In nearly all cases of underwater adhesion, water molecules typically act as a destroyer. Thus, removing interfacial water from the substrate surfaces is essential for forming super-strong underwater adhesion. However, current methods mainly rely on physical means to dislodge interfacial water, such as absorption, hydrophobic repulsion, or extrusion, which are inefficient in removing obstinate hydrated water at contact interface, resulting in poor adhesion. Herein, we present a unique means of reversing the role of water to assist in realizing a self-strengthening liquid underwater adhesive (SLU-adhesive) that can effectively remove water at contact interface. This is achieved through multiscale physical–chemical coupling methods across millimeter to molecular levels and self-adaptive strengthening of the cohesion during underwater operations. As a result, strong adhesion over 1,600 kPa (compared to ~100 to 1,000 kPa in current state of the art) can be achieved on various materials, including inorganic metal and organic plastic materials, without preloading in different environments such as pure water, a wide range of pH solutions (pH = 3 to 11), and seawater. Intriguingly, SLU-adhesive/photothermal nanoparticles (carbon nanotubes) hybrid materials can significantly reduce the time required for complete curing from 24 h to 40 min using near-infrared laser radiation due to unique thermal-response of the chemical reaction rate. The excellent adhesion property and self-adaptive adhesion procedure allow SLU-adhesive materials to demonstrate great potential for broad applications in underwater sand stabilization, underwater repair, and even adhesion failure detection as a self-reporting adhesive. This concept of “water helper” has potential to advance underwater adhesion and manufacturing strategies.

A wearable sensing device, it not only has good breathability to ensure long-term wearing comfort but also needs to have waterproof ability to avoid sweat erosion. However, most reported works only have breathability or waterproof ability, which greatly limits their application. Herein, we designed and fabricated a water-resistant and breathable sensor based on non-woven fabric via the simple methods of 3D direct writing and spray coating. The sensing principle of supercapacitive and the micro uneven structure of fibers endows the sensor with high sensitivity (77.19 kPa −1 ), wide detection range (0–65 kPa), fast response speed (within 50 ms), cycle stability (over 10,000 cycles). The stearic acid (STA) coating method enables the sensor with excellent hydrophobicity (water contact angle of about 160.9°) and waterproof ability that can work normally in humid environments and even underwater. Benefiting from the natural micropore structure of fibers, the sensor demonstrates excellent air permeability (359.4 mm s −1 ). As a result, the fabric-based sensor can monitor human motions, and physiological signals and recognize gestures in the normal open-air and underwater environment, demonstrating its huge potential in underwater applications.

Excessive underwater drag, coupled with a heavy marine fouling, not only adversely affects the operation and speed of ships but also leads to increased energy and fuel consumption. Inspired by the remarkable drag reduction and anti-biofouling capabilities of dolphin skin, we have developed a flexible polyurethane (PU) coating infused with osthole (OST). This coating not only exhibits exceptional drag reduction by postponing the boundary layer transition from laminar to turbulent flow but also demonstrates robust anti-biofouling properties under both dynamic and static scenarios. The resultant PU x /OST y composite coating achieved the drag reduction efficiency of 8.20 % to 12.65 % with mean flow velocities ranging from 1 to 6 m/s. The PU x /OST y surfaces also displayed highly enhanced anti-biofouling performances, with ∼98.4 % and 97.5 % reduction for green algae Chlorella and the diatom N. closterium , respectively, as well as ∼99.4 % reduction against P. pantotrophus . Furthermore, the PU x /OST y coating had amazing durability in extreme environments, such as light aging, cycle sand abrasion, thermal aging, ultrasonic treatment, and tape-peeling. Therefore, this study underscores the potential of the bioinspired flexible coating for the application of underwater devices with prominent drag reduction and antifouling performance.

In this study, the apparent contact angles of oil droplets on the rough surfaces in water were numerically studied using the Volume of Fluid (VOF) model. The results showed that the roughness of the surface affected the wettability. By increasing the roughness of the surface, the oleophilicity of the oleophilic surface and the oleophobicity of the oleophobic surface could be increased. Furthermore, the applicability and limitations of the prediction of the underwater apparent contact angle of the oil droplet by the contact angle model were investigated by 3D numerical simulations. It suggests that Wenzel model can accurately predict the underwater apparent contact angle of oil droplets on all the oleophilic, neutral and oleophobic surfaces, and Cassie model can only be applied to the oleophobic surface and Cassie–Baxter model can only be applied to the oleophilic surface.

