Corrosion behaviour of AlN ceramics in LiF-LiCl-LiBr-Li molten salt at 500 °C

Jian Zhang,Jin Huang,Ruxia Liu,Guoqiang Luo,Qiang Shen

Immersion tests of AlN in LiF-LiCl-LiBr-Li salt have been performed at 500 °C to study the corrosion behaviour of AlN. The results show that AlN initially corroded at a higher rate (2⋅10 −5 mg/(mm 2 ⋅h)) during 0−50 h than during 50−300 h (6⋅10 -6 mg/(mm 2 ⋅h)) because the formation of an alumina corrosion layer protected the AlN from further corrosion. The addition of metallic Li at low concentrations (<0.1 wt. %) to the molten salt inhibited the corrosion of AlN by preferentially depleting oxygen impurities, while Li at high concentrations (>0.1 wt. %) accelerated corrosion by reacting with YAG in AlN.

Graphene platelets/aluminium nitride metacomposites with double percolation property of thermal and electrical conductivity

Rui Yin,Yubai Zhang,Wen Zhao,Xiaoshuai Huang,Xiaomin Li,Lei Qian

Graphene platelets/aluminium nitride (GPLs/AlN) metacomposites with double percolation property of thermal and electrical conductivity were successfully fabricated by spark plasma sintering . Microstructures and phase composition of the GPLs/AlN metacomposites were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy , X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy . With increase of the GPLs contents, the double percolation property of thermal (19.27 wt% GPL) and electrical conductivity (19.03 wt% GPL) was found. Moreover, the negative permittivity behavior was also observed when the GPLs content reached 19.50 wt%, which was attributed to the formation of continuous GPLs networks. Finally, the equivalent circuit models were used to analyze the negative permittivity behavior. As the reactance ( Z′′ ) converted from negative to positive, the inductors were introduced into the equivalent circuit models, and the GPLs/AlN metacomposites went through the capacitive-inductive transition with the increasing GPLs content, corresponding to the negative permittivity behavior.

Preparation and Characterization of Thermally Conductive High Impact Polystyrene/AlN Composite

Nghiem Thi Thuong,Nguyen Ba Lam,Pham Anh Son,Nguyen Ba Chien,Nguyen Pham Duy Linh,Chu Thi Hai Nam,Nguyen Anh Vu

In the present work, AlN was modified with vinyltriethoxysilane (VTES), and its effect on the properties of a thermally conductive composite of high impact polystyrene (HIPS), and AlN was investigated. Three composites, HIPS/AlN5, HIPS/AlN9, and HIPS/moAlN9, were prepared by mixing HIPS and AlN in a toluene solution, followed by hot pressing. The HIPS/AlN composite was characterized by tensile test, impact strength, flexural strength, and hardness shore D. The sample HIPS/moAlN9 showed the improvement of these properties compared to that of the HIPS/AlN9 sample. The increment of those mechanical properties was due to the good interaction between the modified AlN and HIPS resin matrix, which was revealed by morphology observation by SEM. Incorporating modified AlN into the HIPS matrix was also found to enhance the thermal conductivity by about 20%, from 0.15 for HIPS to 0.18 (W/m·K) for HIPS/moAlN9. It was explained due to the good adherence of AlN to the HIPS, which provided more thermal conductive routes than HIPS/AlN. This approach provides a possible strategy to prepare thermally conductive HIPS composite, which may be suitable for electronic device that required heat dissipation.

Thermal conductivity of epoxy adhesive enhanced by hybrid graphene oxide/AlN particles

Wenhui Yuan,Qiangqiang Xiao,Li Li,Tao Xu

This study aims to improve the heat dispersion of electronic equipment by utilization of thermal conductive adhesive composed of epoxy matrix and filler. AlN particles with different size, graphite, graphene oxide (GO) were used alone or in a synergistic manner to prepare thermal conductive adhesives. The structure of prepared GO was characterized by XRD, FT-IR, Raman spectra and AFM. The analysis indicates that most of prepared GO is in single layer structure. The thermal conductivity and viscosity of adhesive were measured by thermal constants analyzer and rotational viscometer respectively. The results show adhesives filled with larger AIN particles possess higher thermal conductivity than that filled with smaller particles at the given filling content. GO is better than graphite as the filler to improve the thermal conductivity of the epoxy resin. When 8   wt% GO or 70   wt% 5   μm-AlN particles was added, the thermal conductivities of adhesives were about 6.42 times and 11.8 times that of pure epoxy respectively. To further improve the thermal conductivity, 50   wt% 5   μm-AlN particles and 6   wt% GO hybrid filler were proposed, and the final thermal conductivity reached up to 2.77   W/m   k, that was 14.6 times of that of neat epoxy. In addition, Agari equation as a systematic theoretical modelling was cited to analyze the effect of each filler on improvement of thermal conductivity of adhesive.

