In recent years, with the increasing consciousness on environment protection, fluorine-free water-repellent agents in textile industry have attracted considerable attention. Herein, we proposed a new strategy to prepare bio-based fluorine-free branched polyurethane@organosilicon water-repellent agent for cotton fabric (CF). Branched polyurethane (BPU) with long alkyl chains was firstly synthesized through the reaction of glycerin monostearate extracted from natural palm fruit, toluene diisocyanate, trimethylopropane and N-methyl diethanolamine, and then utilized to coat the C24-28 olefin modified hydroxyl silicone oil (C24-28 HSO) by emulsification procedure to obtain branched polyurethane@organosilicon (BPU@C24-28 HSO) water-repellent agent. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and 1 H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy confirmed the chemical structures of BPU, C24-28 HSO and BPU@C24-28 HSO water-repellent agent. The biomass carbon content of the water-repellent agent reached 54.0%. Transmission electron microscope demonstrated that the BPU@C24-28 HSO water-repellent agent appeared obvious spherical shape with core-shell structure. Owing to the introduction of organosilicon, the water-repellent agent significantly improved the softness of the CF. In addition, the CF finished by the BPU@C24-28 HSO water-repellent agent also exhibited excellent water-repellent score of 90+, high water contact angle of 141.6° and superior surface stability. Our findings provided a direction to prepare environmental-friendly and high-performance water-repellent agents for various fabrics.

Functional textiles are widely concerned because of their potential applications in various fields, water-repellent textiles play a vital role in functional textiles because of their huge practical needs. However, the realization of water-repellent finishing agent with high stability and heat resistance has remained an open challenge, limiting the further application of water-repellent textiles. Herein, waterborne polyurethane (WPU) is prepared by introducing C = C bonds into polyurethane (PU) side chains using trimethylolpropane monoallyl ether (TMPME) as a grafting agent by self-emulsification. As a seed emulsion, WPU is further copolymerized with acrylate monomers to prepare waterborne polyurethane/acrylate (WPUA). Interestingly, the WPUA emulsions with obvious core–shell structure exhibit excellent storage stability and heat resistance, which can cover the fabric surface and form a thin film. The static contact angle up to 151° imparts excellent water repellency to the fabric. Thus, a water-repellent finishing agent was successfully assembled, which possesses high reference value for designing and preparing such materials. Graphical Abstract

To meet the environmental requirement of foam extinguishing agent, a novel fluorine-free surfactant named amino-terminated polyether modified silicone (ATPMS) was successfully synthesized, and then in combination with hydrocarbon surfactant prepared fluorine-free foam extinguishing agent. The study carefully investigated surface tension, foamability, foam stability and fire extinguishing performance of fluorine-free foam extinguishing agent. The results indicate that ATPMS has a low surface tension of 21.17 mN/m, which combined with hydrocarbon surfactant at the mass concentration ratio of 1:1 imparts high surface activity. The sodium lauryl ether sulfate (AES)/ATPMS system owes the optimal comprehensive performance with an initial foam height value of 85.8 mm, a surface tension value of 24.76 mN/m and a foam stability value (the ratio of foam height between initial foam and five-minute foam) of 64.0 % at critical micelle concentration ( CMC ), respectively. Fire suppression test shows that the obtained fluorine-free foam extinguishing agent is effective in fighting diesel pool fires. The firefighting efficiency of foam agent links to the mixing chamber structure of compressed air foam fire extinguishing system (CAFS). When the mixing chamber of CAFS has a recurrent segment length of 50 mm and the filled particle size of 10 mm, the firefighting efficiency of fluorine-free foam extinguishing agent is optimal with a fire extinguishing time of 33 s and a temperature drop rate of 6.49 °C/s.
