Engineering robust porous/dense composite hollow fiber membranes for highly efficient hydrogen separation

Tianqing Zhao,Jinkun Tan,Wanglin Zhou,Zhenbin Gu,Yongqiang Niu,Zhengkun Liu,Guangru Zhang,Wanqin Jin

BaZr 0.7 Ce 0.2 Y 0.1 O 3-δ (BZCY), a perovskite-type mixed protonic and electronic conducting oxide , holds significant potential for H 2 separation and purification as a membrane. The introduction of a porous modification layer as an exchange-active component offers a potential solution to enhance H 2 permeability. However, achieving the desired porous/dense structure presents a notable challenge for practical implementation. In this study, various methods were developed to address sintering kinetics, encompassing both chemical aspects (e.g., interlayer reactions) and physical factors (e.g., thermal expansion), for fabricating a porous BZCY modification layer on a 4-channel BZCY hollow fiber membrane. The optimal composite hollow fiber membrane , resulting from a combination of readily sintered hollow fiber and powders for constructing the porous layers , exhibits an exceptional H 2 permeation flux of 0.48 mL min −1 cm −2 at 900 °C using 50 % H 2 /N 2 as the feed gas, which represents a threefold increase compared to the performance of the bare BZCY membrane. The H 2 permeation flux stabilized at 0.52 mL min −1 cm −2 for 500 h under water vapor conditions. These findings enabled us to identify the most effective approach, unlocking the full potential of surface-modified hollow fiber membranes and advancing their capabilities in H 2 permeation applications.

Synergistic effects of anionic doping and symmetrical structure for enabling high-performance hydrogen separation in ceramic membranes

Huasheng Xiao,Yong Li,Peirong Zou,Tianxiang Chen,Xinzhi Chen

Lanthanum tungstate-based mixed protonic-electronic conducting membranes are highly valued in the realm of hydrogen separation due to their exceptional stability and CO 2 resistance. However, the low hydrogen permeability of these membranes has been a limiting factor in their broader application. This study introduces an optimized La 5.5 W 0.6 Mo 0.4 O 11.2-δ Cl 0.1 (LWMCl 0.1 ) hydrogen permeation membrane, featuring a graded porous supported symmetric structure, the fabricated membrane, optimized for improved H 2 flux, has an approximate thickness of 550 μm, achieved a remarkable hydrogen permeation flux of 1.14 mL min −1 cm −2 at 950°C, setting a new record for lanthanum tungstate-based membranes so far. The symmetric graded porous design expands the surface exchange area, thereby reducing surface exchange limitations, while the thin dense layer substantially decreases bulk diffusion resistance. This research proposes an approach to improve the permeability of dense mixed conductor ceramic membranes, purifying hydrogen, and expanding the application scope of membrane reactors. The findings contribute to the advancement of efficient hydrogen separation technologies and underscore the potential of optimized membrane structures in addressing critical energy and environmental challenges.

Ionic liquid-grafted chitosan/polyethylene glycol blended membranes for efficient separation of H2S

Hao Zhu,Ping Zhang,Zhuoheng Tu,Xingbang Hu,Youting Wu

Chitosan (CS) is a potential membrane material for acid gas separation owing to its advantages of low cost, high biocompatibility, good film-forming property, and abundant amine groups. However, due to the strong hydrogen bonding network inside bulky CS, it has poor solvent processability and high membrane crystallinity leading to slow gas permeation. Herein, via alkylating primary amine on chitosan using 1-bromohexyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide ([Brhmim]Br), water-processable ionic liquid-grafted chitosan (ICS) membrane was fabricated for H 2 S separation. Furthermore, polyethylene glycol (PEG) was introduced into ICS to improve H 2 S separation performance owing to its good plasticizing ability and highly reversible hydrogen bonding interaction with H 2 S. The successful fabrication of ICS and ICS/PEG membranes was validated using various characterizations. Notably, H 2 S/CO 2 /CH 4 (20/20/60 vol%) mixed gas permeation test shows H 2 S permeability up to ∼1100 Barrer, with desired H 2 S/CH 4 (∼24) and H 2 S/CO 2 (∼11) selectivity obtained. Quantum chemical calculations revealed that both the ionic liquid and PEG have highly reversible hydrogen bonding interaction with H 2 S, which facilitates H 2 S permeation. Overall, this work proposes a novel and green method for preparing modified chitosan membranes targeting H 2 S separation, which may provide a new insight into the design of sustainable membrane materials for natural gas desulfurization.

An effective strategy to boost hydrogen separation performance through stable mixed proton-electron conducting membrane

Jiaming Luo,Zishuo Wang,Yong Li,Jing Gao,Huimin Li,Truls Norby,Xiaoke Ku,Xinzhi Chen

Hydrogen separation and purification are key to widespread application of hydrogen energy. Hydrogen permeable membranes based on lanthanum tungstate (LWO) attract attention due to favorable mechanical strength and chemical stability. However, industrial application of LWO-based membranes has remained challenging because of modest hydrogen permeances. Here we report a novel graded porous supported symmetric (GPSS) LWO-based membrane with improved transport properties, gas exchange dynamics, and operational stability, boosting stable hydrogen flux by several times over previously reported state-of-the-art membranes.
