Teriflunomide (TEF, A771726) is the active metabolite of leflunomide (LEF), a disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drug. The main purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsion formulation of TEF. The W/O microemulsion was optimized formula is the physical and chemical stability of lecithin, ethanol, isopropyl myristate (IPM) and water (20.65/20.78/41.52/17.05 w/w) by using the pseudo-ternary phase diagram and the average droplet size is about 40 nm. The permeability of TEF microemulsion is about 6 times higher than control group in vitro penetration test. The results of anti-inflammatory effect showed that compared with the control group, the external TEF microemulsion group could significantly inhibit swelling of paw in rats, and no significant difference compared with oral LEF group. The results of hepatotoxicity test show that there were normal content of alanine aminotransferase (ALT)/aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and no obvious inflammatory infiltration of TEF microemulsion group compared with LEF group. The plasma concentration curve showed that compared with LEF group, the peak concentration of TEF microemulsion group was decreased, the half-life (t1/2) was prolonged, and the relative bioavailability of TEF microemulsion was 75.35%. These results suggest that TEF W/O microemulsion can be used as a promising preparation to play an anti-inflammatory role while significantly reducing hepatotoxicity.

In this research, a novel poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE) membrane with regular geometric pore structure fabricated by near-field electrospinning (NFES) method was firstly utilized in the preparation of water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion through membrane emulsification process. Effects of NFES PTFE membranes’ pore aspect ratio (length-width ratio of rectangle pore structure) on the water-in-oil droplet size, droplet size distribution, and uniformity of water-in-oil emulsion was investigated respectively. Results showed that the increase of pore aspect ratio would bring about a smaller water-in-oil droplet size. The average water-in-oil droplet size decreased from 234.9 nm (M-1) to 167.8 nm (M-4) when the pore aspect ratio increased from 1 to 4. Compared with conventional mechanical agitation, the water-in-oil emulsion formed by membrane emulsification process showed not only more uniform water-in-oil droplet size, but also higher long-term stability (remained homogeneous after 30 days). In addition to showing the excellent membrane emulsification performance in harsh environment, the NFES PTFE membrane also exhibited excellent water-in-oil emulsion separation performance. Compared with other NFES PTFE membranes, M-1 membrane showed the highest oil flux (33.4 L m -2 h -1 , -0.02 MPa) and water rejection rate (94.4%) in the separation of water-in-oil emulsion formed by membrane emulsification process.

Well-defined polyurethane (PU)-based grafted copolymers with poly(2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PDEM) side chains were prepared by a combination of radical polymerization and condensation reaction. They can self-assemble in water to form nanoparticles with PU as the core and hydrophilic PDEM chains as the shell. Tuning the pH value of the solutions allowed these nanoparticles to stabilize either oil-in-water (O/W) or water-in-oil (W/O) Pickering emulsions. Stable O/W emulsions were obtained with PU-based nanoparticles in the pH 3–5 or pH 11–12 range due to their better affinity to the aqueous phase. In contrast, changing the pH value to the range of 8–9 significantly changed the stabilizing behavior of the nanoparticles, leading to the formation of stable W/O emulsions. Additionally, the effect of oil polarity on the emulsification behavior of the PU-based nanoparticles was investigated. For highly non-polar oil like n-hexane, only O/W emulsions were generated and the resulting emulsions showed no response to pH change.

Polysaccharide-based microgels with high water content, excellent biocompatibility and controllable particle size have been widely studied as ideal candidates for drug release and delivery. In this study, microgels based on dextran were developed via the Schiff base formation between aldehyded dextran and ethylenediamine in a water-in-oil (W/O) microemulsion. Particle size of the resulted microgel was controllable between 800 and 1100 nm by modulating the amount of the employed co-surfactants (Span 80/Tween 80). Furthermore, fluoresceins ( e.g. , aminofluorescein) and drugs ( e.g. , doxorubicin) with free amino groups can be conjugated onto the network of the dextran-based microgel via Schiff base linkages. Since the Schiff base linkages are degradable via hydrolysis and their stability decreases with the environmental pH decreases, the resulted Schiff bases contained microgel showed a pH dependent degradation profile. These results indicated that the pH-sensitive microgel based on dextran could be used as promising drug delivery systems for biomedical applications.

