Reversible hydrogen storage in AlH3−LiNH2 system

Zhang Liang,He Zhi-Ling,Ning Hua,Luo Hui,Wei Qin-Qin,Qing Pei-Lin,Huang Xian-Tun,Wang Xin-Hua,Li Guang-Xu,Huang Cun-Ke,Lan Zhi-Qiang,Zhou Wen-Zheng,Guo Jin,Ismail Mohammad,Liu Hai-Zhen

As a hydrogen storage material, both AlH 3 and LiNH 2 possess a high hydrogen capacity. However, the dehydrogenated AlH 3 can hardly absorb hydrogen under normal conditions, while LiNH 2 will generate NH 3 rather than H 2 upon decomposition. In this work, we report that the combination of AlH 3 and LiNH 2 through simple ball milling leads to partial reversibility of the AlH 3 −LiNH 2 system and the suppression of NH 3 liberation. The negatively charged H δ − in AlH 3 will react with the positively charged H δ + in LiNH 2 through a redox reaction to form Li 2 NH, AlN, and H 2 at 120−170 °C. After dehydrogenation at above 270 °C, Li 3 AlN 2 is generated, which is crucial for the reversibility of this system. The more the Li 3 AlN 2 generated, the better the reversibility of this system. The dehydrogenation capacity of AlH 3  + 2LiNH 2 at the third cycle (3.0 wt%) is higher than that of AlH 3  + LiNH 2 (1.2 wt%) due to the generation of more Li 3 AlN 2 . The role of AlH 3 /Al in the AlH 3 −LiNH 2 system is to fix the nitrogen into the form of AlN and Li 3 AlN 2 and thus suppress the liberation of NH 3 . Therefore, the synergy of AlH 3 and LiNH 2 leads to the reversibility of the Li–Al–N–H system and the suppression of NH 3 . Graphical abstract

Adding activated carbon to the system with added zero-valent iron further improves anaerobic digestion performance by alleviating ammonia inhibition and promoting DIET

Shuang Zhang,Xinxin Ma,Dong Xie,Weijie Guan,Min Yang,Pan Zhao,Ming Gao,Qunhui Wang,Chuanfu Wu

The addition of activated carbon (AC) may improve the efficiency of anaerobic digestion (AD) system to which zero-valent iron (ZVI) has been added. This study investigated the effects of the addition of AC on the AD system with ZVI added. Results showed that the cumulative methane production of 5 g/L ZVI + 5 g/L AC (5ZVI + 5AC) was 2.77–35.0% higher than that of 5 g/L ZVI, 10 g/L ZVI and control. The combined addition shortened the time to reach maximum daily methane yield by 18.2% compared to ZVI groups. Meanwhile, 5ZVI+5AC had the lowest free ammonia concentration (average 461 mg/L) amongst all groups, thus effectively alleviating the ammonia inhibition. Microbial community analysis showed that the combined addition of ZVI and AC enriched hydrogenotrophic methanogens ( Methanoculleus ) and direct interspecies electron transfer related microorganisms ( Syntrophomonas and Methanosaeta ), possibly enhancing electron exchange to accelerate methane production.

Microbial insights towards understanding the role of hydrochar in alleviating ammonia inhibition during anaerobic digestion

Muhammad Usman,Zhijian Shi,Mengyuan Ji,Shuang Ren,Gang Luo,Shicheng Zhang

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is known to be inhibited by high concentration of ammonia. The present study proposed and demonstrated the utilization of hydrochar, which is produced by hydrothermal liquefaction of biomass, to alleviate ammonia inhibition. Three different concentrations (0.5, 4 and 8 g/L) of ammonia were tested with acetate as substrate. It was found that hydrochar significantly reduced the lag phase and promoted the methane production rates. The methane production rate was increased by around 10% at both 0.5 and 4 g/L ammonia, while it was increased by as high as 220% at 8 g/L ammonia with the addition of hydrochar. Although hydrochar adsorbed certain amounts of organics and ammonia, the adsorption did not have apparent positive effect on methane production rate. 16S rDNA analysis revealed that hydrochar increased the α-diversity at higher ammonia concentration, and enriched different microbes at each ammonia concentration. Considering the significant increase of methane production rate at 8 g/L ammonia, proteomic analysis was also conducted. Although 16S rDNA analysis showed hydrochar resulted in the enrichment of Clostridium , Methanobacterium and Methanosarcina , slightly different results were obtained by proteomic analysis, which showed hydrochar enriched Clostridium , Methanosarcina and Methanosaeta . The growth of Methanosarcina was inhibited at 8 g/L ammonia, while hydrochar facilitated its growth. The proteins of Methanosarcina involved in both hydrogenotrophic (HM) and aceticlastic methanogenesis (AM) pathways were upregulated by hydrochar. The proteins involved in HM pathway of strictly aceticlastic methanogen Methanosaeta was found to be up-regulated with hydrochar, and it indicated Methanosaeta was involved in direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET), which might be related with the enhanced methane production rate. In addition, Wood–Ljungdahl (WL) pathway of Clostridium was also found to be upregulated with hydrochar. Clostridium might be the bacteria that provide H + and e - to Methanosaeta for DIET considering its enrichment with hydrochar.

