Electrochemical formation of Pr aided by additive (KF) in LiCl–KCl molten salt

Li Mei,Du Rui,Wei Hedi,Chen Jiayi,Liu Rugeng,Zhang Meng,Han Wei

In order to investigate the influences of the additive (KF) on electrochemistry and deposit morphology of Pr, various electrochemical techniques were used to comparative investigate the electroreduction potential and diffusion coefficient of Pr 3+ and kinetic properties of Pr 3+ /Pr in LiCl–KCl-PrCl 3 before and after the addition of KF at different molar concentration ratios of F − to Pr 3+ ( k ). Cyclic voltammetry, square wave voltammetry, and reverse chronopotentiometry results showed that the value of k ( k  = 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4) had no effect on reduction mechanism of Pr 3+ . With the increase of k , the reduction peak potential moved in the negative direction, the diffusion coefficient decreased, and diffusion activate energy increased. Meanwhile, the exchanged current densities ( j 0 ), charge transfer resistances ( R ct ), and activate energies ( E a ) were measured at different k by linear polarization technique, which illustrated that with the increase of k , j 0 gradually decreased, and E a and R ct increased. Furthermore, the electrochemical preparation of Pr aided by KF was explored by potentiostatic electrolysis at different k , and the products were characterized by XRD, SEM, and EDS, which indicated that with the increase of k , the morphology of metallic Pr changed from slender needles to granular. A 2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)phenol based on conjugated polymer: Highly selective colorimetric fluorescent chemosensor for F-depending on Si–O bond cleavage reaction

Yinhong Liu,Yuhan Wei,Yongshuang Bian,Shengjiao He,Xin Wang,Xin Liu,Chenglei Li,Qi Wu,Xianyin Zeng,Hanguang Wang,Kuan Liu

Design and synthesis of highly selective fluorine ion probes become particularly important owing to the specific role of fluorine ion in chemical and biomedical progresses. As a new-type of fluorescent material, conjugated polymers with unique photometric properties have been widely researched by scientists in the field of the fluorescence sensors. In this study, the polymer PBTPV-OSi containing benzothiazole moiety is synthesized via palladium-catalyzed Heck coupling reaction. This polymer not only exhibits good solubility in organic solvents but also shows high selectivity for fluorine ion detection in comparison to other anions. Upon addition of F− to PBTPV-OSi solution, Si–O cleavage of PBTPV-OSi leads to the fluorescence quenching of the polymer in tetrahydrofuran dramatically, and the detection limit is 8 × 10−6 mol/L. Moreover, besides detecting fluorine ion from organic phase, the probe can also effectively detect potassium fluoride from inorganic phase. More importantly, a naked-eye detectable chromogenic and fluorogenic dual response to fluorine ion (F−) can be visibly noted and the detection process of fluorine ion is relatively fast.

A synergistic ligand complexation-electrocatalysis strategy for efficient uranyl extraction from nuclear wastewater

Juanlong Li,Hong Li,Yanxiang Kong,Sergey V. Churakov,Hangxi Liu,Yuxuan Li,Jiayi Zhang,Zedong Zhou,Ming Fang,Xiaoli Tan,Guixia Zhao,Laurent Charlet,Bin Ma,Xiangke Wang