Water-in-oil emulsions are frequently encountered in petroleum extraction. In this paper, CRB-SiO 2 , a cost-efficient and environmentally friendly demulsifier, was synthesized by a two-step method. The chemical structure and surface morphology were analyzed by flourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), respectively. The effect of salinity, concentration, temperature and pH value on the demulsification efficiency (DE) was investigated in detail. The DE reached 93.98% with 600 mg/L of CRB-SiO 2 at 70 °C. Also, it had an excellent tolerance of salt, acid and alkali. Moreover, the demulsification mechanism was also studied through three-phase contact angle, interfacial tension and self-assembly of interfacial membrane. CRB-SiO 2 has an amphiphilic structure and lower interfacial tension (IFT) around 37.75 mN/m. Accordingly, it can be easily adsorbed at the water-oil interface, destroying the interface membrane and initiating the separation of oil and water. In summary, CRB-SiO 2 has a potential application in petrochemical industry.

A significant amount of water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion is generated during petroleum extraction. However, the current commercial demulsifiers are expensive to produce and requires high demulsification temperatures, leading to increased energy and economic consumption. To enhance the efficiency of demulsifiers and reduce the cost of demulsifying W/O emulsions, we have successfully developed a novel demulsifier named TCED through a straightforward two-step process. This demulsifier features trimethyl citrate as the hydrophilic core grafted with three hydrophobic chains. Its structure was characterized using EA, FT-IR and 1 H NMR spectroscopy , and the demulsification performance was comprehensively evaluated. At a low demulsification temperature of 40 °C, TCED demonstrated a remarkable demulsification efficiency (DE) of 99.06% and 98.74% in emulsions containing water contents of 70% (E70) and 50% (E50), respectively. Especially, a DE of 100% could be obtained in both E70 and E50 emulsions at a concentration of 600 mg/L. Moreover, TCED displayed a high DE even at high salinity levels of 50,000 mg/L and across a wide pH range of 2–10. Additionally, the phase interface was consistently clear after demulsification. To investigate the demulsification mechanism of TCED, various adsorption kinetics experiments were conducted, including measurements of interfacial tension (IFT), surface tension (SFT), interfacial competitive adsorption, and stability of interfacial film. The results obtained from the experiments indicated that TCED possessed remarkable diffusion and replacement capabilities within the emulsions. As a result, it effectively disrupted the original interfacial active substances, such as asphaltenes aggregates found in crude oil. TCED exhibits a high DE at low concentration and temperature. This characteristic highlights its significant potential for low-temperature demulsification applications in the petroleum industry.

Superhydrophobic/superoleophilic surfaces (water contact angle greater than 150° with low hysteresis, with an oil contact angle smaller than 5°) have a wide-range of applications in oil/water separation. However, most of the essential methods to fabricate this kind of surface are complex, inflexible, and costly. Moreover, most methods focus on separating immiscible oil and water mixtures but lack the ability to demulsify surfactant-stabilized emulsions, which is widely present in industry and daily life. In this study, a facile and effective method was developed to fabricate superhydrophobic/superoleophilic surfaces that can be easily applied on almost all kinds of solid substrates. The treated porous substrates (e.g., steel mesh; cotton) can separate oil/water mixtures or absorb oil from a mixture. Furthermore, the compressed treated cotton is capable of demulsifying stabilized water-in-oil emulsions with high efficiency. The simple, low-cost, and material-unrestricted method provides an efficient way to separate oil/water mixtures of various kinds and has great potential in energy conservation and environmental protection.Keywords:superhydrophobic;superoleophilic;oil/water separation;stabilized water-in-oil emulsion

The coalescence and separation of surfactant stabilized water-in-oil emulsion was an important process in the chemical industry but the conventional thermo-chemical demulsification had high energy and reagent consumption. The studies on demulsification at room temperature via porous materials usually involved the emulsion with low water content (<1%). This study demonstrated the coalescence of W/O emulsion with 50% water content via filtration by a demulsifier-grafted polyether sulfone (PES) microfiltration membrane. The material worked as coalescer and it divided the emulsion into layered oil and water with high purity after filtration. The obtained material was analyzed by attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) and X ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to prove the existence of demulsifier. When the demulsifier loading was 0.8 wt% of the solvent, the initiator loading was 0.8 wt% of the demulsifier, and the polymerization grafting was carried out at 50 ° C for 5 h, the demulsification efficiency could reach 97.9%. The separation efficiency of the oil from water and the water from oil could get up to 99.5% simultaneously.

