Superior performance and mechanism of chlorobenzene degradation by a novel bacterium

Shihan Zhang,Zanyun Ying,Juping You,Jiexu Ye,Zhuowei Cheng,Dongzhi Chen,Jianmeng Chen

A newly isolated strain was identified as Ochrobactrum sp. by 16S rRNA sequence analysis and named as ZJUTCB-1. The strain was able to degrade mono-chlorobenzene (CB) as the sole carbon and energy source under aerobic conditions. This study is the first to report the degradation of CB by the genus Ochrobactrum. The degradation rate of CB reached 170.9 μmol L−1 h−1, which is at least 6 times higher than the previously reported data. The strain can efficiently degrade CB under a rang of temperatures (30–40 °C) and pH (6.0–7.0) with optimum at 40 °C and pH 7.0. Salt concentration higher than 0.05 mol L−1 remarkably reduced the biodegradation capability. Moreover, true oxic condition was not an essential element for biodegradation given that the CB degradation rate of 210.4 μmol L−1 h−1 was obtained under microaerobic condition. Based on the Haldane kinetic model, the maximum specific growth rate was 0.895 h−1, which is the highest in ever described CB-degrading strains. According to GC-MS analysis and enzymatic assay, CB was degraded via the meta-cleavage pathway by using 2,3-dioxygenase and 2-chlorophenol as the main intermediates, producing CO2 and Cl− as the final products. The great performance of CB degradation by Ochrobactrum sp. ZJUTCB-1 provided an alternative for development of more effective and reliable biotreatment process.

Characterization of biochar derived from rice husks and its potential in chlorobenzene degradation

Kaikai Zhang,Peng Sun,Marie Christine A.S. Faye,Yanrong Zhang

The property of biochar and its potential application toward chlorobenzene degradation were investigated in this study. The biochar was derived from rice husk and charred at 550 °C in N 2 atmosphere, which showed a significant degradation of chlorobenzene in ambient atmosphere. The results from Scanning Electron Microscope , X-Ray Diffraction and Raman Spectroscopy indicated the formation of poorly ordered graphene stacks embedded in amorphous phases on biochar. Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Electron Paramagnetic Resonance suggested the existence of hydroquinone-quinone moieties on biochar, which could induce the generation of reactive oxygen species and promote the degradation of chlorobenzene. Furthermore, hydrogen peroxide and hydroxyl radicals were generated from the reduction of oxygen with the oxidization of phenolic hydroxyl groups on biochar, which was responsible for chlorobenzene degradation. In addition, more types of intermediate products of chlorobenzene degradation were detected in biochar system compared with conventional Fenton reaction, which could be possibly ascribed to the interfacial reaction between chlorobenzene and reactive oxygen species on biochar surface. The findings in this study would provide a new insight into the application of biochar in organic pollutant removal .

Defect-derived catalytic sites in Ce/Zr-UiO-66 for degradation of hexachlorobenzene

Zhengyan Wang,Chenhao Yuan,Dong Yang,Mifen Cui,Jihai Tang,Zhuxiu Zhang,Xu Qiao

It is of great significance to develop catalysts for the degradation of hexachlorobenzene from the industrial thermal process. In this paper, formic acid was used as a modulator to generate defect sites in Ce/Zr-UiO-66 with intrinsic Brønsted acidity. The defective formate ligands were removed through methanol–water vapor treatment to expose additional open metal sites with Lewis acidity. The intrinsic Brønsted acid sites of the resulting Ce/Zr-UiO-66-FA-P achieved a hexachlorobenzene degradation efficiency of 99.5% at 250 °C. The generated Lewis acid sites facilitated the C–C cleavage of degradation intermediates. More than 95.0% of the final products were CO2/CO, coupled with chlorinated alkanes/alkenes, which outperformed other benchmark metal oxide catalysts. The Ce/Zr-UiO-66-FA-P catalyst maintained its catalytic activity in the model industrial flue gas and humid environment. The degradation pathway of hexachlorobenzene was tracked using in situ FT-IR spectra.

