Effect of pores on the flotation of low-rank coal: An experiment and simulation study

Liang Shen,Chuanzhen Wang,Fanfei Min,Lingyun Liu,Changguo Xue

Low rank coal contains a large number of pores and cracks which have an adverse influence on its flotation behavior. Effects of pores on the hydration layer and flotation behavior of low-rank coal were studied by molecular dynamics method and experiments in this paper. A specific surface area/pore analyzer was employed to determine the pore structure. Pore distribution analysis indicated that the pores in the low-rank coal are mainly micropores. Pore volume and average pore diameter in low-rank coal can be reduced by pore compression pretreatment. Coal-bubble attachment experiments were conducted to study the effect of pores on the effect of pores on particle bubble adhesion process. Results showed that coal particles with less pores were more likely to adhere to the surface of the bubble. And a probable mechanism for the effect of pores on the adhesion of coal particles to bubbles was proposed. Molecular dynamics simulation results revealed that the pores on the surface of low-rank coal reduce the mobility of water molecules and form a more stable hydration layer. Flotation results indicated that reducing the pore content in low-rank coal could reduce the collector dosage in flotation process and improve the flotation behavior of low-rank coal.

Preparation of PVDF@TiO2 hybrid membrane and the research of the “hydration layer & rigid layer obstruction-electrostatic coalescence” anti-oil fouling mechanism

Yantao Song,Meng Yan,Zixuan Xu,Benqiao He,Biao Wu,Jianxin Li,Zhenyu Cui

In this study, the 3-Aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was first grafted onto TiO 2 nanoparticles (APTES-TiO 2 nanoparticles), which were then introduced the membrane surface by reacting with anhydride on the membrane surface and Schiff base reaction with the PEI-TA. There are two types of hollow fiber hybrid membranes with varying nanoparticle distributions were constructed. The influence of hybrid mode on the ability of anti-oil fouling was researched. The results indicated that the PVDF@TiO 2 hybrid membrane has a flux recovery rate of 96.68 % and a total flux decline rate of 15.52 %, indicating a good anti-emulsified oil fouling performance. By characterizing the anti-oil droplets adhesion, water-binding capacity, surface charge of membrane and concentrate system coacervate size, the coalescence ability of the hybrid membrane to the oil droplets and the spreading behavior of oil droplets on the surface were uncovered. Ultimately, the anti-fouling mechanism “hydration layer &rigid layer obstruction-electrostatic coalescence” was proposed, which can reasonably explain the weakness of the interplay between the membrane surface and oil droplets, thus slowing down the attaching and spreading of emulsified oil droplets. This study laid the foundation for developing hybrid membranes with high resistance to emulsified oil fouling ability. The proposed anti-fouling mechanism can provide new ideas for the efficient purification of oily wastewater.

Dynamic hydration layer and ion-release synergy in coatings: Unraveling the key to sustainable anti-scaling during boiling and energy conservation

Ran Zhao,Jianmin Gu,Zhihao Shang,Xiaopeng Cheng,Chunxiao Liang,Desong Wang,Shutao Wang,Jingxin Meng

Scale deposition severely degrades the heat-transfer efficiency of industrial equipment, leading to substantial energy wastage. While several advanced scalephobic surfaces have been developed to mitigate scaling, their poor stability under harsh operating conditions hinders practical implementation. Herein, we report a dynamic hydration layer-synergistic ion-releasing (DHLIR) coating that exhibits exceptional energy-saving potential, enabled by ultrahigh scale resistance under boiling conditions. The DHLIR coating was facilely fabricated via a combined spraying and heat-treatment process, utilizing aluminum phosphate (AP) as the inorganic binder, titanium dioxide (TiO₂) nanoparticles as the structural reinforcement phase, and hexagonal boron nitride ( h BN) nanosheets as the thermally conductive filler. Notably, the superior scalephobic performance of the DHLIR coating stems from two key mechanisms: the surface hydration layer minimizes mineral ion adsorption, while the released scale inhibitors reduce scale adhesion. Furthermore, the DHLIR coating demonstrates robust durability under extreme environments, including high temperatures, abrasion, and corrosive liquids. In a simulated industrial boiler setup, the DHLIR coating conserved approximately 15.3 % of energy compared to stainless steel. This work thus presents a promising strategy for anti-scaling and energy conservation in boiling environments.