Niobium fluoride-modified hydrogen evolution reaction of magnesium borohydride diammoniate

Yujie Lv,Bao Zhang,Haixiang Huang,Bogu Liu,Wei Lv,Jianguang Yuan,Guanglin Xia,Xuebin Yu,Dalin Sun,Ying Wu

Metal borohydride ammoniates have become one of the most promising hydrogen storage materials due to their ultrahigh capacities. However, their application is still restricted by the high temperature of hydrogen desorption and the release of ammonia. Here, to promote the dehydrogenation evolution and suppress the ammonia release, different amounts of NbF 5 were introduced into Mg(BH 4 ) 2 ·2NH 3 . Compared to the pure Mg(BH 4 ) 2 ·2NH 3 , the Mg(BH 4 ) 2 ·2NH 3 -NbF 5 composites exhibit lower onset dehydriding temperatures (53–57 °C) and higher dehydriding capacities (5.6 wt.%–8.2 wt.%) at below 200 °C, with the complete suppression of ammonia. In addition, 7.4 wt.% H 2 could be released from Mg(BH 4 ) 2 ·2NH 3 –5 mol% NbF 5 composite at 200 °C within 20 min and the apparent activation energy is calculated to be 60.28 kJ mol –1 , which is much lower than that of pure Mg(BH 4 ) 2 ·2NH 3 (92.04 kJ mol –1 ). Mg(BH 4 ) 2 ·2NH 3 should mechanochemically react with NbF 5 , forming dual-metal (Mg, Nb) borohydride ammoniate and spherical MgF 2 . The introduction of electronegative Nb cation results in-situ formation of (Mg, Nb) borohydride ammoniate towards a lower dehydrogenation temperature and a higher hydrogen release purity. The increased phase boundaries among the Mg(BH 4 ) 2 ·2NH 3 , dual-metal (Mg, Nb) borohydride ammoniate, and MgF 2 phases further facilitate the hydrogen diffusion during the dehydrogenation of the composites.

Effect of zero-valent iron addition on ammonia inhibition alleviation and fecal indicators reduction in anaerobic digestion of pig manure

Hongyuan Sun,Rui Tang,Kuizu Su,Shoujun Yuan,Jingwei Feng,Wei Wang,Zhen-Hu Hu

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is widely used for the treatment of pig manure, but is easily suffered from ammonia inhibition. The residual pathogenic bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes in the digestate pose potential risks to human health and the environment. Zero-valent iron (ZVI) addition in AD has been extensively investigated to enhance AD performance, but little is known about the impacts of ZVI addition on ammonia inhibition and the digestate biosafety. In this study, the effect of ZVI addition on ammonia inhibition alleviation and reduction of fecal indicator bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes in AD of pig manure and its mechanisms were investigated. ZVI addition at 10 g/L effectively alleviated ammonia inhibition and promoted a shift in dominant methanogens, improving the tolerance of AD systems to high concentration of ammonia. Interestingly, ZVI addition within 5–20 g/L significantly enhanced the reduction of total coliforms, Enterococci and tetracycline resistance genes in the digestate, which was due to the generation of ferrous ions, causing the co-precipitation of suspended solids and indicator bacteria. These results provided valuable insights for the potential application of ZVI addition in the AD of pig manure.

