Carbon dots-induced carbon-coated Ni and Mo2N nanosheets for efficient hydrogen production

Fan Liu,Yang Tang,Jiaming Zhao,Yu Bai,Jiucun Chen,Liangliang Tian,Syed Shoaib Ahmad Shah,Shu-juan Bao

The insufficient intrinsic activity and electrical conductivity of transition metal-based catalysts still inhibits their practical application. In this work, carbon-coated nano-Ni-armed Mo 2 N nanosheets (Ni@C-Mo 2 N) assembled on Ni Foam (NF) by using CDs-NH 2 as reaction inducing and welding reagent. In-depth experiments reveal that the functional groups of (CDs) play a decisive role in regulating the phase composition and hierarchical structure of the final hybrid material. As electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), the optimized hierarchical Ni@C-Mo 2 N/NF achieved a very low overpotential of 38 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and outstanding stability of over 60 h, which should from the synergistic interfacial effect among the Ni, Mo 2 N and graphitic carbon optimized the electronic structure of catalyst with enhanced active sites, and improved electrical conductivity. This work provides novel insights for constructing more hierarchical multicomponent materials with the help of variable functional groups of CDs for further electrochemical applications.

A “MOFs plus MOFs” strategy toward Co–Mo2N tubes for efficient electrocatalytic overall water splitting

Xia Shi,Aiping Wu,Haijing Yan,Lin Zhang,Chungui Tian,Lei Wang,Honggang Fu

The rational combination of early-transition metal nitrides (ETMNs) with late-transition metals (LTMs) is a promising method for the design of highly efficient catalysts. Herein, we report the design of Co–Mo2N tubes based on a “MOFs plus MOFs” strategy for efficient electrocatalytic water splitting in 1 M KOH. The 1-D Mo-MOFs (Mo source) were prepared in large quantities by the reaction of imidazole with MoO3. ZIF-67 (Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-67) (Co source) was then grown on the 1-D Mo-MOFs (Mo-based metal–organic frameworks) to obtain ZIF-67/Mo-MOFs by a solution-phase assembly method. The effective combination is due to the similarity of the ligands in the two MOFs. After nitriding, the ZIF-67 was converted into Co metal, and Mo-MOFs were converted into hollow Mo2N, thus giving a hollow Co–Mo2N hybrid with a Co outer layer on the Mo2N inner core. The ratio of Co and Mo in Co–Mo2N can be easily tuned to give optimized catalysts. The tests indicated that the combination of Co and Mo2N can significantly boost the HER performance of materials. At the current density of 10 mA cm−2, the overpotential (η10) on Co–Mo2N was only 76 mV, which is much lower than 296 mV for Mo2N derived from Mo-MOFs and 180 mV for Co–carbon from ZIF-67. The hybrid has also shown improved OER activity in comparison with Mo2N and Co; therefore, the Co–Mo2N can be used as both anode and cathode for an overall water-splitting cell with η10 of 1.576 V. The improved HER activity can be ascribed to the intimate contact between Co and Mo2N for optimized adsorption on reagents, the tube-like structure for easy mass transfer and the good conductivity of Mo2N, which is favourable for transmitting charge.

Self-floating gelatin aerogel integrated urchin-like MoS2/Mo5N6/C with hybrid photothermal enhancement for salt-resistant solar desalination

Liangri Ying,Fei Liang,Zhen Huang,Jing Ding,Weilong Wang,Shule Liu,Jianfeng Lu

Solar-driven steam generation is widely considered as a promising strategy for desalination. However, before this technology can be practically implemented, certain challenges such as suboptimal steam generation rates and inevitable salt deposition need to be addressed. In this study, we propose a novel bilayer structure aerogel (MS-aerogel), which confines urchin-like MoS 2 /Mo 5 N 6 /C in a biomass gelatin substrate to achieve high-efficiency desalination in high concentration brine solutions. The urchin-like MoS 2 /Mo 5 N 6 /C that hybrid semiconductor MoS 2 , plasmonic Mo 5 N 6 and porous carbon performs superior light-to-heat conversion performance to its individual components. Additionally, under the collaborative action of hydrophilic groups and unique nanostructured surface, the MoS 2 /Mo 5 N 6 /C exhibits a notable reduction in interface evaporation enthalpy from 2405.8 to 1694.6 J g −1 . Taking into consideration the comprehensive thermal management performance, the self-floating MS-aerogel achieves an excellent evaporation rate of 1.89 kg m -2 h −1 under one sun irradiation. Furthermore, the vertically aligned vessels present in the MS-aerogel facilitate salt transportation, effectively preventing crystalline salt accumulation on the evaporator surface. Consequently, even after continuous 12 h desalination in 20 wt% brine, the MS-aerogel maintains an outstanding evaporation rate of 1.54 kg m -2 h −1 , surpassing most reported self-floating evaporators. This research offers a valuable reference for the design of high-efficiency and salt-resistant solar evaporators.

