Despite its existence for more than 80 years, the titanium industry is still challenged by massive carbon emissions, high production costs, and large resource waste. More than one hundred million tons of Ti−bearing blast furnace slag (TB−slag) has been discarded in China because of the difficulty of reutilization, which requires efficient titanium extraction and recovery technologies. This paper describes a low−cost, carbon−emission−free method for Ti extraction and oxygen evolution via molten oxide electrolysis (MOE) vacuum distillation. After a comprehensive analysis of the binding energies and activities of liquid metals, the highlights of our study are as follows. 1) Sb has the best preferential deposition of Ti among a series of high−Ti−affinitive liquid metal cathodes (Cu, Ni, Pb, Sn, and Sb). 2) The Ir anode was first used in TB−slag with IrO 2 formed on its surface to protect it from further corrosion. 3) An alloy containing Ti and Ca can be obtained by MOE, and Ti and Ca metals can be refined by further vacuum distillation. 4) A closed loop is formed in the overall process owing to the recyclable Sb cathode and continuous feeding of TB−slag into the electrolyte. This simple, low−cost, and environmentally friendly method can realize the efficient utilization of Ti resources and achieve carbon neutrality.

With the increasing demand for high energy density and rapid charging performance, Li-rich materials have been the up and coming cathodes for next-generation lithium-ion batteries. However, because of oxygen evolution and structural instability, the commercialization of Li-rich materials is extremely retarded by their poor electrochemical performances. In this work, Li-deficient materials Li0.3NbO2 and (Nb0.62Li0.15)TiO3 are applied to functionalize the surface of Li1.2Mn0.54Ni0.13Co0.13O2, aiming to suppress oxygen evolution and increase structural stability in LIBs. In addition, a fast Li-ion transport channel is beneficial to enhance Li+ diffusion kinetics. The results demonstrate that the electrodes decorated with Li0.3NbO2 and (Nb0.62Li0.15)TiO3 materials exhibit more stable cycling stability after long-term cycling and outstanding rate capability.

The self-reconstruction of Ni-based electrodes and the in situ generation of oxy-hydroxides are widely investigated as crucial prerequisites for efficient oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, the transformation is usually time-consuming and surface-limited, resulting in insufficient active sites with unsatisfactory intrinsic activity. Herein, we provide a NH3-treated Fe-doped NiMoO4 hydrate as a highly active OER pre-catalyst, with an overpotential of only 240 mV at 100 mA cm−2 and 270 mV at 300 mA cm−2. By combination of multiple quasi-situ and in situ techniques, the enhanced performance is ascribed to the lattice distortion in the pre-catalyst induced by the NH3 treatment. Firstly, the lattice defects with tensile strain and voids accelerate the selective dissolution of MoO42− and ensure the rapid and bulk reconstruction of the pre-catalyst with enriched active sites. Moreover, it could modulate the electronic structure and optimize the synergism between Ni and Fe, facilitating the dynamic evolution of Fe-doped γ-NiOOH (γ-Ni(Fe)OOH). The intimately interacted Ni–Fe dual-sites from γ-Ni(Fe)OOH and the resultant distorted structure facilitate the formation and adsorption of active oxygen species, accounting for the improved intrinsic activity for OER.

The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts, which can keep active for a long time in acidic media, are of great significance to proton exchange membrane water electrolyzers. Here, Ru-Co 3 O 4 electrocatalysts with transition metal oxide Co 3 O 4 as matrix and the noble metal Ru as doping element have been prepared through an ion exchange–pyrolysis process mediated by metal-organic framework, in which Ru atoms occupy the octahedral sites of Co 3 O 4 . Experimental and theoretical studies show that introduced Ru atoms have a passivation effect on lattice oxygen. The strong coupling between Ru and O causes a negative shift in the energy position of the O p-band centers. Therefore, the bonding activity of oxygen in the adsorbed state to the lattice oxygen is greatly passivated during the OER process, thus improving the stability of matrix material. In addition, benefiting from the modulating effect of the introduced Ru atoms on the metal active sites, the thermodynamic and kinetic barriers have been significantly reduced, which greatly enhances both the catalytic stability and reaction efficiency of Co 3 O 4 .

The Nickel-rich layered cathode materials charged to 4.5 V can obtain a specific capacity of more than 200 mAh g −1 . However, the nickel-rich layered cathode materials suffer from the severe capacity fade during high-voltage cycling, which is related to the phase transformation and the surface sides reactions caused by the lattice oxygen evolution. Here, the simultaneous construction of a Mg, Ti-based surface integrated layer and bulk doping through Mg, Ti surface treatment could suppress the lattice oxygen evolution of Ni-rich material at deep charging. More importantly, Mg and Ti are co-doped into the particles surface to form an Mg 2 TiO 4 and Mg 0.5– x Ti 2– y (PO 4 ) 3 outer layer with Mg and Ti vacancies. In the constructed surface integrated layer, the reverse electric field in the Mg 2 TiO 4 effectively suppressed the outward migration of the lattice oxygen anions, while Mg 0.5– x Ti 2– y (PO 4 ) 3 outer layer with high electronic conductivity and good lithium ion conductor could effectively maintained the stability of the reaction interface during high-voltage cycling. Meanwhile, bulk Mg and Ti co-doping can mitigate the migration of Ni ions in the bulk to keep the stability of transition metal–oxygen (M−O) bond at deep charging. As a result, the NCM@MTP cathode shows excellent long cycle stability at high-voltage charging, which keep high capacity retention of 89.3% and 84.3% at 1C after 200 and 100 cycles under room and elevated temperature of 25 and 55 °C, respectively. This work provides new insights for manipulating the surface chemistry of electrode materials to suppress the lattice oxygen evolution at high charging voltage.