A novel induced zero-valent iron electrode for in-situ slow release of Fe2+ to effectively trigger electro-Fenton oxidation under neutral pH condition: Advantages and mechanisms

Xiaodong Ma,Tiantong Rao,Mingchen Zhao,Zhiwei Jia,Gengbo Ren,Jingyang Liu,Haiwei Guo,Zhineng Wu,Haijiao Xie

In-situ generation of iron catalysts in electro-Fenton (EF) process deserves more attention like in-situ generation of H 2 O 2 . In this work, a novel induced zero-valent iron (ZVI) electrode, which was composed of a graphite plate with good conductivity, ZVI powders and a small magnet, was for the first time designed through magnetic assembly. Fe 2+ could be slowly generated in-situ from induced ZVI electrode and effectively trigger EF oxidation of chlorobenzenes (CB) under neutral pH. Compared to the in-situ rapid release of Fe 2+ from sacrificial anodes and traditional one-time external dosing of Fe 2+ in EF, in-situ slow release of Fe 2+ from induced ZVI electrode was the most effective way to activate electrogenerated H 2 O 2 under neutral pH. Induced ZVI electrode had obvious advantages in terms of effective active areas, corrosion potentials and current responses. The optimum conditions including pH of 7.0, current of 29.9 mA, ZVI of 0.10 g and electrolysis time of 35.25 min were obtained by the response surface methodology (RSM) model with the maximum removal efficiency of 99.12%. The uniformed weak positive charge on the ZVI powders induced by the electric field was the dominant contribution to the in-situ slow release of Fe 2+ from the induced electrode. And, the impact of magnetic field on the CB removal and the release of iron ions was negligible. The degradation mechanism was revealed through the Fukui function based on the density functional theory (DFT) and by-products analysis. The evolution of acute toxicity to zebrafish in EF was further clarified. Besides, this induced ZVI electrode could be easily reused and has satisfactory stability. In briefly, this work provided a novel idea for the in-situ slow release of Fe 2+ in EF process.

Synergistic Removal of NO and Chlorobenzene on CeO2 Catalyst in a Dielectric Barrier Discharge Reactor at Low Temperature

Sun Ran,Hou Kunge,Jin Xingpeng,Yang Lihui,Song Lijie,Ouyang Chuang,Hou Jianyuan,Yuan Yuan,Liu Xingang,Zhang Renxi

The development of new technologies for removal of NO and chlorobenzene in complex flue gas situations at low temperature is a complex and demanding task. Here, the synergistic removal of NO and chlorobenzene was achieved through catalysis assisted dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) mechanism under different conditions. The experimental results suggested that the increase of specific energy density (SED) and the loading of CeO 2 strengthened the treatment of NO and chlorobenzene. A higher degradation efficiency of NO and a lower production rate of NO 2 were achieved after the introduction of chlorobenzene. The removal of chlorobenzene could also be benefited from this process, and the introduction of NO promoted CO 2 selectivity of chlorobenzene. The XPS and H 2 -TPR analyses confirmed that the reaction between chlorobenzene and NO occurred by the assistance of Ce 3+ /Ce 4+ redox cycle as well as the consumption and regeneration of chemically adsorbed oxygen. During the reaction, the oxygen vacancies (OVs) caused by plasma etching promote the redox cycle and alleviate the catalyst poisoning caused by chloride ions (Cl − ). Furthermore, a comprehensive analysis of the resulting byproducts revealed phenol as the most significant intermediate in chlorobenzene degradation, while acetaldehyde emerged as the major product resulting from ring-opening processes of chlorobenzene. Utilizing chlorobenzene from flue gas subtly, this method presents a more sustainable alternative for NO reduction, showing promise for addressing industrial emission challenges. Graphical

Enhanced catalytic performance and antichlorine poisoning over Cu-doped cobalt oxide nanosheets for chlorobenzene oxidation

Yalan Liu,Zhihao Zhong,Xinxin Yu,jiageng Xiong,Shantang Liu

The degradation of Chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs) by catalytic oxidation forms toxic products, and catalysts may be poisoned by chlorine at low temperatures. To address this, a Cu-assisted strategy is proposed for enhancing the catalytic degradation of chlorobenzene (CB) over cobalt oxide nanosheets. The Cu-doped Co 3 O 4 catalysts exhibited lower T 90 values (temperatures with 90 % conversion) and improved stability compared to the unmodified catalyst. These results were attributed to strong metal-metal interactions between Cu species and cobalt oxide nanosheets, which showed a high specific surface area, reduced binding energy of lattice oxygen, higher surface oxygen concentration, and more surface Co 3+ species. These properties promoted low-temperature catalytic activity. In addition, the disappearance of Cu 2+ satellite peak after the catalyst is used, indicating that the Cu 2+ also contributes to the catalytic activity. Furthermore, the in situ FTIR spectra provided details about the reaction mechanism of CB degradation over Cu-doped cobalt oxide nanosheets. The oxygen vacancy generation and the surface absorption of chlorine-containing intermediates were calculated using density functional theory calculations. This study provides new insight into novel pathways for catalyst design aimed at CB degradation.

