Metal chlorides-promoted ammonia absorption of deep eutectic solvent

Xiaoxue Sun,Qinghua Wang,Shenghan Wu,Xinyu Zhao,Ligang Wei,Kunlan Li,Jingai Hao,Li Wei,Shangru Zhai,Qingda An

Ammonia is considered as a promising hydrogen or energy carrier. Ammonia absorption or adsorption is an important aspect for both ammonia removal, storage and separation applications. To these ends, a wide range of solid and liquid sorbents have been investigated. Among these, the deep eutectic solvent (DES) is emerging as a promising class of ammonia absorbers. Herein, we report a novel type of DES, i.e. , metal-containing DESs for ammonia absorption. Specifically, the NH 3 absorption capacity is enhanced by ca. 18.1–36.9% when a small amount of metal chlorides , such as MgCl 2 , MnCl 2 etc. , are added into a DES composed of resorcinol (Res) and ethylene glycol (EG). To our knowledge, the MgCl 2 /Res/EG (0.1:1:2) DES outperforms most of the reported DESs. The excellent NH 3 absorption performances of metal–containing DESs have been attributed to the synergy of Lewis acid–base and hydrogen bonding interactions. Additionally, good reversibility and high NH 3 /CO 2 selectivity are achieved over the MgCl 2 /Res/EG (0.1:1:2) DES, which enables it to be a potential NH 3 absorber for further investigations.

Enhanced Adsorption of Neonicotinoids by MnCl₂ and H₃PO₄ Co-Modified Corn Stover Biochar: Performance and Mechanism Analysis

Jun Tu,Qiuru Chen,Siyu Ke,Xiaohui Yi,Yiquan Qiu,Ziyi Lin,Shuxiang Yang,Xinzhi Wang,Xiaotong Bai,Mingzhi Huang

In this study, corn stover biochar was prepared and modified with manganese (II) chloride (MnCl 2 ) and phosphoric acid (H 3 PO 4 ) to investigate the adsorption performance and mechanism of neonicotinoids represented by clothianidin (CLO). MnCl 2 promotes pore formation in biomass and enhances activation efficiency, while H 3 PO 4 boosts the specific surface area and adsorption capacity of the product. These properties make them widely used in biomass activation. The modified biochar (Mn-P-BC) exhibited an adsorption capacity of 11.5   mg·L -1 for CLO, representing a 2.8-fold enhancement compared to unmodified biochar (BC). In materials characterization, SEM and BET analysis results show that Mn-P-BC has a developed porous structure, and the surface area increases by 13.7 times compared with BC, which can provide more adsorption sites. According to the electrochemical properties, kinetics, and isotherm analyses, the adsorption mechanism for CLO was identified as involving physicochemical processes. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that Mn-P-BC was more efficient in removing CLO compared to thiamethoxam (THM) and imidacloprid (IMI). It is shown that the mechanism of interaction between Mn-P-BC and CLO mainly involves pore filling, π-π interactions, and hydrogen bonding. In summary, the co-modification of biochar with MnCl 2 and H₃PO₄ significantly improved the adsorption performance of biochar, which provided new insights into the development of adsorbents for neonicotinoid insecticide removal.

Engineering Hyaluronic Acid Microneedles Loaded with Mn2+ and Temozolomide for Topical Precision Therapy of Melanoma

Yechun Jiang,Yu Jin,Chengcheng Feng,Yayun Wu,Weinan Zhang,Liang Xiao,Zhaoyou Chu,Benjin Chen,Yan Ma,Haisheng Qian,Lingling Xu

Topical therapy has received worldwide attention for in situ tumors owing to its higher efficacy of drug delivery. Herein, this work reports a dissolvable multifunctional hyaluronic acid microneedles (HMNs) patch coloaded with temozolomide (TMZ) and MnCl 2 (TMZ/MnCl 2 @HMN) for chemoimmunotherapy of melanoma. HMNs can ensure the stability of TMZ over time, and exhibit fewer side effects with a localized release way. In particular, TMZ not only promotes dendritic cell maturation by triggering immunogenic cell death in tumor cells, but also induces DNA damage that can further enhance the Mn 2+ -activated cGAS-STING (stimulator of interferon genes pathway). As a result, the TMZ/MnCl 2 @HMN multifunctional platform significantly inhibits lung metastases for melanoma, providing a practical strategy for precision therapy of melanoma.

