N, S co-doped carbon with embedment of FeNi alloy as bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for rechargeable Zinc-air batteries

Run Wu,Xixi Wang,Lei Ge,Zehao Zheng,Yijun Zhu,Chuan Zhou,Jinglin Yuan,Shiliang Zhu,Yuxing Gu,Wei Zhou,Zongping Shao

Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have sparked great interest, but their wide-ranging applications are limited by sluggish cathode reactions (ORR and OER). In this work, a multifunctional 3D catalyst (FeNi alloy/porous carbon) was easily fabricated by introducing Fe 3+ and Ni 2+ to modulate in-situ vapor phase grown carbon nanotubes. The as-prepared catalyst FNSNC73-800 displays abundant mesoporous, massive structural defects , and multiple active sites, which greatly facilitate the transport of oxygen species and charge transfer during the reaction. Due to the excellent ORR and OER performance, FNSNC73-800 shows a narrow voltage gap (Δ E ) of 0.76 V, which is superior to recent reports. Notably, the secondary zinc-air battery with this catalyst displays a high-peak power density (210 mW cm −2 ), while maintaining an ultra-low potential gap (0.74 V) after a long-term charge-discharge cycle of 200 h. This effort presents a facile strategy for designing economical and efficient 3D catalysts for zinc-air batteries and more energy devices.

Atomically Dispersed Fe–Co Dual Metal Sites as Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalysts for Rechargeable and Flexible Zn–Air Batteries

Yuting He,Xiaoxuan Yang,Yunsong Li,Liting Liu,Shengwu Guo,Chengyong Shu,Feng Liu,Yongning Liu,Qiang Tan,Gang Wu

Single-metal site catalysts have exhibited highly efficient electrocatalytic properties due to their unique coordination environments and adjustable local structures for reactant adsorption and electron transfer. They have been widely studied for many electrochemical reactions, including oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, it remains a significant challenge to realize high-efficiency bifunctional catalysis (ORR/OER) with single-metal-type active sites. Herein, we report atomically dispersed Fe–Co dual metal sites (FeCo–NC) derived from Fe and Co co-doped zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8s), aiming to build up multiple active sites for bifunctional ORR/OER catalysts. The atomically dispersed FeCo–NC catalyst shows excellent bifunctional catalytic activity in alkaline media for the ORR (E1/2 = 0.877 V) and the OER (Ej=10 = 1.579 V). Moreover, its outstanding stability during the ORR and the OER is comparable to noble-metal catalysts (Pt/C and RuO2). The atomic dispersion state, coordination structure, and the charge density difference of the dual metal site FeCo–NC were characterized and determined using advanced physical characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The FeCo–N6 moieties are likely the main active sites simultaneously for the ORR and the OER with improved performance relative to the traditional single Fe and Co site catalysts. We further incorporated the FeCo–NC catalyst into an air electrode for fabricating rechargeable and flexible Zn–air batteries, generating a superior power density (372 mW cm–2) and long-cycle (over 190 h) stability. This work would provide a method to design and synthesize atomically dispersed multi-metal site catalysts for advanced electrocatalysis.

CoSe2/Co nanoheteroparticles embedded in Co, N co-doped carbon nanopolyhedra/nanotubes as an efficient oxygen bifunctional electrocatalyst for Zn–air batteries

Jizhao Zou,Qi Luo,Hongliang Wu,Shiyu Liu,Tongbin Lan,Yuechao Yao,Muhammad Aurang Zeb Gul Sial,Fenglin Zhao,Qi Zhang,Xierong Zeng

