Radon (Rn) is an important contributing factor to lung cancer. Activated carbon (AC) is currently the only Rn adsorbent for industrial applications. However, the effect of the key pore size of AC on Rn adsorption remains unclear, and enhancement of the Rn adsorption performance when using AC is still a challenge. In this work, grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations were performed to simulate the Rn adsorption ability of AC with different pore sizes. The adsorption selectivity of AC with pore sizes from 0.42 nm to 0.60 nm for Rn in the atmospheric environment was much greater than that for nitrogen and oxygen. The Rn adsorption performance was also investigated using KOH-modified activated carbon (KAC) with different pore sizes experimentally prepared using high-temperature roasting. The results showed that when the pore volume of KAC was significantly increased to approximately 0.55 nm, the Rn adsorption performance was obviously improved. Its adsorption coefficient reached 6.50 ± 0.11 m 3 kg −1 , which was 46.7 % higher than that of AC. After heating and regeneration in air, the Rn adsorption performance of KAC was basically unchanged. Combined with the comparative analysis using theoretical and experimental results, the relationship between the Rn adsorption performance of KAC and the pore volume at 0.55 nm is determined, and the accuracy of the GCMC calculation results was substantiated. This research provides a theoretical basis and an experimental method for improving the Rn adsorption performance of AC.

Radon (Rn) is a universally known indoor radioactive gas that poses a significant threat to human health. Activated carbon (AC) is the only commercial Rn adsorbent; its adsorption performance is extremely limited due to too few micropores. A series of nickel nanoparticles supported on AC (Ni/AC) composites, combining abundant micropores with open metal sites, is rationally designed for adsorbing Rn via a two-step process consisting of impregnation and high-temperature reduction. The Rn adsorption performance of the Ni/AC composites is obviously improved due to the introduction of nickel nanoparticles. The adsorption coefficient of Ni/AC calcined at 800 °C reaches 6.56 ± 0.14 m3 kg−1 at 25 °C and 1 bar, 48% higher than that of AC. The Ni/AC Rn adsorption coefficient is similar over five cycles. The fine and homogeneous dispersion of nickel nanoparticles, the appropriate chemical state of nickel and the high content of Ni0 synergistically promote Rn adsorption on Ni/AC. Experiments verify that Ni/AC composites are a promising candidate for the adsorption of Rn in the atmospheric environment.

Radioactive radon decays into a stable daughter product, 210 Pb, which was used as the detection target to determine the radon radiation dose in a new technique. Pb 2+ triggers DNAzyme to cleave a molecular beacon (MB), resulting in the stem–loop structure opening and forming two single DNA strands (ssDNA). The ssDNA binds to unmodified gold nanoparticles and effectively prevents their aggregation in a salt solution. The detached enzyme strands continue to complement the remaining MB to amplify the response signal. The method proposed in this study exhibited a good linear relationship for Pb 2+ and radon concentrations in the range of 6.22 × 10 2 –1.02 × 10 5 Bq h/m 3 with a detection limit of 186.48 Bq h/m 3 using an ultraviolet–visible spectrometer. In practical applications, this sensitive method can avoid radioactive damage in field testing, and the detection limit meets the national standard in China. Importantly, this simple, highly sensitive strategy uses simple equipment and has a strong anti-interference ability.

