Recovery of palladium from solution by defective Carbon nitride and Regenerating as a hydrogenation catalysis

Yilong Zhu,Huifang Xing,Shan Ni,Ke Xu,ZhaoXiang Zhong,Liangrong Yang

The recycling of precious materials, such as palladium (Pd), was repeatedly documented as essential for a sustainable future with respect to the environment and energy production. However, high-efficiency extraction presented significant challenges. In this work, a surface hydroxyl regulation strategy was used to prepare a defective carbon nitride (CN) with a high specific surface area and hierarchical porosity through cobalt (Co)-doping. Characterization confirmed the successful synthesis of the adsorbent. The results indicated that the optimal pH for the adsorption process was 5.5, adsorption kinetics and isotherms of Pd on the adsorbent suggested that the adsorption followed a pseudo-second-order model and the Langmuir model, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity reached up to 529.1 mg·g –1 . In addition, it showed high affinity for Pd ions, the K d value was 4.1 × 10 4 ml·g –1 . After Pd adsorption, due to the presence of abundant and uniformly dispersed Pd and Co particles which further facilitated cooperative catalysis on the surface of adsorbent, As a result, the Co-CN-Pd was reused as a catalyst for p-nitrophenol hydrogenation. It achieved a turnover frequency (TOF) as high as 1032.6 h –1 , significantly surpassing other catalysts reported in the literature. Overall, this novel adsorbent presented broad application prospects in the field of Pd recovery and reuse.

Atomically dispersed iron sites from eco-friendly microbial mycelium as highly efficient hydrogenation catalyst

Junhua Kuang,Shuaishuai Zhang,Jia Yu,Yuting Zhang,Chun-Kuo Peng,Chen Zou,Jiaran Li,Li Peng,Lu Lin,Yan-Gu Lin,Pengbo Lyu,Shuliang Yang,Jian-Feng Li

Iron, one of the most abundant elements on earth and an essential element for living organisms, plays a crucial role in our daily metabolism. In the field of catalysis, the development of high-performance catalysts based on less toxic iron element is also of significant importance for green chemistry and a sustainable future. To construct Fe-based heterogeneous catalysts with excellent hydrogenation performance, precise modulation of the atomic coordination structure is a key strategy for enhancing catalytic activity. In this study, we present an in-situ coating method for applying a zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) onto the surface of fungal hyphae. The asymmetric coordination structure of Fe 1 -N 3 P 1 was precisely tailored by utilizing the phosphorus source from the fungus and the nitrogen source in the ZIFs. Detailed characterizations and density functional theory calculations revealed that the incorporation of ZIFs not only increased the specific surface area of catalysts, but also facilitated the dispersion of Fe 2 P nanoparticles into the Fe 1 -N 3 P 1 center, making the lowest reaction energy barrier and resulting in the best performance for nitrobenzene hydrogenation when compared to the Fe 2 P nanoparticles and clusters. This research introduces a novel design concept for constructing asymmetric monoatomic configuration based on the inherent characteristics of natural microorganisms and the exogenous porous coordination polymers.

Synergy in Sn-Mn oxide boosting the hydrogenation catalysis of supported Pt nanoparticles for selective conversion of levulinic acid

Yaowei Lu,Yongxing Wang,Qinghu Tang,Qiue Cao,Wenhao Fang

The synergistic effect in a bimetallic oxide usually plays a vital role in determining the behavior of supported-metal catalysts. We show the unique synergy in a Sn x Mn 1 O y oxide, which can boost the hydrogenation catalysis of supported Pt nanoparticles for selective conversion of levulinic acid (LA) to γ-valerolactone (GVL). On a series of Pt/Sn x Mn 1 O y catalysts with a similar Pt loading ( ca. 0.44 wt%) and a controlled Pt size ( ca. 2.7 nm), the intrinsic TOF presents a volcano-like dependence on Pt 0 sites and Lewis acidity, which is determined by the variable synergistic effect between MnO y and SnO y . The optimal Pt/Sn 0.8 Mn 1 O y catalyst exhibits a high i TOF of 2709 h −1 and achieves 100% selectivity to GVL at 99% conversion of LA at 120 ℃ and 2 MPa of H 2 . DFT calculations demonstrate that the incorporation of Sn can provide a lower energy barrier for the crucial elementary reactions.

