Monitoring trace oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (O-PAHs) in tea infusions is crucial, as long-term consumption of O-PAHs-contaminated tea can harm health. In this work, covalent organic framework (COF) TpBD-(OH) 2 coating was fabricated for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of O-PAHs. The coating contains abundant benzene rings and hydrogen bonding sites (oxygen and nitrogen groups). Density functional theory calculations, electrostatic potential distribution and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis indicated the COF efficiently adsorbs O-PAHs via van der Waals force, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic force, size matching, and π-π interaction. Under the best SPME conditions, a method for detecting O-PAHs in tea infusions was developed using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC–MS/MS). The method possessed low limit of detection (0.5–1.0 ng L −1 ), wide linearity (2.0–1000.0 ng L −1 ) and satisfactory recoveries (82.5 %–117.5 %). Furthermore, the method was used to study the impacts of different roasting methods on O-PAHs contamination, and results showed carbon roasting posed a higher risk.

Carbon nitride photoactivity is limited by poor light utilization, rapid recombination of electron-hole ( e - -h + ) pairs, and sluggish surface/interface reaction. Surface/interface modification is a promising strategy to get rid of these restrictions. Therefore, understanding surface/interface properties is highly worth in-depth consideration to improve carbon nitride photoactivity. Herein, the nitrogen-vacancy (Nv) and oxygen substitution (Os) co-modified carbon nitride coral-like array were rationally designed by a combination of thermal calcination and hydrothermal process. Results verified Nv extended the adsorption edge toward visible light and hampered the recombination of e - -h + pairs and Os accelerated surface/interface kinetics. In consequence, the optimized photocatalyst (Nv, Os)-CN-6 can degrade 80 % of tetracycline (TC) with the pseudo-first-order kinetic constant of 0.124 min −1 , 13.8-fold higher than pristine carbon nitride. Furthermore, Nv and Os can well resist the toxic effect of interfering agents in simulated practical wastewater. Finally, Nv and Os endow (Nv, Os)-CN-6 mineralizing TC with low/non-ecology-risk intermediates evolution based on the HPLC-MS and T.E.S.T. software simulation. This study provides new insights into the rational design of carbon nitride for photodegrading TC.

The reactive oxygen species (ROS) contribute to photodegrading tetracycline (TC), which determines the overall efficiency of photocatalysts. Superoxide radical (·O 2 – ) is one of the excellent ROS for photodegrading TC by carbon nitride. However, achieving hierarchical carbon nitride with efficient, stabile, and selective production of ·O 2 – via O 2 photoreduction is a great challenge. Herein, a carbon nitride oxide nest (CNON 6 ) with carbon/nitrogen vacancies (C-v, N-v) and oxygen substitution (O-s) was prepared via tailoring surface microenvironment. The CNON 6 can photodegrade 82% of TC within 2 min under visible light, and the pseudo-first-order kinetic constant is 1.22 min −1 , 24-fold higher than that of CN. The superior photoactivity is attributed to a unique surface microenvironment, which N-v increased photoelectric conversion efficiency, C-v enhanced O 2 adsorption and O-s induced ·O 2 – evolution with ∼ 100% selectivity. Moreover, PVDF membrane-supported CNON 6 (11.33 cm 2 , 0.88 mg/cm 2 ) can completely remove TC from wastewater at a rate of 2.62 mg/h in a simulated industrial continuous flow cell. The cost-effectiveness assessment was $6.36/kg/h, implying the CNON 6 /PVDF has a bright application prospect in wastewater treatment. This work developed a surface microenvironment tailor strategy to design photocatalysts for efficient degradation of TC.

The fast recombination of electron-hole pairs results in low photoactivity, limiting carbon nitride further application in wastewater purification. To address this issue, regulation of electron configuration via optimizing surface atom properties is a promising strategy for improving the separation of electron-hole pairs. Here, sea-urchin carbon nitride (SUCN-6) with C-v and O-s mediated electronic structures were facile prepared, endowing it with a decrease in transportation resistance of charge carriers and increased activation towards oxygen. Under visible light, the SUCN-6 showed a removal efficiency of ∼ 89% towards tetracycline (TC) in 20 min and no obvious decaying after five consecutive cycles. This TC photodegradation follows a first-order kinetic, and its kinetic constant reaches 0.0908 min −1 , which is 2.35 folds higher than that of pristine carbon nitride. In addition, several crucial factors of practical wastewater purification (such as pH, TC concentration, water sources, inorganic salts, and organic matters) that might affect photoactivity were investigated. Moreover, the degradation pathways of TC and intermediates were detected by an HPLC-MS and electron spin resonance instrument, and a possible photodegradation mechanism over SUCN-6 was elucidated. This study offers new insights into the photocatalysis kinetics and photodegradation mechanism over carbon nitride for environmental remediation.

Recently, antibiotic pollution has aroused great concern due to its toxicity to living organisms and the risk of drug-resistance gene generation in the ecosystem. Carbon nitride (CN) photodegradation towards antibiotics is a promising technology for water purification. However, CN possesses a low activity due to the fast recombination of electron-hole pairs and slow reaction kinetics. Herein, we report the fabrication of nitrogen-vacancy and oxygen-substitution modified carbon nitride ((Nv, Os)–CN) with a rearranged surface via a low-temperature thermal oxidation strategy. The (Nv, Os)–CN can degrade tetracycline (TC), ciprofloxacin (CIP) and sulfadiazine (SZO) than CN under visible light irradiation efficiently. The first-order kinetic constant of (Nv, Os)–CN for TC, CIP and SZO was 2.1, 2.24 and 1.38 folds higher than those of CN, respectively. This high performance benefits from the rearranged surface atoms by forming an active surface with rich Nv and Os, thus promoting interfacial charge transfer and building robust water-(Nv, Os)–CN interface. In addition, the possible photodegraded pathways, resulting intermediates and risks of TC photodegradation were analyzed by the LC-MS and QSAR methods. Our proposed low-temperature thermal oxidation strategy to achieve surface atom rearrangement endows CN with an enhanced photoactivity toward antibiotics degradation.