The self-healing ability of superhydrophobic surfaces in air has attracted tremendous additions in recent years. Once the superhydrophobic surface is damaged underwater, water seeps into gaps among micro/nano structures. The air film diffuses into water and eventually disappears during immersion without actively replenishing the gas, which results in the impossible of self-healing. Here, an underwater self-healing superhydrophobic coating with the synergetic effect of hydrogen bonds and self-formed bubbles via the spraying method is fabricated. The movement of hydrogen bonds of the prepared polyurethane enables microstructures to reconstruct at room temperature and self-formed bubbles of effervescent materials underwater actively replenish gas before microstructures completely self-healing, achieving the self-healing property of the superhydrophobic coating. Moreover, the hydrophilic effervescent material is sprayed along with unmodified micron-scaled particles because modified nano-scale particles are key factors for the realization of superhydrophobic coating. An underwater stable superhydrophobic surface with pressure resistance (4.9 kPa) is demonstrated. This superhydrophobic coating also shows excellent drag reduction, anti-icing, and anti-corrosion properties. This facile and scalable method offers a new route that an underwater self-healing superhydrophobic coating executes the gas film recovery.

Adhesives with long-lasting and reversible adhesion to various underwater surfaces have a wide range of potential applications. However, the development of adhesives for underwater applications is challenging because the surface hydration layer weakens the intermolecular interactions such as hydrogen bonds (H-bonds). Herein, a simple and effective UV-curing strategy was proposed for the preparation of a strong, reusable, and durable biobased underwater adhesive with the combination of fatty acid chains and isobornyl rings as hydrophobic protection for H-bonds interactions. Specifically, a palm oil (PO)-derived monomer, PO fatty acid-ethyl acrylamide (POFA-EA), was chosen owing to its unique amphipathic structure, wherein the amide groups formed strong H-bonds with substrates and the long fatty acid chains served as hydrophobic protection layers. The ring structure of isobornyl acrylate (IBOA) which was used as a comonomer further enhanced the hydrophobic protection. The hydrophobic protection mechanism was confirmed by molecular dynamic simulation combined with experimental verification. The prepared poly(POFA-EA–IBOA) underwater adhesives exhibited a good energy dissipation efficiency (66.4%), and thus, it could reduce the damage caused by adhesive deformation. The adhesives can adhere to a metal surface underwater for up to 15 days and be reused for more than 50 times. This study provides a new hydrophobic protection strategy for the preparation of inexpensive, tough, reusable, and long-lasting underwater adhesives from renewable feedstocks.

Swelling is ubiquitous for conventional hydrogels but is not favorable for many situations, especially underwater applications. In this study, an anti-swelling and mechanically robust polyacrylic acid (PAAc)/gelatin composite hydrogel is reported with a rapid gelation process (10 1 s) under mild conditions via the synergy of MXene-activated initiation and zirconium ion (Zr 4+ )-induced cross-linking, without the requirement of external energy input. The MXene is found efficient to activate the chain initiation, while the Zr 4+ is prone indispensable for facilitating the cross-linking of formed polymer chains. The resulting hydrogel exhibits integration of exceptional anti-swelling properties and high mechanical performance at room temperature, thanks to the dense hydrogen bonds between PAAc and gelatin chains that enable an upper critical solution temperature above room temperature. Also, desirable electrical conductivity emerges in the hydrogel due to the simultaneous contribution of MXene and Zr 4+ , allowing stable electrical signal output of the gel upon deformation underwater. As a demonstration, an underwater communicator by harnessing the gel as a sensing module is assembled, which is capable of wirelessly delivering messages to the decoder on the ground via Morse codes. This study provides an exemplary way for the rapid gelation of tough and anti-swelling hydrogels for durable underwater applications.

Sustainable underwater adhesives have drawn much interest in promising applications and environmental engineering. However, developing a convenient strategy to combine recyclability and underwater adhesion into adhesive materials remains a formidable challenge. In this work, a degradable and closed-loop recyclable underwater adhesive tackifier is designed by nucleotide, via the ring-opening polymerization of thioctic acid in the presence of 5′-adenosine monophosphate and methacrylatoethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride. The nucleotide-tackified adhesives present an excellent underwater adhesion for various materials, tissues, and on-demand detachment adhesion behavior. The underwater adhesives demonstrate reusability, degradability, and closed-loop recyclability of dual monomers of thioctic acid and 5′-adenosine monophosphate. Interestingly, the waste residues of the underwater adhesives demonstrate processability and can be employed again in the construction of tough adhesive interfaces in both air and underwater, with further expanding sustainability. It is envisioned that the strategy of nucleotide-tackified sustainable underwater adhesives would offer promising insights for advancing sustainable and recyclable adhesive materials.