Rich microbubbles modifying the leaching mechanism of aluminum and aluminum nitride of secondary aluminum dross in sodium aluminate solution

Jie Tang,Guihua Liu,Tiangui Qi,Qiusheng Zhou,Zhihong Peng,Xiaobin Li,Yilin Wang,Leiting Shen,Jiaping Zhao,HongJie Hao

An understanding of the mechanisms of reactive Al and AlN in a sodium aluminate solution contributes to the safe and effective utilization of secondary aluminum dross (SAD). This study demonstrates that the slurry temperature increased exponentially with an increase in the SAD dosage. Synergistic kinetic phenomena in the form of a large dosage and high temperature occurred initially in relatively stable microbubbles and later in the slurry. The leaching efficiencies of pure Al and AlN powders were greater than that of Al and AlN in SAD, respectively. Meanwhile, the leaching rate became higher for Al in SAD but lower for AlN in SAD compared to that of pure Al and AlN powder. The AlN particles in SAD were covered by Al(OH) 3 precipitated from the saturated solution in the bubbles. As a result, the relatively stable microbubbles with a thick border accelerated the reaction of Al and AlN and produced a saturated solution thereby changing the leaching efficiency and leaching rate of AlN in SAD. The embedded Al and AlN grains in the SAD, relatively stable microbubbles, and the SAD particles covered by Al(OH) 3 , synergistically changed the leaching mechanism. These results provide further understanding of the reaction mechanism of rich bubbles and facilitate the optimization of the comprehensive utilization of SAD.

Effect of water on the breakdown and dielectric response of polypropylene/nano-aluminium nitride composites

Wang Xinyu,Qiang Dayuan,Hosier Ian,Zhu Yanqiu,Chen George,Andritsch Thomas

The influence of water immersion and silane treatment on the AC breakdown and the complex dielectric response of polypropylene/nano-aluminium nitride (PP/nano-AlN) composites has been investigated. The as-received filler was examined to have a nanoscale particle distribution with a hexagonal shape and slight hydrolysation. Grafting the aluminium nitride with an octyl silane reduces the weight increase in samples filled with 10 wt% of aluminium nitride during water immersion by 3, from 0.29 to 0.09%. The results suggest that the AC breakdown strength and complex permittivity of “wet” composite samples are related to the silane treatment of the nanofiller. The AC breakdown strength of octyl silane-treated samples after 9 days of water immersion shows comparable results to the dry samples, while a reduction can be seen on non-treated samples. Although silane-treated samples still show an increased dielectric loss at low frequency after water immersion, a significant reduction in low-frequency dispersion of real and imaginary permittivity can be seen when compared to the non-treated composites. This indicates that significant gains can be obtained for PP/nano-AlN composites by suitable silane treatments.

D-GQDs Modified Epoxy Resin Enhances the Thermal Conductivity of AlN/Epoxy Resin Thermally Conductive Composites

Duanwei Zhang,Fusheng Liu,Sheng Wang,Mengxi Yan,Xin Hu,Mengying Xu

This article proposes a method of increasing thermal conductivity (λ) by improving the λ value of a matrix and reducing the interfacial thermal resistance between such matrix and its thermally conductive fillers. D-GQDs (graphene quantum dots modified by polyetheramine D400) with a π–π-conjugated system in the center of their molecules, and polyether branched chains that are rich in amino groups at their edges, are designed and synthesized. AlN/DG-ER (AlN/D-GQDs-Epoxy resin) thermally conductive composites are obtained using AlN as a thermally conductive and insulating filler, using D-GQDs-modified epoxy resin as a matrix. All of the thermal conductivity, electrically insulating and physical–mechanical properties of AlN/DG-ER are investigated in detail. The results show that D-GQDs linked to an epoxy resin by chemical bonds can increase the value of λ of the epoxy–resin matrix and reduce the interfacial thermal resistance between AlN and DG-ER (D-GQDs–epoxy resin). The prepared AlN/DG-ER is shown to be a good thermally conductive and insulating packaging material. Keywords:thermal conductivity;graphene quantum dots;AlN;epoxy resin;thermally conductive composites

Ultrafine electrospun fiber based on ionic liquid/AlN/copolyamide composite as novel form-stable phase change material for thermal energy storage

Chao Lin,Weipei Li,Yurong Yan,Hanhan Ke,Zhengyu Liu,Lingli Deng,Zhiming Qiu

A novel form-stable phase change material (FSPCM) based on ionic liquid/aluminum nitride/copolyamide composite were fabricated from electrospinning approach. The ionic liquid 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide (IL) was chosen as phase change materials while nano aluminum nitride (AlN) and copolyamide 6/12 (CoPA) were chesen as additive and supporting matrix, respectively. The surface morphology and heat storage property had been systematically investigated by Scanning Electronic Microscopy (SEM) and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), respectively. Results showed that the diameter of the phase change fibers are 0.92–1.07 μm and was influenced by the IL and AlN content. With 57 wt% of IL and 5 wt% of AlN, the composite fiber achieved a fusion enthalpy of 86.4 J/g and the thermal conductivity was increased by 165.2% compared to that of IL/CoPA. Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) and thermal cycle test also indicated a good thermal stability and reusability of the composite fiber. Furthermore, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) analyses indicated that new hydrogen bonds between IL and CoPA were formed in the composite and showed a significant effect on the thermal performance of the composite fibers. The electrospun composite fiber based on ionic liquids can be applied as form-stable phase change material in thermal energy storage and temperature regulation.

