Electrochemistry assisted chlorine corrosion strategy: The minute-level fabrication of lattice Cl– functioned high spin-polarized Ni/Fe-LDH array for enhanced anti-Cl– OER performance

Bo Zhang,Ru Xiao,Liyuan Liu,Xiaobin Liu,Ying Deng,Qingliang Lv,Zexing Wu,Yunmei Du,Yanyan Li,Zhenyu Xiao,Lei Wang

Although the intermittent energy-driven direct seawater splitting technology provides an unparalleled approach to achieving sustainable development, the severe corrosion via aggressive Cl – severely affects the stability and efficiency of the anode catalyst and limits its industrial application. Herein, a lattice Cl – functioned NiFe-LDH electrode (E-NF-LDH Cl or E-NF-LDH SW ) is firstly constructed by a minute-level electrochemistry assisted chlorine corrosion strategy, which presents enhanced oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance and excellent anti-Cl – corrosion behavior for seawater splitting. The optimized E-NF-LDH Cl and E-NF-LDH SW deliver low OER overpotential of 355 and 384 mV to reach 1 A cm −2 current density in the 1 mol L –1 KOH and 1 mol L –1 KOH seawater, respectively, as well as excellent stability of E-NF-LDH Cl is maintained at 1 A cm –2 for 400 h in the 1 mol L –1 KOH and 1 mol L –1 KOH + 0.5 mol L –1 NaCl. MD (molecular dynamics) simulation and DFT (density functional theory) calculation confirmed that strong common-ion repulsion effect in IHP region repels free Cl – , forming high spin polarization centers and more single electrons to enhance the intrinsic activity of OER.

Multiscale Engineering of Nonprecious Metal Electrocatalyst for Realizing Ultrastable Seawater Splitting in Weakly Alkaline Solution

Jiankun Li,Tingting Yu,Keyu Wang,Zhiheng Li,Juan He,Yixing Wang,Linfeng Lei,Linzhou Zhuang,Minghui Zhu,Cheng Lian,Zongping Shao,Zhi Xu

Seawater electrolysis is an attractive technique for mass production of high-purity hydrogen considering the abundance of seawater. Nevertheless, due to the complexity of seawater environment, efficient anode catalyst, that should be, cost effective, highly active for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) but negligible for Cl 2 /ClO – formation, and robust toward chlorine corrosion, is urgently demanded for large-scale application. Although catalysis typically appears at surface, while the bulk properties and morphology structure also have a significant impact on the performance, thus requiring a systematic optimization. Herein, a multiscale engineering approach toward the development of cost-effective and robust OER electrocatalyst for operation in seawater is reported. Specifically, the engineering of hollow-sphere structure can facilitate the removal of gas product, while atom-level synergy between Co and Fe can promote Co sites transforming to active phase, and in situ transformation of sulfate ions layer protects catalysts from corrosion. As a result, the as-developed hollow-sphere structured CoFeS x electrocatalyst can stably operate at a high current density of 100 mA cm –2 in the alkaline simulated seawater (pH = 13) for 700 h and in a neutral seawater for 20 h without attenuation. It provides a new strategy for the development of electrocatalysts with a broader application potential.

Pre-introduced carbon dots on anode prior to nickel-iron layered double hydroxide growth for stable seawater splitting

Yong Wang,Ziming Zhao,Wenhao Li,Su Zhan,Feng Zhou

Electrocatalytic seawater splitting is a promising technology for sustainable hydrogen production, but its practical application is hindered by the sluggish oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics and corrosion from the chloride ions (Cl − ). Here, a strategy of pre-modifying the anode with carbon dots (CDs) before growing nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) is reported to improve its activity and stability in seawater (B-CDs/NiFe LDH). The introduced CDs can efficiently activate high-valent Fe sites and electrostatically repel Cl − to protect the nickel foam substrate. Compared to post-modification of CDs, this strategy reduces CDs dosage by 80 %, while achieving comparable OER performance. The synthesized B-CDs/NiFe LDH exhibits an overpotential of 349 mV at 100 mA cm −2 under alkaline seawater conditions, with electrocatalytic stability over 150 h. This work not only presents a viable approach to the fabrication of noble metal-free anodes for stable seawater electrolysis, but also provides theoretical guidance for the subsequent design of such electrode materials.

Stable and efficient seawater splitting on a porous phosphate-intercalated NiFe (oxy)hydroxide@NiMoO4 core-shell micropillar electrode

Chen Yang,Nannan Gao,Xilong Wang,Jiajia Lu,Lijuan Cao,Yadong Li,Han-Pu Liang

Seawater splitting powered by solar or wind sources is a significant renewable energy storage technology for the production of green hydrogen energy. However, both the chlorine evolution reaction and chloride corrosion are intractable issues in seawater splitting. Here, a porous electrode based on a phosphate-intercalated NiFe (oxy)hydroxide shell coated on a nickel molybdate (NiMoO4) micropillar core (denoted as P-NiFe@NiMoO4) is synthesized through an electrochemical oxidation strategy. During the electrochemical oxidation process, the etching of MoO2 promotes the reconstruction of NiFe (oxy)hydroxide and the formation of porous structures in an alkaline solution. The optimized P-NiFe@NiMoO4 electrocatalysts afford a low overpotential of 258 mV at a current density of 100 mA/cm2 in alkaline seawater. By pairing the anode with a cathode of as-synthesized P-NiMoO, the electrolyzer presents a low voltage of 1.63 V at 100 mA/cm2 in alkaline seawater with excellent stability. Moreover, the remarkable stability of the anode seems to be attributed to the in-situ phosphate formed during the electrochemical oxidation process to passivate chloride corrosion.

Dynamic Migration of Ag Efficiently Modulated Electronic Structure and Impressed Chlorine Corrosion of NiFe-LDH for Seawater Oxidation

Yongping Qu,Huajun Zhou,Yuzhen Zhang,Peihua Zhao,Kai Yuan,Rui Zhou,Hui Gao,Yanzhong Wang

Seawater electrolysis is a promising route for hydrogen production. However, the elevated concentration of Cl − in seawater can cause the serious corrosion of electrode materials, which limits the large-scale application of seawater splitting for the generation of green hydrogen. Herein, nickel iron layered double hydroxide@Ag/iron foam (NiFe-LDH@Ag/IF) composites are synthesized using a two-step method at room temperature. The introduction of Ag not only induces the electron density redistribution of NiFe-LDH to promote the formation of NiFeOOH as the catalytically active sites, but also impress the corrosion of chloride ions during the seawater oxidation. The as-prepared NiFe-LDH@Ag/IF only requires a low overpotential of 255 mV at a current density of 500 mA cm −2 in alkaline solution, and it can stably operate for 1000 h without degradation. Importantly, the formed AgCl nanoparticles loaded on the surface of NiFe-LDH nanosheets can effectively prevent the corrosive effect of Cl − during the seawater oxidation process. Thus, NiFe-LDH@Ag/IF can maintain high catalytic activity and work stably for 1000 h at high current density of 500 mA cm −2 for seawater oxidation. This study presents a simple method for preparing self-supported electrocatalysts with excellent corrosion resistance and high catalytic activity in alkaline seawater oxidation.