The safe and energy-efficient treatment of uranium-containing nuclear wastewater, particularly under harsh acidic and fluoride-rich conditions, remains a major challenge for nuclear waste management. Conventional extraction methods suffer from significant energy barriers, as they require the destabilization of stable [UO 2 F n ] 2-n (n = 0, 1, 2, 3, 4) complexes prior to uranyl binding, resulting in poor extraction efficiency. Herein, we apply a synergistic ligand complexation and electrocatalytic reduction strategy using Ti-doped polyoxometalate-functionalized UiO-66-NH 2 (Ti-PMA/UiO66-NH 2 ) for the electrochemical extraction of uranyl from even acidic fluoride-rich wastewater. The incorporation of Ti 4+ into the UiO-66-NH 2 framework creates structural defects that enhance charge separation and promote electron transport, leading to improved catalytic activity. Mechanistic studies revealed that surface oxo groups act as key active sites for uranyl capture via ligand complexation, while the Mo(V)/Mo(VI) redox couple facilitates efficient electrocatalytic reduction of uranyl to insoluble UO 2 under N 2 atmosphere or to U 3 O 8 in atmospheric conditions, directly enabling uranium recovery. The resulting electrocatalysts exhibited exceptional performance, achieving 96.92% uranyl removal from real nuclear wastewater with a high extraction capacity of 6610 mg g −1 at an applied potential of -0.8 V, even at F − concentrations up to 5 g L −1 . The direct uranium recovery enabled by this process offers a robust and energy-efficient pathway for uranyl removal and resource recovery from chemically aggressive nuclear effluents, contributing to safer and more sustainable nuclear wastewater treatment and closing the nuclear fuel cycle.

A HF-Free Synthesis Method for High-Luminescent Efficiency Narrow-Bandgap Red Phosphor K3AlF6: Mn4+ with NH4HF2 as the Molten Salt

Chenxing Liao,Feng Zhou,Wei Xie,Liaolin Zhang

Mn4+-doped fluoride red phosphors are widely used in white LED lighting and display applications due to their excellent luminescent properties. However, their synthesis relies heavily on highly toxic aqueous hydrofluoric acid, which not only causes severe environmental and soil/water pollution but also makes it difficult to control the microstructure of the products due to the rapid reaction rate. In this study, low-melting-point NH4HF2was used as the molten salt, with KMnO4and MnF2as manganese sources, to synthesize the red phosphor K3AlF6: Mn4+via the molten salt method. After the reaction, impurities such as NH4HF2were removed by washing with a dilute H2O2solution. The microstructure, photoluminescence properties, thermal quenching behavior, and application in warm white light-emitting diodes (W-LEDs) of the K3AlF6: Mn4+phosphors were investigated. The results indicate that the phosphors prepared by this method consist of a single pure phase. By adjusting the molten salt content, the morphology of the product can be transformed from nanoparticle-like to nanorod-like structures. All products exhibit the characteristic red emission of Mn4+under blue and violet light excitation, with the optimally doped sample achieving an internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 69% under blue light excitation. The combination of the obtained K3AlF6: Mn4+with the yellow phosphor YAG enabled the fabrication of W-LEDs. These W-LEDs achieved a color rendering index (Ra) of 86.8, a luminous efficacy (LE) of 77 lm/W, and a correlated color temperature (CCT) of 3690 K, along with excellent color stability under operating conditions.

Preparation of carbon dots-loaded electrospun PVP/PVDF composite membranes for detection of iodide ion

Yongfeng Zhao,Zhenyang Cao,Xiaochen Wu,Chunyan Sun

In this paper, a highly selective solid-phase composite fluorescent sensor (BCDS@PVP/PVDF) for detecting iodide ions (I−) was synthesized. This sensor was prepared by electrospinning carbon dots (CDs), polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) into a composite nanofiber membrane. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) morphology analysis indicated that the addition of carbon dots had no effect on the spun membranes. Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) analyses demonstrated that the carbon dots were successfully loaded onto the electrospun membranes. The I− detection experiments demonstrated that the fluorescence quenching phenomenon occurred within the range of 0-100 mg/L, and a linear relationship was observed within the range of 0.3-0.5 mg/L. The detection limit was at 0.17 mg/L. The fluorescence quenching mechanism was initially attributed to dynamic quenching by UV absorption and fluorescence lifetime. This study provides a new approach for the development of portable fluorescence sensors for I− detection.