Radon (Rn) is a radioactive inert gas, a major source of natural radiation exposure to humans, and a leading cause of lung cancer in nonsmokers. In this study, a method combining micropores and metal sites was employed. Bamboo activated carbon, modified with alkali treatment to create different pore structures, was selected as the carrier, onto which silver and nickel metals were loaded. The goal was to optimize the loading amount and improve the Rn adsorption performance of the bamboo activated carbon, developing a highly efficient Rn adsorbent. Nickel nitrate impregnation treatment created micropores in the carrier, while silver nitrate obstructed the micropore structure. The optimal impregnation concentration varied depending on the pore structure of the carrier. After nickel was loaded onto the unmodified BC, the Rn adsorption coefficient increased. For the alkali-modified BCK0.75, which has the highest proportion of key pore volume for Rn adsorption, silver loading led to a decrease in the Rn adsorption coefficient. However, for the alkali-modified BCK1.5, which has pore sizes larger than the key size for Rn adsorption, the Rn adsorption coefficients increased after loading with nickel and silver, reaching 11.36 ± 0.21 and 9.25 ± 0.12 L/g, respectively representing improvements of 75.58 and 42.97%. Additionally, the proportion of micropore volume at 0.77 nm in Ni0.3@BCK1.5 was higher than that in BCK0.75. After five cycles of heating regeneration under nitrogen, Ni0.3@BCK1.5 and Ag0.6@BCK1.5 maintained 93.88 and 92.48% of their original Rn adsorption coefficients, respectively. Ni0.3@BCK1.5 not only contains metal sites but also retains the key pore size for Rn adsorption, which has good application value in Rn removal.

A novel signal amplification strategy based on a Pb 2+ -dependent DNAzyme is proposed for detecting Pb 2+ and radon through Pb 2+ -induced DNAzyme cleavage and the auto-assembly of a duplex-hemin/G-quadruplex with two loop-stem structures and enzyme-mimicking catalytic activity. First, the Pb 2+ -specific DNAzyme cleaves a primer sequence, which induces assembly of the hairpin probe Hp1/Hp2 into a double helix structure. Subsequently, a G-quadruplex forms after the insertion of hemin into the free G-rich sequences; this G-quadruplex possesses the catalytic activity of horseradish peroxidase and changes colorless TMB to its deeply colored oxidized state. lead-dependent DNAzymes were constantly sheared by Pb 2+ , and the free primer strands were continuously assembled into double chains by hybridization with hairpin probes, providing amplification for the detection of lead (II) and radon. Under the optimum conditions, there was a good linear relationship between ΔA and the lead concentration for Pb 2+ concentrations ranging from 2.58 to 18 nM, and the detection limit was 0.77 nM. Analysis of actual samples indicated that when the radon concentration was in the range of 5.41 × 10 3– 1.65 × 10 5 Bq·h/m 3 , the radon concentration and the absorbance were linearly correlated with a detection limit of 1.62 × 10 3 Bq·h/m 3 . During the process of radon sampling and detection, radiation damage from the radioactive gas radon can be avoided. In this study, the primer dissociated by the DNAzyme was in a free state. Compared with the fixed-state primer chain, this system will be more convenient for the biological analysis of ultratrace metal ions. Therefore, this strategy has good application prospects for biosensors and is expected to become a novel platform for the amplification and detection of metal ion signals.

Development of shielding materials for 222 Rn and γ radiation has crucial implications for ensuring the safety of individuals. This paper reports the synthesis of modified graphene nanosheets (MGNPs) via the reaction of KH560 with graphene nanosheets (GNPs), while melt blending and hot-press molding technique were used to fabricate a multifunctional polymer composite shielding material, MGNP/WB/PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate). Successful synthesis of MGNP was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis was utilized to assess the distribution of functional fillers within the cross-section of the polymer composite. Additionally, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) demonstrated that MGNP and WB particles enhance the thermal stability of the polymer composite materials. Compared to pure PMMA, 98.7% decrease in the radon diffusion coefficient was observed for MGNP1.5 wt%/PMMA composite material. In addition to enhance the radon-blocking characteristics of the polymer composites, inclusion of WB particles also boosts their shielding capacity against gamma radiation. The 222 Rn diffusion coefficient of MGNP1.5 wt%/WB25wt%/PMMA polymer composite material decreased by 99.6% and at energies of 60 KeV, 80 KeV, 122 KeV, 365 KeV, the mass attenuation coefficient (MAC) for the composite material increased by 0.79, 1.97, 0.57, and 0.05 cm 2 /g, respectively, compared to pure PMMA. Highlights The PMMA composite materials doped with graphene nanosheets demonstrate outstanding resistance to 222 Rn. Graphene nanosheets modified by KH560 exhibit favorable dispersion within PMMA. WB can further enhance the radon resistance of MGNP/WB/PMMA composite materials. The polymer composites exhibit excellent 222 Rn and gamma ray shielding properties.

