The development of an effective and inexpensive electrocatalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the key to achieve high hydrogen production since water splitting has sluggish OER kinetics. Herein, a composite of nickel-rich nickel nitride (NR-Ni3N) with graphitic carbon nitrides (GCNs) was prepared for the electrocatalytic OER, showing a low overpotential of ∼290 mV, a small Tafel slope of ∼70 mV dec–1 at 10 mA cm–2 current density, and low loss of activity after 36 h of test in an alkaline electrolyte, outperforming the pure Ni3N and even the noble catalyst RuO2. The characterization results revealed that the defective GCNs can promote the generation of a Ni-rich region in Ni3N in the nitridation process, and the high conductivity of the formed robust Ni–Ni3N heterojunction and its strong synergistic effect with GCNs explain the excellent OER electrocatalytic performances of NR-Ni3N/GCNs. This work provides a novel feasible strategy for the development of highly active OER electrocatalysts.

Electrocatalytic water splitting is being considered an effective approach to address the increasing energy crises and environmental issues. But it still suffers from a lack of efficient and stable electrocatalysts. Developing electrocatalysts through an integration of defect engineering and heterojunction engineering could be a reliable solution for improved activity, stability, and practicability. In this context, a heterostructure of Ni 3 N/Mo 2 C@CP was synthesized using a facile hydrothermal method and two-step heating treatment, including carbonization and nitridation. Moreover, the defects were intentionally produced by zinc intermediate doping in Ni 3 N/Mo 2 C@CP. The ratio of Zn versus Ni and Mo metal precursor was gradually increased to optimize the defects in Ni 3 N/Mo 2 C@CP heterostructure for excellent HER performance. Eventually, the optimized defect-rich Ni 3 N/Mo 2 [email protected] heterostructure requires only a small overpotential of 65 mV to attain the current density of 10 mA cm −2 , indicating a remarkable HER performance. Apart from the HER activity, defect-rich Ni 3 N/Mo 2 [email protected] heterostructure exhibited long-term stability over 112 h for continuous electrochemical hydrogen production.

Highly efficient and low-cost catalysts for water electrolysis are crucial for the advancement of clean energy. In this study, an innovative hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst is synthesized, which consists of Ni and NiMoN nanoparticles coated by nitrogen-doped carbon layers and grown on a black pearl carbon substrate (denoted as NC@NiMoN NPs/BPC). The double carbon design-comprising a surface carbon coating layer and a bottom carbon substrate-modulates the electronic structure of NiMoN and facilitates the uniform dispersion of NiMoN NPs on BPC, endowing this hierarchical electrocatalyst with high activity and long durability. The electrochemical specific surface area of NC@NiMoN NPs/BPC is 42 times larger than that of NC@NiMoN without the BPC substrate. Moreover, this catalyst exhibits superior HER performance with low overpotentials of 11.3 and 74.6 mV at 10 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, outperforming the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Additionally, a typical alkaline water electrolyzer equipped with the NC@NiMoN NPs/BPC cathode shows negligible voltage decay after 250 h of continuous electrolysis, indicating excellent stability. This work provides not only an efficient hydrogen evolution electrocatalyst but also an innovative double-carbon strategy for the construction of efficient electrocatalysts for HER in water electrolysis.

Electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) offers a promising strategy to lower CO 2 emission while producing value-added chemicals. A great challenge facing CO 2 RR is how to improve energy efficiency by reducing overpotentials. Herein, partially nitrided Ni nanoclusters (NiN x ) immobilized on N-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNT) for CO 2 RR are reported, which achieves the lowest onset overpotential of 16 mV for CO 2 -to-CO and the highest cathode energy efficiency of 86.9% with CO Faraday efficiency >99.0% to date. Interestingly, NiN x /NCNT affords a CO generation rate of 43.0 mol g −1 h −1 at a low potential of −0.572 V (vs RHE). DFT calculations reveal that the NiN x nanoclusters favor *COOH formation with lower Gibbs free energy than isolated Ni single-atom, hence lowering CO 2 RR overpotential. As NiN x /NCNT is applied to a membrane electrode assembly system coupled with oxygen evolution reaction, a cell voltage of only 2.13 V is required to reach 100 mA cm −2 , with total energy efficiency of 62.2%.

A three-dimensional nickel nitride with reduced graphene oxide composite on nickel foam (s-X, where s represents Ni3N/rGO@NF and the annealing temperature X can be 320, 350, or 380) electrode has been fabricated through a facile method. We demonstrate that s-350 has excellent urea oxidation reaction (UOR) activity, with a demanded potential of 1.342 V to reach 10 mA/cm2and bears high hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. It provides a low overpotential of 124 mV at 10 mA/cm2, which enables the successful construction of its two-electrode alkaline electrolyzer (s-350||s-350) for water–urea splitting. It merely requires a voltage of 1.518 V to obtain 100 mA/cm2and is 0.145 V lower than that of pure water splitting. This noble metal-free bifunctional electrode is regarded as an inexpensive and effective water–urea electrolysis assisted hydrogen production technology, which is commercially viable. Keywords:bifunctional;Ni foam;electrocatalysis;hydrogen evolution reaction;urea oxidation reaction