Noble-metal-free heterostructure for efficient hydrogen evolution in visible region: Molybdenum nitride/ultrathin graphitic carbon nitride

Shuaiqi Gong,ZhengJun Jiang,Penghui Shi,Jinchen Fan,Qunjie Xu,Yulin Min

Molybdenum nitride (MoN) has been attracting increasing attention in recent years for the application of electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction. However, the application of MoN for photocatalytic H 2 evolution has seldom been reported. Here, we report that the sample with the heterostructure between Mo 2 N and 2D ultrathin g-C 3 N 4 nanosheet (CN) is fabricated via boil bathing method for the use of the visible light photocatalytic H 2 evolution. Without using any noble metal cocatalyst, the H 2 evolution rate of Mo 2 N/CN under visible light irradiation reaches 0.89 μmolg −1  h −1 , which is ≈148 times higher than that of pure CN. The photoelectron-chemical experiments suggest that the carriers in Mo 2 N/CN can separate and transfer easier than those in CN due to the effect of Mo 2 N as the modification of CN. The combination of the Mo 2 N and CN represents not only a simple but also an economical and powerful method for the highly effective photocatalytic H 2 generation in the visible region.

MoS2 Nanosheets Functionalized Multichannel Hollow Mo2N/Carbon Nanofibers as a Robust Bifunctional Catalyst for Water Electrolysis

Dengyu Xie,Guang Yang,Deshuang Yu,Yanan Hao,Silin Han,Yafei Cheng,Feng Hu,Linlin Li,Huaixin Wei,Changchun Ji,Shengjie Peng

Herein, a heterogeneous system composed of few-layered MoS2 nanosheets functionalized multichannel hollow carbon nanofibers containing Mo2N (Mo2N–MoS2 MCNFs) was successfully developed for the hydrogen/oxygen evolution reactions (HER/OER). The obtained Mo2N–MoS2 MCNFs manifests superior performance with improved durableness for electrocatalysis. Independently, at 10 mA cm–2, the optimal Mo2N–MoS2(1:1) MCNFs achieves overpotentials (η10) of 131 mV for HER and 270 mV for OER. The intimate interaction between the few-layered MoS2 nanosheets array and 1D multichannel hollow carbon nanofibers Mo2N (Mo2N/Carbon MCNFs) advances better exposure of dynamic heterointerfaces, improves the conductivity of electron transfer, and enriches active sites with efficient mass transport. When employed to drive the water electrolysis, Mo2N–MoS2(1:1) MCNFs also demonstrates a modest overall potential of merely 1.63 V to hit 10 mA cm–2. This study will provide a well-designed structure and development for functional materials in electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices.

Artificial heterointerfaces of defect-rich Ni and amorphous/crystalline MoN enable efficient hydrogen evolution reaction

Wei Peng,Zhaoyang Wang,Ruihu Lu,Qi Li,Ziyun Wang,Yan Zhao,Lin Xu,Liqiang Mai

Developing highly-active and robust electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is extremely desirable for hydrogen production but remains highly challenging. Herein, we reported a rational strategy to fabricate a novel metallic heterostructure composed of defect-rich nickel and amorphous/crystalline molybdenum nitride anchored on a carbon matrix (MoN/Ni@C) as a superior HER electrocatalyst. Owing to the electronic structural modulation of the interfacial synergy of the defects and phase engineering, the MoN/Ni@C exhibits a low HER overpotential of 27 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 73 mV dec −1 in 1.0 M KOH solution, without any distinct attenuation after 180 h of operation. Density functional theory calculation results demonstrate that the interfacial electron transfer leads to a distorted Ni surface incorporation of the MoN phase, achieving the optimal thermoneutral hydrogen adsorption free energies (ΔG *H ) of Mo and Ni active sites. Meanwhile, the amorphous/crystalline structure in the MoN phase exposes more active sites and promotes structural stability. This work provides new insights into designing heterogeneous interfaces of non-noble-metal-based electrocatalysts with superior HER activities.