In situ assembly of monodispersed Ag nanoparticles in the channels of ordered mesopolymers as a highly active and reusable hydrogenation catalyst

Xianchun Liu,Renxi Jin,Dashu Chen,Lin Chen,Shuangxi Xing,Hongzhu Xing,Yan Xing,Zhongmin Su

In this study, we report a simple in situ auto-reduction strategy for the fabrication of Ag@FDU-15 nanocomposites, in which the small sized Ag nanoparticles are monodispersed in the channels of FDU-15 ordered mesopolymers. The as-prepared Ag@FDU-15 nanocomposites were characterized by small and wide angle X-ray diffraction (XRD), nitrogen sorption, thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). TEM results show that the silver nanoparticles are uniformly dispersed with a mean diameter of 5.6 ± 0.5 nm. When used as a hydrogenation catalyst, the Ag@FDU-15 nanocomposites exhibit excellent catalytic performance and reusability for the reduction of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) in the presence of NaBH4.

Catalytic Membrane Nanoreactor with Cu–Agx Bimetallic Nanoparticles Immobilized in Membrane Pores for Enhanced Catalytic Performance

Yu Chen,Senqin Fan,Jiaojiao Chen,Lei Deng,Zeyi Xiao

A catalytic membrane nanoreactor (CMNR) with Cu–Agx (where x is the millimolar concentration of AgNO3) bimetallic catalysts immobilized in membrane pores has been fabricated via coupling flowing synthesis and replacement reaction. Surface characterization by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) gives obvious evidence of the formation of Cu–Ag bimetallic core–shell nanostructures with Ag islands deposited on the Cu core metal. An apparent high shift phenomenon for the Cu element and a low shift phenomenon for the Ag element was determined by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), indicating a close interaction with the transfer of electron density from the Cu atom to the Ag atom. The hydrogenation catalysis of p-nitrophenol (p-NP) was tested to evaluate the catalytic performance. During the catalytic process, the Cu core acts as an electron-deficient site to adsorb and activate the −NO2 group for p-NP, and the Ag shell is beneficial for enhancing active H spilling to the Cu surface and then performing hydrogenation. A volcano-shaped apparent reaction rate constant can be achieved, which rises initially with the increasing Ag content and subsequently drops with a further increase in the Ag content. The highest value of 1071 min–1 can be achieved for CMNR immobilized with Cu–Ag2 owing to the suitable adsorption activation behavior and the best hydrogen spillover behavior.

Relationship between low-temperature oxidation activity and second-stage ignition delay: Experimental insights on n-pentanol / hydrogenated catalytic biodiesel blends

Feibin Yan,Wenjun Zhong,Tamilselvan Pachiannan,Sicheng Lai,Zhixia He,Qian Wang

N -pentanol exhibits promising potential as a sustainable and eco-friendly biomass energy source. However, certain challenges such as ignition difficulty and unstable combustion exist. This study investigates the influence of low-temperature auto-ignition of n -pentanol/HCB (Hydrogenated Catalytic Biodiesel) blends on ignition and combustion characteristics and evaluates the correlation between low-temperature oxidation and second-stage ignition delay. Results show a linear positive correlation between the HCB content in n -pentanol and its low-temperature oxidation reactivity. The stronger the low-temperature oxidation activity of the blends, the shorter the second-stage ignition delay of blends. When the HCB content in blends is below 40 %, the low-temperature oxidation rate initially increases and then decreases. However, the low-temperature oxidation rate increases again when the HCB content exceeds 40 %. Moreover, the relationship between the initial CO 2 generation rate and the HCB blending ratio follows an Exp exponential function under different critical compression ratios. Beyond 43.7 % HCB, an acceleration in the high-temperature combustion rate owing to an increase in the low-temperature oxidation rate again. In addition, the minimum ignition limit of n -pentanol/HCB blends was identified with 40 % HCB blends closely resembling diesel conditions and 50 % HCB blends showing a lower ignition limit, characterized by a critical temperature and pressure of 517.3 K and 8.66 bar, respectively. Furthermore, two distinct conditions for the minimum ignition boundary region of n -pentanol/HCB blends were defined, offering practical insights. In summary, a blend with a 50 % HCB ratio provides a promising solution for the low-temperature ignition and stable combustion of n -pentanol, addressing the challenges of simultaneous use in internal combustion engines.
