Roles of bulk-, micron-, and nano-copper oxide (CuO) on methane production, microbial diversity, functions during thermophilic anaerobic digestion (AD) were investigated in this study. Results showed that bulk-, micron-, and nano-CuO promoted methane production by 27.8%, 47.6%. and 83.1% compared to the control group, respectively. Microbial community analysis demonstrated that different particle sizes could cause various shifts on bacteria community, while had little effect on archaeal diversity. Thereinto, bacteria belonging to phylum Firmicutes and Coprothermobacterota dominated in enhanced hydrolysis process in groups with nano-CuO and bulk-CuO, respectively, while micron-CuO had stronger promotion on the abundances of hydrolytic and fermentative bacteria belonging to families Peptostreptococcaceae, Caloramatoraceae, Erysipelotrichaceae, and Clostridiaceae, than other two CuO sizes. Metabolic pathways revealed that energy-related metabolism and material transformation in bacteria were only boosted by micron-CuO, and nano-CuO and bulk-CuO were important to methanogenic activity, stimulating energy consumption and methane metabolism, respectively.

Gas sensors based on metal/metal oxide heterostructures have shown rapid advancements due to their excellent sensing performance. However, it is difficult to control the formation of Cu/CuO nanostructure due to the easy oxidation of copper and limits its sensing application. Herein, we reported the controlled oxidation of Cu superfine particles (SPs) to form Cu/CuO nanostructure via reducing CuO with monoethanolamine, oxidized with H 2 O 2 and then in-situ annealed at 250 °C. The organic residue generated during the reducing step plays a key role in controlling the oxidation of Cu SPs to form Cu/CuO nanostructure. The nanomaterial was used to fabricate gas sensor, which presents excellent p-type sensing performance to ethanol with good selectivity and a good linear relationship in the range of 1 to 100 ppm ethanol. The response to 100 ppm ethanol can be up to 99.40 under 200 °C operating temperature, and the response under 250 °C is 30.66 with the shorter response and recovery time of 214 s and 74 s, respectively. The sensing mechanism can be explained by the adsorption–desorption model. This study provides a promising strategy for the synthesis of Cu/CuO nanostructure and open a new avenue for the development of highly sensitive ethanol sensor.

Ammonium perchlorate (AP) plays an important role in solid propellants because of its high specific impulse, high energy density and low cost. However, the excellent performance cannot conceal the many shortcomings of AP, and the problems of non-concentrated exothermic, high sensitivity and hygroscopicity still seriously impede its application in solid propellants. In this study, the solvent evaporation method is used to directionally modify the order of the cupric oxide (CuO) and fluororubber (F 2603 ) shell layers so as to obtain AP-based composites with different core-shell structures. The interlayer binding energies of the composites with different structures are explored by theoretical calculations, and it is demonstrated that AP-based composites have excellent stability. In addition, CuO with valence-band holes not only reduces the peak temperature of the high temperature decomposition of AP (440.4 to 354.5 °C), but also enhances its combustion properties by undergoing thermite reaction with Al. Furthermore, the excellent hydrophobicity and barrier properties of F 2603 greatly strengthened the hydrophobicity and mechanical properties of the AP-based composites and reduced their sensitivity. In summary, the core-shelled structures AP-based composites prepared by this strategy possessed 5-in-1 excellent properties, which provided a new idea for targeted modulation of the properties of energetic materials.

The degradation of Orange G (OG) by persulfate (PS, S 2 O 8
2− ) activated with dual catalysts that combined zero-valent iron (ZVI) and copper oxide (CuO) was investigated through batch experiments. Effects of pH, initial OG concentration, persulfate dosages, and dosages of dual catalysts on OG degradation were also examined. Higher persulfate concentration and catalysts dosages resulted in higher OG degrading rates. The OG degradation was higher under acidic conditions (pH 3.0 and 5.0) when compared to alkaline conditions. The constituents and the morphology of the catalysts coating before and after reaction were also investigated with X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Radical mechanism was studied and three radical scavengers [methanol (MA), tert-butanol (TBA), phenol] were used to determine the type of major active species taking part in the degradation of OG. It was assumed that the \({\text{SO}}_{4}^{ \cdot - }\) or \({\text{HO}} \cdot\) played a major role in the OG degradation. In conclusion, the ZVI/CuO/PS system is a good candidate for use in detoxifying water contaminants.

Cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O) and cupric oxide (CuO) are widely available and low cost raw materials. Their applications as precursors for wet chemical synthesis of metallic Cu materials are greatly limited due to their insoluble in water and most organic solvents . In this work, copper superfine particles (Cu SPs) are synthesized using Cu 2 O and CuO as precursors via a heating process in monoethanoamine (MEA). Due to the strong coordinating character, Cu 2 O and CuO can be partially dissolved in MEA. The dissolved copper source is reduced by MEA at elevated temperature with the drastically releasing of NH 3 . As the dissolved copper source is reduced, more oxide will be dissolved and finally leads to the full reduction of Cu 2 O and CuO to produce the Cu SPs. The advantage of this synthesis method is that MEA acts as both the solvent and the reducing agent. The antimicrobial properties are investigated to find that the obtained Cu SPs depress the growth of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (St. aureus) efficiently. More interesting, the composites produced via curing Cu 2 O and CuO with a small amount of MEA also exhibit excellent antimicrobial activity, indicating the MEA curing method is high-efficiency. The synthesis is low cost, high-efficiency, high atom-economy and up-scale synthesizing easily, which will benefit the wide applications of Cu SPs.

Aluminum (Al) powder is widely employed in the aerospace and defense industries, particularly for its use in explosives and as a metal fuel. Enhancing the energy release performances of Al nanopowder is an important task. The surface properties of Al nanoparticles have a significant impact on their energy release characteristics. In this work, atomic layer deposition (ALD) technology is utilized to grow nanometer-thin films of cuprous/cupric oxide (CuOx) on the surface of Al nanopowder as an oxidizer to initiate redox reactions. Structural, morphological, and chemical properties of the Al@CuOx nanocomposites are characterized by various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. The CuOx coating encapsulates the Al nanoparticles to form Al@CuOx core–shell nanocomposites, wherein the contact between Al and CuOx is significantly promoted; thus, the average fuel-oxidizer diffusion path is reduced. The thickness of the CuOx coating can be conveniently changed with nanometer-scale precision by varying the ALD cycle number, which enables flexible control over the structure of the nanocomposites. Oxidation, ignition, and combustion behaviors of Al@CuOx nanocomposites are investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and laser ignition experiments. Only a few nanometers of the CuOx surface modification layer can effectively enhance the energy release performances of Al powder, which is manifested specifically by significantly reduced ignition delay time, oxidation temperature, and remarkably increased reaction rate.

The increasing usage of two emerging contaminants (i.e., tetracycline (TET) and copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs)) has raised wide concerns about their potential impacts on the efficiency of wastewater treatment. However, the joint effects of TET and CuO NPs on activated sludge processes have rarely been documented. This study investigated the sludge characteristics and bioactivities under both individual and joint exposure to TET (1 mg/L) and CuO NPs (2 mg/L) for 60 days. The results demonstrated that both individual and joint exposures of TET and CuO NPs deteriorated the flocculation ability and dewatering of sludge by inducing non-filamentous bacteria. The joint exposure showed higher effects on sludge when compared with individual exposure. Sludge characterization analysis attributed this deterioration partly to the increased extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) secretion (especially loose-bound EPS). In addition, exposure to CuO NPs would result in an inhibition of total nitrogen removal due to impairment of the denitrification process (i.e., nitrate reductase, nitrous reductase, and electron-transfer associated enzyme), but not for TET. The inhibition of nitrogen removal could be exacerbated when simultaneously exposed to CuO NPs and TET. 16S rRNA analysis further revealed that the long-term joint exposure to TET and CuO NPs resulted in a significant decrease in microbial community richness, diversity, and associated functional bacteria abundance. The results of this study suggest that joint exposure to TET and CuO NPs results in the deterioration of sludge function efficiency.

The increasing number of applications in which copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) are used, may lead to potential release of CuO NPs into the environment. However, the impact of natural organic matters on the behavior and fate of CuO NPs in aquatic media is still largely unknown. In this study, the dissolution and aggregation of CuO NPs under the exposure of tannic acid (TA) were monitored over a period of 72 h, with a focus on assessing the contributions of solution pH changes and complexation reactions. Results showed that the total amount of Cu 2+ released from CuO NPs increased in the presence of TA especially at the highest TA concentration of 73.5 μmol/L. Although TA was observed to wrap around the CuO NPs, the aggregation of CuO NPs was not strongly influenced by TA and by the solution pH as investigated in this study. The kinetics of Cu 2+ release were fitted using the modified pseudo second-order model and the rate of dissolution was assessed to be highest at TA = 14.7 μmol/L. At pH = 4, the increased H + concentration was responsible for increased Cu 2+ release, whereas the complexation reaction between Cu 2+ and TA dominated at pH = 7. These findings suggested that the effects of TA on the dissolution of CuO NPs were a combination of solution pH change and complexation reaction, the relative fractions of which also depended on the solution pH. Additionally, the percentage of Cu 2+ released from the CuO NPs was found to increase upon decreasing concentrations of CuO NPs. Our work helps to further understand how and to which extent natural organic matters affect the behavior and fate of CuO NPs.