Synergistic Band/Trap Engineering in RbCdF3:Mn2+ for High-Resolution Dual-Mode X-Ray Imaging: Ghost-Free Real-Time and Multi-Cycle Time-Delay

Shasha Wang,Xinxin Han,Dongxi Liu,Linghang Kong,Tao Hu,Qilin Wei,Hui Peng,Ruosheng Zeng,Bingsuo Zou

Conventional storage scintillators are plagued by rapid information fading during X-ray real-time imaging at room temperature, a consequence of intense X-ray excited persistent luminescence (XEPL) from high-density shallow traps. To address this limitation, we demonstrate a synergistic band/trap engineering strategy in RbCdF 3 :Mn 2+ via Cs + /Eu 3+ co-doping. Specifically, Cs + doping narrows the bandgap, increasing the carrier density for radiative recombination and boosting the radioluminescence (RL) intensity to 1000%. In parallel, Eu 3+ doping introduces charge-compensated defect clusters ( 2 E u C d · − V C d ′ ′ $2Eu_{Cd}^ \cdot - V_{Cd}^{^{\prime\prime}}$ ) that elevate the deep trap density to 933%. This synergistic optimization yields a high-performance scintillator exhibiting an RL intensity of 625% relative to BGO, an ultra-low detection limit of 102.3 nGy s −1 , and an ultra-weak room-temperature XEPL that is visually undetectable and weaker than commercial LuAG:Ce. Notably, the regulatory effect of this co-doping strategy is demonstrated to be universal across the ABF 3 :Mn 2+ series. Furthermore, a flexible scintillator film fabricated from this material achieves an ultra-high spatial resolution of 22.7 lp mm −1 , substantially surpassing most reported counterparts. It enables both ghost-free X-ray real-time imaging and stable multi-cycle X-ray time-delay imaging (XTDI) via thermal stimulation. This work establishes a versatile material design platform for high-performance, low-dose X-ray imaging in both real-time and delayed modes.

A photothermal self-healing solid like super slippery coating with active, passive anti-icing and anti-corrosion combination based on micro-arc oxidation

Bingce Liu,Bingzhi Li,Enyu Guo,Zhihao Zhou,Yibo Ouyang,Xiao-Bo Chen,Huijun Kang,Zongning Chen,Tongmin Wang

Lightweight alloys have gained prominence in weight-critical applications, however their susceptibility to corrosion and inability to mitigate surface ice accumulation remain significant limitations. In this study, these challenges are addressed by developing a photothermal self-healing, solid-like super-slippery coating using magnesium-lithium (Mg-Li) alloy as a substrate. Through synchrotron tomography, the mechanically cross-linked architecture of the cured super-slippery coating integrated with a micro-arc oxidation (MAO) layer is revealed. Experimental results demonstrate that the coating achieves autonomous repair under natural sunlight. In-situ metallographic microscopy further captures dynamic paraffin redistribution during the self-healing process. The contact angle of the FSSC-MAO coating reaches 100 ° , which effectively reduces the actual contact area between surface droplets and the coating and extending surface icing time by fivefold, while the active photothermal functionality enables rapid de-icing (outdoor temperature: −8°C) via sunlight exposure. Outdoor field tests validate the coating’s dual capability in corrosion resistance and ice mitigation, highlighting its potential for real-world applications in low-temperature environment.

Machine vision and deep learning dual-driven intelligent sensing platform for Zn ion and EDTA monitoring in soil filtrate, plant sap and tap water using ratiometric-fluorescence carbon dots-based paper chip

Liru Yan,Bianxiang Zhang,Wei Zhou,Chao Feng,Caihong Zhang,Yan Zhang,Shaomin Shuang,Lihong Shi

