We fabricate cellulose/chitosan (CE/CS) aerogel with stable superhydrophilic ( θ ≈ 0°) and underwater superoleophobic ( θ
oil > 150°) through a simple way. During the process of preparation of CE/CS aerogel, chitosan will self-assemble into number micron diameter particles on the surface of aerogel. Furthermore, the hydrogen bonding network structure of cellulose was destroyed and more hydrophilic groups (–OH) were exposed. Rough surface and hydrophilicity make CE/CS aerogel have a property of underwater superoleophobicity. CE/CS aerogel shows underwater superoleophobicity to different oils, and it still have stable superoleophobicity in corrosive solution. The important thing is that CE/CS aerogel can separate free oil/water mixture and surfactant-stabilized emulsions under gravity effectively. The sample is green, low cost, and environmental friendly, which is a promising candidate to be used in oil/water separation.

The direct discharge of oily wastewater into the environment is considered one of the greatest threats to the ecological environment. Membrane technology is considered as an efficient strategy to treat oily wastewater. However, the membrane fouling caused by oil adsorption has intensively impeded its practical utilization in oil/water separation. This work aims to fabricate an anti-oil-fouling membrane for the effective separation of oil/water emulsions. The PEGylated poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane was synthesized via thiol–ene photochemistry with poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) and 3,6-dioxa-1,8-octanedithiol (DOT) as the modifiers. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) mapping analysis revealed that the PEGylated layers show uniform distribution on the membrane surface by regulating the feed PEGDA concentration. The superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic characteristics of the PEGylated membrane provided oil-adhesion resistance to the membranes. The membrane grafted with a high amount of PEGylated layers shows a low pure water flux, due to the pore blockage. The PEGylated membrane possesses the stable surface wettability and permeation performance of emulsion. The separation efficiency of PEGylated membranes for multiple emulsions is greater than 99%, and the highest rejection value is as high as 99.9%. After the three-cycle filtration of emulsified pump oil solution, the flux recovery ratio of membranes still reaches 90%, indicating an outstanding fouling resistance to emulsified oily matters. This work provides a feasible strategy to prepare the antifouling PVDF membrane used for the oil/water separation.

The reduction of oil fouling in pipes and tanks is essential for the oil storage and transportation industry. In this study, a superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic surface (SUSS) with high wearability, weatherability, and durability was developed using a facile two-step synthesis method and used to expel fouled oil from the surface using water without a surfactant. Some typical oils, including kerosene and white oil, can be spontaneously expelled by static water; however, rapeseed oil requires motive water for expulsion because of its high affinity for the SUSS. Different occurrences can be estimated based on a correlated parameter, φ(Pe), which is calculated using an introduced dimensionless number, Pe=σLVuμ. A positive value of φ indicates the occurrence of fouled-oil expulsion by water replacement, whereas a negative value indicates no occurrence of this phenomenon. This study provides a facile strategy for the rapid cleansing of oil-fouled pipes and tanks without using a detergent, thereby lowering costs and environmental risks.

Superwetting oil-water separation membranes are effective materials for treatment of wastewater containing emulsified oil, but the problem of membrane pollution remains a huge challenge during its long-term operation. In this study, we successfully developed a superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic membrane using a simple phase separation method. The fabrication process involved three key steps: (1) surface hydroxylation of pristine PVDF using NaOH etching to generate active hydrogen bonds and hydroxyl groups, (2) acrylic acid (AA) grafting onto the hydroxylated PVDF surface to introduce carboxyl functionalities, and (3) in-situ chelation of needle-like ZnO onto the AA-grafted matrix. The synergistic effect of the surface needle-like ZnO and the hydration layer endowed the PVDF-OH/AA@ZnO membrane with an outstanding oil-water separation efficiency of n-hexane up to 99.68 %, and higher than 98 % for various emulsions (e.g. kerosene, petroleum ether, chloroform, and dichloromethane) under gravity. Moreover, compared with the basement membrane, the tensile strength of the modified membrane increased from 106.21 kPa to 153.84 kPa, indicating its excellent mechanical properties under strong external forces. The PVDF-OH/AA@ZnO membrane demonstrated exceptional recycling performance, with a separation efficiency above 97.25 % after five cycles, and exhibited anti-fouling capability with simple water rinsing used to remove surface oil residues. Overall, this study provides a scalable strategy for the design of superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic separation membranes for the practical treatment of oily wastewater.

