Polype ntafluoropropane glycidyl ether (PPFEE), a new random block hydroxyl-terminated polyfluoroether, was synthesized successfully by cationic ring-opening polymerization of 2-(2,2,3,3,3-pentafluoropropoxymethyl) oxirane, and its molecular structure was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometry, and gel permeation chromatography. The PPFEE-based polyurethane elastomers featuring fluorine in their side chains were prepared using PPFEE as soft segments, polyisocyanate polyaryl polymethylene isocyanate as hard segments, and dibutyltin dilaurate as catalysts under different curing conditions. The microphase separation, mechanical performance, and thermal behavior of the elastomers were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, uniaxial tensile test, and thermal gravimetric analysis, respectively. Based on the results, the percentage of hard segments dissolved into the soft segments of elastomers was opposite to the change in breaking strength. The PPFEE-based polyurethane elastomer cured with 20 wt% PAPI at the curing temperature of 50 °C displayed the maximum tensile elongation of 2.26 MPa with an elongation at break of nearly 150%. The increased contents of PAPI can effectively strengthen the tensile strength, and the maximum tensile elongation was 3.04 MPa with an elongation at break of nearly 90% when the content of PAPI was 26 wt%. In addition, the PPFEE-based polyurethane elastomers exhibited excellent resistance to thermal decomposition and a sharp weight loss temperature at around 371 °C. All the results demonstrated that the PPFEE may be a potential polymeric binder as one of the ingredients applied to future propellant formulations. Keywords:fluoropolymer;polyurethane elastomers;mechanical property;thermal behavior

The pesticide residues in agri-foods are threatening people’s health. This study aims to establish a fast and low-cost surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) method for the on-site detection of flumetsulam in wheat. The two-step modified concentrated gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) acted as the SERS substrate with the aid of NaCl and MgSO4. NaCl is served as the activator to modify AuNPs, while MgSO4is served as the aggregating agent to form high-density hot spots. The activation and aggregation are two essential collaborative procedures to generate remarkable SERS enhancement and achieve the trace-level detection of flumetsulam. This method exhibits good enhancement effect with an enhancement factor of 106and wide linear range (5–1000 μg/L). With simple pretreatment, the flumetsulam residue in real wheat samples can be successfully detected with the limit of detection (LOD) down to 0.01 μg/g, which is below the maximum residue limit of flumetsulam in wheat (0.05 μg/g) set in China. The recovery of flumetsulam residue in wheat ranges from 88.3% to 95.6%. These results demonstrate that the proposed SERS method is a powerful technique for the detection of flumetsulam in wheat, which implies the great application potential in the rapid detection of other pesticide residues in various agri-foods.Keywords:SERS;flumetsulam;AuNPs;wheat

Fluoroether approach has been extensively employed as an alternative to conventional fluorinated surfactants; however, it faces challenges such as inadequate performance of short fluoroether chains and environmental contamination from long fluoroether chains. This study aims to address the conflict between environmental compatibility and the performance of fluoroether surfactants. The design of the surfactants is centered around the OC chain (CF3(OCF2)n–), utilizing reduced fluorine content to achieve superior surface activity. A series of surfactant molecules featuring elongated hydrophobic chains and dual-chain structures have been synthesized and characterized. All of the molecules have good surface activity at low concentrations. Among them, CF3(OCF2)4CH2O(CH2)3SO2NH(CH2)3N+(CH3)2CH2COO– (OC4F-B), which employs a strategy of extending the hydrophobic chain by insertion of –CH2O(CH2)3–, shows the best performance. This surfactant can achieve a surface tension of 20 mN/m at a concentration of 0.005 wt %, which is 20 times lower than that required for CF3(OCF2)4CONH(CH2)3N+(CH3)2CH2COO– (OC4-betaine) to attain the same surface tension. In contrast, (CF3(OCF2)3CH2O(CH2)3SO2NHCH2CH2)2N+(CH3)CH2COO– (DOC3F-B), utilizing both dual-chain and extended carbon chain strategies, exhibits a critical micelle concentration that is diminished by 2 orders of magnitude relative to OC3-betaine, reaching to 0.047 g/L. Merely adjusting the length of the fluorocarbon chain is insufficient to reconcile the conflict between the performance and environmental impact of fluorinated surfactants. This study introduces an innovative approach by incorporating hydrocarbon hydrophobic chains and adopting a dual-chain design, thereby addressing this challenge effectively.