Reduction characteristic of chlorobenzene by a newly isolated Paenarthrobacter ureafaciens LY from a pharmaceutical wastewater treatment plant

Nan Liu,Yan-yan Yao,Jin Zhang,Ji-guo Zhang,Chao Wu,Du-juan Ouyang,Chang-yong Zou,Zhen-qiang Yang,Ji-xiang Li

A highly efficient chlorobenzene-degrading strain was isolated from the sludge of a sewage treatment plant associated with a pharmaceutical company. The strain exhibited a similarity of over 99.9% with multiple strains of Paenarthrobacter ureafaciens . Therefore, the strain was suggested to be P. ureafaciens LY. This novel strain exhibited a broad spectrum of pollutant degradation capabilities, effectively degrading chlorobenzene and other organic pollutants, such as 1, 2, 4-trichlorobenzene, phenol, and xylene. Moreover, P. ureafaciens LY co-metabolized mixtures of chlorobenzene with 1, 2, 4-trichlorobenzene or phenol. Evaluation of its degradation efficiency showed that it achieved an impressive degradation rate of 94.78% for chlorobenzene within 8 h. The Haldane–Andrews model was used to describe the growth of P. ureafaciens LY under specific pollutants and its concentrations, revealing a maximum specific growth rate ( μ max ) of 0.33 h −1 . The isolation and characterization of P. ureafaciens LY, along with its ability to degrade chlorobenzene, provides valuable insights for the development of efficient and eco-friendly approaches to mitigate chlorobenzene contamination. Additionally, investigation of the degradation performance of the strain in the presence of other pollutants offers important information for understanding the complexities of co-metabolism in mixed-pollutant environments. Significance statement The degradation efficiency of chlorobenzene in waste gas is difficult to deal with its high volatility and molecular stability. However, the research on treatment technology of typical chlorine-containing volatile organic compounds is still concerned. A highly efficient chlorobenzene-degrading strain, identified as Paenarthrobacter ureafaciens LY, was successfully isolated from the sludge of a sewage treatment plant associated with a pharmaceutical factory. Its degradation efficiency was evaluated and found that it achieved an impressive degradation rate of chlorobenzene within 8 h. We believe that our study makes a contribution to the insight into solving the pollution of chlorobenzene.

MOFs-derived Co-Fe sulfides as highly efficient and stable catalysts to activate peroxymonosulfate for the degradation of trichlorophenol

Aotian Gu,Chunhui Gong,Manli He,Kaiwei Chen,Xinyu Zhou,Peng Wang,Kai Chen,Yan Jiao,Yi Yang

Advanced oxidation processes activated by transition metal have attracted much attention for their excellent performance in the removal of organic pollutants , but the development of efficient and environmentally benign catalysts is still a significant challenge. In this work, carbon shell encapsulating Co/Fe sulfide nanoparticles (Co/Fe@SC X ) were synthesized by pyrolysis of the resorcinol-formaldehyde (RF) coated MIL-101 @ZIF-67 bimetal Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). In the degradation of TCP , Co/Fe@SC 600 exhibited the highest TCP removal rate (97.33%) and reaction rate constant (k obs ) (0.169 min −1 ), as well as the mineralization rate of up to 60.19%. Compared to other prepared catalysts, Co/Fe@SC 600 not only possessed excellent catalytic activity, but also exhibited the lowest Co ion leaching concentration, good stability and high resistance to environmental factors. Further studies showed that the non-radical pathway dominated by 1 O 2 contributed most to the TCP degradation, and the radicals also played the indispensable role. The potential TCP degradation pathways in the reaction system was also investigated by analyzing the intermediate products during the degradation process. Overall, this study may provide some interesting insights into the design of advanced catalysts.

The superoxide radicals’ production via persulfate activated with CuFe2O4@Biochar composites to promote the redox pairs cycling for efficient degradation of o-nitrochlorobenzene in soil

Yan Zhao,Min Song,Qi Cao,Peizhe Sun,Yonghao Chen,Fanyue Meng

CuFe 2 O 4 nanoparticles are decorated on biochar (BC) by modified sol-gel method to form the CuFe 2 O 4 @BC catalyst for persulfate (PS) activation in a wide pH range. The application of CuFe 2 O 4 @BC for o -nitrochlorobenzene degradation in soil was explored in this study. The mechanism of heterogeneous PS activation was comprehensively investigated. The synergistic effects between CuFe 2 O 4 and BC could enhance catalytic activity and stability, including well dispersed CuFe 2 O 4 species, efficient electron transfer and abundant oxygen functional groups. The superoxide radicals (O 2 − ) produced from CuFe 2 O 4 and BC could mediate Cu(I)/Cu(II) and Fe(II)/Fe(III) redox pairs on CuFe 2 O 4 @BC surface to activate PS, and then generating •OH and SO 4 − continuously. Moreover, the reaction intermediates are identified as well to elucidate the possible degradation pathways. These findings help to achieve more comprehensive understanding of the heterogeneous activation process of PS by CuFe 2 O 4 @BC catalyst.