Accumulation of oil spills and industrial emissions causing serious damage to the natural environment, and the treatment of oily waste water plays an essential role in resource utilization and environmental protection. Although lots of materials have been reported for the oil/water separation, most of them are still high cost and unstable during application in complicated environment. In this study, the phytic acid (PA) was anchored on the surface of stainless steel mesh (PA-SSM). Results revealed that the PA-SSM exhibited superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic properties, and presented ultra-high flux during separating the ether/water mixture (1.3 × 10 5 L·m −2 ·h −1 ). When the PA-SSM was employed to separate the high viscosity freezing oil/water mixture, it also presented a high flux of 1.1 × 10 5 L·m −2 ·h −1 , and the separation efficiency was still higher than 99.8 % even after consecutive separated for 60 times. Moreover, the PA-SSM exhibited excellent resistance to acid and salts, mechanical stability and contamination. The simple preparation, low cost and excellent performance of PA-SSM provide an option for the efficient separation of oil/water mixture in the continuous separation and harsh environment.

The increasingly serious situation of oil leakage makes it crucial to design a separation material that is convenient, green and durable to address the problem of separating oil–water mixtures. In this work, immersion coating and heating techniques are used to modify a layer of cellulose hydrogel on the hydrophobic copper foam surface for oil/water separation. Excellent superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic qualities were displayed by the modified copper foam. Different oil–water mixtures can be separated using the modified copper foam. The separation efficiency can reach 99.999% after 100 cycles, and the maximum flux reached 145 587 L m−2 h−1. Moreover, after soaking in 1 M HCl, NaCl, and NaOH solutions for 1 day or undergoing 30 abrasion tests, the separation efficiency remained above 99.993%. In general, the cellulose-modified copper foam offers excellent durability, sustainability, and environmental protection. It also has significant potential for oily wastewater treatment.

The preparation of superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic membrane for achieving highly efficient oil/water separation through a facile method is still a great challenge. In this work, a superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic membrane with an ordered porous structure is fabricated via a facile direct inkjet writing (DIW) 3D printing technology for the application of oil/water separation. To print the membrane, a solid-like solution containing cellulose acetate (CA), poly (viny1 alcohol) (PVA), and silica nano-particles (SiO 2 NPs) is used as the printed ink. As a result, the optimal 3D printed membrane exhibits a quite low water contact angles in-air about 18.14 ± 2.61° and a high underwater oil contact angle about 159.14 ± 0.59°, demonstrating its superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic characteristics. In oil/water separation process, the optimal printed membrane maintains high oil/water separation efficiency about 99.0% driven by gravity. In contrast to the traditional composite mesh preparing by coating CA/PVA/Si layer on the surface of commercial steel meshes, the printed membrane exhibits superior mechanical stability even after 30 min sonication or 100 bending cycles. Most importantly, the printed membrane still maintains good anti-fouling characteristics and high separation efficiency for separating oil/water mixture after 50 cycles.

Smart surface with the switchable water/oil extreme wettability by external stimuli has great research and application value. In this paper, we present transparent smart surfaces with pH-responsive water wettability in air and oil wettability in water via grafting pH-responsive block copolymers on an inverse opal film. The resulting transparent surface not only shows superhydrophobicity in air but also displays the underwater superoleophobicity after treatment with acid. This transition in wettability is reversible and can be repeated multiple times through adjusting the pH value on the surface. Moreover, this smart surface sustains its superhydrophobicity and underwater superoleophobicity after being abraded with the sand or immersed into NaCl aqueous solutions for 7 days. This transparent surface may be useful for the development of swimsuits, microfluidic valves, automotive glass and solar cells.

