Bismuth-lead oxides co-modified graphite felt as efficient catalyst for the Cr3+/Cr2+ redox reaction

Li Runze,Guo Yang,Yuan Shiling,Liu Gang,Lin Meng

Iron-chromium flow battery is considered one of the preferred technologies for large-scale energy storage facilities due to its advantages of low pollutability, less cost and high safety. However, the poor reversibility of the Cr 3+ /Cr 2+ redox reaction at the anode of iron-chromium flow batteries, the low activity and the susceptibility to hydrogen evolution reaction are the primary problems that restrict the development and application of this battery. On the basis of graphite felt electrodes, we prepared bismuth-lead oxides co-modified graphite felt electrodes via acid etching and electrodeposition method to improve the electrochemical performance in the reaction kinetics. The structural and catalytic properties of the materials were characterized and evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction spectroscopy and electrochemical methods, respectively. The results show that with the help of the interaction between Bi and Pb elements, the successfully prepared modified electrode not only improves the reversibility and reaction rate of the electrochemical redox reaction of Cr 3+ /Cr 2+ but also effectively inhibits the occurrence of hydrogen evolution reaction.

A tungsten polyoxometalate mediated aqueous redox flow battery with high open-circuit voltage up to 2 V

Li Weipeng,Xu Weizhuo,Sun Zhaopeng,Tang Linning,Xu Guohao,He Xinyue,Deng Yulin,Sun Wei,Zhou Bingjie,Song Jianfei,Liu Wei

As a promising stationary energy storage device, aqueous redox flow battery (ARFB) still faces the challenge of low open-circuit voltage, due to the limitation of the potential of water splitting (1.23 V theoretically). Herein, we present a low potential anolyte design by using Na substituted phosphotungstic acid (3Na-PW 12 ) for an aqueous redox flow battery with the high open-circuit voltage up to 2.0 V. The 3Na-PW 12 can store 5 electrons in the charging process and simultaneously capture Na + or protons from the dissociation of water, resulting in the increase of electrolyte pH to 11. Because of the high pH value, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is highly suppressed, and the 3Na-PW 12 is partially degraded into a lacunary structured PW 11 with extremely low potential down to −1.1 V (vs. SHE). After discharging, the captured protons are re-released into the solution, therefore, pH and the structure of 3Na-PW 12 are recovered. Based on the cyclic pH change and self-regulation process of 3Na-PW 12 in the charge and discharge process, the aqueous flow battery offered a high-power density of 200 mW cm −2 and 160 mW cm −2 coupled with Br 2 /Br − and I 2 /I − catholyte respectively.

Cation Vacancies Anchored Transition Metal Dopants Based on a Few-Layer Ti3C2Tx Catalyst for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution

Xiangjie Liu,Xiaomin Chen,Chunlan Huang,Sihan Sun,Ding Yuan,Yuhai Dou

This study addresses the efficiency and cost challenges of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts in the context of carbon neutrality strategies by employing a synergistic approach that combines cation vacancy anchoring and transition metal doping on two-dimensional (2D) MXenes. Using an in situ LiF/HCl etching process, the aluminum layers in Ti3AlC2were precisely removed, resulting in a few-layer Ti3C2TxMXene with an increased interlayer spacing of 12.3 Å. Doping with the transition metals Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu demonstrated that Fe@Ti3C2provided the optimal HER performance, characterized by an overpotential (η10) of 81 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a low Tafel slope of 33.03 mV dec−1, and the lowest charge transfer resistance (Rct= 5.6 Ω cm2). Mechanistic investigations revealed that Fe’s 3d6electrons induce an upward shift in the d-band center of MXene, improving hydrogen adsorption free energy and reducing lattice distortion. This research lays a solid foundation for the design of non-precious metal catalysts using MXenes and highlights future avenues in bimetallic synergy and scalability.

