Glyphosate, the most widely utilized herbicide, frequently coexists with nitrogen fertilizers such as urea in soil environments. Nitrogen cycling is a key process for maintaining soil ecological functions and nutrient balance. However, the effects of co-exposure to glyphosate and urea on this process have remained unclear. This study investigated the impact of co-exposure to glyphosate (10 mg/kg) and urea (260.87 or 347.83 mg/kg, equivalent to 180 or 240 kg N/ha) on soil nitrogen cycling through a 98-day incubation experiment. Soil nutrients, enzyme activities, bacterial community structure, and functional genes were analyzed. NH 4 + -N and NO 3 - -N contents significantly decreased by 44.70–53.43 % and 36.74–49.12 %, respectively. Co-exposure reduced bacterial diversity and altered nitrogen cycling genes, decreasing nifH while increasing amoA and nosZ , indicating reduced nitrogen input potential and increased inorganic nitrogen loss. Enzyme analysis confirmed excessive activation of nitrification and denitrification, lowering nitrogen availability. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) showed co-exposure indirectly decreased NH 4 + -N and NO 3 - -N via enhanced nitrate and nitrite reductase activities. The study highlights the complex interactions between herbicides and fertilizers in soil environments and underscores the need for further research to understand the implications for wider soil health and crop production in agriculture systems.

The heterotrophic denitrification requires the participation of electrons which are derived from direct electron donor (usually nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH)), and the electrons are transferred via electron transport system in denitrifiers and then consumed by denitrifying enzymes. Despite the reported electron transfer ability of humic substances (HS), the influences of fulvic acid (FA), an ubiquitous major component of HS, on promoting NADH generation, electron transfer, and consumption in denitrification process have never been reported. The presence of FA, compared with the control, was found not only significantly improved the total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiency (99.9 % versus 74.8 %) but remarkably reduced the nitrite accumulation (0.2 against 43.8 mg/L) and N 2 O emission (0.003 against 0.240 mg nitrogen/mg TN removed). The mechanisms study showed that FA increased the metabolism of carbon source via glycolysis and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle pathways to produce more available NADH. FA also facilitated the electron transfer activities from NADH to denitrifying enzymes via complex I and complex III in electron transport system, which improved the reduction of nitrate and accelerated the transformations of nitrite and N 2 O, and lower nitrite and N 2 O accumulations were therefore observed. In addition, the consumption of electrons in denitrification was enhanced due to FA stimulating the synthesis and the catalytic activity of key denitrifying enzymes, especially nitrite reductase and N 2 O reductase. It will provide an important new insight into the potential effect of FA on microbial denitrification metabolism process and even nitrogen cycle in nature niches.

Pesticide residues in riparian zones have attracted much attention in recent decades. Their accumulations potentially deteriorate microbial activity and disturb nitrogen cycle in riparian sediments. In this study, the short-term effects of chlorothalonil (CTN, a common pesticide) on microbial denitrification were explored in riparian sediments at three levels (5, 10 and 25 mg kg −1 ). No significant differences were observed between control and 5 mg kg −1 treatment; however, CTN in 10 and 25 mg kg −1 treatments deteriorated sediment health condition and microbial activity. High concentrations of CTN also significantly decreased denitrification rates ( 15 N pairing method) by 37–62%, but increased N 2 O emission in riparian sediments by 100–285%. Our data further revealed that CTN inhibited key enzyme activities responsible for microbial metabolism, and declined electron donor (NADH) and energy source (ATP) levels during denitrification. Key denitrifying enzyme activities were also suppressed by CTN, which explained the declined denitrification process and the elevated N 2 O emission. Additionally, high-throughput sequencing and quantitative-PCR analysis showed that CTN didn’t remarkably change microbial community structures and denitrifying gene abundances after short-term exposure. Overall, this study highlights that riparian pesticides could impact nitrogen cycle of the interface between terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems , potentially accelerating water pollution and global climate change.