Transition metal selenide-based materials have been demonstrated as promising electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), yet the actual design of a highly efficient and stable electro-catalyst based on these materials still remains a long and arduous challenge. Herein, a predesigned hybrid Zn/Co zeolitic imidazole framework was used to fabricate CoSe2/Co nanoheteroparticles embedded within hierarchically porous Co, N co-doped carbonnanopolyhedra/nanotubes (CoSe2/Co@NC-CNTs) through a facile approach involving controlled carbonization and selenization procedures. As expected, the optimized CoSe2/Co@NC-CNT-1 displayed outstanding electrocatalytic performance for the ORR and OER, with an onset potential of 0.95 V vs. RHE, a half-wave potential of 0.84 V vs. RHE for ORR, and a potential of 1.69 V vs. RHE for OER at 10 mA cm−2. It also exhibited excellent long-term stability and methanol resistance ability, which were superior to commercial IrO2 and the commercial 20 wt% Pt/C catalyst. Notably, the assembled Zn–air battery with CoSe2/Co@NC-CNT-1 showed a low charge–discharge voltage gap (0.696 V at 10 mA cm−2) and a high peak power density (100.28 mW cm−2) with long-term cycling stability. These superior performances can be ascribed to the synergistic effects of the highly active CoSe2/Co nanoheterostructure, hierarchically porous structure with a large surface area, high electrical conductivity and uniform doping of the Co and N.

Fe3Co nanoparticles embedded carbon nanotube complex as effective bifunctional electrocatalysts for rechargeable zinc-air batteries

Jifa Dong,Yaming Pang,Denise Bildan,Lu Xing,Xiaoteng Liu,Xiangqun Zhuge,Zhanhui Yuan,Yurong Ren,Dan Liu,Weiwei Lei,Kun Luo

Fe 3 Co nanoparticles have been successfully embedded within ZIF-8 derived carbon nanotube complex using a simple solvent-heated self-assembly-pyrolysis strategy, it acts as an efficient ORR/OER bifunctional electrocatalyst and showed outstanding performance of excellent catalytic activity for ORR (E 1/2  = 0.87 V at 0.1 M KOH) and OER (the overpotential at 10 mA cm −2 is 390 mV at 1 M KOH). Density functional theory (DFT) demonstrates that the introduction of iron and cobalt atoms significantly impacted on the adsorption energies of the reactive intermediates. In particular, the combination of cobalt and iron exhibited significantly enhanced ORR/OER activities, revealing an enhanced effect of synergistic interaction of FeCo site for bifunctional properties. It is used as Fe 3 Co 1 −NC in aqueous zinc-air battery (ZAB) and exhibited a high open-circuit voltage of 1.52 V, power density of 189.8 mW cm −2 , and long cycle durability of 400 h. Flexible ZABs assembled exhibit high power density (81.59 mW cm −2 ) and long cycling durability (90 h).

Encapsulation of FeCo–Co Nanoparticles in N-Doped Carbon Nanotubes as Bifunctional Catalysts for Zn-Air Battery

Xiaochao Liu,Siyuan Peng,Xiaoxiao Li,Chao Liu,Jinming Zeng,Xiaopeng Qi,Tongxiang Liang

The development of low-cost, high catalytic activity oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is the key to promoting the development of zinc-air batteries. In this paper, a simple one-step pyrolysis method was used to successfully synthesize a binary FeCo–Co/NC catalyst with FeCo and Co nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped carbon nanotubes. This structure exhibits great characteristics: it has a variety of active species (FeCo, Co, NC), and there is close combination between these active species (FeCo, Co, NC). Electrochemical studies have shown that the initial potential of FeCo–Co/NC during ORR process is 0.93 V, the half-wave potential is 0.808 V, and the limiting current density is 4.94 mA cm−2. In the OER process, at an anode current density of 10 mA cm−2, an overpotential of only 353 mV is shown; a lower Tafel slope and good durability are also observed. Moreover, the zinc-air battery in preparation can be cycled for as long as 2000 times. This provides a new method for the preparation of high-efficiency dual-function electrocatalysts for OER and ORR.

Iron doping enhances ZIF-67 based hierarchical carbon bifunction catalyst for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions

