Stepwise extraction of Cu, Co, and Ni from hazardous waste: A novel process based on ammonia leaching and 2-((4-butylphenoxy)methyl)pyridine (BMPY) extraction system

Haokai Peng,Qiyuan Zheng,Zuoying Cao,Shengxi Wu,Qinggang Li,Mingyu Wang,Wenjuan Guan,Guiqing Zhang

The extraction of Cu, Co, and Ni from spent batteries and spent catalysts is crucial for resource recovery and environmental pollution reduction. Ammonia leaching offers a promising alternative in the hydrometallurgical treatment of these hazardous waste due to its selective leaching properties. However, the development of this method has been impeded by the lack of efficient extractants. In this work, an efficient extractant, 2-((4-butylphenoxy)methyl)pyridine (BMPY), was designed and synthetized. Utilizing the high affinity of BMPY for Cu, Co, and Ni and exploiting the different ionic association states of these metals at different pH levels, an effective process for separating Cu, Co, and Ni from ammonia leach solution was proposed, producing CuSO 4 , CoSO 4 , and NiSO 4 with over 99.9 % purity. Mechanism investigations and pilot-scale experimental validation have demonstrated that the ammonia leaching-BMPY extraction process is a viable method for extracting Cu, Co, and Ni from hazardous waste, with significant potential for industrial application.

Synergic process of molybdenum recovery and ceramic preparation for clean and efficient utilization of industrial leaching residues

Guihong Han,Yanghao Feng,Mengyu You,Hu Sun,Shengpeng Su,Bingbing Liu,Yanfang Huang

Ammonia-leaching residues of roasted molybdenite concentrates are intractable wastes and are mostly stockpiled in factories. Common treatments suffer from low Mo recovery and secondary pollution. This study has developed a synergistic process involving a single-step roasting with the addition of Al 2 O 3 and MoO 3 to recover Mo and simultaneously prepare porous refractories from the residues containing 5.6% Mo. The Mo separation efficiency, ceramic properties, and thermal behaviors—including chemical reactions, melting transformations, ceramic structure evolutions, and Mo species migrations—were comprehensively investigated. It was found that the addition of Al 2 O 3 facilitated CaMoO 4 decomposition to release volatile MoO 3 , thus promoting Mo recovery. The mullite started to form at about 900 °C, grew into whiskers, and further into interconnected clusters, under the catalytic effect of liquid MoO 3 and the sintering effect of glassy melt. Liquid MoO 3 was scattered on the outer surface of whisker clusters, achieving a high separation efficiency of over 98% after roasting at 1300 °C for 150 min. Meanwhile, a ceramic with a high porosity of 64.2% and a high compressive strength of 21.2 MPa was obtained, exhibiting promise for serving as a high-temperature insulation refractory. Overall, this study presents a novel approach for both the profound recovery of Mo and the value-added utilization of gangue minerals derived from CaMoO 4 -bearing wastes.

Sustainable ammonia leaching for efficient nickel and cobalt recovery from mixed hydroxide precipitate

Yu Wang,Yanjuan Zhang,Caixia Lv,Guangye Wei,Long Meng,Jiajie Fu,Zhihui Yu,Jingkui Qu

Due to the complex process, environmental impact, and high cost of conventional solvent extraction for Ni and Co recovery from mixed hydroxide precipitate, this study introduces an ammonia leaching process to selectively extract Ni and Co. Specifically, a ball milling and water washing pretreatment removes soluble Mg 2+ , followed by (NH 4 ) 2 CO 3 leaching, which dissolves 98 % Ni and 96 % Co, leaving impurities (Mn, Mg, Fe, Al) unreactive. The leachate contains 25.68 g/L of Ni, 2.4 g/L of Co, and 0.07 g/L of Mn, with Mg, Fe, and Al levels below detection limits, demonstrating effective separation of Ni and Co. Mn is also removed through ammonia leaching and subsequent precipitation as MnCO 3 . Kinetic analysis revealed that the diffusion-controlled process allows for efficient extraction at lower temperatures, further reducing energy consumption. Moreover, the ammonia solution can be reused for five consecutive cycles, maintaining leaching efficiencies above 95 % for Ni and 92 % for Co, offering cost savings. This method simplifies the recovery process, eliminates the need for organic solvents, reduces environmental impact, and lowers operational costs, making it a more sustainable and economically viable alternative for industrial applications.