The widespread application of metal-based nanoparticle (MNPs)/reduced graphene oxide (rGO) composites inevitably leads to their release into soils. However, we lack a detailed understanding of the bacterial community response to MNPs-rGO exposure in farmland soils. Here, we conducted a soil microcosm experiment to analyze the potential impact of MNPs-rGO on bacterial communities in two field soils via high-throughput sequencing. The change in alpha diversity of bacterial communities was more susceptible to Ag-rGO and ZnO-rGO treatments than CuO-rGO. In both soils, MNPs-rGO significantly changed the bacterial community structure even at a low dose (1 mg kg −1 ). The bacterial community structure was most strongly affected by Ag-rGO at 30 days, but the greatest changes occurred in ZnO-rGO at 60 days. The differences in soil properties could shape bacterial communities to MNPs-rGO exposure. Distance-based redundancy analysis and functional annotation of prokaryotic taxa showed that some bacterial species associated with nitrogen cycling were greatly influenced by Ag-rGO and ZnO-rGO exposure. In sum, Ag-rGO and ZnO-rGO may potentially affect bacterial communities and nitrogen turnover under long-term realistic field exposure. These findings present a perspective on the response of bacterial communities to MNPs-rGO and provide a fundamental basis for estimating the ecological behavior of MNPs-rGO.

Anaerobic ammonium oxidation coupled to ferric iron reduction (Feammox) has been assumed to play an important role in nitrogen removal from ecosystems. This study assessed the potential role of Feammox in nitrogen transformation in eutrophic lake sediment using an isotope tracing technique in sediment slurry incubation experiments. Feammox was discovered in eutrophic lake sediment. A significant correlation was found between Feammox rates and iron-reducing rates. Furthermore, the positive correlations between the abundance of iron-reducing bacteria (FeRB), such as Geobacteraceae spp. and Shewanella spp., and Feammox rates indicate that Feammox was mediated by FeRB. The potential rate of Feammox in the isotopic tracer incubation treatment was 0.23–0.43 mg N kg −1 day −1 . The estimated nitrogen loss caused by Feammox accounts for 5.0–9.2% of the human-induced N input annually into the eutrophic lake. Feammox alone or coupled with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) and/or denitrification may have an essential role in the nitrogen cycle within eutrophic lake sediment.

Mutual transformations of various nitrogen compounds and their reaction mechanisms have been a subject of great concern to the chemical, ecological and environmental communities. In the paper, the reactions of NO 3 - ion with small organic acids such as formic acid (HCOOH), acetic acid (CH 3 COOH) and lactic acid (C 3 H 6 O 3 ) under ultraviolet illumination were investigated systematically. It was found that NO 3 - ion is easily reduced into NO 2 - and NO x and then further into N 2 and NH 3 (in the form of NH 4 + ) in the process. The carboxyl anion radicals and hydrogen formed by photodecomposition of formic acid are responsible for the rapid photoreduction reaction of nitrate. The initial pH and the nitrate concentration considerably affect the product distribution and nitrate conversion. Based on a preliminary simulation study, we speculated that the photoinduced reaction may effectively proceed in oceans, lakes and rivers because of ever-increasing nitrate and organic emissions. This research is helpful to understand nitrogen cycle mechanism and develop water environmental control technologies.

Salinity is considered a major factor influencing nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions from biochemical treatment of high-salinity wastewater, but its mechanism has not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we investigated the effects of salinity on N 2 O emissions under aerobic conditions. As salinity rose from 0.66 % to 3.66 %, N 2 O emission flux first increased and then decreased, while the emission factor (EF) consistently increased, likely due to significant inhibition of nitrification at 3.66 % salinity. Nitrogen‑oxygen dual isotope labeling experiments demonstrated that the dominant N 2 O production pathway shifted with salinity: from nitrifier nitrification (NN, 36.07 %–40.97 %) at low salinity (0.66 %, 1.66 %), to nitrification-coupled denitrification (NCD, 51.67 %) at 2.66 %, and to nitrifier denitrification (ND, up to 80.81 %) at the salinity of 3.66 %. From the changes in bacterial relative abundances and expressions of 4 key functional genes ( amoA , hao , nor , and nosZ ) revealed by metatranscriptomic sequencing, Nitrosomonas , unclassified Rhodospirillales , and Nitrospira were identified as key contributors to NN, NCD, and ND pathways, respectively, as salinity increased. We also found that the differential expressed genes and metabolites involved in energy metabolism, oxidative phosphorylation, and metabolism of amino acids, pyrimidines, and nucleotides may affect N-cycling bacteria, thereby influencing nitrogen conversion and salinity tolerance as well. This study sheds light on nitrification process in response to salinity stress and offers insights for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from high-salinity wastewater treatment.

