Programmable Wrinkled MXene-Based Soft Actuators with Moisture- and Light-Responsive Deformation and Water-Surface Locomotion Capabilities

Wenwei Huang,Jiayi Zhou,Yan Zhang,Yining Sun,Dongye Yang,Jianguo Tang,Mikhail Artemyev,Jun Li

Soft actuators are limited by single-mode driving technology, which poses challenges in dealing with complex and multidimensional movements. In this study, a multiresponsive soft actuator was fabricated by integrating a microwrinkling structure into an MXene-based film, enabling programmable motions. To achieve this, we introduced n-hexane into the film preparation process and utilized its rapid volatilization to accelerate the shrinkage difference between the film and the substrate. This resulted in anisotropic folding and excellent mechanical properties. Due to the remarkable moisture absorption and excellent toughness of MXene-based films, it exhibits rapid actuation in response to moisture gradients and light stimuli with large bending deformation, fast actuation speed, as well as excellent stability and durability. The anisotropic expansion and mechanical properties of the film enable it to have capability of three-dimensional shape-programmable configuration control. Furthermore, taking advantage of the exceptional photothermal properties of MXene-based films, we developed light-driven actuators that utilize the Marangoni effect for propulsion on the water surface, enabling programmable navigational control. Such a soft actuator has a broad applications prospect in the fields of biomimetic botanical models, terrestrial crawlers, and aquatic surface transport devices.

Moisture and solvent responsive cellulose/SiO2 nanocomposite materials

He Meng,Duan Bo,Xu Dingfeng,Zhang Lina

Water responsive SiO 2 /cellulose nanocomposite hydrogels and films were constructed, for the first time, by dispersing SiO 2 nanoparticles into cellulose solution in LiOH/urea solvent, and then by crosslinking with epichlorohydrin or regeneration in coagulation bath, respectively. The cellulose nanocomposite materials were characterized by Field emission scanning electron microscopy, FTIR, dynamic rheology, wide angle X-ray diffraction and mechanical test. The SiO 2 /cellulose nanocomposites at wet state or in water displayed unique behaviors, showing higher light transmittance than those before contacting with water. The results revealed that strong hydrogen-bonding interaction among water, cellulose and SiO 2 led the good dispersion of SiO 2 nanoparticles in the cellulose matrix. The incorporation of SiO 2 nanoparticles improved the transmittance and mechanical strength of the cellulose hydrogels, and also enhanced the mechanical strength of the films. Especially, the cellulose/SiO 2 nanocomposite films were milky at dry state, and changed to transparent after being soaked in water, different from the cellulose film without the SiO 2 nanoparticles. In our findings, SiO 2 and cellulose with water could form strong hydrogen bonding to create a homogenous network structure. The cellulose/SiO 2 composite as a smart material exhibited moisture and solvent responsiveness, showing potential applications in moisture detection.

Bioinspired shape-changing nanofiber dressings for intelligent wrapping and promoting healing of superficial wounds

Zizhao Chen,Pingping Feng,Ruqi Wang,Dongmin Chen,Chunmei Feng,Qishu Jin,Chen Yang,Botao Song

The use of dressings in clinical settings is common for the purpose of wound wrapping and creating an optimal microenvironment to enhance the healing process. Proper coverage of wounds with dressings serves as the fundamental basis for effective wound healing. Unfortunately, non-standard coverage by hands can cause pain and secondary damage to patients, while slow manual application during treatment of extensive burns may increase the risk of wound infection. Herein, drawing inspiration from the microstructure and hygroscopic deformation observed in pine cones, we propose a polyvinyl alcohol/polysulfone (PVA/PSF) smart dressing. This bioinspired smart dressing exhibits rapid bending deformation under high moisture condition, allowing easy adjustment of bending amplitude, speed, and direction. Moreover, the smart dressing is capable of rapid bending and autonomous wrapping around “artificial wounds” on a doll’s body, as well as fitting irregularly shaped “hand wounds” and extensive “arm wounds” on human subjects. By integrating two layers into one dressing design, we endow it with dual functionality: The hygroscopic PVA layer facilitates transversal liquid transport to effectively reduce exudate accumulation in the wound bed while maintaining proper moisture levels; meanwhile, the highly hydrophobic PSF layer repels various aqueous solutions to protect against external contaminants. In vivo results confirm that this multifunctional smart dressing promotes collagen synthesis and accelerates angiogenesis for accelerated wound healing. We believe that this innovative multifunctional approach to wound management will provide valuable insights into wound healing therapy.

Nanoresistance network-based built-in electric field drive strategy for flexible passive humidity sensors

Cheng Liu,Nan Lv,Jiyuan Feng,Shirui Zhang,Jiejing Yang,Andong Zhao,Yuteng Zhang,Haifeng Zhang

Current moisture power generation technology faces several limitations, including its dependence on humidity gradients caused by adsorption differences, structural complexities, and the requirement for thick humidity-sensitive layers. These constraints hinder its widespread use in passive humidity sensors. Here, we introduce an innovative approach to humidity sensing technology by utilizing nanoresistance network-based built-in electric field drive strategy. The polyvinyl pyrrolidone/polyaniline nanofiber membrane (PPNFM), fabricated as a nanoresistance network material model, serves as the sensing layer that adsorbs water molecules and acts as charge carriers after dissociation. Moreover, the PPNFM generates a built-in electric field through the potential difference created by connecting to two electrodes. This built-in electric field drives the directional movement of dissociated positive and negative ions within the PPNFM, producing a voltage in response to humidity. The potential of PPNFM and its humidity response mechanism are systematically investigated and evaluated. Furthermore, the humidity sensing performance of the sensor can be optimized by adjusting the composition and size of the PPNFM. This approach eliminates the requirement for specific structures, streamlining the fabrication process and paving the way for the development of flexible, ultra-thin, and passive humidity sensors.
