Preparation and Enhanced Electrocatalytic Activity of Ru-WN/CC Composite Materials for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Yan Xiaoxu,Zhao Xianfeng,Shao Xinxin,Li Kangpeng,Sun Minghong,Ji Xinpeng,Lu Huidan,Liu Yongping

Platinum-group metal ruthenium (Ru) is considered an ideal substitute for platinum (Pt) in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to its excellent electrocatalytic performance and cost that is 20 times lower than Pt. Herein, we prepared Ru-doped WO 3 nanosheets array on carbon cloth (CC) using the hydrothermal method, followed by successful high-temperature nitridation to obtain Ru-WN/CC nanoarray electrocatalysts. As prepared Ru-doped WN nanosheets exhibit a highly porous structure, providing abundant active sites for HER. Electrochemical performance tests demonstrate that compared to pristine WN/CC, 7% Ru-WN/CC exhibits a reduced overpotential of 94 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm -2 , with a Tafel slope of only 51.4 mV dec -1 and an Rct of 6.08 Ω. Moreover, it maintains high catalytic activity for at least 24 hours under acidic conditions. The superior electrocatalytic activity of Ru-WN/CC is attributed to the significant acceleration of the kinetic rate of WN electrocatalysts by Ru doping, the reduction of electronic transfer resistance in WN, and the enlargement of the electrochemically active surface area of WN. This study provides an important reference for the development of novel low noble metal-doped electrocatalytic materials and has guiding significance for the application of metal nitrides in water splitting for hydrogen production. In Situ Integrated Co3W−WN Hybrid Nanostructure as an Efficient Bifunctional Electrocatalyst by Accelerating Water Dissociation and Enhancing Oxygen Evolution

Jianping Zheng,Jianpo Chen,Liping Xiao,Xiaoning Cheng,Hao Cui

Graphical In the hybrid Co 3 W−WN catalyst , the tungsten cobalt alloy not only acts as a water-dissociation promoter to accelerate the Volmer step, thus improving the HER activity, but also transforms in situ into OER active species to facilitate the water-oxidation process. So, the Co 3 W−WN hybrid electrocatalyst exhibits enhanced HER and OER activities with overpotentials of 43 and 273 mV, respectively, at 10 mA cm −2 . Due to the difference of catalytic mechanisms, the design of an efficient alkaline bifunctional catalyst not only needs to organically integrate different active sites, but also has to simultaneously optimize the catalytic activity of both hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Here, we propose a strategy of killing two birds with one stone to construct the efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst by simultaneously accelerating water dissociation and enhancing oxygen evolution. The self-supported tungsten nitride nanowires decorated with tungsten cobalt alloy nanoparticles (Co 3 W/WN/CC) were synthesized on the flexible carbon cloth. Co 3 W can act as both a water dissociation promoter to enhance HER activity and OER active species to facilitate water oxidation via in situ transformation, thus effectively improving the overall water splitting performance. As expected, compared with pure tungsten nitride catalysts, the hybrid electrocatalyst not only shows enhanced HER activity with an overpotential decrease from 255 to 43 mV, but also achieves an excellent OER performance with overpotential of 273 mV in 1 M KOH aqueous solution. Furthermore, by employing Co 3 W/WN/CC as cathode and anode, the overall water splitting process needs 1.582 V to drive a current density of 10 mA cm −2 and maintains without decay for 80 hours. This work expands the effective strategy for building efficient, stable and low-cost alkaline bifunctional electrocatalysts.

Selective Hydrogen Production Enabled by WN Plasmon-Mediated Formic Acid Adsorption Reconfiguration

Jinhe Li,Cheng Jin,Yusen Zhao,Xiaohui Yu,Wei Ren,Lijuan Sun,Lele Wang,Weikang Wang,Jianjun Zhang,Juan Yang,Qinqin Liu

Hydrogen serves as a critical solar-to-fuel energy vector, with formic acid (FA) presenting unique advantages as a liquid organic hydrogen carrier due to its high hydrogen content and ambient-phase stability. However, competitive dehydrogenation (H2 + CO2) and dehydration (CO + H2O) pathways during FA decomposition have hindered achieving >90% selectivity. Here, we demonstrate precise control over FA adsorption geometry through interfacial engineering by anchoring plasmonic tungsten nitride (WN) cocatalysts onto CdS hollow spheres (WN/CdS). This modification reconfigures FA adsorption from H-terminal to O-coordination dominance, shifting the activation pathway of FA from initial C–H protonation to O–H cleavage. Consequently, dehydrogenation is steered toward 92.5% H2 selectivity. Plasmon–phonon coupling elevates the localized temperature to 90.4 °C within the catalyst system, while the barrier-free ohmic contact enables ultrafast electron migration to the WN. Photogenerated electrons accumulated on WN synergize with intrinsic surface electrons to generate energetic hot carriers, effectively facilitating FA dehydrogenation via lowered activation barriers. The resultant WN/CdS achieves a high H2 generation of 19.4 mmol h–1 g–1. This study proposes a photon–plasmon synergistic strategy for selective chemical bond cleavage in hydrogen carriers, thereby establishing a groundbreaking paradigm for high-efficiency, solar-driven hydrogen production.

Irradiation-Resistant Two-Dimensional W2N3 as Efficient Saturable Absorbers: Implications for Space Use

Shu-Yan Wang,Ming-Wei Mao,Ke Wang,Zhan-Zu Feng,Ru-Han Ma,Yu-Long Tang,Qiang Wang,Hao-Li Zhang

Space exploration is inseparable from advanced antiradiation materials with exceptional properties. Among these, nonlinear optical materials and devices, such as irradiation-resistant saturable absorbers (SAs), have garnered significant attention, particularly due to their critical role in integrated photonics for space use. This study presents a comprehensive evaluation of the space adaptability of two-dimensional (2D) W2N3 under simulated space radiation conditions. When subjected to 60Co γ-ray irradiation at doses exceeding 45 years of accumulation in a typical low-Earth orbit, W2N3 retained its robust third-order nonlinear saturable absorption across the visible- to near-infrared spectral range. Femtosecond transient absorption spectra offer a comprehensive view of the carrier dynamics of W2N3 before and after irradiation, delving into radiation effects and damage mechanisms that are otherwise elusive to conventional techniques. The synthesized W2N3 nanosheets were successfully employed as efficient SAs for Q-switched mode-locking in a Yb-doped fiber laser. The laser system operated at ∼1 μm NIR with high pulse energy and low saturation power, highlighting the remarkable potential of W2N3 for integration into lasers, modulators, and other photonic devices. Notably, the irradiated W2N3 demonstrated an identical mode-locking performance compared to its pristine counterpart. These findings provide valuable guidance for the rational design and screening of nonlinear optical materials capable of withstanding space radiation, offering significant implications for future space-based photonic applications.
