Quasi-Monolayer Ag2Se/1T-WSe2 Nanosheets for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution and Charge Storage

Mairman Muska,Ye Wang,Jing Yang,Lin Ma,Qian Xu,Honghe Ding,Junfa Zhu,Qing Yang

With a dual strategy of phase-interface engineering, monolayer (1L)–1T-WSe2 integrated with Ag2Se nanoparticles (NPs) is in situ fabricated as quasi-monolayer Ag2Se/1L–1T-WSe2 hybrid nanosheets via a one-pot oleylamine-colloidal reaction. The Ag2Se NPs direct the growth of 1L–1T-WSe2 nanosheets forming the quasi-monolayer hybrid nanosheets by lodging in the interlayer spaces of WSe2 while the Ag2Se NPs being in a superionic conductor state diffuse rapidly and prevent the growth of piled-up multilayered WSe2 nanosheets. Due to the formation of quasi-monolayer Ag2Se/1L–1T-WSe2 nanosheets, many more side edges are exposed. Intensive studies illustrated that the quasi-monolayer Ag2Se/1L–1T-WSe2 hybrid nanosheets provide increased surface area and active sites as compared with isolated Ag2Se and WSe2. The hybrid nanosheets demonstrated excellent catalytic properties for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with overpotentials (η10) of 163 and 140 mV in acidic and basic conditions, respectively, and an outstanding alkaline supercapacitance of 1674 F g–1 at 1 A g–1. Meanwhile, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) determinations revealed that the quasi-monolayer hybrid nanosheets with enhanced electronic modulation could promote H+ adsorption/H2 desorption and accelerate the transport and separation of charge on the interface of heterostructured catalyst along with the electrode surface so as to exhibit outstanding electrochemical performances for HER and pseudocapacitance.

Shuai Wang,Jia Wang,Ping Li,Zexing Wu,Xien Liu

Efficient electrocatalyst plays a significant role on the development of hydrogen energy. In this work, an N,P-codoped carbon layer coupled with MoP nanoparticles (MoP/NPCs) was prepared through a facile high-temperature pyrolysis treatment. The obtained MoP/NPCs presented efficient activity for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), with low onset potential of 90 mV, and a small Tafel slope (71 mV dec−1), as well as extraordinary stability in acidic electrolyte. This work provides a new facile strategy for the design and synthesis of sustainable and effective molybdenum-based electrocatalysts as alternatives to non-Pt catalysts for HER.Keywords:electrocatalysts;hydrogen evolution reaction;carbon layer;molybdenum phosphide

Template synthesis of CoSe2/Co3Se4 nanotubes: tuning of their crystal structures for photovoltaics and hydrogen evolution in alkaline medium

Hongmei Li,Xing Qian,Changli Zhu,Xiancai Jiang,Li Shao,Linxi Hou

Tubular-structured nanomaterials with tailorable crystal structures and shell architectures whose properties can be tuned without changing their chemical compositions are attractive in electrochemical energy conversion and storage fields. Herein, we report the fabrication of tubular-structured orthorhombic CoSe2 (o-CoSe2) and cubic CoSe2 (c-CoSe2) by calcining monoclinic Co3Se4 nanotubes (Co3Se4 NTs) prepared by a facile precursor transformation method. Benefiting from advantageous structural features, including functional shells and well-defined interior voids, the tubular-structured o-CoSe2 showed a high power conversion efficiency of 9.34% as a counter electrode catalyst for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), superior to that of a Pt counter electrode (8.15%), under AM 1.5 G irradiation. In addition, the o-CoSe2 nanotubes also demonstrated excellent electrocatalytic activity in terms of low onset overpotential (∼54 mV) and small Tafel slope (∼65.9 mV per decade) as a hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst in alkaline medium. Hence, this work provides a promising strategy to selectively design and synthesize highly active electrocatalysts for energy conversion.

