Facile fabrication of electrospun fluorescent graphene nanofiber layer in epoxy coating towards efficient corrosion degree evaluation

Peng Wang,Jingjing Zhang,Guangxu Zhao,Feng Hong,Hai Lin

Electrospun fluorescent graphene/polyacrylonitrile (R-AMG/PAN)(R-AMG was prepared by acid-modified graphene loaded with rare earth complexes.) and fluorescent graphite/chitosan/polyacrylonitrile (R-AMG/CS/PAN) membranes were incorporated into epoxy resin to develop a smart coating with fluorescence responsiveness to chloride ions (Cl − ), and a comprehensive comparison of both coatings was conducted to assess their ability for corrosion protection and early corrosion monitoring during salt spray testing. Fluorescent graphene is a source for detecting the corrosion behavior of coatings. The use of electrostatic spinning technology significantly enhances the fluorescent properties of graphene. Additionally, the fiber structure enhances the barrier properties of the coating. The work provides a meaningful strategy for the design of intelligent protective materials.

Degradation behavior and self-healing mechanism of force-Cl- triggered microcapsule/ cementitious composites

Yanxuan Ma,Shuaifei Wang,Meiyu Li,Gongbin Wang,Jiatong Liu,Yuhua Gao,Peng Wang,Zhipeng Zhang

The performance of microcapsules in terms of “chloride response” and their electrochemical remediation mechanism is investigated. Electrochemical testing methods are used, i.e., kinetic potential polarization and electrochemical impedance testing. The variation rules of corrosion behavior of self-healing cementitious composites with different contents of microcapsules, both intact and pre-damaged, were investigated in a chloride ion environment. Based on this, the equivalent circuit change model is established. By fitting the parameters of the circuit elements, the change rule of the fitted parameters of the circuit elements is derived. To analyze the internal changes of self-healing cementitious composites in the corrosion process, and to reveal the self-healing mechanism of self-healing cementitious composites on the protective effect of its internal steel reinforcement. It was shown that the corrosion current density could be reduced as low as 0.87 μA/cm 2 for the intact samples immersed for 3 days and as low as 1.95 μA/cm 2 for damaged samples. The self-healing cementitious composites remained protective of the internal reinforcement after 56 days of immersion; Studies on the electrochemical self-healing mechanism have shown that microcapsules improve corrosion protection based on increasing the electrical resistivity of cementitious composites. The addition of 9 wt% microcapsules provided up to 39.16 % restoration efficiency at 56 days of immersion, and the restoration efficiency increased to up to 55.62 % in response to the combination of cracks and chloride ions. The microcapsules act together through mechanical and chloride ion response to retard the corrosion rate of steel reinforcement inside the self-healing cementitious composite by protecting the reinforcement passivation film.

Dual-trigger microcapsules for autonomous crack healing in marine concrete: Synergistic response to mechanical stress and chloride ions

Zhenxing Du,Chenglong Li,Penggang Wang,Zuquan Jin,Li Tian,Aoshen Wang,Min Zhang

To overcome limitations of single-trigger self-healing systems, this study developed microcapsules (MCs) responsive to both mechanical stress and chloride ions for marine concrete repair. Ethyl cellulose/nano-silica shells encapsulating epoxy resin were synthesized via solvent evaporation method, with PbSO 4 embedded for chloride activation. MCs exhibited optimal size (70–120 μm), thermal stability (>190 °C), and homogeneous PbSO 4 distribution. Increasing PbSO 4 content enhanced chloride responsiveness, forming pores that released healing agent via osmotic pressure, while improving MC stiffness. Additionally, the self-healing mortars demonstrate notable strength recovery, with the highest healing rate of 126.30 % under standard curing and 114.50 % under seawater curing, reflecting the MCs' robust performance in aggressive environments. Cracks up to 229.7 μm width were effectively healed within 7 days, with healing efficiency positively correlating with PbSO 4 content. The porosity reduction rate rose with the increase in PbSO4 dosage, reducing porosity by 9.42 %–26.71 % post-healing. Additionally, MC significantly enhanced the chloride ion permeability resistance of self-healing mortars, achieving a reduction rate of 67.37 %–84.90 %. This d ual-trigger system provides targeted, efficient self-healing for marine concrete infrastructure, significantly enhancing durability.

Corrosion protection of Aluminium Alloy 2024 through an epoxy coating embedded with smart microcapsules: The responses of smart microcapsules to corrosive entities

Miaomiao Cui,Demian I. Njoku,Bowen Li,Lihui Yang,Zuankai Wang,Baorong Hou,Ying Li

This article employed a layer-by-layer approach to modify the interfacial boundary of halloysite clay nanotubes (HNTs) using (poly (diallyldimethylammonium chloride)) (PDDA) and poly (styrene sulfonate) (PSS) polyelectrolytes to form core (inhibitor-loaded HNTs)-shell (polyelectrolytes layers (PDDA/PSS)) structured smart microcapsules or micro-containers. Responses of the smart microcapsules to changes in pH (H + ), Cl − , OH − and H 2 O during the release of the loaded inhibitor (2-mecaptobenzothiazole inhibitor (2-MBT)) coupled with the number of PDDA/PSS polyelectrolytes layers ( n ) required to obtain optimal response were characterized. The anticorrosion efficacies of several organic compounds were screened to identify the most suitable inhibitor for the protection of Al alloy 2024 in 3.5 wt.% NaCl. 2-MBT which exhibits the best inhibition efficiency was successfully loaded into the HNTs lumen as demonstrated by TGA and DSC results. The release profiles of 2-MBT reveal that the sensitivity of the smart microcapsules to the various external stimuli decreased in the following order: pH > Cl − > H 2 O > OH − ; and three-layered polyelectrolyte (3n) displays the highest sensitivity amongst the studied layer numbers (n). The release profiles were fitted to the Pappas and Weibull's models which describe the release mechanisms. Compatibility of the smart microcapsules with epoxy coating coupled with the anticorrosion effect on Al alloy 2024 substrate were evaluated by means of long-term salt spray and immersion tests.