Recently, Pickering emulsions stabilized by edible particles have attracted significant attention from the scientific community and food industry owing to their surfactant-free character. However, those edible particles are mostly used for stabilizing oil-in-water emulsions, whereas those for water-in-oil emulsions are very limited. In this article, stable water-in-oil Pickering emulsions were prepared through dispersing phytosterol particles in oil phase, and the effects of antisolvent treatment, the type of oil, particle concentration, and water fraction on the stability, type, and morphology of these emulsions were investigated. In addition, the release profile of salt as a model aqueous compound from these emulsions has also been studied. Results showed that due to its higher water content, the antisolvent pretreatment of phytosterol in the ethanol/water system facilitated the dispersion of dried phytosterol particles into oil phase as microcrystals. Water-in-oil Pickering emulsions with droplet sizes of 80–100 μm were fabricated at phytosterol concentrations of 1.5–3% w/v and water fractions of 0.2–0.6. The dissolved phytosterol molecules in oil phase could help in emulsion stabilization through interfacial crystallization during emulsification, evidenced by polar microscopic observations. Moreover, the salt release from phytosterol-stabilized Pickering emulsions showed a temperature-dependent profile which could have potential application in a controlled-release system. The current study provided important information for fabrication of stable water-in-oil emulsion using natural particles.

Thermally-triggered electrical switching materials are of urgent demand for developing novel temperature sensors , overheat protection circuits, thermal controllers, battery management systems against overheating, etc. Here, we report a water-in-oil emulsion system with giant electrical switching ratios at room temperature prepared by a simple and efficient method. The temperature-sensitive phase transition process of alkanes as the oil phase causes the formation and collapse of conductive paths in the emulsion, resulting in electrical switching ratios of up to 6 orders of magnitude. The emulsions have good thermal cycle stability, and the switching ratio remains essentially unchanged after 100 cycles. The switching temperature can be easily adjusted by using alkanes of various chain lengths. In addition, the similar electrical switching effect is observed in four emulsions containing different neutral salts, ensuring the tunability and versatility of the system. The electrical switching emulsions offer a promising avenue to developing future high-performance, energy-saving, and low-cost electrical switching systems.

Medium coalescence technology is a research hotspot for the separation of oil-in-water emulsions. However, the coalescence mechanism is still unclear, making it challenging to effectively improve the separation performance. Herein, the microscopic mechanism of medium coalescence was revealed. We found that the effective collision positions under the action of the flow field include the exposed granule surface, adherent droplet surface, and three-phase contact line. Furthermore, a numerical model of the microscopic process of water-in-oil emulsion permeation through a granular bed was established. The effects of different parameters (including the number of medium layers, Reynolds number, and inlet concentration) on the microscopic process of capturing dispersed-phase droplets in the bed and the pressure drop in the coalescence area were studied. The numerical results show that the droplets form the bridging structure between the granules. On the one hand, the bridging structure promotes the capture of the droplets by the bed; on the other hand, it causes pressure-drop fluctuations in the coalescence area and asymmetric distribution of the velocity field.

Superhydrophobic (SHB) ceramic membrane surfaces have proved their superiority in water-in-oil (W/O) emulsion separation. However, the construction of ceramic membranes with SHB pores remains challenging and the interaction between the SHB pores and water droplets is still unclear. Herein, by growing uniform ZnO nanoclusters (NCs) onto the SiC grains of a symmetric SiC ceramic membrane and then grafting with triethoxy(octyl)silane, a series of ZnO NCs@SiC membranes with SHB pores were prepared. Prior to secondary hydrothermal synthesis ZnO NCs, the small-sized ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) were grown onto the SiC grains via a sol–gel process. All the ZnO NCs@SiC membranes with SHB pores showed improved water removal performance from W/O emulsions compared with that of the pristine membrane. The optimal membrane with SHB pores displayed a pore size of 0.19 μm with a water contact angle of 163.96°. The smaller water droplets in W/O emulsions, the membrane pores are easier to be polluted. When separating a 1000 ppm W/O emulsion with a water droplet size of 500 nm at a transmembrane pressure of 0.5 bar, the water rejection reached 98.90 %, and the steady-state oil flux was 92.99 L·m −2 ·h −1 . Based on the separation experiments, the separation mechanism was revealed. This work provides significant perceptions into constructing SHB pores of ceramic membranes, which might be useful for other possible applications.