Low-cost and highly efficient CoMoS4/NiMoS4-based electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reactions over a wide pH range

Li Shao,Xing Qian,Xiaoying Wang,Hongmei Li,Rucai Yan,Linxi Hou

Highly efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts are essential for producing hydrogen through water electrolysis. Here ternary compounds CoMoS 4 and NiMoS 4 were synthesized by a one-step reaction, and further CoMoS 4 -H and NiMoS 4 -H were obtained by heating the above two samples under Ar atmosphere. The above four materials both show uniformly small irregular nanoparticles. Each element of the four materials exhibits semblable valence without distinct difference of which S was −2, Mo was +6, Ni and Co were +2. We firstly use the above ternary materials as advanced electrocatalysts for HER over a wide pH range, of which CoMoS 4 -H displays the best performance with a low onset overpotential at 8   mV in 1.0   M KOH and 83   mV in 0.5   M H 2 SO 4 . NiMoS 4 -H also shows excellent performance with a low onset overpotential at 26   mV in 1.0   M KOH and 160   mV in 0.5   M H 2 SO 4 . In 1   M phosphate buffer solution, CoMoS 4 -H and NiMoS 4 -H exhibit onset overpotential at overpotential of 122   mV and 152   mV, respectively. These results indicate that the combination of earth-abundant sulfur, cobalt (or nickel) and molybdenum elements can provide highly active electrocatalysts for HER over a wide pH range.

Activating the hydrogen evolution activity of Pt electrode via synergistic interaction with NiS2

Ke Li,Jun Xu,Chan Chen,Zhizhog Xie,Dan Liu,Deyu Qu,Haolin Tang,Qiang Wei,Qibo Deng,Junsheng Li,Ning Hu

Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is a green approach to produce high-quality hydrogen fuel . Developing efficient electrocatalyst is the key to realize cost-effective HER. Pt is the state-of-the-art HER catalyst so far. However, the use of Pt for HER is limited by its high cost. Thus, it is essential to lower down the usage of Pt in the electrocatalyst by improving the intrinsic activity of Pt. In this work, we propose to achieve this goal by introducing synergistic interaction between Pt and substrate material (NiS 2 ). The favorable synergy interaction can modify the d band structure of Pt (1   1   1) facet and modulate the hydrogen adsorption on Pt (1   1   1), which enhances the intrinsic electrocatalytic activity of Pt. The effectiveness of this strategy is demonstrated with both experimental and theoretical investigations.

In-situ construct Ni2P/Ni5P4 heterostructured electrocatalyst through controllable Ni2P phase transition for enhanced HER performance

Linyin Huang,Xinyue Wei,Yuan Yu,Dongfeng Sun,Yanning Qu,Jianlong Wen,Xiaoya Yuan,Qingmei Su,Fangyou Meng,Gaohui Du,Youqing Wang,Bingshe Xu,Kai Wang

In NiP-based catalysts, although Ni 2 P and Ni 5 P 4 have relatively high catalytic activity, the catalytic performance of single-phase Ni 2 P or Ni 5 P 4 is still far from that of noble metal catalysts. The dual-phase heterojunction has better catalytic performance than single-phase materials due to its faster interface charge transfer rate and more active sites. The Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 @CC heterostructural catalyst with oriented porous nanosheet arrays grown on carbon cloth (CC), was in-situ constructed through the controllable phase transition of Ni 2 P. By modulating the amount of P source (P-dependent) or the phosphating reaction time (Time-dependent), the degree of the Ni 2 P phase transition could be modulated, thus obtaining the Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 @CC heterostructural catalyst with the required component ratio of Ni 2 P and Ni 5 P 4 . When the ratio of Ni 2 P and Ni 5 P 4 was 15.7:84.3, the Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 @CC catalyst had the best catalytic performance. Its hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) overpotentials were only 139 and 87 mV overpotentials reaching −10 mA/cm 2 in 1 mol/L KOH and 0.5 mol/L H 2 SO 4 , respectively, which was much lower than that of the single-phase Ni 2 P@CC (base: 278 mV; acid: 123 mV) and Ni 5 P 4 @CC (base: 166 mV; acid: 106 mV) catalysts. Specially, in acidic electrolyte, HER overpotential at a higher current density of −100 mA/cm 2 of the Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 @CC catalyst was 270 mV, which was even lower than that of the Pt/C catalyst (328 mV), indicating that the Ni 2 P/Ni 5 P 4 @CC heterostructural catalysts had promising prospects for commercial applications. The mechanism of catalytic performance enhancement was investigated by the density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

An efficient hydrogen evolution catalyst constructed using Pt-modified Ni3S2/MoS2 with optimized kinetics across the full pH range

Maoyuan Li,Zhongrui Yu,Zulin Sun,Yuchen Liu,Simiao Sha,Jiancheng Li,Riyue Ge,Liming Dai,Bin Liu,Qingqiao Fu,Wenxian Li