Kanjun Sun,Xiaofei Lei,Xuan Xie,Wenjuan Li,Wenbo Hou,Hui Peng,Guofu Ma

Rational design of inexpensive and durable bifunctional oxygen catalysts is essential to facilitate the commercialization of Zn-air batteries. Hence, we report an electrocatalyst with bifunctional catalytic activity, namely Fe species doped into N, S co-doped carbon encapsulated Co catalysts (e-Fe/Co@NSC). Benefiting from the hierarchical porous structure and multiple adsorption sites, the optimized e-Fe/Co@NSC-20 exhibits excellent oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance, requiring only overpotential of 282 mV to drive a current density of 10 mA cm −2 . More importantly, the e-Fe/Co@NSC-20 also exhibited excellent oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance with a half-wave potential of 0.816 V, successfully revealing that it has excellent bifunctional properties. Moreover, Zn-air battery assembled with e-Fe/Co@NSC-20 catalyst as air electrodes have high open-circuit voltage (1.472 V), power density (136 mW cm −2 ) and specific capacity (639 mAh g −1 Zn ), outperforming Pt/C + RuO 2 -based Zn-air battery. This study provides constructive assistance in the design of electrocatalysts with bifunctional properties for Zn-air battery.

Cobalt-nickel alloys supported on Ti4O7 and embedded in N, S doped carbon nanofibers as an efficient and stable bifunctional catalyst for Zn-air batteries

Heming Huang,Yangjun Luo,Li Zhang,Huijuan Zhang,Yu Wang

Transition metal catalysts for replacing noble metals have been extensively studied, but the deficiencies in intrinsic activity and stability limit their application in electrocatalysis . Here, we present CoNi alloy nanoparticles loaded on Ti 4 O 7 supports and embedded in N, S doped carbon nanofibers by electrospinning method. The prepared CoNi/Ti 4 O 7 @NS-CNFs exhibits satisfactory ORR and OER activities with a low potential gap of 0.664 V and shows a high stability over long periods of testing, which are superior to most of the transition metal catalysts reported so far. Accordingly, the Zn-air battery constructed with the prepared catalyst demonstrates a maximum power density of 165.7 mW cm −2 and a specific capacity of 788.4 mA h g Z n - 1 (1.61 and 1.14 times higher than that of Pt/C + IrO 2 , respectively). The addition of S element and corrosion-resistant Ti 4 O 7 plays a significant part in the morphology and activity of the prepared catalyst, which optimizes the distribution and electronic structure of active centers, and improves the stability of the catalyst. This effort provides a possible approach to exploring the efficient performance of the other transition metals.

Strongly Cooperative Nano-CoO/Co Active Phase in Hierarchically Porous Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Microspheres for Efficient Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalysis

Yajun Ding,Weiyi Yang,Shuang Gao,Wuzhu Sun,Caixia Sun,Qi Li

The development of highly efficient, non-noble-metal-based bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts with low cost for both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the key for the commercialization of rechargeable metal-air batteries and regenerative fuel cells. In this work, a non-noble-metal-based, hierarchically porous CoO/Co@N–C microsphere electrocatalyst with low cost and earth-abundance was created by directly reducing carbonized glucose-coated urchin-like Co3O4 microspheres through the carbon-thermal processing with NH3 reducing environment. Urchin-like Co3O4 microspheres provided a Co source for the creation of nano-CoO/Co active phase and served as the template without a removal requirement for the creation of hierarchically porous N-doped carbon microsphere matrix with abundant macropores and mesopores for efficient mass diffusion. Among its three major components, CoO played the leading role to provide both ORR and OER active sites, a porous N-doped carbon microsphere matrix mainly provided the conductive catalyst support, and the metallic Co component mainly acted as a “bridge” between CoO and graphic carbon to reduce the electron transfer resistance for the enhancement of its conductivity. Thus, their synergetic effect within its unique structure endowed a superior bifunctional performance toward both ORR and OER to the CoO/Co@N–C electrocatalyst over the commercially available Pt/C and Ir/C electrocatalysts.

Precise identification of active sites of a high bifunctional performance 3D Co/N-C catalyst in Zinc-air batteries

Rui Wang,Hongcen Yang,Niandi Lu,Shulai Lei,Dali Jia,Zhixia Wang,Zhenhua Liu,Xiaogang Wu,Hanzhen Zheng,Salamat Ali,Fei Ma,Shanglong Peng

Developing highly active and robust non-noble metal bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of dominant significance for global applications in rechargeable Metal-air Batteries. Fine-tuning the exposed active sites is a competent way to improve their performance. Herein, the NaCl template-assisted strategy for rationally designing a three-dimensional cellular structured nitrogen-doped carbon matrix integrated with nano-scaled Co species has been developed. The resulting electrocatalyst (3D Co/N-C) exhibits a positive half-wave potential of 0.84 V (vs RHE) in ORR, and a low potential of 1.56 V (vs RHE) at 10 mA cm −2 during OER process. Moreover, 3D Co/N-C based Zn-air Batteries (ZABs) exhibit excellent battery performance, especially remarkable power density. The poisoning experiments and DFT calculations identify active sites as pyridinic N and Co during ORR and OER processes, respectively. This work provides a general and easy-to-perform tactic to design bifunctional catalysts, thus helps precisely modulate effective components for ZABs.

