The direct conversion of methane to value-added chemicals at ambient conditions is a long-awaited perspective, and the electrocatalytic methane oxidation reaction (CH4OR) offers the potential of utilizing abundant natural gas and renewable energy sources. However, due to the competition of water oxidation and the overoxidation of methane, CH4OR has remained as a significant challenge. In this work, we developed Rh/ZnO nanosheets as an effective catalyst for electrochemical conversion of methane into ethanol. The highly dispersed rhodium nanoparticles provided surface sites for methane adsorption, and ZnO allowed presentation of abundant active oxygen species for methane activation. With a 0.6% Rh doping ratio, the Rh/ZnO nanosheets demonstrated an excellent ethanol production rate of 789 μmol·gcat–1·h–1 at 2.2 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode, corresponding to a Faradaic efficiency of 22.5% and an ethanol production selectivity of 85%, suggesting a promising means for methane utilization at ambient conditions.

Ni 1-x Cd x O-SDC composite materials are prepared and investigated as the hydrogen electrodes for reversible solid oxide cell (RSOC). XRD, SEM, XPS and Raman techniques have been used to characterize structural properties, textural and mobility of adsorbed oxygen and lattice oxygen. After reduction, Cd is incorporated into the lattice of Ni and formed Ni Cd alloy. The reduced Ni 0.9 Cd 0.1 O-SDC possesses the most oxygen vacancies , resulting in the highest catalytic activity for the electrochemical oxidation of H 2 and the electrolysis of H 2 O. The electrochemical oxidation process of H 2 on the hydrogen electrode in solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) mode is investigated with a symmetric cell under various H 2 partial pressures. The surface diffusion of adsorbed H atom on the reduced Ni 1-x Cd x O-SDC composite hydrogen electrodes is the rate-determining step (RDS) for H 2 electrochemical oxidation reaction and the reduced Ni 0.9 Cd 0.1 O-SDC shows the highest electrochemical oxidation rates. The maximum power densities ( P max ) of the cells with reduced Ni 0.9 Cd 0.1 O-SDC as hydrogen electrode is 796.2 mW cm −2 when using H 2 as the fuel at 700 °C. Furthermore, in solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) mode, the cell with reduced Ni 0.9 Cd 0.1 O-SDC as hydrogen electrode exhibits the best electrolysis performance under various H 2 O concentrations and the current densities remain stable during the test at different voltages for a total period of 10 h under 47%H 2 O + 53%H 2 O atmosphere at 700 °C.

Sr 2 FeCo 0.2 Ni 0.2 Mo 0.6 O 6-δ (SFCNM) and Sr 2 FeNi 0.4 Mo 0.6 O 6-δ (SFNM) were prepared as the hydrogen electrode materials for solid oxide cells (SOCs) and comparatively investigated by density function theory (DFT) and experiments to demonstrate the benefit of Co addition. The reduced SFCNM (R-SFCNM) and SFNM (R-SFNM) contain exsolved Fe–Co–Ni and Fe–Ni nanoparticles, respectively. DFT indicates that Fe–Co–Ni has optimized combination of the d-band center (descriptor of catalyst activity) and adsorption behavior for H 2 O, H 2 , H, and OH. The cell with SFCNM hydrogen electrode, La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Ga 0.8 Mg 0.2 O 3-δ (LSGM) electrolyte, and La 0.6 Sr 0.4 Co 0.2 Fe 0.8 O 3-δ (LSCF) oxygen electrode (Cell-SFCNM) demonstrates a higher performance than that with an SFNM hydrogen electrode (Cell-SFNM) at temperatures between 700 and 850 °C in both solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC, 3% H 2 O-97% H 2 /air) and solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC, 20% H 2 O-80% H 2 /air) modes. At 850 and 700 °C, the peak power density is 1.23 and 0.48 W·cm −2 in SOFC mode, while the current density is 1.25 and 0.37 A·cm −2 at 1.3 V in SOEC mode, respectively. The performance degradation rates at 750 °C are 0.17 mV·h −1 in SOFC and 0.15 mV·h −1 in SOEC modes within 150 h, which are improved by Co doping.

Traditionally, Ni-based cermet fuel electrodes have been extensively utilized in solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOECs) owing to their excellent conductivity and electrochemical catalytic activity. However, the development of alternative materials has gained attention due to concerns over Ni's susceptibility to carbon deposition and long-term stability issues. In the present study, we design W-doped Sr 0.9 Fe 0.67 Ti 0.3-x Co 0.03 O 3-δ (SFTCW, x = 0.01) as a novel hydrogen electrode material for SOECs. The results reveal that W doping promotes the precipitation of bimetallic Co-Fe alloy, thereby increasing the active sites within the material and preserves the original structure. In a reducing atmosphere, SFTCW demonstrates superior performance compared to SFTC in both Sc 2 O 3 stabilized ZrO 2-δ (ScSZ) and La 0.8 Sr 0.2 Ga 0.8 Mg 0.2 O 3-δ (LSGM)-electrolyte supported cells. LSGM-based cells exhibit superior performance, 5 times higher than ScSZ-based cells, achieving an electrolysis current density of ∼1000 mA cm −2 and demonstrating considerable stability for up to 122 h, indicating the potential application of SFTCW for solid oxide electrolysis cells.