Recently, metal halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have been becoming a kind of promising efficient luminescent material and drawn remarkable attention in the development of light-emitting devices. However, during the fabrication process of perovskite QDs based light emitting diodes (Pe-QLED), the vacuum processing is necessary for constructing of perovskite QDs/charge transport layer (CTL) structure. Taking the large-scale production into consideration, the all-solution processed Pe-QLED have great potential, but remain great challenge. Herein, we show that by employing hydrofluoroethers (such as HFE 7100) as the orthogonal solvent, the perovskite QDs/CTL multilayer structure can be effectively obtained via solution process, thus promoting the successful fabrication of all-solution Pe-QLED. Through the surface fluorous ligand modification, ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) are directly dispersed in HFE 7100 and used for solution processed electron transport layer. As the result, all-solution processed CsPbBr 3 Pe-QLEDs have been realized with the performance of a luminance of 1661 cd/m 2 , a peak EQE of 0.37%, and a peak CE of 0.72 cd/A. These results indicate that our strategy is highly effective in the development of high-performance all-solution processed perovskite based optoelectronic devices.

Nanoplastics (NPs, < 1000 nm) interact with chemicals and biomolecules to produce chemical−/eco-corona, altering the environmental destiny, bioavailability, and toxicity of plastic particles and co-occurring chemicals. This study employs exogenous (humic acid, HA) and endogenous (bovine serum albumin, BSA) natural organic matter (NOM) to investigate the eco-corona formation on NPs and explore the interfacial effects of eco-corona and 6:2 chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonate (Cl-PFESA, commonly named as F-53B) on zebrafish ( Danio rerio ) after 7 days of exposure. Our results indicated significant changes in growth and developmental indices of zebrafish embryos among all eco-corona groups ( p < 0.05). Additionally, NFB (BSA-corona, 1 mg/L NPs + 200 μg/L F-53B + 10 mg/L BSA), NFH (HA-corona, 1 mg/L NPs + 200 μg/L F-53B + 10 mg/L HA) and NFHB (BSA-HA-corona, 1 mg/L NPs + 200 μg/L F-53B + 10 mg/L BSA + 10 mg/L HA) showed elevated bioaccumulation of NPs, ROS generation and induction of apoptosis. Transcriptomic analysis showed the number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) in the following order: BSA-HA-corona (NFHB (2953) > HA-corona (NFH (2797) > NH (2721) > F-53B (2292) > NF (2033) > BSA-corona (NFB (687) > NB (450)), and no DEGs were detected in the single NP compared to the control. Further, the PI3K-AKT, immune system, endocrine system, digestive system, infectious diseases, and neurovegetative disease pathways showed sensitive responses in the NFH/NFHB groups compared to those in the NFB group. Therefore, the interactive effects of NPs and F-53B on zebrafish embryos were lower in the presence of BSA-corona than those in HA- or HA-BSA-coronas, indicating a relationship between the formation of diverse eco-coronas on NPs by multiple NOM and an associated increase in the interfacial toxicological effects of plastic particles and F-35B in freshwater organisms.

Novel alternatives of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), chlorinated polyfluorinated ether sulfonates (Cl-PFAESs) are increasingly being detected in the aquatic and terrestrial environment. Previous studies mainly focused on aquatic biota; however, the knowledge about the ecotoxicological risk they pose to terrestrial plants was still lacking. In this study, the accumulation of two Cl-PFAES (6:2 and 8:2 Cl-PFAES) and PFOS in wheat seedlings at environmentally relevant levels (50 and 100 μg L −1 ) was investigated. Concentrations of Cl-PFAESs in the roots were an order of magnitude higher than those in shoots, indicating that they were primarily accumulated in the roots. The values of root and shoot bioconcentration factor was comparable between 6:2 Cl-PFAES and PFOS. However, these indexes of 8:2 Cl-PFAES were 42–91% higher and 70–76% lower than PFOS, respectively. As a result, 6:2 Cl-PFAES had a similar accumulation pattern as PFOS, whereas 8:2 Cl-PFAES was predominantly restricted to the roots, which might be attributed to their hydrophobicity and carbon chain length. In addition, at 250 mg L −1 of Cl-PFAESs, plant biomass and pigment content were 24–30% and 0.4–18%, respectively, which were lower than those of PFOS. As compared with PFOS, Cl-PFAESs induced higher levels of root membrane permeability, reactive oxygen species and malondialdehyde content, as well as reduced the activities of antioxidant enzymes and glutathione content. These suggested the occurrence of a severer oxidative damage and the breakdown of the antioxidant defence system in wheat cells. Therefore, we conclude that Cl-PFAESs might pose a higher potential threat to the environment than PFOS.