Investigation on the Electrical Conductivity of Transformer Oil-Based AlN Nanofluid

M. Dong,L. P. Shen,H. Wang,H. B. Wang,J. Miao

Aluminum-nitride-(AlN)-transformer oil-based nanofluid was prepared by dispersing AlN nanoparticles in transformer oil. The composition-dependent electrical conductivity of AlN-transformer oil nanofluid was investigated at different ambient temperatures. The results indicate the nonlinear dependences of the electrical conductivity on volumetric fraction and temperature. In comparison to the pure transformer oil, the electrical conductivity of nanofluid containing 0.5% AlN nanoparticles has increased by 1057 times at 60°C. By considering the electrophoresis of the AlN nanoparticles, a straightforward electrical conductivity model is established to modulate and understand the experiment results.

Shear Mode Bulk Acoustic Resonator Based on Inclined c-Axis AlN Film for Monitoring of Human Hemostatic Parameters

Shuren Song,Da Chen,Hongfei Wang,Chaohui Li,Wei Wang,Wangli Yu,Yanyan Wang,Qiuquan Guo

Measurement of hemostatic parameters is essential for patients receiving long-term oral anticoagulant agents. In this paper, we present a shear mode bulk acoustic resonator based on an inclinedc-axis aluminum nitride (AlN) film for monitoring the human hemostatic parameters. During the blood coagulation process, the resonant frequency of the device decreases along with a step-ladder profile due to the viscosity change during the formation of fibers in blood, revealing the sequential coagulation stages. Two hemostatic parameters with clinical significance, prothrombin time (PT) along with its derived measure of international normalized ratio (INR), are determined from time-frequency curves of the device. Furthermore, the resonator is compared with a commercial coagulometer by monitoring the hemostatic parameters for one month in a patient taking the oral anticoagulant. The results are consistent. In addition, thanks to the excellent potential for integration, miniaturization and the availability of direct digital signals, the proposed device has promising application for point of care coagulation monitoring. Keywords:bulk acoustic wave;AlN film;hemostatic parameters;viscosity sensor

Preparation of high performance AlN/Hydantion composite by gelcasting and infiltration processes

Chao Jiang,Dou Zhang,Xueping Gan,Rui Xie,Fuqiang Zhang,Kechao Zhou

A new processing technique was proposed for preparing aluminum nitride (AlN)/Hydantion interpenetrating network composites. The technique comprised gelcasting AlN green bodies, degreasing, and infiltrating Hydantion epoxy resin and hardener into the AlN skeleton under a vacuum condition. The effects of AlN contents on the viscosities of AlN slurries and the flexural strength , thermal conductivity , dielectric constant of the AlN/Hydantion composites were evaluated. The highest thermal conductivity and flexural strength of the AlN/Hydantion composites reached 3.56   W/mK and 101.3   MPa, respectively. The fracture surface of the composite revealed that an interpenetrating polymer network in the AlN ceramic skeleton was formed. The AlN/Hydantion composite exhibited the dielectric constant of 7.3 at 1   MHz.

Significantly enhanced thermal conductivity in polyimide composites with the matching of graphene flakes and aluminum nitride by in situ polymerization

Xuhua He,Xin Yu,Yuechuan Wang

Highly thermally conductive polymer composites are urgently required for effective heat dissipation in advanced electronic devices. Rational matching of thermal conductive fillers and proper preparation method are important for obtaining a highly thermally conductive composites at low filler content. Here we report polyimide (PI) composites filled with graphene flakes (GF) and polyhedral aluminum nitride (AlN), which simultaneously exhibit high thermal conductivity, improved thermal mechanical properties, and excellent thermal stability. PI composite films were readily prepared by in situ polymerization at the presence of fillers that are dispersed with sonication. The thermal conductivity of PI composite films reached 11.19 Wm −1 K −1 at the low content of 1 wt% GF and 10 wt% AlN, which is ascribed to the construction of synergistically enhanced heat transfer pathways by the combination of the hybrid fillers. The PI composite films with hybrid fillers also showed lower electrical conductivity than that of the PI composite films with single GF filler. This study provides an effective method for preparation of high-performance thermal management materials.
