2D nanodendrites (NDs) and nanosheets (NSs) have been regarded as efficient nanocatalysts for enhancing the electrocatalytic performance due to their low coordinated sites and abundant electrocatalytic centers. Nevertheless, it remains challenging to construct advanced NDs and NSs in a single reaction system. Herein, by tuning the volume ratios of mixed solvents, the reduction and diffusion rate of Sn2+ on Pd NSs template was rationally controlled to prepare PdSn NDs and PdSn NSs. Ascribed to the open 2D nanostructure, high specific surface area, and robust synergistic effect, the as-prepared PdSn NDs and PdSn NSs exhibited distinguished electrocatalytic activities for ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) and ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR), as well as commendable electrocatalytic durability, which were far superior to the Pd NSs and commercial Pd/C. In addition, the PdSn NDs exhibited enhanced reaction kinetics because the characteristic branch structure exposed a high density of active sites. This work may provide significant guidance for preparing excellent nanocatalysts with various morphological features by simply optimizing the content of the coexisting solvents.

Graphical PdAg nanoalloys (NAs) are successfully synthesized via a facile visible-light-assisted liquid-phase method. The optimized one-dimensional (1D) PdAg NA, abundant in defects, exhibits exceptional electrochemical properties in both glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) and ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). Furthermore, this study introduces controllable strategies for defect generation in catalysts and clarifies the correlation between defect structure and catalytic efficiency. The development of Pd-based bimetallic nanoalloys (NAs) with abundant active sites for achieving highly efficient electrocatalysis in alcohol oxidation deserves continuous attention. Herein, we utilized a facile visible-light-assisted liquid-phase method involving adjusting reaction time to generate active sites, successfully synthesizing one-dimensional (1D) PdAg NAs rich in defects. The optimized 1D PdAg NA exhibits remarkable electrochemical activity, stability, and antipoisonous properties in glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) and ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR), far exceeding pure Pd and commercial Pd/C catalysts. Notably, compared to glycerol oxidation (1496 mA mg −1 Pd and 4.13 mA cm −2 ), the optimized PdAg NA demonstrated higher mass activity (2990 mA mg −1 Pd ) and specific activity (7.86 mA cm −2 ) in ethanol oxidation. In summary, this work may provide a strategy for designing low-cost electrocatalysts enriched with defects, thereby promoting the development of high-performance alcohol oxidation reactions.

The main challenges hindering the practical application of seawater electrolysis are the substantial energy input for sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and anode corrosion by chlorine oxidation reaction (COR). Here we report a simple but reliable strategy of coupling seawater electrolysis with formaldehyde oxidation reaction (FOR) to achieve energy-saving and COR-free dual hydrogen production . For the anode FOR, the onset potential is cut to near -0.2 V vs. the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) much lower than the theoretical potential of OER (1.23 V vs. RHE), and the Faradaic efficiencies of both hydrogen and high-value formate products achieve nearly 100 %. In a two-electrode electrolyzer at 100 mA cm −2 , the cell voltage of our integrated system is 1.75 V lower than that of the conventional seawater electrolysis, leading to a 66 % reduction in electricity consumption. Moreover, benefiting from the ultra-low reaction potential, the harmful COR is fundamentally avoided. This work opens up a new way to efficiently and stably convert sea resources into hydrogen fuel while also achieving chemical upgrades.

Constructing low-cost, high-catalytic-performance anode electrocatalysts is a significant challenge for methanol oxidation (MOR) and urea oxidation (UOR) reactions. Using paper templates with abundant pores to prepare thin porous metal materials helps to obtain high-performance electrode materials. The nano amorphous B-doped Ni/crystalline Ni (nanoam Ni-B/Ni) foil composite electrodes were derived from paper templates prepared by impregnation, high-temperature reduction, and electrodeposition methods. Porous Ni foils (Nip) derived thinnest rice (“Xuan”) paper, initially used for Chinese calligraphy and painting, exhibits the best performance due to its strong adsorption and wettability. Compared to direct current electrodeposition, pulse electrodeposition yields finer amorphous B-doped Ni nanoparticles with good catalytic performance. Under a current density of 100 mA·cm −2 , the nanoam Ni-B/Ni composite electrode prepared under a duty cycle of 0.5–1.0 s achieved current densities of 290.4 mA·cm −2 (MOR) and 340.4 mA·cm −2 (UOR) at 0.8 V, which are improved by 37.1% and 55.1%, respectively, compared to those of Nip. After 2000 cycles, with solution replacement, the current densities maintained 99.2% (MOR) and 81.6% (UOR) of the original values, showing excellent electrocatalytic stability. This research provided a new use for Chinese rice paper, and the prepared Nip-based electrode, with a thickness of about 60 μm and a low area quality, had a simple preparation process and good electrochemical properties, and can be used as a potential substitute for commercial Ni foam for portable or small electrochemical devices. Investigating how rare earth elements optimize the surface electronic states of noble metal-based electrocatalysts to enhance catalytic activity is of great importance, however, relevant studies on these reactions are significantly lacking. This study reports the synthesis of PdRE/C (RE = La, Nd, or Dy) catalysts and evaluated for methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR). PdLa/C exhibits superior catalytic activity, with a mass activity (MA) of 2.28 A mgPd-¹ for MOR, outperforming PdNd/C, PdDy/C, and commercial Pd/C-JM with a high stability retention of 95.6%. For EOR, PdLa/C achieves a MA of 5.67 A mgPd-¹, 31.5 times higher than Pd/C-JM. The results show that RE doping has reduced the electronic density of Pd and attenuated CO* adsorption at Pd sites, RE2O3 can improve the dispersion of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) and expose more catalytically active sites, and the optimal performance of PdLa/C is attributed to the strongest electronic synergism of Pd-La2O3. In addition, in-situ Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) shows that PdLa/C has enhanced ethanol adsorption and C-C bond cleavage and improved CO₂ selectivity.