Low-temperature ammonia adsorption-desorption performance of Al2O3-supported, graphite-casted metal chloride pellets

Haoyu Yan,Peng Wang,Pu Huang,Cheng Shen,Jian Sun,Tao Song

Ammonia (NH 3 ) is widely recognized as a carbon-free hydrogen carrier with high energy density, making it a promising energy vector for sustainable energy systems. However, its efficient storage and release remain technical challenges. In this study, the low-temperature NH 3 adsorption-desorption performance of four pure metal chlorides (CaCl 2 , MgCl 2 , MnCl 2 , and CuCl 2 ) was systematically evaluated. Among them, CuCl 2 and MnCl 2 exhibited superior NH 3 uptake capacities, but also suffered from volume expansion and particle agglomeration during repeated cycling. To overcome these limitations, composite sorbent pellets were developed by supporting metal chlorides on Al 2 O 3 via a graphite-casting method. The resulting CuCl 2 -based composite pellet achieved an optimized balance of high NH 3 adsorption capacity (∼ 0.36  g NH 3 /g), excellent regeneration efficiency (> 96 %), and adequate mechanical strength. Excessive CuCl 2 loading reduced both regeneration efficiency and mechanical stability, while lower loading enhanced active phase dispersion and sorbent performance. 30 wt% CuCl 2 offered the best performance in terms of adsorption, regeneration, and structural durability. Additionally, the optimized Cu 30 -Al-C sorbent maintained stable NH 3 adsorption capacity over 20 cycles, confirming excellent reusability. The enhanced performance was attributed to the synergistic effects of Al 2 O 3 support and the hydrophobic nature of the graphite-casting process, which enabled uniform distribution of active compound and mitigated structural deterioration during cycling. These results demonstrate the feasibility of graphite-casted, Al 2 O 3 -supported metal chlorides as structurally stable and regenerable NH 3 sorbents for low-temperature ammonia storage applications.

Bright Mn-doped carbon dots for the determination of permanganate and L-ascorbic acid by a fluorescence on-off-on strategy

Chu Xu,Ning Gan,Zhou Zhiqiang,Liu Yi,Xiao Qi,Huang Shan

A one-pot hydrothermal synthesis of manganese-doped carbon dots (Mn-CDs) is reported for fluorescent “on-off-on” determination of Mn(VII) and L-ascorbic acid (L-AA) in aqueous solution and living cells. Mn-CDs were prepared by using sulfanilic acid, tetrakis(hydroxymethyl)phosphonium chloride, and Mn(II) chloride as precursors. Mn-CDs were characterized by several spectroscopic methods and microscopic techniques. Mn-CDs show distinctly long fluorescence lifetime (12.39 ± 0.07 ns) and high absolute fluorescence quantum yield (around 37%) with excitation and emission wavelengths of 362 and 500 nm, respectively. Mn-CDs exhibit no significant cytotoxicity to human cervical carcinoma HeLa cells and human embryonic kidney HEK-293T cells at 200 μg mL −1 level after 48 h incubation. The fluorescence of Mn-CDs at 500 nm (excited at 362 nm) is quenched efficiently by Mn(VII) and can be further recovered after the addition of L-AA, resulting in a fluorescent “on-off-on” assay for the determination of Mn(VII) and L-AA. Under optimal experimental conditions, the linear response covers the 3 to 150 μM Mn(VII) concentration range and the 3 to 140 μM L-AA concentration range. This method offers relatively low detection limits of 0.66 μM for Mn(VII) and 0.90 μM for L-AA. This strategy was applied to visual determination of Mn(VII) and L-AA in living HeLa cells with satisfying results. Schematic presentation of bright Mn-CD-based fluorescence “on-off-on” assay for both Mn(VII) and L-AA. This fluorescent assay possessed low detection limit of 0.66 μM for Mn(VII) and 0.90 μM for L-AA. This strategy was applied for visual determination of Mn(VII) and L-AA in living HeLa cells with satisfying results.

