Resource utilization of waste masks has become an urgent scientific issue. In this work, with sustainably, waste masks and biomass were co-pyrolysis with oxygen limitation to prepare mask-based biochar (MB). Then, urea was introduced to prepare novel nitrogen modified mask-based biochar (NMB) via a one-step hydrothermal synthesis method. The adsorption characteristics of NMB on the emerging environmental pollutant, bisphenol A (BPA), were evaluated via batch adsorption tests. Moreover, the physicochemical properties of the materials were characterized with various advanced techniques. Also, the roles of waste masks and nitrogen modification were explored. The adsorption mechanisms of NMB on BPA were revealed as well as the performance differences between different adsorbents. The results showed that waste masks participated in thermochemical reactions, shaped the microsphere structure of biochar, and increased the types of surface functional groups. The nitrogen modification enriched the surface elemental composition and activated the specific surface area via the mesopore. These would enhance the adsorption performance. The maximum adsorption of BPA by NMB was 62.63 mg·g −1 , which was approximately 2.35–5.58 times higher than that of the control materials. Temkin model and pseudo-second-order model optimally simulate the isothermal and kinetic adsorption, respectively. The adsorption mechanisms are jointly by physical and chemical adsorption, which mainly includes π–π interaction, hydrogen bonding, intraparticle diffusion, surface adsorption, and ion exchange. After discussion and evaluation, NMB has lower preparation process cost (7.21 USD·kg −1 ) and safety, with potential for environmental applications. This study aims to expand new ideas for the comprehensive utilization of waste masks and the preparation of eco-friendly materials. Moreover, it provides a theoretical basis for the removal of BPA.

In industry, mercury catalysts are mainly used in hydrochlorination of acetylene. However, the sublimation of mercury considerably harms human health and the environment. Therefore, the development of green catalysts is particularly demanding to eliminate the negative effects of such toxic catalysts. Based on this, we used a green, low-cost carrageenan as raw material. A nitrogen-modified carbon material was prepared by nitrogen modification using urea. Based on the reaction conditions of the catalyst dosage = 0.75 g, WHSV = 2.22 mL/g/min, temperature = 260 °C, the conversion of the nitrogen-modified catalyst was 98.7%. Various characterization methods had demonstrated that the nitrogen modification produced a large amount of nitrogen and that the nitrogen element was sufficiently dispersed in the carbon material. In addition, identification of the appropriate annealing temperature greatly improved the adsorption catalytic capacity for acetylene. Therefore, an environmentally friendly non-metallic catalyst was developed, which also providing essential feedback for future industrial development.

Fe-N-modified activated carbons (ACs) were prepared from bamboo shoot shells (BSS) by potassium ferrate activation for arsenic adsorption. BSS provided abundant nitrogen and carbon sources for ACs, while potassium ferrate significantly improved the pore volume and specific surface area (SSA), but also loaded iron particles. The highest SSA of AC was 1900 m 2 /g, with the iron content of 4.54–6.52% and nitrogen content of 2.88–3.35%. Based on the arsenic adsorption capacity, the optimized manufacturing process was activation temperature of 800 °C, activation time of 120 min, and activator ratio of 3.5. The optimized AC exhibited excellent arsenic adsorption performance and the maximum adsorption capacity was 9.18 mg/g. The good magnetism of AC was beneficial to recovery and reuse. The adsorption capability retention was still more than 50% after reusing for five times. This work showed that BSS had great potential for commercial development, and also provided a cost-effective production way for arsenic adsorbents.

A series of cobalt-nitrogen modified catalysts were prepared and applied to the degradation of phenol . The Mott Schottky catalyst (CoO/NGr@C) with high pyridine nitrogen content was designed to activate potassium peroxodisulfate (PDS) to generate active free radicals for phenol degradation. The structural properties of the materials are analyzed by XPS , TEM and then the charge density calculation is performed by DFT, which proves the existence of the highly active interface effect. Co–N-C MCM-41 can only degrade phenol into benzoquinone and it is difficult to achieve further degradation of benzoquinone, while the modified CoO/NGr@C can achieve deep mineralization of the intermediate benzoquinone through UV spectrum. EPR was used to prove that both hydroxyl radicals and sulfate radicals exist in the degradation process of phenol. Through the DFT simulation calculation of the material, it is proved that the existence of carbon activated by nitrogen and the electron rearrangement between cobalt and nitrogen-rich carbon lead to the catalytic activity of the material. The degradation conditions of phenol were optimized and the reaction kinetics of further phenol degradation were studied. The activation energy of phenol degradation on CoO/NGr@C is calculated to be 34.38 kJ mol −1 .