In this paper, mesoporous CuO with a novel architecture was synthesized through a conventional hydrothermal approach followed by a facile sintering procedure. HR-TEM analysis found that mesoporous CuO with an interconnected pore structure has exposed high-energy crystal planes of (002) and (200). Theoretical calculations indicated that the high-energy crystal planes have superior adsorption capacity for H+ions, which is critical for the excellent adsorption and remarkable photocatalytic activity of the anionic dye. The adsorption capacity of CuO to methyl orange (MO) at 0.4 g/L was approximately 30% under adsorption equilibrium conditions. We propose a state-changing mechanism to analyze the synergy and mutual restraint relation among the catalyst CuO, H+ions, dye and H2O2. According to this mechanism, the degradation rate of MO can be elevated 3.5 times only by regulating the MO ratio in three states. Keywords:mesoporous;photocatalyst;adsorption;methyl orange;CuO

The application of fluoropolymers as reactive agent in energetic materials have attracted significant interest recently. In this study, the thermal reaction properties of the aluminum nanoparticles/copper (II) oxide nanoparticles/poly(tetrafluoroethene) (Al-NPs/CuO-NPs/PTFE) nanocomposite (mass ratio of Al-NPs/CuO-NPs/PTFE = 20/60/20) were investigated by means of thermogravimetry/differential scanning calorimetry–mass spectrometry (TG/DSC–MS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses. The Al-NPs/PTFE (mass ratio of Al-NPs/PTFE = 50/50) and CuO-NPs/PTFE (mass ratio of CuO-NPs/PTFE = 75/25) nanocomposites were also prepared and tested for comparison. It is observed that PTFE is acting as both oxidizer and reducer during the thermal decomposition process of Al-NPs/CuO-NPs/PTFE nanocomposites. Before 615 °C, PTFE is oxidized by CuO-NPs and oxidizing Al-NPs, resulting mass reduction. After 615 °C, the excessive aluminum and copper (I)/copper (II) oxide will proceed the exothermic condensed phase reaction.

In this work, the high crystalline copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles were fabricated by a hydrothermal method, and their structural properties were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The sensing results show that CuO nanoparticles exhibit enhanced sensitivity and good selectivity for hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas at a low temperature. There are two working mechanisms involved in the H2S sensing based on CuO nanoparticle sensors. They are the H2S oxidation mechanism and the copper sulphide (CuS) formation mechanism, respectively. The two sensing mechanisms collectively enhance the sensor’s response in the H2S sensing process. The Cu–S bonding is stable and cannot break spontaneously at a low temperature. Therefore, the CuS formation inhibits the sensor’s recovery process. Such inhibition gradually enhances as the gas concentration increases from 0.2 ppm to 5 ppm, and it becomes weaker as the operating temperature rises from 40 °C to 250 °C. The XPS results confirmed the CuS formation phenomenon, and the micro Raman spectra demonstrated that the formation of CuS bonding and its decomposition can be effectively triggered by a thermal effect. Gas-sensing mechanism analysis supplied abundant cognition for the H2S sensing phenomena based on CuO materials.Keywords:CuO;H2S;mechanism;oxidation;CuS formation

An efficient, sensitive, simple and fast method for the simultaneous determination of oxine-copper and pyraclostrobin in citrus fruit was developed and validated. The method uses ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid as a competitive ligand to convert oxine-copper to soluble 8-hydroxyquinoline for analysis by QuEChERS and LC-MS/MS. Linear relationships were determined with correlation coefficients ranging from 0.9904 to 0.9998. The limits of detection for the analytes were 0.012–0.8 μg kg−1, and the limits of quantitation were 0.04–2.6 μg kg−1 in citrus. The average recoveries were 79.1–114.9% with relative standard deviations of less than 7.4%. The analyses of dissipation indicated that the half-lives of oxine-copper and pyraclostrobin were 1.94–3.67 and 1.79–2.48 days and the terminal residues were <0.08–8.99 and <0.02–1.90 mg kg−1, respectively. The risk quotients of oxine-copper and pyraclostrobin were 0.026–0.199 and 0.003–0.022, respectively. This risk assessment provides a reference for the safe and reasonable use of oxine-copper and pyraclostrobin and may help to establish maximum residue limits for these pesticides in China.