Highly-intelligent user-friendly sensing strategies are becoming desperately demanded and indispensable in under-developed nations and resources-insufficient areas. Herein, an intelligent sensing platform has been successfully established incorporating smartphone with machine vision and deep learning function, 3D-printed handheld device, and paper microfluidic chip stained with tri-emission ratiometric-fluorescence (FL) carbon dots (TCDs). The intelligent system can quantify zinc ion (Zn 2+ ) and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) only through a single-step operation on smartphone. TCDs, engendering bright blue and cyan FL as well as weak red one at 370 nm excitation, were prepared hydrothermally using tartaric acid and alizarin carmine. As-prepared TCDs exhibit continuous FL color transformation from blue to purple to blue with the addition of Zn 2+ and EDTA. Subsequently, TCDs-based paper chip is explored to enable field-portable sequential discrimination of Zn 2+ and EDTA. Intriguingly, the proposed sensor is utilized for fast and intelligent quantification of Zn 2+ and EDTA in soil filtrate, plant sap and tap water with a low detection limit of 3.8 μM and 7.9 μM, as well as wide linear correlations of 0–280 µM and 0–560 µM, respectively. It is eagerly anticipated that our methodologies will become the strong impetus for new round of technological transformation for analyte assay.

Skin-Inspired Design of Self-Healing Coatings Integrating Interface-Liquid Repellency and Corrosion Resistance

Bingzhi Li,Bingce Liu,Enyu Guo,Zhihao Zhou,Yibo Ouyang,Xiao-Bo Chen,Huijun Kang,Zongning Chen,Tongmin Wang

Designing coatings with a wide spectrum of functions such as self-healing, liquid repellency, anticorrosion, and a high level of mechanical robustness is crucial in engineering applications. However, simultaneously meeting two or more conflicting requirements remains a challenge. In this work, a holistic, skin-inspired tri-layer coating is proposed to resolve the conflicting requirements of self-healing, liquid repellency, and corrosion resistance in hydrophilic polymer materials. The rational design of multiple gradients in self-healing, wetting, and strength endows a sustained liquid repellency, corrosion resistance, and self-healing even under harsh environments, as well as strong adhesion with metal substrate. The skin-inspired tri-layer coating exhibits complete self-healing even in harsh aqueous environments, owing to the synergistic interaction between layers. The tri-layer structure consists of a hydrophobic epidermis-like barrier layer, a hydrophilic self-healing polymer middle layer, and a micro-arc oxidation porous base layer that provide strong interfacial adhesion and mechanical support. The hydrophilic polymer layer, composed of polyvinyl alcohol and tannic acid, rapidly repairs damaged coating regions through hydrogen bonding and diffusion, triggered by water molecules. Meanwhile, the hydrophobic outer layer acts as a sealing barrier, limiting excessive diffusion of the hydrophilic polymer. Such an integrated skin-inspired coating strategy provides new insights into design and manufacturing multifunctional polymeric coatings to tackle the critical challenges in a variety of engineering services.

Constructing Deep-Ultraviolet Nonlinear Optical Crystals via Synergistic Combination of Fluorinated Polyhedra and Polymerized BO3 Units

Hongkang Su,Chenxu Li,Jiahao Jiao,Zhihua Yang,Shilie Pan,Min Zhang

The development of modern science urgently needs the vital tool of deep-ultraviolet (DUV, λ < 200nm) all-solid-state lasers, while the exploration of DUV nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals is limited by their strict application conditions. Herein, we propose a structural design strategy for developing novel DUV NLO optical crystals through synergistic assembly of fluorinated polyhedral and planar B─O groups with balanced optical properties, namely, large second-harmonic generation (SHG) response, appropriate birefringence, and wide band gap. The key to achieve consistent alignment of π-conjugated functional groups lies in leveraging the “shearing” effect and directional polymerization capability of fluorinated polyhedra. Furthermore, based on this strategy, a series of alkali-metal fluorooxoborates M x (NH 4 ) 2- x B 8 O 12 F 2 (M = K, Rb; 0 < x < 2; KABF, RABF) and CsNH 4 B 8 O 12 F 2 (CABF) were successfully designed and synthesized. Driven by uniformly arranged [BO 3 F] 4− and chain-like aggregated [BO 3 ] 3− functional groups, these compounds achieve a well-balanced optimization of strong SHG response (1.6–1.7 × KDP, 1064–532 nm; 0.4–0.5 × BBO, 532–266 nm, respectively) and the shortest type-I phase-matching wavelength (161.5–168.6 nm). The inspiring results highlight their potential as candidates for DUV NLO crystals and provide support for the structure construction strategy using a synergistic combination of fluorinated polyhedra and polymerized BO 3 units.