Nitrogen pollution causes eutrophication and algal blooms worldwide. Algae-derived organic sulfides can interact with organisms to affect nitrogen cycling, but the associated patterns and mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated the effects of dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSP), an important bioactive sulfide, on nitrogen transformation and removal at the water–sediment interface in microcosm systems (water–sediment and water–sediment–biofilm–benthos). Results showed that DMSP altered the dynamics of total nitrogen and dissolved inorganic nitrogen in overlying water, particularly promoting 74.39% reduction of nitrate in the system containing biofilm and benthos. The presence of DMSP in conjunction with biofilm and bioturbation affected the nitrogen transformation in the sediment. DMSP increased the content of dissolved organic carbon but decreased the content of dissolved oxygen in water. Moreover, it was converted to sulfate in water, enhancing the abundance of bacteria capable of denitrification and sulfur oxidation (such as Pseudomonas) as well as related genes, including narGHI, norBC, soxA, soxC, soxY, and soxZ, in the biofilm. This observation suggests that the process of sulfur oxidation promotes denitrification. The current study highlights the potential applications of DMSP in water purification systems and presents a novel biological approach to aquatic management.

Electrocatalytic reduction of nitrate (NO3–) to ammonia (NH3) (NO3RR) coupled with NH3 separation represents a sustainable approach to mitigate nitrate pollution and recycle nitrogen from contaminated water. Nevertheless, this process is deemed impractical for contaminated natural water bodies owing to the limited presence of NO3––N (<50 mg L–1) and electrolytes and the relative abundance of scaling ions (Mg2+ and Ca2+). Furthermore, copper (Cu), as the primary NO3RR catalyst, generally suffers from NO2– accumulation and a prevalence of side hydrogen evolution. Herein, we develop an integrated system comprising sections of NO3– enrichment and NO3RR and NH3 collection, alongside a single-atom Cu-bearing CeO2 catalyst (Cu1/CeO2) for NO3RR. With this system, diluted NO3– is extracted from contaminated water using anion-exchange resins and then released into a concentrated NaCl aqueous solution, providing a solution with ample NO3––N (∼822 mg L–1) and electrolytes (∼1.7 M NaCl) while being free of scaling ions. Within this solution, the Cu1/CeO2 demonstrates an exceptional high and steady NH3–N production rate of 7.8 gNH3–N gCu–1 h–1, an NH3–N selectivity of 90.1%, and a Faradaic efficiency of 91.3%, outperforming the Cu nanoparticles (1.8 gNH3–N gCu–1 h–1, 46.3%, and 53.0%). In situ experiments and theoretical computations reveal a dual-site NO3RR mechanism involving the electron-deficient Cu1 site and adjacent oxygen vacancies, which collaborate to promote NO3– adsorption and lower conversion barrier while inhibiting hydrogen evolution. Finally, we implemented the integrated system along the Yangtze River, achieving nitrate elimination and nitrogen recycling with a competitive energy consumption of 1.36–1.54 kW h molN–1.

Phenanthrene (PHE) is frequently detected in worldwide soils. But it is still not clear that how the microbial community succession happens and the nitrogen-cycling processes alter during PHE degradation. In this study, the temporal changes of soil microbial community composition and nitrogen-cycling processes during the biodegradation of PHE (12 μg g −1 ) were explored. The results showed that the biodegradation of PHE followed the second-order kinetics with a half-life of 7 days. QPCR results demonstrated that the bacteria numbers increased by 67.1%–194.7% with PHE degradation, whereas, no significant change was observed in fungi numbers. Thus, high-throughput sequencing based on 16 S rRNA was conducted and showed that the abundances of Methylotenera , Comamonadaceae , and Nocardioides involved in PHE degradation and denitrification were significantly increased, while those of nitrogen-metabolism-related genera such as Nitrososphaeraceae , Nitrospira , Gemmatimonadacea were decreased in PHE-treated soil. Co-occurrence network analysis suggested that more complex interrelations were constructed, and Proteobacteria instead of Acidobacteriota formed intimate associations with other microbes in responding to PHE exposure. Additionally, the abundances of nif H and nar G were significantly up-regulated in PHE-treated soil, while that of amo A especially AOA amo A was down-regulated. Finally, correlation analysis found several potential microbes ( Methylotenera , Comamonadaceae , and Agromyces ) that could couple PHE degradation and nitrogen transformation. This study confirmed that PHE could alter microbial community structure, change the native bacterial network, and disturb nitrogen-cycling processes.