To address the worldwide oil and water separation issue, a novel approach was inspired by natural phenomena to synthesize superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic organic/inorganic nanofibrous membranes via a scale up fabrication approach. The synthesized membranes possess a delicate organic core of PVDF-HFP and an inorganic shell of a CuO nanosheet structure, which endows super-flexible properties owing to the merits of PVDF-HFP backbones, and superhydrophilic functions contributed by the extremely rough surface of a CuO nanosheet anchored on flexible PVDF-HFP. Such an organic core and inorganic shell architecture not only functionalizes membrane performance in terms of antifouling, high flux, and low energy consumption, but also extends the lifespan by enhancing its mechanical strength and alkaline resistance to broaden its applicability. The resultant membrane exhibits good oil/water separation efficiency higher than 99.7%, as well as excellent anti-fouling properties for various oil/water mixtures. Considering the intrinsic structural innovation and its integrated advantages, this core–shell nanofibrous membrane is believed to be promising for oil/water separation, and this facile approach is also easy for scaled up manufacturing of functional organic/inorganic nanofibrous membranes with insightful benefits for industrial wastewater treatment, sensors, energy production, and many other related areas. Keywords:core shell;flexible;oil water separation;superhydrophilicity;underwater superoleophobicity

Recently, much attention has been paid to underwater superoleophobic surfaces for their great potential in the industry. However, the large-scale practical utilization of the current underwater superoleophobic coatings is mainly limited by their complex and expensive fabrication processes and poor physical and chemical durability. Consequently, we fabricated a bioinspired superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic poly(vinyl alcohol)/montmorillonite composite surface by a facile, green process. This composite surface demonstrated excellent anti-wax and self-cleaning properties. The outstanding mechanical and chemical stabilities of this surface allowed it to retain its underwater superoleophobicity after 50 cycles of sandpaper abrading or prolonged immersion in corrosive solutions. Additionally, stainless steel mesh coated with this composite surface could separate various oil/water mixtures, including emulsions, driven only by gravity with an ultrahigh separation efficiency (>99.2%). Furthermore, the coated mesh achieved an extremely high separation efficiency of 98.6% and a separation flux of 37 098.6 L m−2 h−1 following 30 separation cycles. This multifunctional composite surface holds tremendous promise for large-scale practical applications.

A novel superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic material (MOF-5/PDA/SSM) with high flux, outstanding oil/water separation performance and durability was prepared. The stainless steel mesh (SSM) was modified by MOF-5 crystals and PDA. The introduction of MOF-5 can improve the hydrophilicity of SSM and achieve high water flux at the same time. PDA is a substance with strong adhesion which can be used as an effective bonding intermediate. The preparation strategy includes the self-polymerization of dopamine and the deposition of cubic clusters on SSM via hydrothermal reaction . The MOF-5 particles on the mesh are cubic hexahedral crystal with a uniform size diameter, which can trap water in the rough microstructure, forming a strong hydration barrier layer or composite water-solid interface on its surface, hindering the penetration of oil. The super-hydrophilicity and underwater superoleophobicity of the modified meshes were introduced by pre-wetting surface. The FTIR, XRD , XPS and SEM characterizations demonstrated that the successfully growth of MOF-5 and a rough structure was obtained on the mesh. The special wetting and the robustness of the fabricated mesh led to the outstanding separation efficiency (up to 99.5%), excellent recyclability (about 20 cycles) and high water flux (53.9 k L m −2 h −1 ). The mesh also showed remarked water flux and various oil/water mixtures separation performance. Particularly, the successfully prepared materials were found to be significant stable under various physical and chemical extremes environments, including maintain UWOCA>150 under acid/alkali media, marvelous performance after 120 min of continuous separation and high anti-oil intrusion pressure. The combination of metal organic framework and stainless steel mesh may provide a candidate application to effective oil-water separation.

The oily wastewater has been widely concerned owing to growing industrial wastewater and marine pollution. Herein, a cellulose-based oil/water separation membrane was fabricated using a very simple alternating soaking process (ASP). First, the sodium alginate was coated on the cellulose membrane surface (filter paper), and then CaCO 3 particles were assembled onto the membrane surface through ASP, finally we can get the superhydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic cellulose membrane (FP@SA/CaCO 3 ) for oil/water separation. The underwater oil contact angle (OCA) of FP@SA/CaCO 3 is 151.1°, which indicated that FP@SA/CaCO 3 has good underwater superoleophobicity. Moreover, for different oil/water mixtures, the FP@SA/CaCO 3 membrane has outstanding separation efficiency of over 99.2 % and the flux of over 400 L m −2 h −1 . Besides, even after 20 reuse, FP@SA/CaCO 3 still showed a high flux and separation efficiency, indicating FP@SA/CaCO 3 has good reusability. The FP@SA/CaCO 3 membrane with low cost and high performance shows a good application market for oily wastewater remediation in the future.
