Composting is a process of converting potentially harmful organic matter into harmless organic fertilizer through microbial fermentation. This process enables the rational use of resources and represents an embraced technology marked with sustainable development features. Hindering ammonia emissions during composting is vital, as ammonia is a valuable resource and harmful if emitted excessively. Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membranes are often used as functional covering membranes to prevent ammonia produced by composting from releasing due to its hydrophobicity . However, they are susceptible to oily aerosols in oily composting, which affects microbial decomposition in aerobic composting. Thus, the development of amphiphobic PTFE membrane is necessary and meaningful. For the amphiphobic PTFE membrane, an important issue is the amphiphobic stability of the membrane, especially in the special alkaline environment of composting. Herein, we suggest the use of the polymer to wrap around nanoparticles and PTFE membrane fibers to prepare stable amphiphobic membranes as functional covering membranes for oil-containing composting. Poly(methyl-3,3,3-trifluoropropylsiloxane) (PTFPMS) and 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane (PFTS) entangled with each other and then wrapped the nanoparticles and membrane fibers to form stable amphiphobic membranes with high roughness and low surface energy. The prepared membrane had high liquid repellency to water (~152.8°), diiodomethane (~127.5°), and n-hexadecane (~127.0°). This membrane also possessed a high anti-oil fouling. Moreover, the membrane amphiphobicity exhibited a high stability. This is attributed to the stable fixation of nanoparticles on PTFE membrane fibers with PFTS/PTFPMS. Therefore, the amphiphobicity of the membrane was not affected by ammonia. As for the ammonia filtration efficiency, the amphiphobic membrane had a filtration efficiency of 77.4 % within 10 min, an increase of 6.8 % compared to the PTFE membrane, demonstrating the potential of the membrane we developed toward hindering ammonia emission. This work provides a new way of developing high-performance membrane for the oily composting process.

Advancement of the absorbent for CO 2 capture is essential in optimizing the performance and reducing the negative environmental effects associated with this technology. Despite ammonia's promise as an absorbent, the volatility limits its practical application and creates potential environmental pollution . Therein, we assess various additives (amino acids, carbonates, and alkanolamines) for ammonia-based solvents using multi-stage circulation absorber from the viewpoints of aerosol emission, ammonia emission, and CO 2 capture efficiency. Experimental findings reveal that ammonia volatilization can be inhibited by the protonation of free ammonia by carboxyl groups and the formation of hydrogen bonding between amino/hydroxyl groups and ammonia, with ammonia emission reduced by 21.7 %, aerosol emission reduced by 26.5 %, and CO 2 capture efficiency increased to a maximum of 87.8 % under the condition of adding histidine . Moreover, the experiment highlights a positive correlation between total ammonia emission and aerosol concentration/diameter. Additionally, tests combining source abatement with water wash exhibit up to 50.5 % aerosol removal efficiency and up to 76.6 % ammonia removal efficiency. To further mitigate emissions, a comprehensive approach is proposed, achieving an 84.4 % reduction in ammonia emission and a 61.9 % reduction in aerosol emission. Finally, a method for recycling ammonia for desulfurization is suggested.

Ammonia (NH3) emissions have become a serious environmental pollution problem, and livestock production is an important source of NH3emissions, especially pig farming. The origin of NH3release is the hydrolysis of urea in urine that is catalyzed by urease present in feces. This research determined the urease activity in fresh feces by Michaelis–Menten kinetics and then compared the process of urea hydrolysis and ammonia production in fresh slurry. For feces, the kinetic parametersVmaxandK’mwere calculated by determining the concentration of ammonium in initial 5 minutes in closed vessels, and the resultingVmaxandK’mwere 26.9 ± 1.2 mmol·[urea]·kg−1·min−1and 99.7 ± 3.5 mmol·[urea]·l−1, respectively. In fresh slurry, the rate of urea hydrolysis determined directly was higher than the ammonium formation rate in the early stage (0–8 h) and was accompanied by a rapid rise in pH. In addition, we further explored the effects of temperature, pH, and mixing rate on urease activity within different periods (0–5 min, 5 min–2 h and 2 h–8 h). Our observations show that the optimal urease activity occurred at 35 °C, pH 6.71, and 821.83 rpm of stirring, indicating that microbial species and communities associated with urease production are affected by environmental conditions.