Cadmium (Cd) is the most concerning soil pollutant , and a threat to human health, especially in China. The in-situ immobilization of Cadmium by amendments is one of the most widely adopted methods to remedy soil contamination. The study was designed to evaluate the effect of organo-chemical amendments on soil Cd bioavailability and nitrogen cycling microbes under continuous planting of rice ( Oryza sativa ) and pak choi ( Brassica chinensis L. ). The experiment was carried out using four amendments, Lime, Zeolite, Superphosphate , and Biochar, at two different ratios; M1: at the ratio of 47:47:5:1, and M2 at the ratio of 71:23:5:1, respectively. Moreover, both M1 and M2 were enriched at four levels (T1: 0.5%; T2: 1%; T3: 2%; T4: 4%). Results showed that compared with CK (Cd enriched soils), the yield of rice under treatments of M1T1 and M2T1 increased by 8.93% and 8.36%, respectively. While the biomass (fresh weight) of pak choi under M1 and M2 amendments increased by 2.52–2.98 times and 0.76–2.89 times respectively, under enrichment treatments T1, T2, and T3. The total Cd concentrations in rice grains treated with M1T3 and M2T3 decreased by 89.25% and 93.16%, respectively, compared with CK. On the other hand, the total Cd concentrations in pak choi under M1T3 and M2T2 decreased by 92.86% and 90.23%, respectively. The results showed that soil pH was the main factor affecting Cd bioavailability in rice and pak choi. The Variance partitioning analysis (VPA) of rice and pak choi showed that soil pH was the most significant contributing factor. In the rice season, the contribution of soil pH (P) on Cd bioavailability was 10.14% (P = 0.102), and in the pak choi season, the contribution of soil pH was 8.38% (P = 0.133). Furthermore, the abundance of ammonia oxidation and denitrifying microorganisms had significantly correlation with soil pH and exchange Cd. In rice season, when the enrichment level of amendments increased from 0.5% (T1) to 2% (T3), the gene abundance of AOA, AOB, nirK , nirS and nosZ (І) tended to decrease. While in pak choi season, when the enrichment level increased at the level of 0.5% (T1), 1% (T2), and 2% (T3), the gene abundance of AOB, nirS, and nosZ (І) increased. Additionally, the gene abundance of AOA and nirK showed a reduction in the pak choi season contrasting to rice. And the mixed amendment M2 performed better at reducing Cd uptake than M1, which may have correlation with the ratio of lime and zeolite in them. Finally, we conclude that between these two amendments, when applied at a moderate level M2 type performed better than M1 in reducing Cd uptake, and also showed positive effects on both gene abundance and increase soil pH.

Microplastic has a significant impact on soil microbial communities, which play crucial roles in soil nitrogen (N) cycles. However, there is a limited understanding of their influences on genes associated with the entire N cycling pathways. Through a 120-day soil incubation using conventional (PE and PET) and biodegradable microplastics (PLA and PBAT), coupled with 16S rRNA and metagenomic sequencing, we investigated the responses of N-cycling genes to microplastics in two contrasting soils (i.e. black soil and loess soil). We found that biodegradable microplastics strongly altered microbial N functional profiles, and enhanced the abundance of numerous key genes involved in N fixation, organic N mineralization, N reduction, and denitrification. Furthermore, biodegradable microplastics significantly decreased net N mineralization (Nm) compared to control and conventional microplastic treatments, suggesting microbial N immobilization outweighed N mineralization. Analysis of the function-taxon bipartite network showed that the Nm was well predicted for the abundances and diversity of bacteria within specific modules, with Nm decreasing, the abundances of specific taxa in a given network modules increasing. These results indicated that biodegradable microplastics act as a carbon source to select specific taxa involved in enhancing N bioavailability (e.g., N fixation and organic N mineralization) to meet microbial N demand, which in turn filtered the bacterial community (decreased diversity but increased abundances) and gradually formed specific function-taxon modules. Comparing the two soils, microbes in the less fertile alkaline loess soil were more sensitive to biodegradable microplastics than those in the nutrient-rich acid black soil. Our study indicated that increasing usage of biodegradable plastics in the future may lead to accelerated soil microbial N limitation and transformation.
