Hypoxia serves as a critical determinant in the advancement of various intractable pathological conditions including oncological disorders and hypovascular wounds, which may profoundly attenuate the efficacy of pharmacological interventions and substantially inhibit the physiological recovery processes. Consequently, in an effort to mitigate the inherent constraints of conventional methodologies (e.g., exogenous oxygen delivery systems), a self-powered triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)-based algae-integrated pliable and enveloped device (TAPED) operates as a wearable system to sustain oxygen generation. The TAPED system harnesses biomechanical energy generated through natural bodily movements to energize an integrated luminescent source, enabling controlled photosynthesis for sustained, on-demand oxygen production. The incorporation of TENG technology renders TAPED self-sufficient, eliminating the necessity for external recharging, reducing device mass, and improving convenience for continuous oxygen delivery. Additionally, its body-attachable design circumvents risks associated with direct algal implantation, such as immunogenic reactions and infections. Specifically, experimental application of TAPED has exhibited significant therapeutic efficacy in diverse pathological conditions, including diabetic chronic infected wounds, breast carcinoma tumors, and lactic acid accumulation consequent to strenuous exercise-induced fatigue. Collectively, the TAPED represents an advanced therapeutic approach, which holds substantial potential for translational application within clinical contexts, particularly for enhancing patient prognosis in hypoxic diseases such as oncology and wound management.

Current photodynamic therapy (PDT) faces several intrinsic limitations, including insufficient oxygen supply and limited penetration of external light sources. Herein, we report a nanoconjugate, which, in response to the elevated hydrogen peroxide levels associated with tumor tissues, can supplement the oxygen needed for PDT and provide local self-illumination. Consisting of a MnFe2O4 core, a metal–organic framework shell loaded with the chemiluminescence reagent luminol, and a hyaluronic acid surface coating, the nanoconjugate is highly effective for suppressing cancer tissues in vivo via PDT in the absence of externally delivered light.

Excellent efficiency of combinational therapy of chemotherapy and photodynamic therapy (PDT) highly depends on the amounts of drug and oxygen in tumor tissue. However, how to cleverly promote drug release accompanied with improving oxygen concentration remains a challenge. Herein, we proposed a gas-generator that realized a high drug loading and integrated facilitation of drug release with oxygen replenishment into a single and simple system, utilizing huge cavities and mesoporous channels of hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (HMSNs) for encapsulating oxygen (O 2 ) saturated perfluoropentane (PFP) droplets, indocyanine green (ICG) and doxorubicin (DOX), biocompatible polydopamine (PDA) as the gatekeepers. Under irradiation of 808 nm laser , the thermal effect of PDA caused PFP droplets occur liquid-gas phase transition that triggered the burst release of DOX and O 2 , finally amplifying the synergetic effects of PDT and chemotherapy both in vitro and in vivo. The influence of PFP, GSH and laser on drug release kinetic was explored through mathematical models. Notably, the mechanism of gas-generator on accelerating drug release under irradiation based on doing volume work and enhancing diffusion coefficient was clarified by researching the relation between DOX release, PFP release and temperature change. Additionally, the way of replenishing O 2 did not rely on intracellular components but timely offered abundant “fuels” for producing reactive oxygen species (ROS) when compared with traditional manners. This work provides a new research strategy for boosting drug release and opens an avenue for constructing multifunctional controlled delivery systems.

Microbial-mediated antimony (Sb) release from stibnite (Sb 2 S 3 ) threatens groundwater safety, yet how hydrological fluctuations regulate this biogenic process and its mechanism remain poorly understood. This study explored how hydrodynamic variations (simulating organic-oxygen recharge into anoxic aquifers) govern stibnite bio-weathering in Xikuangshan shallow groundwater through microcosms. The results revealed bacterial communities exhibit dual functionality under redox fluctuations: driving biofilm formation in anoxic phases and accelerating Sb release during oxic transitions. The AnH system (Anoxic-oxic-anoxic-oxic cycles with Na-lactate for Heterotrophs) demonstrated a maximum of Sb concentration at 0.63 mM after 16 days, primarily driven by Dechloromonas, Ferribacterium , and Thauera . Microbial metabolic byproduct nitrite activates oxygen to produce H 2 O 2 (maximum of 14.7 μM), which also contributes to the release and oxidation of antimony. Moreover, carbon source affects the pathway of bacterial antimony release. Na-lactate stimulated the expression of aioA (Sb-oxidation) in heterotrophs, while inorganic carbon (Na-bicarbonate) favored soxB (sulfur-oxidation) in autotrophic Thiobacillus and mixotrophic sulfur-oxidizers. In summary, oxygen and carbon sources regulate biofilm formation, aioA and soxB expression, and H₂O₂ generation, subsequently affecting Sb release/oxidation. This study deciphered how oxygen-carbon regimes govern microbial Sb mobilization, elucidating antimony biogeochemical dynamics under hydrological fluctuations.
