The x LiBH 4 -Li 3 N ( x = 1, 2, 4) composites were investigated on their lithium ionic conductivities . They maintained the original phase structures of orthorhombic LiBH 4 and hexagonal β-Li 3 N during ball milling according to the analyses by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS) tests showed that LiBH 4 -Li 3 N composites lift the lithium ionic conductivities from that of bulk LiBH 4 by nearly 100 times at low temperature. LiBH 4 -Li 3 N offers 1.06 × 10 − 5 S cm − 1 of conductivity while bulk LiBH 4 possesses only 2.05 × 10 − 7 S cm − 1 at 323 K. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) tests indicated that the voltage window of composites could attain 3 V, which is much more stable than Li 3 N (< 1 V). No thermodynamic incident appears in DSC curves except for the orthorhombic-hexagonal transition endothermic peak of LiBH 4 in the x LiBH 4 -Li 3 N composites. It confirms the phases stabilities of the x LiBH 4 -Li 3 N ( x = 1, 2, 4) composites before and after CV tests. In-situ solid state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) tests on LiBH 4 -Li 3 N illustrated that the high conductivity in low temperature should not come from high-temperature phase of LiBH 4 . Therefore, the enhancement of lithium ionic mobility of the composite might be attributed to both Li 3 N and the interfaces between small crystallites where transmission electron microscope (TEM) morphology showed the appearance of amorphous grain boundary.

Amorphous solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) hold great promise for advancing the application of all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs), owing to their favorable ionic conductivity, structural tunability, and promising electrochemical performance. However, the absence of universal design principles for amorphous SSEs limits their development. By fundamentally re-evaluating the amorphization-forming ability of amorphous SSE systems, this study establishes a nitrogen-driven universal strategy to convert diverse metal chlorides into amorphous xLi3N-MCly (0.3 ≤ 3x ≤ 1.9; M denotes a metal element; 2 ≤ y ≤ 5) SSE. Nitrogen synergistically disrupts crystalline order via distorted coordination polyhedra and N-bridged networks, while dynamic bond reorganization enables rapid Li+ migration, achieving ionic conductivity of 2.02 mS cm‒1 for 0.533Li3N-HfCl4 at 25 °C. Structural-property relationships reveal that high charge density and bridging capability of N3‒ enhance network disorder, shorten metal-coordinating atom distances, and optimize Li+ diffusion pathway connectivity. ASSBs employing 0.533Li3N-HfCl4 retain 81.87% capacity after 2000 cycles at 1,000 mA g‒1 with high cathode loading (6.24 mg cm‒2), demonstrating engineering viability. This work provides a paradigm for rational design of high-performance amorphous SSEs.

In Solid lithium metal batteries (LMBs), polymer electrolytes have been extensively studied due to their intrinsic safety and high energy density. However, commonly used polymer matrix such as polyethylene oxide (PEO), polyacrylonitrile (PAN), and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) cannot solve the problem of lithium dendrites and low ionic conductivity, resulting in short battery life and low-capacity retention. Here, a series of aromatic polyurea ion-solvating membranes (ISMs) with rigid and flexible structures is designed and prepared. With incorporation of LiTFSI, these ISMs exhibit high ionic conductivity (1.81 × 10 -3 S cm -1 ), good electrochemical stability (5.1 V vs Li + /Li), and excellent mechanical strength (39 MPa). The formed inorganic/organic solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer enriched with LiF, Li 3 N, and Li-N-C in the batteries leads to a uniform lithium deposition. As expected, the Li|Li symmetrical cells show a stable galvanostatic Li plating/stripping cycling performance with a low overpotential of 900 h at 0.1 mA cm −2 . Most importantly, the LFP|ISM|Li coin cells still have a high capacity of 142.9 mAh g -1 after 650 cycles at 0.5 C, with a capacity retention rate of 91%.

Cubic boron nitride and hexagonal boron nitride are the two predominant crystalline structures of boron nitride. They can interconvert under varying pressure and temperature conditions. However, this transformation requires overcoming significant potential barriers in dynamics, which poses great difficulty in determining the c-BN/h-BN phase boundary. This study used high-pressure in situ differential thermal measurements to ascertain the temperature of h-BN/c-BN conversion within the commonly used pressure range (3–6 GPa) for the industrial synthesis of c-BN to constrain the P–T phase boundary of h-BN/c-BN in the pressure–temperature range as much as possible. Based on the analysis of the experimental data, it is determined that the relationship between pressure and temperature conforms to the following equation: P=a+\displaystyle \frac{1}{b}T. Here, P denotes the pressure (GPa) and T is the temperature (K). The coefficients are a = −3.8±0.8 GPa and b = 229.8±17.1 GPa/K. These findings call into question existing high-pressure and high-temperature phase diagrams of boron nitride, which seem to overstate the phase boundary temperature between c-BN and h-BN. The BN phase diagram obtained from this study can provide critical temperature and pressure condition guidance for the industrial synthesis of c-BN, thus optimizing synthesis efficiency and product performance.