The XylR/NtrC-type regulator CbsR positively regulates upstream pathway of chlorobenzene degradation in Pandoraea pnomenusa

Xiang Yang,Xiong Jia-Xi,Xie Ze-Feng,Huang Duo,Song Qi,Wu Jing,Yan Dazhong,Chao Hong-Jun

AimsPandoraea pnomenusa MCB032 completely degrades chlorobenzene, whose metabolic pathway is encoded by cbs and clc gene clusters. The putative regulatory factors ClcR and CbsR are predicted to regulate the cbs and clc gene clusters. This research aims to understand the function of ClcR and CbsR.Methods and resultsRT-PCR analyses demonstrated that the cbsFAaAbAcAdB operon that encodes catabolic pathways for the degradation of chlorobenzene to chlorocatechol is located on an operon. Moreover, the clcABCDE operon is involved in the 3-chlorocatechol pathway. Gene knockout and transcriptional analysis showed that the transcription of the cbsFAaAbAcAdB operon is positively regulated by CbsR, whereas the clcABCDE operon is activated by ClcR. Primer extension analysis was used to locate the transcription start sites of the cbsFAaAbAcAdB and cbsR operons. Electrophoretic mobility shift assay analyses showed that CbsR is bound to the sites in the promoter regions of cbsFAaAbAcAdB and cbsR operons.ConclusionThe XylR/NtrC-type regulator CbsR positively regulates the transcription of the cbsFAaAbAcAdB operon encoding the upstream pathway of chlorobenzene catabolism, while the LysR-type regulator ClcR activates the clcABCDE operon encoding the downstream pathway.

Investigation of Cu-doped MnCeOx in PTFE catalytic fiber for synergistic removal of CB and NO at low temperature

Shengyong Lu,Xuanhao Guo,Manting Chen,Guanjie Wang,Juan Qiu,Jiaming Ding,Minghui Tang,Zhengdong Han,Yaqi Peng,Jianhua Yan

The synergistic removal of multiple pollutants from flue gas has attracted growing interest in recent years. In this study, Cu-doped MnCeO x catalysts were synthesized via an impregnation method and integrated into PTFE fibers using a split-film process to enable the simultaneous removal of chlorobenzene (CB) and nitrogen oxide (NO). Among the catalysts tested, Mn 2 Ce 1 Cu 0.6 O x exhibited the highest performance, achieving 90 % CB degradation and 100 % NO conversion at 180 °C. The PTFE-based catalytic fibers also demonstrated excellent removal efficiency, reaching 83.7 % for dioxins at the same temperature. A possible reaction mechanism is proposed in which the NH 3 -SCR process facilitates CB oxidation by generating reactive intermediates. Cu doping was found to enhance the density of acid sites and promote the ring-opening of CB, thereby suppressing chlorine accumulation and improving catalyst stability. These findings provide valuable insights for the development and optimization of catalytic bag filters for the efficient, synergistic removal of multiple pollutants from industrial emissions.

Tuning the degradation activity and pathways of chlorinated organic pollutants over CeO2 catalyst with acid sites: synergistic effect of Lewis and Brønsted acid sites

Xuelong Lv,Songcai Cai,Jin Chen,Dongxu Yan,Mingzhu Jiang,Jing Chen,Hongpeng Jia

Enhancing the surface acidity has been seen as an effective strategy to optimize the performance of catalysts for the degradation of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs). Herein, a series of catalysts are constructed by introducing Lewis and Brønsted acid sites into the skeleton surface of three-dimensional ordered macroporous (3DOM) CeO2. By a systematic study, we find that the introduction of Lewis acid sites can enhance the redox capacity of CeO2, while the surface Brønsted acid sites of the material promote chlorobenzene (CB) degradation through hydrolysis that is an effective degradation route to generate less chlorinated organic by-products. The optimal S–Ce0.7Zr0.3O2 with both abundant surface Lewis and Brønsted acid sites presents a stable activity and only 1.2% Cl2 selectivity with ∼90% CB conversion at 410 °C for 24 h. This work reveals the different roles and synergistic effects of Lewis and Brønsted acid sites to develop environmentally friendly CVOC combustion catalysts.