Facile synthesis of sheet-shaped Co2P grown on carbon cloth as a high-performance electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction

Li Kaidi,Zhang Fangfang,Wu Haoran,Wang Yina,Du Jimin,Lu Yayun,Wang Weimin,Zhao Guoyan,Kang Dae Joon

Here, we demonstrate the synthesis of sheet-shaped Co 2 P grown on carbon cloth (sheet-shaped Co 2 P-CC) through a facile route. Electrochemical measurements indicated that sheet-shaped Co 2 P-CC with a loading of 0.6 mg cm −2 Co 2 P (denoted Co 2 P-CC-0.6) exhibits exceptional electrocatalytic activity in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), with an overpotential of 94 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 80 mV decade −1 in 1 M KOH. Similarly, sheet-shaped Co 2 P-CC-0.6 was also found to be an excellent electrocatalyst for the HER in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 and in 0.5 M phosphate buffer solution (PBS), with overpotentials of 95 and 231 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , respectively. Sheet-shaped Co 2 P has a large surface area, meaning that it can provide a relatively large number of active sites on its surface, and CC is an highly conductive substrate that, when used in conjunction with Co 2 P, can enhance the conductivity of the electrocatalyst. These outstanding results show that sheet-shaped Co 2 P-CC could be an excellent candidate for a highly efficient electrocatalyst.

A hybrid electrolyte with water-poor solvation structure for high-performance zinc-bromine battery

Zhanxuan Zhang,Kunchi Xie,Menglei Yao,Haipeng You,Jiaqing Jiang,Yiting Lin,Hao Jiang,Zhen Song,Long Chen,Chunzhong Li

Due to the low cost and high safety, aqueous non-flow zinc-bromine battery have shown great potential. However, one of the difficulties hindering its practical application is the severe hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) and dendrites growth on zinc anodes. To address these issues, we propose a hybrid high concentrated electrolyte consisting of 7.5 M NaBr and 0.25 M ZnBr 2 with a nicotinamide (NAM) additive. The high concentration of bromide ions and NAM molecules demonstrate good ability to reconstruct the solvation structure of zinc ions, forming a water-poor solvation structure of [ZnBr 4.4 NAM 0.5 (H 2 O) 1.2 ] 2− in aqueous solution, which significantly retard the HER. Additionally, NAM adsorbs on the Zn anode surface to induce homogeneous Zn 2+ deposition, inhibit the dendrites growing. As a result, the Zn anode using the hybrid electrolyte achieved stable cycling over 2000 cycles with a high Coulombic efficiency (CE) of 99.8 %. Furthermore, the static Zn//Br 2 battery demonstrated a long cycling lifespan over 35,000 cycles with a capacity retention of 98 % at a low N/P ratio of 5. The energy density of this cell reaches 85.1 Wh kg −1 and the power density reaches 40800 W kg −1 . This work has provided new ideas for the optimization of electrolytes for zinc-based energy storage devices.

Inserted-B atoms modulating electronic structure of Pt enhancing hydrogen evolution under Universal-pH

Haoran Jiang,Yong Xiao,Zhirang Liu,Zichen Wang,Bojian Wei,Qiliang Wei,Niancai Cheng

The development of high-performance electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in different pH conditions   is pivotal in producing green hydrogen, but remains challenging. Herein, we regulate the p-d orbitals hybridization between B and Pt for effective and durable HER at all pH ranges by controlling the inserted B atom. Consequently, the optimized B-doped Pt catalysts with 20 at.% B content (Pt80B20/C) has the highest HER performance, with only 7 mV overpotential in acidic conditions, 37 mV in alkaline media, and 47 mV in neutral media, more remarkably, have negligible attenuation during electrolysis up to 100 h, which is superior to commercial Pt/C catalysts. Theoretical calculations revealed that by inserting appropriate B atoms in the interstitial vacancies of Pt, the electronic structure of Pt is suitable for providing appropriate hydrogen intermediates (H*) adsorption/desorption strength, resulting in superior acid HER electrocatalyst performance. Besides, a strong electronic interaction existed between Pt and inserted-B atoms leaving Pt sites in an electron deficiency state, which facilitates the bond cleavage of the H-OH of H 2 O, hence accelerating water dissociation and promoting neutral/alkaline HER dynamics.