This study proposes a novel method for the detection of inert gas radon using a label-free, specific, fluorescence-sensing aptamer in the context of PW17-OG system. This method utilizes the cyanine dye OliGreen (OG) as a signal reactor and the aptamer PW17 as a fluorescent identification probe. When OG integrates into the free curling PW17, a strong fluorescence signal is generated. After radon decays, the long lived naturally occurring radon progeny Pb being disposed and introduced to the system. Lead ions induce PW17 to form a stable G-quadruplex, thereby inhibiting the interaction between OG and PW17 and resulting in a reduction of the fluorescence intensity . The fluorescence intensity show a good linear relationship with lead ion and the radon concentration ( D ), thereinto, We fitted linear regression of radon concentration in the range of 0.92–4.22 (×10 4 Bqhm −3 ) to receive a good relationship between Δ F and the concentration of radon with the detection limit of 1963 Bqhm −3 . This method has been successfully applied for detecting standard cumulative concentration of radon and the detection limit reached the national standard of China. This sensitive method can exclude radiation damage in field testing, furthermore, it explores a new field in biological analysis using an aptamer to detected inorganic, gaseous, and radioactive materials.

Radon (Rn) is a radioactive noble gas and one of the primary culprits of lung cancer. Developing efficient adsorbents for Rn removal is of paramount importance, yet remains a daunting challenge due to the weak interaction between Rn and the adsorbent, particularly when low concentrations of Rn are present. Herein, a renewable biomass-derived carbon material consisting of rich ultramicropores was synthesized for record-high Rn adsorption under ambient condition. By meticulously selecting the carbonization precursor, chemical activator, and pyrolysis temperature, the optimized adsorbent, GC-700-2.4, exhibits a narrow pore distribution in the ultramicroporous range (<7 Å). The dynamic adsorption coefficient ( K d ) of GC-700-2.4 is determined to be 9.51 L/g based on radon breakthrough experiments, which is twice the value of the commercial Rn adsorbent, coconut shell activated carbon ( K d = 4.65 L/g), and outperforms all other reported Rn adsorbents under comparable conditions. The superior Rn adsorption performance of GC-700-2.4 is attributed to the narrow ultramicropores in GC-700-2.4 that show enhanced confinement effect toward Rn. Consequently, GC-700-2.4 shows promising potential for practical applications as an efficient and cost-effective Rn adsorbent.

The decay of radon gas in soil and buildings produces alpha radiation, which is the second leading cause of lung cancer in humans. Therefore, by conveniently detecting radon gas in the environment, potential sources of danger can be identified early, and necessary measures can be taken to protect human health. Solid-state nuclear track detectors prepared from polyallyl diglycol carbonate (PADC) resin are the most sensitive detectors for alpha radiation released by radon gas. The traditional method of preparing PADC resin involves free radical thermal polymerization, which suffers from issues such as low polymerization efficiency, long processing time, and the occurrence of defects in the product. In this study, PADC resin was efficiently prepared using a UV initiator. Starting from the polymerization mechanism, experiments were designed using a controlled variable approach, and a rational polymerization apparatus was devised. By comparing the double bond conversion rate, transparency, hardness, and yellowness index of the polymers, the optimal initiator for PADC resin, 2-hydroxy-2-methyl-1-phenyl-1-propanone (1173), was selected. The influence of irradiation intensity, irradiation time, and UV initiator dosage was investigated. The performance of the polymers, including double bond conversion rate, optical properties, dynamic mechanical properties, etching rate, and track detection efficiency, was analyzed. The experimental conditions for preparing PADC resin were optimized: irradiation intensity of 12 mW/cm2, irradiation time of 25 min, and UV initiator dosage of 5 parts. The resulting resin polymer had a double bond conversion rate of 93.2% and a track detection efficiency of 0.714.