A pressing need for enhancing lithium-ion battery (LIB) performance exists, particularly in ensuring reliable operation under extreme cold conditions. All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) offer a promising solution to the challenges posed by conventional LIBs with liquid electrolytes in low-temperature environments. In this study, leveraging the benefits of amorphous solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) x Li 3 N-TaCl 5 (1 ≤ 3 x ≤ 2), we develop ASSBs capable of functioning effectively under extreme cold conditions. The designed ASSBs, employing LiCoO 2 positive electrode with a mass loading of 4.46 mg cm ‒2 and a Li-In negative electrode, demonstrate initial discharge capacities of 183.19, 164.8 and 143.78 mAh g ‒1 under 18 mA g ‒1 at ‒10, ‒30, and ‒40 °C, respectively, and exhibit a final discharge capacity of 137.6 mAh g ‒1 at 18 mA g ‒1 and ‒30 °C in the 100th cycle. Moreover, the ASSBs demonstrate an initial discharge capacity of 51.94 mAh g ‒1 at 18 mA g ‒1 and ‒60 °C with cycling over 200 h.

Solid-state electrolyte (SSE) is anticipated to exhibit proper mechanical strength and effectively inhibit the penetration of lithium dendrites. However, the growth of lithium dendrites is inevitable, driven by the intrinsic properties of SSEs. Hence, guiding the growth of lithium dendrites in a controllable way is more feasible instead of completely preventing their growth. Here, we present a strategically designed structural layer composed of graded lithium nitride particles, which guides the growth of lithium dendrites within confined spaces. Meanwhile, this layer is paired with a less lithium-stable electrolyte and enables the guided lithium dendrites to self-limit within localized regions at the interface. The comprehensive analysis further reveals that the designed bilayer SSE effectively harnesses the interface-generated pressure during battery cycling, achieving dynamic control of lithium dendrite growth. This interfacial structure design of SSE holds broad applicability for regulating lithium dendrites in all-solid-state lithium-metal batteries.

Conventional strategies for designing inorganic solid-state electrolytes, typically via doping superionic lattices, are constrained by dopant–lattice compatibility. Here we propose solid dissociation in which halide van der Waals materials act as solid solvents to dissolve salts, forming amorphous ion-conductive solids. Using this approach, we discover 73 materials, with 40 exhibiting ionic conductivities exceeding 10 −3 S cm −1 , conducting Li + , Na + , Ag + and Cu + . We analyse atomic-scale interactions between solvents and salts, uncovering dynamic structural rearrangements that enable solid dissociation. Across diverse solvent–salt pairs, consistent ionic environments emerge, revealing universal mechanisms governing ion transport in this system. Analogous to the compositional tuning of liquid electrolytes, solid dissociation allows targeted engineering of solid-state electrolytes for specific application conditions. Prototype electrolytes have been developed for fast-charging cells, low-temperature cells and 4.8-V high-voltage cells, and demonstrate enhanced dry-room stability and cost advantages. Solid dissociation offers a versatile platform for advancing next generation solid-state electrolytes.

Silicon monoxide (SiO) has garnered significant attention as a promising anode material for high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries due to its lower volume expansion relative to pure silicon (Si) and its higher capacity compared to graphite. Nevertheless, the poor intrinsic electronic/ionic conductivity and the low initial Coulombic efficiency (ICE) of SiO result in inferior rate capability and inadequate practical energy density, hindering its commercial viability. Here, a simultaneous prelithiation and in situ nitrogen (N) doping approach for SiO utilizing lithium nitride (Li 3 N), which significantly enhances both the ICE and lithium-ion (Li + ) diffusion kinetics, is proposed. N atoms are not only incorporated into the carbon layer on the surface of SiO but also form a uniformly distributed amorphous Li 2 SiN 2 phase within the SiO, facilitating Li + transport. Molecular dynamics simulations demonstrate that the Li + diffusion coefficient of amorphous Li 2 SiN 2 is significantly higher than that of other crystalline phases present in the prelithiated SiO matrix. The 1.5 Ah pouch cells further validate that the SiON-0.175/graphite||NCM811 exhibits a high ICE of 88.06%, and it retains 51.5% of its capacity even under 4C fast charging conditions. This study offers new insights into the development of next-generation SiO anode materials with high ICE and high-rate performance.
