Partially reduced NiO by cellulose as a highly active catalyst for oxygen evolution reaction: synergy between in situ generated Ni3+ and lattice oxygen

Xuerui Yi,Fengxiang Yin,Xiaobo He,Guoru Li

Summary Water splitting driven by renewable energy represents a sustainable way to store clean energy. However, its efficiency is limited by the kinetically sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER), calling for highly active catalysts to accelerate the reaction rate. Herein, NiO is reduced by cellulose through a hydrothermal method to obtain the highly active OER catalysts. The obtained cellulose-partially-reduced-NiO (CL-prNiO) shows a hybrid structure, composed of 3.6 wt.% face-centered cubic (fcc) Ni and 96.4 wt.% rock salt structured NiO with highly disordered interface. The CL-prNiO delivers a current density of 10 mA cm −2 with an overpotential of 288 mV, which is comparable to the commercial RuO 2 and outperforms many of the recently reported Ni-NiO based OER catalysts. As benefited from the hybrid and disordered structure, CL-prNiO shows great ability of converting Ni 2+ to Ni 3+ at a potential prior to the OER onset. The in situ generated Ni 3+ species can activate the lattice oxygen in the unreduced NiO of CL-prNiO, significantly boosting the OER activity.

Facile synthesis MnCo2O4 modifying PbO2 composite electrode with enhanced OER electrocatalytic activity for zinc electrowinning

Xuanbing Wang,Junli Wang,Wenhao Jiang,Chen Chen,Bohao Yu,Ruidong Xu

In industrial zinc electrowinning, the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) has sluggish kinetics leading to ultrahigh overpotential and energy consumption. Herein, a sandwich-like MnCo 2 O 4 modifying PbO 2 composite electrode was fabricated via chemical-bath-deposition and electrodeposition. Consequently, the synthesized PbO 2 electrode exhibits low Tafel slope of 0.17 V per decade and an operating potential of 1.68 V vs. SCE for 500 A m −2 in a simulated solution containing 150 g L −1 H 2 SO 4 and 50 g L −1 Zn 2+ . Compared with traditional Pb-0.76Ag alloy, the overpotential at 500 A m −2 decreased by 357 mV, which ascribe to the incorporation of MnCo 2 O 4 minoring crystal grain size and charge transfer resistance and enlarging active surface area. Furthermore, the composite electrode shows robust durability as long as 95 h at 15,000 A m −2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 electrolyte. Hence, this study offers a facile synthesis route to prepare composite electrodes for zinc electrowinning and provides deep insight into the relationship among modifying substances, microstructures, and electrocatalytic activity.

Chrysanthemum-like spinel nanomaterials assembled with bundled nanowires as an efficient catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction

Hongliang Yu,Jianzhi Wang,Tong Xu,Ningbo Yu,Li Wu,Siming Chen,Ning Cai,Yanan Xue,Hui Li,Faquan Yu

The fabrication of low-cost and high-performance electrocatalysts is essential for water splitting to achieve a sustainable oxygen evolution reaction. In this work, spinel oxides (CuCo2O4 and Co3O4) are mounted on nickel foam (NF) to form chrysanthemum-like hybrid crystal structures assembled from nanowires. The as-synthesized CuCo2O4–Co3O4/NF shows a high surface area, a large number of mesoporous structures and excellent charge transfer channels, which is conducive to the generation and overflow of O2. And the synergistic effect, as well as the transfer of electron density between CuCo2O4 and Co3O4, contributes to the enhancement of OER activity. As a result, CuCo2O4–Co3O4/NF exhibits excellent OER performance with an overpotential of only 267 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a low Tafel slope (114.6 mV dec−1) and excellent stability with a scarce loss of the initial catalyst activity over 24 h under alkaline conditions. This work provides an effective method to show higher catalytic activity by combining two spinel oxides.

MOF-Derived CoSe2@NiFeOOH Arrays for Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Yulong Tang,Jiangning Li,Zhiyi Lu,Yunan Wang,Kai Tao,Yichao Lin

Water electrolysis is a compelling method for the production of environmentally friendly hydrogen, minimizing carbon emissions. The electrolysis of water heavily relies on an effective and steady oxygen evolution reaction (OER) taking place at the anode. Herein, we introduce a highly promising catalyst for OER called CoSe2@NiFeOOH arrays, which are supported on nickel foam. This catalyst, referred to as CoSe2@NiFeOOH/NF, is fabricated through a two-step process involving the selenidation of a Co-based porous metal organic framework and subsequent electrochemical deposition on nickel foam. The CoSe2@NiFeOOH/NF catalyst demonstrates outstanding activity for the OER in an alkaline electrolyte. It exhibits a low overpotential (η) of 254 mV at 100 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 73 mV dec−1, and excellent high stability. The good performance of CoSe2@NiFeOOH/NF can be attributed to the combination of the high conductivity of the inner layer and the synergistic effect between CoSe2and NiFeOOH. This study offers an effective method for the fabrication of highly efficient catalysts for an OER.Keywords:oxygen evolution reaction;NiFeOOH;water electrolysis;selenidation;CoSe2