Efficient Ni-based catalysts for small organic molecule electrooxidation are crucial yet challenging to develop. This study presents self-supported nickel-nickel Hofmann-type coordination polymer nanoplate arrays (Ni-HCP- t /NF) synthesized through an electrochemical semi-sacrificial growth strategy. By controlling the growth time of Ni-HCP- t nanoplates, we optimized the structure and electrochemical performance, with Ni-HCP-40/NF exhibiting significant bifunctional electrocatalytic activity for urea and methanol oxidation reactions (UOR and MOR), achieving a current density of 100 mA cm −2 at only 1.44 and 1.46 V (vs. RHE), respectively. Moreover, urea-water and methanol-water electrolysis systems using Ni-HCP-40/NF as the anode demonstrate reduced voltages of 1.61 and 1.64 V for urea-water and methanol-water electrolysis at 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, dramatically lower than water electrolysis (1.85 V). The superior UOR/MOR activities are attributed to the abundant and fully exposed Ni sites and efficient electron/mass transfer rate facilitated by three-dimensional nanoplate architecture.

One-dimensional (1D) Pd-based nanowire materials, characterized by high aspect ratios and exposed high-index crystal surfaces, are widely developed in the field of direct fuel cells. However, their synthesis methods are often not universal and necessitate demanding conditions, including high temperatures and metal templates, leading to resource consumption. In this study, we present a simple and universal one-step method for synthesizing PdM (Sb, Ir, and Bi) nanowire networks (NNWs) at room temperature. Leveraging their structural advantages and the synergistic effects between bimetals, PdM NNWs demonstrate exceptional electrocatalytic performance, exhibiting higher mass and specific activities as well as enhanced durability compared to Pd/C for the ethylene glycol and glycerol oxidation reactions. Notably, PdSb NNWs excelled in electrochemical tests, achieving the highest mass activities of 7.55 and 5.59 A mg −1 for the ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR) and glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR), respectively. Additionally, due to the semi-metallic properties of Sb, which can flexibly modify the chemical environment of Pd, the PdSb NNWs exhibited superior antitoxicity and a significantly lower decay of current density across three consecutive chronoamperometry (CA) tests. This research advances the synthesis of palladium-based nanostructures, providing impetus for the design of highly efficient electrocatalysts in the realm of direct alcohol fuel cells.

Methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR) can be utilized as effective alternatives to the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in overall water-splitting. Nevertheless, the development of cost-effective, highly efficient and durable electrocatalysts for MOR and UOR remains a significant challenge. Herein, the Ohmic junction (Ni-CuCoN 0.6 @CC) comprising CuCoN 0.6 nanosheets and Ni nanoparticles anchored on carbon cloth (CC) was successfully synthesized via a two-step hydrothermal process followed by pyrolysis. The Ni-CuCoN 0.6 @CC demonstrates exceptional performance in both MOR (1.334 V@10 mA cm −2 ) and UOR (1.335 V@10 mA cm −2 ), coupled with outstanding durability, maintaining 88.70 % current density for MOR and 88.92 % for UOR after a rigorous 50-h stability test. Furthermore, the Ni-CuCoN 0.6 @CC demonstrates a high selectivity for oxidizing methanol to formic acid, achieving Faraday efficiencies exceeding 90 % at various current densities in the context of MOR. The outstanding performance of Ni-CuCoN0 .6 @CC in terms of MOR and UOR either surpasses or closely approaches the levels reported in previous literature, primarily due to the synergistic effect resulting from the Ohmic junction: in this system, Ni serves as the principal active component, Co augments catalytic activity and diminishes onset potential, while Cu enhances long-term durability. Moreover, CuCoN 0.6 nanosheets effectively modulate electronic structure and optimize the morphology of Ni, leading to the exposure of numerous defects that provide a wealth of active sites for the reaction. Additionally, the exceptional hydrophilic and aerophobic surface promotes enhanced mass transfer. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that Ni-CuCoN 0.6 @CC enhances reactant adsorption and product desorption, reducing energy barriers and expediting MOR and UOR kinetics.