Developing a long-term stable electrolyte is one of the most enormous challenges for Li–O2 batteries. Equally, the high flammability of frequently used solvents seriously weakens the electrolyte safety in Li–O2 batteries, which inevitably restricts their commercial applications. Here, a binary mixture of highly concentrated tetraglyme electrolyte (HCG4) and 1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethyl 2,2,3,3-tetrafluoropropyl ether (TTE) was used for a novel electrolyte (HCG4/TTE) in Li–O2 batteries, which exhibit good wettability, enhanced ionic conductivity, considerable nonflammability, and high electrochemical stability. Being a co-solvent, TTE can contribute to increasing ionic conductivity and to improving flame retardance of the as-prepared electrolyte. The cell with this novel electrolyte displays an enhanced cycling stability, resulting from the high electrochemical stability during cycling and the formation of electrochemically stable interfaces prevents parasitic reactions occurring on the Li anode. These results presented here demonstrate a novel electrolyte with a high electrochemical stability and considerable safety for Li–O2 batteries.

This study was designed to investigate possible protective effects of sevoflurane on myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI) and its impact on expression of HIF-1α and caspase-3 in rats, so as to provide new insights for the treatment of MIRI. Forty SD rats were randomly divided into four groups (n=10) including Sham operation (Sham), ischemia-reperfusion (IR), sevoflurane preconditioning group (Sevo-Pre) and sevoflurane post-conditioning (Sevo-Post) groups. Perfusion was performed using ex vivo heart perfusion. The baseline values of cardiac function were recorded in each group at the end of balanced perfusion and after 60 min of reperfusion. Myocardial infarct size (MIS) was calculated at the end of perfusion using TTC staining. Levels of HIF-1α and caspase-3 protein and HIF-1α (western blotting) and Bcl-2 mRNA (RT-qPCR) were detected at the end of reperfusion. Our results showed no significant differences in cardiac function between the groups at the end of the balanced perfusion. After reperfusion for 60 min, however, the cardiac functions of the Sevo-Pre and Sevo-Post groups were significantly better than those in the IR group, and the MIS at the end of reperfusion was significantly decreased. Western blotting and RT-qPCR showed that expression of HIF-1α protein was significantly increased, expression of caspase-3 protein was significantly decreased and expression of HIF-1α and Bcl-2 mRNA were significantly increased in Sevo-Pre and Sevo‑Post groups compared with the levels in the IR group at the end of reperfusion. There were no significant differences in experimental results between Sevo-Pre and Sevo-Post groups. Our data support the idea that sevoflurane can improve MIRI in rats by improving cardiac function and reducing MIS. This protective effect seems to be achieved by activation of HIF-1α and inhibition of caspase-3.

As the first step during discharge, the mass transfer of oxygen should play a crucial role in Li–air batteries to tailor the growth of discharge products, however, not enough attention has been paid to this issue. Herein, we introduce an oxygen-enriching cosolvent, 1,2-(1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethoxy) ethane (FE1), into the electrolyte, and investigate its influence on the discharge performance. The incorporation of this novel cosolvent consistently enhances the oxygen solubility of the electrolyte, and improves the oxygen diffusivity following a volcano-shape trend peaking at 50 % FE1. It is interesting that the discharge capacities obtained with the investigated electrolytes share the similar volcano trends as the oxygen transport under 50 mA g carbon −1 and higher current densities. The improved oxygen diffusion could benefit the volumetric utilization of the air cathode, especially at the separator side, probably owing to the fast oxygen transport to moderate its concentration gradient. Our results demonstrate the importance of oxygen provision, which easily becomes the capacity-determining factor. Graphical Got Oxygen? The enhancement of oxygen provision is achieved by incorporating 1,2-(1,1,2,2-tetrafluoroethoxy) ethane as the cosolvent in the electrolyte. The oxygen's diffusivity, rather than solubility, exerts the principal effect on discharge performance of the Li–air battery, especially at higher current density, owing to the ameliorated oxygen's accessibility, which improves the utilization ratio of the whole air cathode.

Perfluoroether Carboxylic Acids (PFECAs), which are substitutes for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), have been widely detected in various environmental matrices. PFECAs exhibit higher accumulation in plant leaves. Spatial heterogeneity of many contaminants in leaves can lead to varied ecological risks. However, the distribution patterns and metabolic impacts of PFECAs remain poorly understood in plants. In this study, an integrated approach employing desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry imaging (DESI-MSI), transcriptomics, metabolomics and molecular docking was used to investigate the spatially resolved distribution and metabolic effects of two PFECAs (HFPO-DA and HFPO-TA) in wheat. PFECAs, especially HFPO-DA, were observed to accumulate predominantly in the leaf margins. Significant spatial variations in gene expression and metabolite profiles were identified between the inner and outer regions of leaves. Notably, genes associated with photosynthesis were significantly downregulated in the leaf margins compared to the central tissue. Exposure to PFECAs also resulted in decreased chlorophyll content in leaves. Differentially expressed metabolites (DEMs) and genes (DEGs) associated with oxidative stress were observed to exhibit abnormal regulation at the leaf margins. Molecular docking simulations revealed that PFECAs preferentially bound to key proteins, such as ferredoxin-NADP+ reductase (FNR) in the photosynthetic electron transport chains and protoporphyrinogen oxidase (PPO) in chlorophyll biosynthesis. These interactions likely disrupted photosynthetic function and chlorophyll synthesis, ultimately contributing to leaf yellowing in the leaf margins. These findings provide important insights into the spatially explicit toxicological mechanisms of PFECAs in wheat and establish a foundation for future research on spatial toxicology of PFAS in plants.