Design and fabrication strategy for wear- and corrosion-resistant MAO coatings upon Mg-Li alloys via incorporation of conductive TiBCN ceramic nanoparticles

Bingzhi Li,Bingce Liu,Enyu Guo,Keqiang Su,Zhihao Zhou,Yibo Ouyang,Xingchen Li,Huijun Kang,Zongning Chen,Xiao-Bo Chen,Tongmin Wang

Magnesium-lithium (Mg-Li) alloys are promising lightweight materials for engineering applications, but their use is limited by poor wear and corrosion resistance. To address those challenges, micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coatings were fabricated on Mg-Li alloy LA81 using electrolytes containing conductive ceramic nanoparticles (TiBCN). Results suggest that TiBCN enhances electrolyte conductivity and altering the arc discharge behavior, thereby reducing overall porosity of the resultant MAO coatings. Comprehensive characterization including measurements of coating thickness, microstructure, triboelectrochemical and corrosion resistance identify 2.5   g/L TiBCN as the optimal concentration. This formulation exhibits enhanced corrosion resistance, wear resistance and a notably low pore density. Three-dimensional evolution of corrosion in the optimized MAO coating was examined using synchrotron X-ray computed tomography. In corrosive environments, the combined effects of corrosion and expansion of corrosion products alter size, shape, and number of microdefects in MAO coatings over time. These changes were driven by the interactions between localized corrosion propagation and the accumulation and expansion of corrosion products. Ultimately, neighboring micro-defects merged, forming interconnected through-pores and accelerating MAO coating degradation.

Microplasma Electrolytic Oxidation-Constructed Pd-Based Catalyst for Efficient and Green Selective Oxidation of Silanes

Jun Zhou,Liwen Ma,Yue Yin,Zhaodong Li,Sitong Liu,Junchao Ma,Yunong Li,Xiaoqing Cao,Song Li,Gaowu Qin

The green and selective oxidation of silanes to silanols has attracted considerable attention owing to its extensive applications across various industries. In this study, we introduce a novel instantaneous low-voltage microplasma electrolytic oxidation (ILVPEO) strategy to fabricate a highly efficient Pd/MgO/Mg catalytic system for the selective oxidation of silane to silanol. This approach leverages in situ microplasma effect to simultaneously decompose [PdCl4]2– and oxidize the Mg substrate, yielding Pd/MgO/Mg composites that features ultrasmall Pd nanoparticles (2.1 nm with high monodispersity) uniformly anchored on a porous and hydrophilic MgO support. These characteristics endow the catalyst with outstanding performance in the oxidation of phenylmethyldimethylsilane (PhMe2SiH) to the corresponding phenylmethyldimethylsilanol (PhMe2SiOH), achieving a remarkable turnover frequency (TOF) of 11,698 mol mol–1 h–1(129,260 mol mol–1 h–1), significantly surpassing conventional systems. Notably, the reaction proceeds using water as the primary oxygen source and generates hydrogen as the only byproduct, aligning closely with the principles of green chemistry. Moreover, the Pd/MgO catalyst demonstrates excellent durability, maintaining over a 90% product yield across 20 consecutive reaction cycles. It also displays broad substrate compatibility, efficiently oxidizing a diverse array of silanes with steric effects influencing the activity. This work presents a sustainable and scalable catalytic platform for silane oxidation, offering substantial potential for green industrial applications.