At present, it is still a great challenge to control the morphology and size of nanoparticles for obtaining more efficient and stable catalysts for direct fuel cell reactions. Herein, we have synthesized a series of Pd 3 Sn bimetallic catalysts with different morphologies that transitioned from nanonetwork to nanostrips and then to nanodots by altering the varieties of reducing agents and the amount of surfactant. And the formation mechanisms of nanocatalysts were also investigated. It is worth noting that Pd 3 Sn-dots, due to the unique structure, uniform dispersion and ultra-small size, exhibit excellent electrocatalytic activity for ethanol oxidation reaction and ethylene glycol oxidation reaction, which distinctly higher than the other Pd 3 Sn catalysts and commercial Pd/C catalysts. Moreover, the as-prepared Pd 3 Sn catalysts also performed greater long-term durability due to the electronic and synergistic effects. This work provides guidance on the morphology-dependent nanocrystals, which will show a great potential as anodic catalysts in direct fuel cell applications.

The catalytic efficiency of the formic acid electro-oxidation reaction (FAOR) and glycerol electro-oxidation reaction (GOR) using a Pt catalyst was substantially enhanced by adding 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) dissolved in acetonitrile solution (ACN) into the reaction solution. The dynamic structure of TCNQ(ACN) and blank ACN modified Pt catalysts, along with their impacts on the performances in FAOR and GOR were analyzed. A strong relationship was established between the performance of FAOR and GOR and the modifier concentration in the reaction solution. ACN exerted a geometric blocking effect on Pt, thereby considerably improving the direct dehydrogenation process of FAOR. Based on ACN, the performance of the dehydrogenation process of FAOR and GOR was further boosted for the surface electron-rich Pt catalyst due to modification with additional TCNQ modifier. Additionally, the resistance to CO poisoning of modified Pt catalyst was notably improved, and the onset potential decreased from 0.656 V of the unmodified Pt to 0.583 V for a specific amount of TCNQ(ACN) modified Pt catalyst. This study offers a novel perspective to optimize the catalytic performance of the catalyst.

Direct liquid fuel cells (DLFC) are regarded as attractive energy devices with their advantages of sustainability and eco-friendly operation. Pd-based materials have been recognized as ideal catalysts for anodic oxidation of DLFC. Although reasonably regulating the structure of Pd-based catalysts to achieve remarkable catalytic performance, it is not clear about the combined effects of d-band center and charge transfer, which are the crucial impactors for catalytic activity. Herein, a facile method to synthesize trimetallic PdCuIn nanoparticles (PdCuIn NPs) for ethanol and formate oxidation reactions (EOR and FOR, respectively) is reported. PdCuIn NPs exhibits bifunctional catalytic activities for both EOR and FOR, with mass activities of 16 000 and 15 500 mA mg Pd −1 , respectively, which are much better than those of commercial Pd/C catalysts. Comparing to the bimetallic nanoparticles (PdCu or PdIn NPs), additional Cu or In enhances the electron transfer and achieves a suitable d-band center, resulting in excellent performance. This work synthesizes a highly active catalyst for both EOR and FOR, but also provides facile strategy of balancing the d-band center and charge transfer for high catalytic performance.

Two-dimensional (2D) Pd-based nanostructures with a high active surface area and a large number of active sites are commonly used in alcohol oxidation research, whereas the less explored ring structure made of nanosheets with large pores is of interest. In this study, we detail the fabrication of PdCu nanorings (NRs) featuring hollow interiors and low coordinated sites using a straightforward solvothermal approach. Due to increased exposure of active sites and the synergistic effects of bimetallics, the PdCu NRs exhibited superior catalytic performance in both the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) and the ethylene glycol oxidation reaction (EGOR). The mass activities of PdCu NRs for EOR and EGOR were measured at 7.05 A/mg and 8.12 A/mg, respectively, surpassing those of commercial Pd/C. Furthermore, the PdCu NRs demonstrated enhanced catalytic stability, maintaining higher mass activity levels compared to other catalysts during stability testing. This research offers valuable insights for the development of efficient catalysts for alcohol oxidation.