Heterostructured nanoflower-like MoO2–NiO/NF: A bifunctional electrocatalyst for highly efficient urea-assisted water splitting

Zeting Deng,Xiangbowen Du,Kaicheng Qian,Leilei Du,Zheng Fang,Jiayang Zhu,Jia Hong,Feng Wang,Tongtong Li,Tong Wei,Renhong Li

The conventional anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) can be ideally replaced by the urea oxidation reaction (UOR) to achieve efficient hydrogen generation due to the superior thermodynamics. However, the UOR involves a slow 6-electron transfer dynamic, necessitating the utilization of high-performance catalysts to enhance catalytic efficiency. In this work, a bifunctional transition metal-based catalysts, namely, MoO 2 –NiO/NF heterostructure, is effectively synthesized using two-step hydrothermal methods and calcination. Benefiting from the heterogeneous interface, the nanoflower-like structure as well as the electron density redistribution, the MoO 2 –NiO/NF catalyst demonstrates remarkable durability and performance, with an overpotential of 139 mV to achieve 10 mA cm −2 for UOR. In addition, the bifunctional catalyst is used in a two-electrode electrolyzer, where a current density of 10 mA cm −2 is attained at a potential of 1.317 V, which is 261 mV smaller than that of the conventional water splitting system. Based on the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the MoO 2 –NiO/NF heterostructure exhibits a higher density cloud in the vicinity of the Fermi level, revealing that it has faster electron transfer and higher electrical conductivity. Besides, the Mo sites and Ni sites are favorable for adsorption of CO(NH 2 ) 2 and H 2 O, respectively, which might optimize the reaction intermediates adsorption/desorption for UOR/HER, ultimately leading to the high electrocatalytic performance of MoO 2 –NiO/NF. This research opens a new window for the development of advanced heterojunction electrocatalysts assisted by urea electrocatalysis for cost-effective hydrogen production.

Polyvinyl alcohol protected Mo2C/Mo2N multicomponent electrocatalysts with controlled morphology for hydrogen evolution reaction in acid and alkaline medium

Xiaozhen Chen,Ji Qi,Pan Wang,Chuang Li,Xiao Chen,Changhai Liang

Herein, PVA-Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N nanospheres with surface roughness are synthesized via a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) involved approach and used for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The average crystallite size of the PVA protected nMo 2 CN nanospheres (6.1 nm) is one third of that of the PVA-Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N without PVA protection (17.9 nm). At 10 mA cm −2 current density, the as-synthesized PVA-Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N nanospheres with surface roughness exhibit HER overpotentials of 132 mV and 142 mV with corresponding Tafel slope of 51.8 mV dec −1 and 50.4 mV dec −1 in acid and alkaline medium, respectively. This high apparent activity can be attributed to the high intrinsic activity originated from the adjacent surface active sites of Mo 2 C and Mo 2 N as well as the large ECSA of PVA-Mo 2 C/Mo 2 N nanospheres with surface roughness.

Orthorhombic Mo3N2 nanobelts with improved electrochemical properties as electrode material for supercapacitors

Zhengwei Xiong,Jiang Yang,Zhipeng Gao,Qiang Yang,Deli Shi

As a typical supercapacitor electrode material, the reported Mo-N compounds mostly own one part of outstanding electrochemical properties (specific capacitance (C sp ), voltage window and cycling stability), and the well integration with three aspects was rare. Here using a novel MoO 3 precursor with ultra-long nanobelts (NBs) and stable orthorhombic crystal structure, we prepared unique Mo 3 N 2 NBs, which inherited the morphology and structure of the precursor greatly. Compared with other Mo-N compounds, the Mo 3 N 2 NBs both possessed the high C sp (220.3 F/g at 0.4 A/g), great cycling stability (98.3% C sp retention after 1500 cycles) and wide voltage window (0.95 V) due to the improved morphology, stable structure and excellent conductivity.