Bio-fabricated nanodrugs with chemo-immunotherapy to inhibit glioma proliferation and recurrence

Ruoning Wang,Xinru Zhang,Jianyu Huang,Kuanhan Feng,Yingjie Zhang,Jie Wu,Lei Ma,Anran Zhu,Liuqing Di

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most malignant brain tumor with high mortality. Knowledge of the stemness concept has developed recently, giving rising to a novel hallmark with therapeutic potential that can help in management of GBM recurrence and prognosis. However, limited blood-brain barrier (BBB) penetration, non-discriminatory distribution, and deficiency of diagnosis remain three major obstacles need to be overcome for further facilitating therapeutic effects. Herein, D4F and α-Melittin (a-Mel) are co-assembled to construct bio-fabricated nanoplatforms, which endowed with inherent BBB permeability, precise tumor accumulation, deep penetration, and immune activation. After carrying arsenic trioxide (ATO) and manganese dichloride (MnCl 2 ), these elaborated nanodrugs, Mel-LNPs/MnAs, gather in tumor foci by natural pathways and respond to microenvironment to synchronously release Mn 2+ and As 3+ , achieving real-time navigating-diagnosis and tumor cell proliferation inhibition. Through down regulating CD44 and CD133 expression, the GBM stemness was suppressed to overcome its high recurrence, invasion, and chemoresistance. After being combined with temozolomide (TMZ), the survival rate of GBM-bearing mice is significantly enhanced, and the rate of recurrence is powerfully limited. Collectively, this tumor-specific actuating multi-modality nanotheranostics provide a promising candidate for clinical application with high security.

Redox nanodrugs alleviate chronic kidney disease by reducing inflammation and regulating ROS

Qin Wang,Xuedan Nie,Yifan Song,Haiyan Qiu,Liting Chen,He Zhu,Xueli Zhang,Mengru Yang,Xiaohui Xu,Peidan Chen,Chao Zhang,Jia Xu,Yeping Ren,Wenting Shang

Immune-mediated glomerular diseases lead to chronic kidney disease (CKD), primarily through mechanisms such as immune cell overactivation, mitochondrial dysfunction and imbalance of reactive oxygen species (ROS). We have developed an ultra-small nanodrug composed of Mn3O4 nanoparticles which is functionalized with biocompatible ligand citrate (C-Mn3O4 NPs) to maintain cellular redox balance in an animal model of oxidative injury. Furthermore, this ultra-small nanodrug, loaded with tacrolimus (Tac), regulated the activity of immune cells. We established a doxorubicin (DOX)-induced CKD model in SD rats using conditions of oxidative distress. The results demonstrate the ROS scavenging capability of Mn3O4 NPs, which mimics enzymatic activity, and the immunosuppressive effect of tacrolimus. This combination promotes targeted accumulation in the renal region with sustained drug release through the enhanced permeability and retention (EPR) effect. Tac@C-Mn3O4 protects the structural and functional integrity of mitochondria from oxidative damage while eliminating excess ROS to maintain cellular redox homeostasis, thereby suppressing the overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines to restore kidney function and preserve a normal kidney structure, reducing inflammation and regulating antioxidant stress pathways. This dual-pronged treatment strategy also provides novel strategies for CKD management and demonstrates substantial potential for clinical translational application.