Chitin-derived porous carbon loaded with Co, N and S with enhanced performance towards electrocatalytic oxygen reduction, oxygen evolution, and hydrogen evolution reactions

Jiaxiang Chen,Lei Qiu,Zheling Li,Guanhui Gao,Wenhua Zhong,Peixin Zhang,Yongji Gong,Libo Deng

Oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are the rate-controlling and/or energy-intensive reactions of numerous energy conversion and storage devices. It is a great challenge to attain a high catalytic efficiency with a single electrocatalyst towards these reactions simultaneously. Herein, a porous carbon was prepared by pyrolysis of chitin with the assistance of CoCl 2 and ZnCl 2 and a subsequent sulfurization process, which resulted in uniform loading of Co, N and S elements. The porous and modified carbon exhibited high catalytic performance towards ORR, OER and HER. Furthermore, the catalyst was used as air electrode to construct Zn-air batteries, which showed a power of 142 mW cm −2 and discharging and charging voltages of 1.3 V and 1.74 V at 1 mA cm −2 after 100 cycles, respectively. When used as both the anode and cathode for water splitting, the voltage to achieve a 10 mA cm −2 electrolysis current was 1.58 V which was stable over 75 h of operation. The performance enhancement is attributed to the etching effect which generates defects in both carbonaceous matrix and the Co 9 S 8 crystallites during the sulfurization , as well as the doping of S and N elements which creates multiple active sites.

Synergetic contribution of nitrogen and fluorine species in porous carbons as metal-free and bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts for zinc–air batteries

Ya-Nan Sun,Jinqin Yang,Xuesong Ding,Wenyan Ji,Aleksander Jaworski,Niklas Hedin,Bao-Hang Han

High-efficient bifunctional catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are critical to the practical application of zinc–air batteries. Herein, a comprehensive investigation on the synergetic contribution of nitrogen (N) and fluorine (F) species in porous carbon for ORR/OER catalyses is firstly conducted. The metal-free N, F co-doped porous carbon (NFPC) possesses appealing catalytic activities in zinc–air batteries and is superior to many other catalysts. Combined with the careful exploration of N and F dopants, seventeen optimized carbon cluster structures with all possible co-doping of N and F species are considered for density functional theory calculations. It can be inferred that the F doping with graphitic and pyridinic N triggers active paramagnetic centers. The co-doping of covalent F and graphitic N especially gives the lowest free energy barrier for both ORR/OER, which could account for the notable performance of NFPC catalysts in zinc–air batteries.

Carbon Encapsulated WS2 Nanocomposites Derived from ZIF-67@WS2 Core-Shell Nanoparticles and their electrocatalytic applications

Qijian Niu,Oluwafunmilola Ola,Nannan Wang,Binling Chen,Yanqiu Zhu,Yongde Xia

In this work, Co 9 S 8 and N,S co-dopped carbon encapsulated WS 2 nanocomposites (Co 9 S 8 -N,S-C@WS 2 ) has been successfully prepared through a high-temperature carbonization of the precursor ZIF-67@WS 2 nanoparticles. The obtained Co 9 S 8 -N,S-C@WS 2 nanoparticles were confirmed to have a core-shell structure and uniform element distribution by TEM and element mapping. Its crystal structure was characterized by XRD, and the high specific surface areas with porous structure was characterized by BET tests. The as-prepared Co 9 S 8 -N,S-C@WS 2 nanoparticles exhibited a better ORR/OER/HER performance than single component. In this work, a novel idea for the preparation of functional nanocomposite materials could be provided.