NiMOF-FeOOH/NF composites for highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction

Li Yingying,Tang Xingyue,Li Boyang,Luo Yani,Wang Yijing,Wang Xiaolian

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as promising catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water electrolysis. This study synthesizes a nickel-based MOF on a nickel foam substrate (NiMOF/NF) via a solvothermal method and fabricates NiMOF-FeOOH/NF composites through Fe electrodeposition. The NiMOF-FeOOH 600 /NF composite, prepared with a 600 s electrodeposition time, exhibits an overpotential of 320 mV at 20 mA·cm -2 and a Tafel slope of 126 mV·dec -1 . Compared to unmodified NiMOF/NF, the overpotential was reduced by 320 mV and the Tafel slope by 146 mV dec -1 . In addition, no significant performance degradation was observed during the 40 h stability test. Further results demonstrated that deposition of Fe ions significantly improved the intrinsic conductivity of NiMOF/NF, enabling more efficient charge transfer during the OER process. Additionally, the modified FeOOH surface morphology increased the number of accessible active sites and enhanced the exposure of catalytic centers. In summary, these structural and electronic modifications synergistically improve the overall catalytic performance and have guiding significance for the application of MOF to OER.

Jiahui Li,Yufen Wang,Qinyuan Yu,Xuedong Wei

A kind of MoS2@CoFe-MOF electrocatalyst was prepared on carbon cloth by a one-pot hydrothermal method. Excellent electrocatalytic activity of MoS2@CoFe-MOF is demonstrated, and the catalyst has overpotentials of 220 mV and 405 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and 50 mA cm−2, respectively. It is found that the MoS2@CoFe-MOF electrode exhibits excellent stability at the end of operation for 48 000 s, and it has the highest electrochemically active specific surface area and the lowest charge transfer resistance. This work proposes a promising approach in energy chemistry for hydrogen production by electrolysis of water using electrocatalysts composed of non precious transition metal sulfides and bimetallic MOFs.

Activating Fe activity and improving Ni activity via C3N4 substrate in alkaline oxygen evolution catalyzed by Ni-Fe phosphide

Hongyan Zhang,Tao Yang,Hao Zhou,Yikai Wang,Xuehan Yang,Wenjie Liang,Dan Wu,Pan Yuan,Tingting Yu,Maoshuai He,Wenxian Wei

Ni phosphides have recently attracted considerable attention as promising catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and are generally promoted by Fe incorporation. However, the catalytic performance of nickel phosphide still does not meet the desired expectations. Additionally, the catalytic activity of iron (Fe) is insignificant and can be disregarded. In this study, we used C 3 N 4 as a carbon substrate to modulate the 3 d electron configurations and adsorption properties of Ni and Fe. Density functional theory (DFT) analysis reveals that the catalytic performance of Ni sites can be enhanced by utilizing the C 3 N 4 substrate. Surprisingly, the Fe sites can also be activated to catalyze OER through a direct O 2 mechanism and the catalytic activity of Fe is found to surpass that of Ni. As a result, the FeNi-C 3 N 4 -P catalyst demonstrated remarkable catalytic performance for OER. It exhibited a Tafel slope of 40.4 mV dec −1 , an overpotential of 235 mV at 100 mA cm −2 , and exhibited exceptional stability. This study highlights the activation of Fe and the enhancement of Ni by utilizing nitrogen-containing carbon substrates. This strategy offers promising prospects for the development of efficient Ni/Fe-based OER catalysts.

ZIF-67 Derived Co-LDH Nanocubes for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Ying Chen,Zhangyi Lv,Jinqiu Yuan,Mingchun Bi,Yuning Liang

Graphical ZIF-67 nanocubes (ZIF-67 NCs) had been etched to produce small amounts of cross-linked Co-LDH-1 while preserving the cubic structure, which provided sufficient quantities of cobalt ions. The catalytic activity of OER has been enhanced by the cubic-structured LDH, which leads to a significantly lower overpotential in alkaline media and a calculated lower activation energy Ea. To address the substantial energy needs of the quickly evolving modern civilization, efforts are still needed to provide sustainable renewable energy sources. The electrocatalytic Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is one of the essential technologies used in the various hydrogen production techniques. ZIF-67 nanocubes (ZIF-67 NCs) were synthesized in an aqueous solution and used as sacrificial templates. Cobalt nitrate hexahydrate was added under water bath conditions, resulting in the evolution of numerous small layered layers of cobalt hydroxide. This ultimately led to the formation of multilayered, three-dimensionally crosslinked Co-LDH with a porous networked cubic morphology. Hydrolysis of Co 2+ at different concentrations produces different degrees of weak acidic environments, and the loose LDH on the cubic structure of the best catalyst, Co-LDH-1, exposes more active cobalt sites for the OER, which results in a high electrochemically active surface area, with an overpotential of 354 mV and a Tafel slope of 79.06 mV dec −1 at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 , and good stability and low activation under alkaline condition also has good stability and low activation energy. It provides us an easy and practical plan for logically creating ZIF-derived hydroxide materials, leading to the development of affordable and effective electrocatalysts.