Rational design of a near-infrared dual-emission fluorescent probe for ratiometric imaging of glutathione in cells

Wang Shulong,Li Zhifang,Xu Jiayao,Lin Qingyan,Huang Wenfang,Fan Mingzhu,Wang Rong,Luo Zhihui

Sensors for which the output signal is an intensity change for a single-emission peak are easily disturbed by many factors, such as the stability of the instrument, intensity of the excitation light, and biological background. However, for ratiometric fluorescence sensors, the output signal is a change in the intensity ratio of two or more emission peaks. The fluorescence intensity of these emission peaks is similarly affected by external factors; thus, these sensors have the ability to self-correct, which can greatly improve the accuracy and reliability of the detection results. To accurately image glutathione (GSH) in cells, gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) with intrinsic double emission at wavelengths of 606 nm and 794 nm were synthesized from chloroauric acid. With the emission peak at 606 nm as the recognition signal and the emission peak at 794 nm as the reference signal, a near-infrared dual-emission ratio fluorescence sensing platform was constructed to accurately detect changes in the GSH concentration in cells. In vitro and in vivo analyses showed that the ratiometric fluorescent probe specifically detects GSH and enables ultrasensitive imaging, providing a new platform for the accurate detection of active small molecules. Pattern Recognition of Alkaloids by Inhibiting the Catalytic Activity of Dopzymes for Dopamine

Jing Zhu,Qing Hong Zhang,Wen Wu Wang

Exploiting the specific recognition probe for all of the biomolecules is difficult in “lock-and-key” biosensors. The cross-reaction or the semispecific probe in pattern recognition mode is an alternative strategy through extracting a multidimensional signal array from recognition elements. Here, we design a pattern recognition sensor array based on the alkaloid-inhibited catalytic activity of dopzymes for the discrimination and determination of six alkaloids. In this sensor array, three different G-rich sequences, i.e., G-triplex (G3), G-quadruplex (GQ1), and the G-quadruplex dimer (2GQ1) possessing various peroxidase activities, conjugated with a dopamine aptamer and the dopzymes (G3-d-apt, GQ1-d-apt, and 2GQ1-d-apt) were obtained with an enhanced catalytic performance for the substrate. Through the interactions between six target alkaloids and G3, GQ1, and 2GQ1 regions, the pattern signal (6 alkaloids × 3 dopzymes × 5 replicates) was obtained from the diverse inhibited effect for the dopzyme activity. In virtue of the statistical method principal component analysis (PCA), the data array was projected into a new dimensional space to acquire the three-dimensional (3D) canonical scores and grouped into their respective clusters. The sensor array exhibited an outstanding discrimination and classification capability for six alkaloids with different concentrations with 100% accuracy. In addition, the nonspecific recognition elements of the sensor array showed high selectivity even though other alkaloids with similar structures to targets existed in the samples. Importantly, the levels of the six targets can be analyzed by the most influential discrimination factor, which represented the vector with the highest variance, evidencing that the sensor array has potential in drug screening and clinical treatment.

Manganese MOF-derived ruthenium-doped MnxOy catalyst for enhanced oxygen evolution reaction and energy-efficient lead recovery

Xiaoyue Wang,Rajapriya Andavar,Jiahong Xie,Wenli Liu,Yanzhi Sun,Yongmei Chen,Yang Tang,Pingyu Wan,Junqing Pan

Advanced, efficient, and eco-friendly technologies are essential for the safe recycling of spent lead-acid batteries for minimizing their environmental impact by mitigating toxic wastes and promoting resource sustainability by recovering valuable lead. Herein, we proposed a simple, zero-emission electrochemical strategy to recover metallic lead via the direct electrolysis of lead-acid batteries. MnxOy@RuO2 with a layered structure of stacked nanosheets was prepared via facile hydrothermal and annealing methods. MnxOy@RuO2 exhibited low overpotentials of 175 mV and 248 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 0.5 mol L−1 H2SO4 and Pb(MSA)2, respectively, showcasing its excellent OER activity. Notably, the catalyst exhibited excellent stability for over 10 hours. The MnxOy@RuO2 catalyst during constant current electrolysis required an overpotential of only 375.6 mV at 25 mA cm−2 to function, greatly reducing the precipitation of PbO2. MnxOy@RuO2 facilitated high-efficiency oxygen evolution reaction using the lead MSA electrolyte, suppressing the PbO2 formation and reducing the anode overpotential, making it an ideal anode material for energy-efficient lead recovery.