The inefficiency of traditional pesticides leads to significant resource waste, severe environmental pollution, and potential threats to human health. Pesticide microcapsules present a promising strategy for developing environmentally friendly, safe, and sustained-release formulations. In this study, we produced degradable starch nanocrystals (SNCs) via acid hydrolysis and employed octenyl succinic anhydride-modified SNCs (O-SNCs) to fabricate pesticide microcapsules. Specifically, O-SNCs were used to emulsify molten lambda-cyhalothrin (LC), forming a Pickering emulsion. Subsequent interfacial polymerization of this emulsion yielded microcapsules, whose size can be adjusted by varying the O-SNCs content. These microcapsules exhibit high encapsulation efficiency and excellent storage stability. Furthermore, they demonstrate superior sustained pest control efficacy while significantly reducing acute toxicity to zebrafish and earthworms. This study provides valuable insights for designing sustainable, environmentally friendly, and highly effective pesticide formulations.

Plain Language Summary Background: Sevoflurane impairs neurogenesis and cognitive function in the developing brain; however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the role of fatty acid β-oxidation (FAO) in neural stem/progenitor cells (NSPCs) as a potential factor in sevoflurane-induced neurogenesis inhibition and cognitive deficits. Methods: NSPCs, NE-4C cells, and postnatal day 7 (PND 7) rats were exposed to sevoflurane. Cell viability was measured using the methylthiazolyldiphenyl-tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay. Neurogenesis was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Apoptosis was detected via terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL). Cognitive function was tested with the Morris water maze. Lipid metabolism profiles were analyzed through lipidomics. Message RNA (mRNA) expression levels of key FAO enzymes and the major carnitine transporter were quantified by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR). Protein expression of carnitine palmitoyltransferase 1a (CPT1a) and nuclear peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) was examined by Western blotting. CPT1a enzymatic activity was determined using a biochemical assay. FAO activity was measured with the FAOBlue assay. Results: Sevoflurane exposure impaired neurogenesis and cognitive function. In NSPCs, sevoflurane exposure induced extensive alterations in lipid metabolism intermediates, inhibited the mRNA expression of acyl-CoA oxidase 1 ( ACOX1 ), acyl-CoA oxidase 3 ( ACOX3 ), hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase beta subunit ( HADHB ), CPT1a , carnitine palmitoyltransferase 2 ( CPT2 ), acyl-CoA dehydrogenase short-chain ( ACADS ), and solute carrier family 22 member 5 ( SLC22A5 ), suppressed FAO activity, reduced CPT1a expression and activity, and decreased PPARα levels in the nucleus. Enhancing FAO activity in NSPCs ameliorated the negative effects of sevoflurane on neurogenesis. Overexpression of CPT1a rescued the sevoflurane-induced inhibition of FAO activity and neurogenesis in NE-4C cells. Pretreatment with palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), a PPAPα agonist, increased both the nuclear content of PPARα protein and the expression of CPT1a in NSPCs and rat hippocampus after sevoflurane exposure. Furthermore, pretreatment with PEA or the CPT1a substrate carnitine rescued sevoflurane-induced damage to FAO activity in NSPCs, neurogenesis, and cognitive function. Conclusion: Sevoflurane impairs neurogenesis and cognitive function by suppressing FAO in NSPCs of the developing brain. Boosting FAO activity in NSPCs could be a potential strategy to prevent sevoflurane-induced cognitive deficits. Plain Language Summary This study explored how sevoflurane, an anesthetic, affects brain development by impairing neurogenesis and cognitive function. Researchers found that sevoflurane disrupts fatty acid β-oxidation (FAO) in neural stem/progenitor cells (NSPCs), leading to changes in lipid metabolism and reduced expression of key enzymes. Enhancing FAO activity, either by overexpressing certain proteins or using compounds like palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) and carnitine, helped mitigate these negative effects. This suggests that targeting FAO in NSPCs could be a promising approach to counteract sevoflurane-induced cognitive deficits in the developing brain.
