluorinated polyurethane chain-extended with 1,4-butanediol showed similar or even increased adhesion of bacteria and platelets. Notably, FPU with a higher degree of microphase separation than non-fluorinated polyurethane displayed excellent antifouling activities against both model bacteria and blood platelets. It is therefore concluded that the increased microphase separation of the FPUs results in enhanced antifouling properties. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry

Developing an acidproof breathable composite fabric based on fluorinated polyurethane/isotropic pitch electrospun nanofibers

Yiqing Shao,Qingle Zhang,Jianjian Gong,Xin Xia

To develop a series of novel acidproof and breathable fabric, electrospun fluorinated polyurethane/polyurethane and pitch nanofibers were directly deposited on polyester/cotton blended fabric. The layered and interpenetrated structured membranes were built to study the effects of different structures on the acidproof and breathable performances. The acidproof and breathable mechanism of different structured composite fabrics had been evaluated via emission scanning electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, contact angle, porosity, pore size, comfort and mechanical test, respectively. The results showed that the layered structured composite fabric had advantages in acidproof property, i.e. the acid (H2SO4, 80%) contact angle was 130° due to the low surface energy caused by the high fluorine content (36.96%). Meanwhile, such structured composite fabric provided double protection, which made the acid-resistance pressure to reach a high value of 1050 Pa, while the interpenetrated structured composite fabric showed superior comfort and mechanical properties. Due to the high porosity (88.01%), the water vapor transport rate and air permeability were 7554.14 g/m2·24h and 46.33 mm/s, respectively. Due to the relative slip of fluorinated polyurethane/polyurethane fibers was restricted, the tensile strength and bursting strength of interpenetrated one was 1315 N and 795 N, which were higher than layered one.

Yang Li,Zhigao Zhu,Jianyong Yu,Bin Ding

Waterproof and breathable macroporous membranes that are both completely resistant to liquid water penetration and easily allowable to vapor transmission would have significant implication for numerous applications; however, fabrication of such materials has proven to be tremendously challenging. Herein, we reported novel electrospun composite fibrous membranes with high waterproof and breathable performance, which consisted of polyurethane (PU), terminal fluorinated polyurethane (FPU), and carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Benefiting from the utilization of FPU and CNTs, the fibrous membranes were endowed with superhydrophobic surface, optimized pores size and porosity, along with enhanced fibers, which resulted in excellent waterproof, breathable and mechanical properties. Significantly, the relationship among waterproofness, pore structure and surface wettability has been confirmed finely accordance with Young–Laplace equation. Ultimately, the resultant membranes presented high waterproofness with hydrostatic pressure up to 108 kPa, good breathability with water vapor transmission rate over 9.2 kg m–2 d–1, as well as robust mechanical properties with bursting strength of 47.6 kPa and tensile strength of 12.5 MPa, suggesting them as promising alternatives for a number of potential applications, such as protective clothing.