An Ionic Liquid Supramolecular Gel Electrolyte with Unique Wide Operating Temperature Range Properties for Zinc-Ion Batteries

Hui Li,Changmiao Huang,Zixuan Teng,Yushu Luo,Chaocan Zhang,Lili Wu,Wenchao Huang,Tingting Zhao,Lijie Dong,Wanyu Chen

Zinc-ion batteries are promising candidates for large-scale energy storage. The side reactions of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and zinc dendrite growth are major challenges for developing high-performance zinc-ion batteries. In this paper, a supramolecular gel electrolyte (BLO-ILZE) was self-assembled in an ionic liquid (EMIMBF4) with zinc tetrafluoroborate (Zn(BF4)2) on the separator in situ to obtain a gel electrolyte used in zinc-ion batteries. BLO-ILZE is demonstrated to significantly enhance conductivity over a broad temperature range between −70 and 100 °C. Interestingly, through testing and fitting, it is found that the supramolecular gel electrolyte satisfies the liquid state law over a wide temperature range, and even achieves high conductivity (2.12 mS cm−1) at −40 °C. It is equivalent to the conductivity of aqueous zinc-ion batteries (ZnSO4/H2O) at −10 °C, which is 2.33 mS cm−1. Moreover, the supramolecular gel electrolyte can effectively inhibit the HER, thus exhibiting a longer lifetime in Zn/Zn cells for 3470 h at 1 mA cm−2compared to the aqueous zinc-ion batteries with the Zn(BF4)2aqueous electrolyte (400 h at 1 mA cm−2). The assembled V2O5/BLO-ILZE/Zn full cells also showed cycling performance, with 5000 cycles at 0.5 mA g−1at room temperature, a capacity of 98%, and a coulombic efficiency of about 100%.

N-S Co-Doped WC Nanoparticles Show High Catalytic Activity in Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Zhaobin Lu,Baoxin Wang,Shengtao Li,Feiyan Pan,Xuewei Zhu,Xiaofeng Wei

In the “dual carbon” objective, the preparation of non-precious metal catalysts with low cost and high activity is essential for the study of hydrogen evolution reactions (HERs). This study employed biomass pomelo peel powder as the carbon source and ammonium metatungstate (AMT) as the tungsten source and, through a facile one-step method in molten salt, fabricated a biomass carbon-based nanocatalyst featuring carbon flakes adorned with tungsten carbide (WC) nanoparticles. Dicyandiamide and cysteine were introduced as nitrogen and sulfur sources, respectively, to explore the impacts of N-S elemental doping on the structure, composition, and HER performance of the WC/C catalyst. The experimental results showed that N-S doping changed the electronic structure of WC and increased the electrochemically active surface area, resulting in a significant increase in the HER activity of WC/C@N-S catalysts. The WC/C@N-S catalyst was evaluated with hydrogen evolution performance in a 0.5 mol/L H2SO4solution. When the cathodic current density reached 10 mA/cm2, the overpotential was 158 mV, and the Tafel slope was 68 mV/dec, underscoring its excellent HER performance. The outcomes offer novel insights into the high-value utilization of agricultural biomass resources, and pave the way for the development of cost-effective, innovative hydrogen evolution catalysts.

A novel three-dimensional hierarchical porous lead-carbon composite prepared from corn stover for high-performance lead-carbon batteries

Meng Wang,Qiang Yu,Shuting Li,Zhen Chen,Wei Zhu,Lei Han,Huixi Li,Lian Ren,Linxia Li,Xia Lu,Jiali Yuan,Shutong Li,Yize Wu