Electrocatalyst materials play a crucial role in determining the efficiency of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), directly influencing the overall effectiveness of energy conversion technologies. Ni3S2/MoS2 heterostructures hold substantial promise as bifunctional catalysts, owing to their synergistic electronic characteristics and plentiful active sites. However, their catalytic efficacy is impeded by the relatively elevated chemisorption energy of hydrogen-containing intermediates, which constrains their functionality in different pH environments. In order to mitigate this limitation, trace amounts of Pt are introduced into the heterostructure, intending to enhance electronic transport and refining chemisorption energies, thereby facilitating significant enhancements in both HER and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activities over a wide pH range. It is revealed that the Pt-modified catalyst achieves exceptional HER performance, requiring merely 64 mV and 83 mV overpotentials to attain a current density of 100 mA cm−2 in acidic and alkaline media, respectively. Furthermore, theoretical simulations corroborate that Pt modification optimizes local electronic configurations and augments electronic transfer, contributing to its superior catalytic performance. This investigation underscores the pivotal role of Pt modification in propelling the practical application of Ni3S2/MoS2 heterostructures as highly efficient and pH-universal bifunctional catalysts.

Electroreduction-driven distorted nanotwins activate pure Cu for efficient hydrogen evolution

Li Zhe,Wang Yueshuai,Liu Hui,Feng Yi,Du Xiwen,Xie Zhiheng,Zhou Jihan,Liu Yang,Song Yun,Wang Fei,Sui Manling,Lu Yue,Fang Fang,Sun Dalin

Precious metals such as Pt are favoured as catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to their excellent catalytic activity. However, the scarcity and high cost of precious metals have prompted researchers to explore cheaper alternatives such as Cu. Nevertheless, Cu shows poor catalytic performance due to weak binding with intermediates. Here the catalytic activity of pure Cu is activated via electroreduction-driven modification of the local structure, achieving a HER catalytic performance superior to commercial Pt/C catalysts for working current densities greater than 100 mA cm −2 in acid electrolyte. Activation involved two steps. First, polycrystalline Cu 2 O nanoparticles were prepared via pulsed laser ablation, resulting in grain boundaries within the Cu 2 O particles as observed using electron microscopy. Next, the Cu 2 O particles were electroreduced to pure Cu, inducing the formation of distorted nanotwins and edge dislocations. These local structures induce high lattice strain and decrease the Cu coordination number, enhancing the interaction between Cu and intermediates—as calculated using density functional theory—leading to the excellent catalytic activity and durability of the catalyst. Our observations show that low-cost pure Cu can be a promising HER catalyst for large-scale industrial applications.

3D printed CuFe2O4 electrode with dominant facet (111) for boosting hydrogen evolution performance

Yiqing Luo,Jiongliang Yuan,Yuning Su,Lingjia Ma,Zhaotao Liu,Kunye Zhu,Zefeng Feng,Huihua Niu,Shuaishuai Xiao,Qiang Ren,Donglin Song,Xinlu Xiong

The utilization of hydrogen energy is an important way to low carbon economy, and the development of active electrodes is the most critical step for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction. With the addition of KNO 3 as a capping agent, the exposed crystal facet of CuFe 2 O 4 is regulated, and the crystal facet (111) becomes dominant. Compared to CuFe 2 O 4 (3 1 1), CuFe 2 O 4 (111) exhibits low barrier of water dissociation and suitable *H binding strength, resulting in high intrinsic activity. Furthermore, the 3D printed electrodes show more excellent performance. At 3D printed CuFe 2 O 4 (111) electrode, the overpotential is only 152 mV (vs. reversible hydrogen electrode) at 100 mA cm −2 , and Tafel slope is as low as 33 mV dec -1 . In addition, 3D printed CuFe 2 O 4 (111) electrodes shows high stability. The superior performance of 3D printed CuFe 2 O 4 (111) electrodes originates from high intrinsic activity and more exposed active sites. This study provides a new path for the development of efficient, stable and inexpensive monolithic catalyst electrodes for alkaline hydrogen evolution.