Atomically-dispersed manganese anchored on B,N co-doped carbon for the sensitive electrochemical detection of levodopa

Fan Wang,Junhua Li,Xiangxiong Chen,Hao Feng,Huiyang Liao,Jinlong Liu,Dong Qian,Geoffrey I.N. Waterhouse

Metal single-atom catalysts offer the dual advantages of high electrochemical activity and near 100 % metal atom utilization, leading to their potential use in low-cost electrochemical sensor development. Herein, a novel electrocatalyst comprising atomically-dispersed Mn on B,N co-doped bamboo-derived carbon (MnSAs-BN-BC) was synthesized via a facile pyrolysis procedure. A high dispersion of Mn single atoms in MnSAs-BN-BC was confirmed by aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy and elemental mapping. The Mn loading in the MnSAs-BN-BC determined by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was 255 mg kg −1 . MnSAs-BN-BC displayed outstanding electrocatalytic performance for levodopa (LD) oxidation, allowing a robust electrochemical sensing platform for LD detection to be established. The MnSAs-BN-BC/GCE sensing platform offered a wide LD detection range (concentrations from 2 to 683 µM) and a very low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.45 µM, outperforming almost all electrochemical sensors reported to date for LD sensing. The MnSAs-BN-BC/GCE platform also featured outstanding repeatability, reproducibility, selectivity, and stability. The as-developed sensing platform was successfully applied to LD quantification in commercial tablets with satisfactory recoveries (85.2–102.4 %), with the analytical precision of method validated against a traditional UV–vis spectrophotometry method. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations showed that Mn single atom sites lowered the reaction energy barrier for LD oxidation, with the favorable d-band center position of Mn single atom sites in MnSAs-BN-BC contributing to the enhanced LD sensing performance. This work encourages the use of single-atom metal catalysts in design of high-performance electrochemical sensors for the rapid detection of LD.

Atomic Insights into the Heterogeneous Crystallization of Manganese (Oxyhydr)oxides on Typical Iron (Oxyhydr)oxides: from Adsorption to Oxidation to Crystallization

Shouhao Tong,Hongyan Wei,Junming Zhou,Yixuan Yang,Runliang Zhu,Qingze Chen,Xiande Xie,Qing Hu,Michael F. Hochella Jr.,Jing Liu

Heterogeneous crystallization of manganese (oxyhydr)oxides (MnOx) on iron (oxyhydr)oxides (FeOx) is crucial for the biogeochemical cycling of Mn, yet atomic-level insights into this process are important but relatively limited. Herein, we revealed the distinct adsorption, oxidation, and crystallization mechanisms of Mn on hematite (Hem), ferrihydrite (Fhy), and goethite (Gth). Gth exhibited highest ability in Mn(II) removal and oxidation, followed by Hem and Fhy. Manganite and hausmannite were the main MnOx products with distinct proportions, and morphologies cross the systems. MnOx growth mechanisms involve surface-induced nucleation, crystallization by particle attachment (CPA), and self-catalyzed growth. On Fhy, self-catalyzed growth was dominant; for Gth, surface-induced nucleation was prevalent, supplemented by CPA; and Hem combined all three mechanisms. These distinct mechanisms led to nanoparticles primarily of hausmannite on Gth and nanowires of manganite and hausmannite on Hem and Fhy, with those on Hem displaying lower aspect ratios. Differences in MnOx structure and morphology were attributed to Mn(II)-FeOx complexation, FeOx electronic band structure, and crystal structure mismatch between MnOx and FeOx, which respectively influenced the direct and indirect electron transfer and heterogeneous nucleation efficiency. This work advances our understanding of MnOx crystallization on FeOx at the nanoscale, explaining the diverse morphology and structure of MnOx in different environments.
