Production of acetonitrile via catalytic fast pyrolysis of biomass derived polylactic acid under ammonia atmosphere

Ziguo Yuan,Xin Zhang,Qian Yao,Ying Zhang,Yao Fu

In this study, a series of catalysts including different metal oxides loading on HZSM-5(Si/Al = 25) and cobalt oxides loading on different supports were synthesized to catalyze fast pyrolysis (CFP) of biomass derived polylactic acid (PLA) to produce acetonitrile under ammonia atmosphere. Both the metal and the acid of the catalyst had a crucial influence on the yield of acetonitrile and Co/HZSM-5(25) produced most acetonitrile. Other factors that might affect the product distribution including cobalt loading, reaction temperature, resident time and NH 3 flow rate have been investigated systematically. Under the optimized CFP condition (650 ℃; resident time 2.4 s; NH 3 flow rate 80 ml/min), the carbon yield and selectivity of acetonitrile in liquid product reached 50.2% and 83.6%, respectively. The possible reaction pathway from PLA to acetonitrile was also studied and proposed. PLA firstly cracked into lactic acid through thermal decomposition and formed lactide at the same time. Then lactic acid and lactide cracked into low-molecular aldehydes, ketones and acids. These aldehydes and ketones reacted with ammonia to form imines, acids to amides, and finally to acetonitrile and small amount of proponitrile under the catalysis of Co/HZSM-5 catalyst.

Enhancement of renewable N-heterocycles production via catalytic co-pyrolysis of glycerol and cellulose over HZSM-5 under ammonia atmosphere

Bingbing Luo,Kai Wu,Jiajun Yu,Siyu Wang,Yihan Wang,Chenyang Chu,Huiyan Zhang

Catalytic pyrolysis of biomass for efficient N-heterocycles production is highly promising but extremely challenging. Herein, catalytic co-pyrolysis of glycerol and cellulose under ammonia atmosphere was proposed to enhance the N-heterocycles yield. First, a solvolysis effect of glycerol, which could improve the thermal depolymerization of cellulose, was observed in thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). After that, the major influential factors, including Si/Al ratio, reaction temperature, and glycerol-to-cellulose (Gly:Cel) ratio, were investigated systematically. The N-heterocycles yield, as well as the comprehensive synergies of feedstocks, reached their maximum value under the conditions of Si/Al = 85, 550 ℃, and Gly:Cel = 5:1. The best synergistic extents for pyrroles , pyridines, and indoles were 105.3%, 71.3%, and 38.8%, respectively. The mechanism insight showed that, the thermal decomposition of cellulose was promoted while the coking of oxygenated molecules was suppressed during the catalytic co-pyrolysis process. Consequently, more oxygenated molecules were generated and retained for further catalytic conversion into imine intermediates and N-heterocycles.

Bio-inspired highly active catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline electrolyte

Sisi Liu,Chengwei Deng,Lan Yao,Hexiang Zhong,Huamin Zhang

A novel non-platinum oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst was synthesised by the pyrolysis of carbon-supported vitamin B12 under ammonia atmosphere. The resultant catalyst was characterised by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning TEM (STEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analyses. Results demonstrated that the catalyst had a spherical structure. XPS revealed that the nitrogen configuration was changed after pyrolysis, and nitrogen species played a key role in catalysing the ORR. The catalyst exhibited an enhanced ORR activity than commercial 20% Pt/C in alkaline media . The catalyst had an electron transfer number of 3.9, which was very close to the ideal theoretical value of 4. Moreover, the catalyst displayed superior methanol tolerance to Pt/C in alkaline medium, demonstrating its potential application as a cost-effective catalyst for direct methanol alkaline fuel cells .

Small variation induces a big difference: the effect of polymerization kinetics of graphitic carbon nitride on its photocatalytic activity

Tong Li,Bo Lai,Jing Liu,Shuangtao Yuan,Nan Liu,Xiaojia Zhao,Xiaoguang Luo,Dongli Yu,Yuanchun Zhao

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-CN) has emerged as a promising visible-light-responsive photocatalyst, and its activity is highly sensitive to synthesis conditions. In this work, we attempt to correlate the photocatalytic activity of g-CN with its production yield, which is kinetically determined by the specific condensation process. Bulk g-CN samples were synthesized by the conventional condensation procedure, but in static air and flowing air, respectively. The one synthesized in static air showed a lower production yield with an increased specific surface area and preferential surface chemical states, corresponding to a significantly improved activity for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution (PHE) and dye degradation. We further synthesized a series of g-CN samples by merely changing the synthetic atmosphere, the ramping rate, and the loading amount of the precursor, and the difference in their PHE performance was found to be as high as 7.05 times. The notable changes in their production yields as well as the photocatalytic activities have been discussed from the point of view of polymerization reaction kinetics, and the self-generated NH3 atmosphere plays a crucial role.