Dynamic Investigations on CoFe2O4@Co3O4 Nano-composite as an Enhanced Electrocatalyst for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Zhang Xihuan,Jaouhari Abdelhadi El,Li Chunyue,Adnane Maimoune,Liu Wanying,Mellalou Abderrahman,Ghamouss Fouad,Lin Yuanhua

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) holds pivotal importance in sustainable energy conversion, as it forms the critical half-reaction in various electrochemical processes, including water splitting for hydrogen production and rechargeable metal-air batteries. Here, a CoFe 2 O 4 @Co 3 O 4 nano-composite was synthesized using a facile hydrothermal process and deposited onto the surface of nickel foam through electrophoresis. Characterization using XRD, Raman spectroscopy, and XPS confirmed the successful synthesis of the composite, exhibiting characteristic peaks of both Co 3 O 4 and CoFe 2 O 4 . The nano-composite exhibited a more amorphous phase than pure oxides, benefiting electrocatalytic activity. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy highlighted the composite’s morphological characteristics, showcasing a Co 3 O 4 island distribution on the CoFe 2 O 4 surface. Electrochemical evaluations revealed the superior oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of CoFe 2 O 4 @Co 3 O 4 , with low overpotentials, faster kinetics, and enhanced stability compared to pure oxides and the benchmark RuO 2 catalyst. A comprehensive analysis was carried out to investigate the dynamic behavior during electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction. This study unveils the intricate charge and electron transfer mechanisms between cobalt and iron atoms, providing insights into their collaborative role throughout the OER process. Cr doping and heterostructure-accelerated NiFe LDH reaction kinetics assist the MoS2 oxygen evolution reaction

Jun Tang,Jinzhao Huang,Sixuan Zhang,Zehui Liu,Jing Xiao

Although molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has garnered significant interest as a potential catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), its poor intrinsic activity and few marginal active spots restrict its electrocatalytic activity. Herein, we successfully constructed a catalyst via a simple hydrothermal method by forming a heterostructure of MoS2 with Cr-doped nickel–iron hydroxide (NiFe LDH) to synthesize a MoS2/NiFeCr LDH catalyst to significantly improve the OER catalytic performance. MoS2 plays a crucial function as an electron transport channel in the MoS2/NiFeCr LDH heterostructure, which increases the electron transport rate. Furthermore, a larger active surface area for NiFeCr LDH is provided by the ultrathin layered structure of MoS2, increasing the number of active sites and encouraging the OER. On the other hand, the introduction of Cr element increased the density of the catalytic center and provided additional Cr-OH active sites, which accelerated the oxygen decomposition reaction. These two factors act synergistically to improve the intrinsic structure of MoS2, increase the number of reactive sites, and dramatically enhance the OER catalytic performance. Excellent OER activity is demonstrated by the MoS2/NiFeCr LDH catalyst, which only needs an overpotential of 224 mV to obtain a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 61 mV dec−1. The catalyst also demonstrated outstanding stability, with its activity practically holding steady after 48 h of testing. This work offers novel ideas for enhancing and designing MoS2-based OER catalysts, and it provides a crucial reference for research in the field of clean energy.

An in situ formed ZIF-67 derived NiFeCo-P nano-array for accelerating the electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction

Xi Guo,Li Li,Shuo Wang,Huan Zhang,Yuzhen Kuang,Guangbin Duan,Bingqiang Cao

In situ growth of nano-arrays on substrate materials is a neoteric and efficacious catalyst design strategy, but it is still a difficulty to prepare unique nano-structured electrocatalysts with excellent activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this study, phosphidizating ternary nickel/iron/cobalt hybrid nano-arrays (NiFeCo-P) with vertically staggered growth were successfully synthesized on the surface of nickel foam (NF) through three steps: impregnation, hydrothermal reaction and phosphidizating calcination. The initial ZIF-67/NF and the derived NiFeCo-layered double hydroxide (LDH)/NF nano-array (NiFeCo-LDH/NF) template promote the charge transfer and ion diffusion between electrolyte surfaces, which is attributed to the enhancement of the interface contact area of electrolyte ions. Phosphidizated NiFeCo-LDH/NF nano-arrays (NiFeCo-P/NF) showed lower overpotential of 251 and 278 mV at 50 mA cm−2 and 100 mA cm−2, respectively. The Tafel slope was 25.24 mV dec−1, which was better than the performance of some transition metal-based OER catalysts reported before. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy further revealed the good kinetics in the electrolysis process. Furthermore, the high structural stability of the nanosheet array promotes the generation of the active phase in the OER process, so it has good stability after continuous operation for 20 h at a current density of 50 mA cm−2.