In this work, a novel three-dimensional(3D) hierarchical porous lead-carbon composite (Nano-PbO@3DCSHPAC) derived from corn stover biomass was prepared by chemical deposition coupled with pyrolysis to alleviate the problems associated with the high occurrence of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and irreversible sulfation of the negative electrode under a high-rate partial state of charge (HRPSoC). As an additive of negative electrode in lead-carbon battery . PbO, evenly distributed on the Nano-PbO@3DCSHPAC composite, effectively inhibits the HER, acting as a nucleus for the active substance Pb, refining the grains of sponge Pb, and maintaining the high electrochemical active area of the electrode. The Nano-PbO@3DCSHPAC composite with a high specific surface area and porosity possesses good ion channels, provides an ion reservoir, and effectively inhibits irreversible sulfation. As a result, the initial discharge capacity of the battery with Nano-PbO@3DCSHPAC (164 mAh·g -1 ) is greater than that of the blank battery (109 mAh·g -1 ). The cycling life of the Nano-PbO@3DCSHPAC battery (10120 cycles) is 9.4 times that of a blank battery (1073 cycles). Our work provides insights into how to regulate the specific surface area and porosity of lead-carbon additives and makes full use of biomass straw to provide new ideas for solving the environmental problems caused by straw incineration . It is the embodiment of the circular economy.

One-Pot Synthesis of CuS/Co3S4@MWCNT Composite as a High-Efficiency Catalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Xinyuan Zhang,Meng Sun,Haibo Guo,Ming Su

Pursuing cost-effective non-precious metal electrocatalysts is a key challenge in the field of sustainable energy conversion. Transition metal dichalcogenides, known for their unique electronic structure, demonstrate superior electrocatalytic capabilities for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), yet their effectiveness is still lacking. In the present study, a CuS/Co3S4@MWCNT composite was fabricated via single-step hydrothermal synthesis for HER applications. This catalyst exploited the synergistic effects between CuS and Co3S4to increase edge site functionalities and metallic conductivity, thereby resulting in high catalytical activity within the material. Furthermore, the incorporation of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) into the composite effectively enhanced electron transfer kinetics throughout the HER process. Notably, thiourea serves a dual function in this synthesis, acting both as a reducing agent and as a sulfur source for the formation of metal sulfides. When evaluated in a 1 M KOH alkaline electrolyte, the synthesized nanocomposite exhibited a minimal overpotential of 300 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA/cm2, and a Tafel slope of merely 76.2 mV/dec, indicative of its good HER catalytic activity. These findings underscore the composite’s potential for application in hydrogen production technologies.

Regulating Zn2+ Solvation Shell Through Charge-Concentrated Anions for High Zn Plating/Stripping Coulombic Efficiency

Diantao Li,Tianjiang Sun,Tao Ma,Weijia Zhang,Qiong Sun,Min Cheng,Zhengtai Zha,Weiwei Xie,Zhanliang Tao

The plating/stripping efficiency of zinc (Zn) is directly related to the efficiency of zinc utilization and cycle stability of the battery, which is affected by factors such as the solvated water-related hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), Zn corrosion, and dendrite formation. Therefore, creating a weak solvate shell for Zn 2+ with reduced solvated water molecules can promote stable deposition and stripping of the zinc anode. In this work, a novel approach using the concentrated charge effect of anions is proposed to remove the solvated water and improve the efficiency of Zn plating/stripping. 3 mol kg −1 (3 m ) ZnCl 2 , Zn(ClO 4 ) 2 , and Zn(BF 4 ) 2 electrolytes are used as the representatives to investigate how anions regulate the solvent shell of zinc ion to achieve high Zn plating/stripping Coulombic efficiency (CE). Computational results show that Cl − has a more concentrated charge compared to ClO 4 − and BF 4 − , indicating a stronger interaction with Zn 2+ . This concentrated charge effect reduces the number of water molecules in Zn 2+ solvation structures. Benefiting from weak solvent structure, the average coulomb efficiency, and cycling stability of the Zn─Cu asymmetric cell using ZnCl 2 electrolyte is better. Additionally, the Zn-NaV 3 O 8 full cell of the ZnCl 2 electrolyte exhibits good electrochemical performance.