Relieving ammonia inhibition by zero-valent iron (ZVI) dosing to enhance methanogenesis in the high solid anaerobic digestion of swine manure

Xiaoshan Meng,Qianwen Sui,Jibao Liu,Dawei Yu,Yawei Wang,Yuansong Wei

Relieving from ammonia inhibition and enhancing the utilization of thermodynamically unfavorable propionate are crucial for methane harvest in the high solid anaerobic digestion (HSAD) of ammonia-rich swine manure. In this study, the potential of dosing zero-valent iron (ZVI, 150 um) for enhancing the methanogenesis to resist total ammonia (TAN) over 5.0 g-N·L −1 was investigated via batch experiments under mesophilic condition. The cumulative methane production was enhanced by 22.2% at ≥160 mM ZVI dosage and the HSAD duration was further shortened by 50.6% at ≥320 mM ZVI dosage. The enhanced methanogenesis was mainly resulted from the full utilization of propionate and the accelerated collapse of posterior-biodegradable organics which might be driven by ZVI. Results of microbial community and qPCR ( mcrA ) showed that ZVI might trigger the blooming of Methanosarcina (from 27.9% to 78.3%) and Syntrophomonas (0.5% to 3.7%) and attribute to their possible direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) to enhance propionate utilization. Besides, the main methanogenesis might remain in the effective aceticlastic pathway even under free ammonia (FAN) almost 1.0 g-N·L −1 because syntrophic acetate oxidizing bacteria ( SAOB ) decreased to almost none at 320 mM ZVI dosage. Dosing ZVI could relieve HSAD from TAN inhibition and more dosage was required to resist FAN inhibition.

Effects of different quorum sensing signal molecules on alleviation of ammonia inhibition during biomethanation

Siyi Chen,Ziang Kong,Liwei Qiu,Han Wang,Qun Yan

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a promising technology for achieving both organic wastes treatment and energy recovery. However, challenges such as ammonia inhibition still remain. Quorum sensing (QS) system is relevant with the regulation of microbial community behaviors by releasing and sensing signal molecules, which could improve methane production during AD process. Therefore, the current study explored the effects of different quorum sensing signal molecules on alleviation of ammonia inhibition. The results showed that both secretion of N -butyryl- DL -homoserine lactone (C4-HSL) and N -(β-ketocaproyl)- DL -homoserine lactone (3OC6-HSL) could be inhibited by high ammonia stress while stimulation of N -hexanoyl- L -homoserine lactone (C6-HSL) and N -octanoyl- DL -homoserine lactone (C8-HSL) secretion might be triggered by ammonia toxicity. Moreover, the alleviation of ammonia inhibition could be achieved by both introducing 3OC6-HSL (0.5 μM) and combination of 3OC6-HSL (0.1 μM) and biochar (4 g/L). Exogenous 3OC6-HSL could regulate microbial social behaviors and enhance the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) to promote anaerobic digestion. In addition, the mitigation of ammonia inhibition through exogenous 3OC6-HSL and biochar were confirmed by microbial community changes ( Methanobacterium , Propionicicella and Petrimonas ). Critical enzymes involved in both acidification and methanogenic steps were enhanced after adding the combination of 3OC6-HSL and biochar. The combination of low levels of 3OC6-HSL and biochar could promote both direct interspecies electron transfer (DIET) process and communication between different anaerobic microorganisms to mitigate ammonia inhibition. The current study will provide primary insights for conquering ammonia inhibition during biomethanation.

Effect of zero-valent iron combined with carbon-based materials on the mitigation of ammonia inhibition during anaerobic digestion

Jibao Liu,Jiaxi Zheng,Yutong Niu,Zhuang Zuo,Junya Zhang,Yuansong Wei

Ammonia inhibition is a prominent problem for anaerobic digestion (AD) of nitrogen-rich organic wastes. This study evaluated the effect of zero valent iron (ZVI) and its hybrid with activated carbon (AC), graphite and Fe-C material on the mitigation of ammonia inhibition under ammonia concentration over 5 g/L, according to the batch mode experiments. Results showed that ZVI (4 g/L) and its hybrid with carbon-based material preserving methane production from ammonia inhibition, with kinetics of shortening lag phase from 4.77 d to 2.62 d or even below 2 d with carbon-based material. ZVI preserved methane production with the enrichment of Methanosarcina (the relative abundance was over 80%), which was mostly derived from the activating hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis through the enhanced DIET but not the changes of ORP and FAN.