Ammonization-treated CuMo catalyst for efficient and selective CO2 hydrogenation to methanol

Tophet Wongladprom,Qi Li,Tianyu Guo,Hui Wu,Jie Li,Gang Wang,Chunshan Li

A highly effective catalyst is desired for CO 2 selective hydrogenation to methanol due to the kinetic limitation of this process, considering the heavy impact of CO 2 emission on global environment. Herein, a type of ammonization-treated CuMo catalyst was developed for CO 2 -to-methanol hydrogenation, which contains MoN and Mo 2 N species. The effect of catalyst preparation conditions on the physicochemical properties of the resulting sample was systematically investigated using multiple characterization techniques, including physical N 2 adsorption and desorption isotherms, XRD, HRTEM, XPS, Cu Auger spectra, H 2 -TPR and CO 2 -TPD. Structure-activity relationships analysis revealed that the proportion of Cu 0 and Mo δ+ (1 < δ < 4) in the catalyst is linearly correlated to the CO 2 transformative rate and methanol selectivity, respectively, which is considered to show synergistic effect on methanol production. Consequentially, the methanol production could reach up to 177.2 mg/g cat /h with a selectivity of 95.7 % at 230 °C and 4 MPa. In addition, the catalytic mechanism exploration employing in situ IR indicated the CO 2 hydrogenation towards methanol follows the formate route, and the Mo δ+ species facilitated the stabilization of CO 2 -derived reactive intermediates on the catalyst surface. Additionally, kinetic studies reveal methanol formation is primarily limited by CO 2 adsorption/activation rather than H 2 dissociation.

Crystalline-amorphous Cu0.81Ni0.19@CoN/Mo2N heterostructure nanosheets for carbon-free flexible Zn-air batteries-driven water electrolysis

Jing Qu,Zhongmin Wang,Zhixiao Zhu,Zeba Khanam,Weijiang Gan,Sakariyau Babatunde Abdulkadir,Selvam Mathi,Jianqiu Deng,Feng Wang,M.-Sadeeq Balogun

Designing carbon-free electrocatalysts that can efficiently drive hydrogen evolution (HER), oxygen evolution (OER), and zinc-air battery (ZAB) reactions in alkaline media remains difficult because of the different kinetic requirements of each process. Herein, we demonstrates a carbon-free crystalline-amorphous (C-A) Cu 0.81 Ni 0.19 @CoN/Mo 2 N heterostructured nanosheets synthesized through a single-step annealing method that simultaneously forms a crystalline alloy core and an amorphous nitride shell. This direct route eliminates carbon supports and avoids multi-stage alloying or nitridation, resulting in tightly coupled C–A interfaces that accelerate charge transfer and stabilize active sites. The catalyst delivers low overpotentials of 43 mV for HER and 297 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 , enabling an overall water splitting (OWS) low voltage of 1.56 V. It also maintains excellent durability under harsh electrochemical conditions owing to the absence of carbon, mitigating agglomeration and degradation. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the Cu 0.81 Ni 0.19 /CoN optimizes hydrogen adsorption, while the Cu 0.81 Ni 0.19 /Mo 2 N promotes oxygen intermediate formation. Integrated into a flexible ZAB, the catalyst exhibits a high specific capacity of 811.6 mAh g −1 , a small voltage gap of 1.15 V at 50 mA cm −2 , and 150 h of stable cycling. A self-powered system coupling this flexible ZAB-OWS system further demonstrates the practical viability of this one-step-engineered C–A heterostructure for sustainable energy applications.

Two-dimensional Mo-based compounds for the Li-O2 batteries: Catalytic performance and electronic structure studies

Xiaowei Mu,Chao Xia,Bin Gao,Shuyi Guo,Xueping Zhang,Jianping He,Yonggang Wang,Hao Dong,Ping He,Haoshen Zhou

Rechargeable Li-O 2 batteries have captured increasing attention owing to their ultra-high theoretical specific energy. However, this promising system is confronted with the large overpotential, limited discharge capacity and low cyclic life. Herein, three two-dimensional (2D) molybdenum-based compounds of MoN, MoO 3 and MoS 2 are used as cathode catalysts in Li-O 2 batteries . The catalytic performance and electronic structures of these catalysts are compared comprehensively. Electrochemical test results reveal the superior battery performance of MoN cathodes, which deliver the highest specific discharge capacity of approximately 7400 mAh g − 1 and the lowest discharge/charge overpotential of 0.19/0.72 V. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate the metallic property of MoN whereas MoO 3 and MoS 2 are poor conductive. Besides, interface properties between MoN and Li 2 O 2 products as well as reaction pathways of the Li-O 2 battery with MoN cathode are also investigated detailedly by DFT calculations, explaining the excellent catalytic properties of MoN at the atomic level. The present work provides intrinsic insights into designing high-performance cathode catalysts for Li-O 2 batteries with fine-tuned morphology and electronic characteristics.
