Nanoradiosensitizer-augmented cancer radiotherapy (RT) has been widely investigated, whereas the desirable nanoradiosensitizer with the characteristics of rapid clearance, effective tumor homing, and tumor hypoxia relief is still lacking. Herein, bismuth sulfide–albumin composite nanospheres followed by catalase conjugation (denoted as BSNSs-CAT) have been well constructed as a bioenvironment-responsive nanoradiosensitizer platform. The BSNSs-CAT phagocytosed by normal cells demonstrate architectural disintegration into small ones in response to physiological pH, achieving small size-favored rapid clearance, which largely mitigates the concern of long-term toxicity of BSNSs-CAT in normal tissues. More importantly, benefiting from their large size-favored enhanced permeability and retention effect, BSNSs-CAT accumulate efficiently in tumors and remain architecturally stable in a mildly acidic tumor microenvironment (TME), which strongly favors a response with H2O2 overproduced TME. As a result, the produced intratumor oxygen could overcome tumor hypoxia-associated RT resistance, together with the radiosensitization effect of bismuth, collectively enhancing RT efficacy. This research demonstrates a versatile material solution by fully exploring its bioenvironment-responsive nature, offering a new strategy for nanomedicine design and application.

Biomass to hydrogen production has been regarded as a potential approach for green hydrogen synthesis. However, carbon dioxide and bio-tar are inevitably produced, which critically restricts the refinement of biomass-derived syngas. In this study, deoxygenation-enhanced chemical looping biomass gasification (DE-CLBG) is proposed for hydrogen-rich syngas production together with CO2/H2O deoxygenation and catalytic bio-tar removal using the composite Fe/CaO as the deoxidizer. The DE-CLBG process is comprised of a deoxygenated gasification stage and a regeneration stage. During the deoxygenated gasification stage, the deoxidizer is converted under steam gasification via CaO + Fe + O2− → Ca2Fe2O5 with biochar generation; at the regeneration stage, biochar is further gasified with the achievement of deoxidizer reduction via Ca2Fe2O5 + C → CaO + Fe + COx. Experimental results show that the hydrogen production and maximum concentration upon applying 0.300 g of deoxidizer per g of biomass are 6.70 mmol and 89.61 vol%, which was increased by 287% and 27%, respectively, compared with the non-deoxygenated process. Results from the Mössbauer spectrum show that Fe0 is finally transformed into Fe3+ in the form of Ca2Fe2O5 and a small amount of Fe3O4, corresponding to the deoxygenation efficiency of 99.21%. The NMR results imply that aromatic carbon is the main form in biochar whether introducing deoxidizer or not, and deoxygenation can promote the removal of O-alkyl C.

Deep catalytic oxidation of toluene in low concentrations by ozone on a supported Pt-Ce/BEA catalyst using a facile preparation method was investigated. The catalyst was prepared using a simple grinding and calcination process, and then characterized by inductively coupled plasma elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, H 2 temperature programmed reduction, O 2 and toluene temperature programmed desorption, and ultraviolet Raman spectroscopy. The characterization results showed that Pt nanoparticles and CeO 2 intimately contacted on the surface of the catalyst, and a strong interaction occurred between them. The catalyst was employed for toluene oxidation with ozone because a strong interaction occurs between the Pt NPs and CeO 2 . We aimed to investigate the interaction between the Pt NPs and CeO 2 ; thus, we compared the three catalysts. Pt-Ce/BEA exhibited superior catalytic performance (>99% toluene conversion and >99% CO 2 selectivity at 90 °C) compared to Pt/BEA (85% toluene conversion and 63% CO 2 selectivity) and Ce/BEA (>99% toluene conversion and 59% CO 2 selectivity). The strong interaction between the Pt nanoparticles and CeO 2 increased the amount of oxygen vacancy and thus improved the ozone decomposition activity, which yielded more active oxygen species and contributed to the toluene oxidation.

Ion interference therapy (IIT) represents an intervention strategy aimed at modulating the intracellular distribution of functional ions to mitigate bacterial biofilm infections (BBI). However, bacteria tend to activate protective pathways to alleviate the damage induced by ion interference under stress conditions, substantially diminishing the long-term therapeutic efficacy of IIT. Herein, we proposed an antibiofilm strategy of the photodynamic therapy (PDT)-mediated hypoxia-enhanced copper ion interference therapy (PHCIIT). The double-layered microneedles (CuIA@SCC MN) were synthesized by integrating the novel copper-coordinated polymeric nanorods (CuIA NRs) with sodium copper chlorophyllin (SCC) on the surface of hydrogel microneedles. Compared to conventional copper ion therapy, treatment with CuIA@SCC MN resulted in the PDT-mediated hypoxic microenvironment, enhancing the copper toxicity by inhibiting the protective mechanisms of bacteria, including down-regulation of multicopper oxidase activity and the enhanced accumulation of monovalent copper ions. Furthermore, the sustained release of therapeutic copper ions from CuIA NRs within the micro-acidic biofilm would further aggravate copper overload. The efficacy of the PHCIIT strategy was validated using diabetic wounds infected with E. coli biofilm. Following PHCIIT intervention, macrophages in the infected tissues exhibited polarization towards the M2-like phenotype, which could expedite wound healing. It is believed that the PHCIIT-based strategy is highly significant in advancing conventional IIT.