It is a significant challenge to flexible wearable sensors that incur unstable output signals and malfunction because of omnipresent low-frequency vibrations. Because their design in terms of molecular friction is almost the opposite of the elasticity of the material, current sensing soft materials possess adequate elasticity but inadequate damping vibration. In contrast, using highly damaging materials for sensing is challenging due to their substantial hysteresis. Herein, a highly self-damping ionic elastomer with a heterogeneous two-phase structure is introduced by the one-step photopolymerization of fluorinated monomers and hydrophobic lauryl methacrylate (LMA). The distinct self-assembly behavior between fluorinated contents makes the occurrence of phase separation easier and thus decouples the damping and elastic functions into two different phases. This unique design overcomes the long-standing contradictions in the damping and elasticity of conventional gel materials. Thus, the optimal ionic elastomer of HIE-43 mol % achieves high stretchability, conductivity, elastic recovery, strain-stiffening, underwater adhesion, and high loss factors (tan δ > 1). Finally, reliable human motion sensing and underwater communication could be achieved with the ability of shock resistance and noise interference resistance. This study opens the door for the development of self-damping flexible conductive materials with robust sensing and protective applications.

Underwater photovoltaics plays a pivotal role in photovoltaic applications. However, the underwater solar spectrum differs significantly from that in air, and as water depth increases, solar spectra across various wavebands exhibit distinct attenuation rates. Specifically, the attenuation rate of the red component of sunlight is considerably higher than that of green and blue light (400–600 nm). Thus, under these unique spectral conditions, there is an urgent need to develop stable devices that minimize power conversion efficiency (PCE) loss with increasing water depth. The 4-terminal (4T) structure tandem cell, designed with 2.35 eV CsPbBr3 and 1.63 eV Cs0.05(FA0.83MA0.17)0.95Pb(I0.83Br0.17)3, is prioritized due to its suitable optical response range and low PCE loss with increasing water depth. As CsPbBr3 utilized blue and green light in tandem, which has the highest light intensity underneath water, this study employed doping of SrBr2 into the CsPbBr3 film. This approach reduced the defect density of the film, enhanced carrier transport efficiency, and improved the photoelectric responsivity of the device in the 425–500 nm band. The CsPbBr3 perovskite solar cells that were fabricated demonstrated a high open-circuit voltage of 1.46 V and an exceptional PCE of 7.62%. Additionally, these devices exhibited excellent stability. Consequently, the 4T tandem device achieved PCEs of 15.28, 11.79, and 10.33% at 0, 0.5, and 0.7 m underwater depths respectively, with a variation rate of only 32%. Furthermore, the device demonstrated remarkable stability under working conditions, with an efficiency decay of less than 13% after continuous irradiation for 30 days. These findings suggest that the 4T tandem solar cell holds considerable potential for application in underwater photovoltaics.

Any surface immersed in sea water will suffer from marine fouling, including underwater sound absorption coatings. Traditional underwater sound absorption coatings rely heavily on the use of toxic, biocide-containing paints to combat biofouling. In this paper, an environmentally-friendly nanocomposite with integrated antifouling and underwater sound absorption properties was fabricated by adopting MWCNTs-COOH and SiO2into PDMS at different ratios. SEM, FTIR and XPS results demonstrated MWCNTs were mixed into PDMS, and the changes in elements were also analyzed. SiO2nanoparticles in PDMS decreased the tensile properties of the coating, while erosion resistance was enhanced. Antibacterial properties of the coatings containing MWCNTs-COOH and SiO2at a ratio of 1:1, 1:3, and 1:5 reached 62.02%, 72.36%, and 74.69%, respectively. In the frequency range of 1500–5000 Hz, the average sound absorption coefficient of PDMS increased from 0.5 to greater than 0.8 after adding MWCNTs-COOH and SiO2, which illustrated that the addition of nanoparticles enhanced the underwater sound absorption performance of the coating. Incorporating MWCNTs-COOH and SiO2nanoparticles into the PDMS matrix to improve its sound absorption and surface antifouling properties provides a promising idea for marine applications.

Hydrophobic conductive gels have attracted much attention in underwater sensing as the soft robots and wearable sensors. Among the various methods for preparing conductive gels, UV-initiated polymerization shows advantages of rapid curing and significant energy savings. However, traditional commonly used photoinitiators in UV-initiated polymerization often migrate or diffuse within conductive gels, especially with prolonged use or underwater, posing potential environmental and health risks. Herein, a novel lignin-based macromolecular photoinitiator (L-BF) is first designed by incorporating benzoylformate into the lignin backbone, demonstrating excellent UV absorption, high radical initiation efficiency, and hydrophobicity. Subsequently, hydrophobic eutectogels (HEG) are prepared via UV-initiated polymerization using L-BF as photoinitiator. The HEG shows excellent mechanical properties (toughness of 5.67 MJ m − 3 and strain of 941%) and scarcely L-BF migration underwater. Moreover, the hydrophobic network of L-BF endowed HEG with hydrophobicity (water contact angle exceeds 110°; swelling ratio is <5.8%), superior underwater adhesion (255 kPa), even maintained excellent sensing performance (gauge factor of 4.69), and long-term reproducibility (20 000 cycles) in air and underwater. Validation confirms the potential of HEG as an effective wearable sensor for underwater posture monitoring and communication, advancing the use of lignin and low-migration conductive gels in marine exploration.