Super-stable SnO2/MoS2 enhanced the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution in acidic environments

Kun Huang,Lan Yang,Yihong Gao,Shikuo Li,Hui Zhang,Fangzhi Huang

For electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution in acidic environments, the stability of catalysts has always been a significant factor restricting development. Here, we prepared a superstable SnO2/MoS2 coupled nanosheet array on carbon cloth (CC@SnO2/MoS2), exhibiting an overpotential of 166 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2. According to the results of various tests and theoretical calculations, it is shown that the establishment of SnO2/MoS2 interface engineering is to accelerate the electron transmission on the heterogeneous interface and S defects on the edge of MoS2, and finally improve the conductivity and catalytic activity of the catalyst. More importantly, the formation of an SnO2 interface layer during in situ transformation improves the stability and hydrophilicity of the material surface. We have proposed a strategy for engineering an interface with fast electron transport and proton adsorption, providing some new ideas for the design of HER catalysts in acid electrolytes.

Photoinduced self-assembled heterostructures of surface charge-controlled metal nucleation on supports for stable and enhanced electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction activity

Yidan Liu,Zixiang Zhou,Xu Ren,Ting Li,Haocheng Wu,Qian Li,Rongrong Jia,Liyi Shi,Wenlong Zhou,Lei Huang

The synergistic effect of bimetallic heterostructures holds great importance in enhancing electrochemical performance. However, a significant challenge still remains in achieving controlled reduction pathways for heterostructured nanocrystals on supports without surfactants and comprehending the influence of structure-activity relationship on electrocatalytic performance. Herein, we have successfully controlled the surface charge of each component to precisely manipulate the nucleation sites of metal nanocrystals, achieving the highly efficient self-assembly of multiple bimetallic heterostructure nanocrystals on support through photoinduced electron transfer. As a proof-of-concept, the supported Pd@Pt heterostructure nanocrystal can be directly used and required low overpotentials of only 31 mV to achieve 10 mA cm −2 catalytic current density with a small Tafel slope of 21.3 mV·dec −1 in hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), exhibiting more than twice mass activity and superior electrocatalytic stability compared to the separately grown nanocrystals. Supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, it is validated that the supported bimetallic heterostructure is crucial for achieving enhanced and durable HER activity. Additionally, it is possible to effectively control and transform the supported combined models and corresponding electrocatalytic indicators by adjusting the zeta potential. This knowledge serves as insights for the supported heterostructure nanocrystals design and synthesis to enhance the activity in various electrocatalytic applications.

Regulating the electronic structure of Pt SAs-Ni2P for enhanced hydrogen evolution reaction

Yushun Wang,Xinzheng Zhang,Yuquan Yang,Huichao Wang,Woon-Ming Lau,Chenjing Wang,Zhongheng Fu,Dawei Pang,Qian Wang,Jinlong Zheng

The single atom catalysts (SACs) show immense promise as catalytic materials. By doping the single atoms (SAs) of precious metals onto substrates, the atomic utilization of these metals can be maximized, thereby reducing catalyst costs. The electronic structure of precious metal SAs is significantly influenced by compositions of doped substrates. Therefore, optimizing the electronic structure through appropriate doping of substrates can further enhance catalytic activity. Here, Pt single atoms (Pt SAs) are doped onto transition metal sulfide substrate NiS 2 (Pt SAs-NiS 2 ) and phosphide substrate Ni 2 P (Pt SAs-Ni 2 P) to design and prepare catalysts. Compared to the Pt SAs-NiS 2 catalyst, the Pt SAs-Ni 2 P catalyst exhibits better hydrogen evolution catalytic performance and stability. Under 1 M KOH conditions, the hydrogen evolution mass activity current density of the Pt SAs-Ni 2 P catalyst reaches 0.225 A mg Pt –1 at 50 mV, which is 33 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C catalysts. It requires only 44.9 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . In contrast, for the Pt SAs-NiS 2 catalyst, the hydrogen evolution mass activity current density is 0.178 A mg Pt –1 , requiring 77.8 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . Theoretical calculations indicate that in Pt SAs-Ni 2 P, the interaction between Pt SAs and the Ni 2 P substrate causes the Pt d-band center to shift downward, enhancing the H 2 O desorption and providing optimal H binding sites. Additionally, the hollow octahedral morphology of Ni 2 P provides a larger surface area, exposing more reactive sites and improving reaction kinetics. This study presents an effective pathway for preparing high-performance hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts by selecting appropriate doped substrates to control the electronic structure of Pt SAs.
