Hydrolysis of cellulose to glucose is one of the most important processes for the conversion of biomass to fuels and chemicals. Besides cellulose, lignin is the third of the main components of native lignocellulose . It is essential to understand the role of lignin in the depolymerization process of cellulose using lignocellulose as raw material. Here, the role of lignin was studied by using a lignin dimer model with a β-O-4 linkage and an organsolv lignin as the additive, respectively, for depolymerization of cellulose via oxidation-hydrolysis method. The results showed that both lignin dimer model and organsolv lignin substantially promoted the oxidation of cellulose and increased the yield of glucose. 30.01% yield of glucose was given for microcrystalline cellulose in present of 10% organsolv lignin, compared to 22.64% glucose yield for pure microcrystalline cellulose. Additionally, the mechanism of the promotion effect of lignin on the oxidation of cellulose process was proposed.

Graphical A two-step depolymerizing strategy of high-pressure CO 2 −H 2 O pretreatment and oxidation-hydrolysis is applied for selective degradation of corn straw to glucose production. As high as 32.2 % yield of glucose is achieved without additional catalyst and the active acid sites generated during the partial oxidation on glucose units of cellulose is crucial. Depolymerization of the cellulose part in lignocellulose to glucose is a significant step for lignocellulose valorization. As one of the main by-products of agricultural biomass in crop-producing filed, valorization of corn straw has attracted considerable attention. In this study, a two-step depolymerizing strategy of high-pressure CO 2 −H 2 O pretreatment and oxidation-hydrolysis was applied for selective depolymerization of the cellulose component of corn straw to glucose production. Most part of the hemicellulose component could be removed through high-pressure CO 2 −H 2 O pretreatment in the presence of low concentration of acetic acid, and then as high as 32.2 % yield of glucose was achieved in water at 170 °C for 6 h without additional catalyst. The active acid sites generated during the partial oxidation of hydroxymethyl groups to carboxyl groups on glucose units of cellulose was shown to be crucial for the efficient valorization of corn straw for glucose production.

Pure or highly concentrated ionic liquids (ILs, CIL > 40% v/v) have been widely applied for the preparation of value-added products from polysaccharides by breaking their hydrogen bonds. Reducing the dosage of ILs would benefit the establishment of a greener process. However, the effect of low-concentration ILs on the pretreatment of polysaccharides, especially water-soluble recalcitrant polysaccharides, has not been fully investigated. In this study, aqueous [Bmim]Cl (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride) with different dilution ratios was applied to treat xanthan gum (XG) and assist XG hydrolysis. Structural characterization and hydrolysate analyses showed that 1% (v/v) [Bmim]Cl could effectively break intramolecular hydrogen bonds of XG through the binding of [Bmim]+ to XG side chains, disrupting the XG conformation. Such changes increased the accessibility of XG for chemical reagents. Moreover, [Bmim]Cl could significantly increase the content of hydroxyl and superoxide radicals (from H2O2) in the reaction system. These interactions strengthened the acidic oxidative hydrolysis of XG. Notably, a low concentration of [Bmim]Cl was proved to inhibit the Maillard browning of the acidic oxidative hydrolysis system, which also contributed to XG degradation. Under hydrolysis conditions of 0.4 M HCl, 0.75% (w/v) H2O2 and 1% (v/v) [Bmim]Cl for 4 days at 80 °C, XG could be hydrolyzed into a mixture with a high dextrose equivalent value of 29.16% containing 25 types of oligosaccharides. Meanwhile, the XG hydrolysates showed good antioxidant ability and elicitor activity against soybean cotyledon. Our work should be valuable for establishing a green and economic platform for valorizing water-soluble recalcitrant polysaccharides.

Although magnesium alloys have been effectively used in industry, they have weak corrosion resistance. Herein, robust Ni-thiolate coordination polymer Mg(OH) 2 coatings were prepared by an oxidation-hydrolysis-coordination (OHC) strategy to make AZ31 magnesium alloy highly resistant to corrosion in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The OHC process includes three steps: I) oxidation of AZ31 to produce AZ31@MgO; II) hydrolysis of MgO to produce Mg(OH) 2 , cation exchange between Mg(OH) 2 and Ni(II) to produce Mg–Ni LDH; III) coordination of Ni(OH) 2 from Mg–Ni LDH by the 1,4-Benzenedithiol (BDT) ligand to produce LDH-BDT coatings. Potentiodynamic polarization, EIS, and in situ SRET in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution were used to assess the hybrid coating's anti-corrosion performance. Surprisingly, LDH-BDT coating achieves excellent corrosion inhibition performance (99.9999%) with the i corr of 1.926 × 10 −10 A cm −2 , which is six orders of magnitude lower than that of AZ31 substrate, this is due to the cooperative effect, such as the physical protection provided by thick LDH-BDT coatings and the hydrophobic properties of Ni(II)-BDT coordination polymers. This study provides fresh insight into the fabrication of Mg(OH) 2 -based coatings modified with Ni-thiolate complex to significantly improve Mg alloys' resistance to corrosion.

Production of glycolic acid from renewable resources is a significant challenge considering its extensive market and the depletion of fossil resources. This study accomplished sustainable glycolic acid production from biomass-derived saccharides using a microwave-assisted aerobic oxidation system. Various Mn-biochar catalysts were synthesized using different precursors (MnCl2 and KMnO4) and synthesis temperatures (400–850 °C). Glycolic acid yield from glucose could reach 62.8 Cmol % within 20 min at 180 °C over MnBC-VII-700 (i.e., catalyst derived from Mn(VII) precursor and synthesized at 700 °C). Mn(III) was identified as the catalytically active state by correlation with the catalytic performance. Biochar support is vital for reactant adsorption, electron transfer, and microwave absorption. Transformation from glucose to glycolic acid would experience retro-aldol and oxidation reactions, while oxidation-hydrolysis of the glycosidic bond could be achieved for one-pot oligosaccharide conversion. The yields of glycolic acid reached 43.1, 29.2, and 33.3 Cmol % within 30 min, when the substrates were cellobiose, maltose, and maltotriose, respectively. This study developed a low-cost Mn-biochar catalyst for biomass valorization. The study presents valuable mechanistic insights that can serve as a critical reference for the sustainable production of chemical building blocks in heterogeneous catalysis.