Development of a novel temperature-resistant and salt-resistant double-cationic surfactant with “super thick hydration layer” for clean fracturing fluid

Meng Cun,Jincheng Mao,HaiLin Sun,Guo Wei,Feng Tang,Wenlong Zhang,Jizhen Tian,Xiaojiang Yang,Chong Lin,ZiGao Huang

In recent years, cationic surfactants have received extensive attention in cleaning fracturing fluid thickeners due to various unique properties. At the same time, the development of temperature-resistant and salt-resistant clean fracturing fluid is the key to deep well oil and gas resource development. In this study, the rigid-soft combined strategy is adopted for molecular structure designs. N,N -dimethylcyclohexylamine and epichlorohydrin are used as the initial reactants; after the ring-opening reaction occurs, they are quaternized with erucamide propyl dimethyl ammonium to synthesize a novel double-cation viscoelastic surfactant , SY–JS. With double-cationic charges on the head group, water molecules are selectively adsorbed around the cation lattice to increase the hydration layer, and thus, salt tolerance is improved. Cyclohexane with a rigid structure improves temperature resistance. The ultra-long unsaturated hydrophobic tail imparts excellent heat tolerance and dissolubility to the designed viscoelastic surfactant. The clean fracturing fluid prepared by 3 wt% SY–JS with 130,000 ppm NaCl or KCl performs well under a shear rate of 170 s −1 at 140 °C, and the apparent viscosity remains above 30 mPa s −1 after 120 min.. Additionally, the results show that single-tail surfactants exhibit excellent performance at approximately 140 °C. Afterward, the brine produced from Rumaila and Jiyuan oil fields is used to prepare brine-based clean fracturing fluids, and evaluations, including proppant suspension, gel breaking, and permeability damage, were conducted. The results show that the brine-based clean fracturing fluid completely meets the requirements of hydraulic fracturing industrial application.

Surface manipulation for prevention of migratory viscous crude oil fouling in superhydrophilic membranes

Zhao Yuanyuan,Yang Xiaobin,Cheng Zhongjun,Lau Cher Hon,Ma Jun,Shao Lu

Here, we present a proactive fouling prevention mechanism that endows superhydrophilic membranes with antifouling capability against migratory viscous crude oil fouling. By simulating the hierarchical architecture/chemical composition of a dahlia leaf, a membrane surface is decorated with wrinkled-pattern microparticles, exhibiting a unique proactive fouling prevention mechanism based on a synergistic hydration layer/steric hindrance. The density functional theory and physicochemical characterizations demonstrate that the main chains of the microparticles are bent towards Fe 3+ through coordination interactions to create nanoscale wrinkled patterns on smooth microparticle surfaces. Nanoscale wrinkled patterns reduce the surface roughness and increase the contact area between the membrane surface and water molecules, expanding the steric hindrance between the oil molecules and membrane surface. Molecular dynamic simulations reveal that the water-molecule densities and strengths of the hydrogen bonds are higher near the resultant membrane surface. With this concept, we can successfully inhibit the initial adhesion, migration, and deposition of oil, regardless of the viscosity, on the membrane surface and achieve migratory viscous crude oil antifouling. This research on the PFP mechanism opens pathways to realize superwettable materials for diverse applications in fields related to the environment, energy, health, and beyond.

Robust peony-like Cu3(PO4)2/UiO-66-NH2/PVA membranes with exceptional anti-fouling performance for high flux emulsion separation

Jingling Gong,Bin Xiang,Ruirui Jin,Zhaoyang Li,Weimin Liu,Jian Li

Membrane fouling is a key challenge to the sustainable operation of oil–water separation membranes. Constructing a stable hydration layer on the membrane surface as an oil-fouling resistance barrier by modulating the physicochemical structure of the membrane is one of the most effective strategies. Herein, inspired by the petal structure in nature, Cu 3 (PO 4 ) 2 and UiO-66-NH 2 particles were combined by a self-assembly strategy to construct CUP (Cu 3 (PO 4 ) 2 /UiO-66-NH 2 /PVA) composite membranes with anti-fouling capability against viscous crude oil. Benefiting from the petal structure and abundant polar groups within the membrane, the as-prepared membrane could easily combine with water molecules to form a stable hydration layer, which acted as a barrier to hinder the oil contamination of the membrane. Further, the hierarchical flower-like structure was conducive to the improvement of the emulsion breaking rate and permeation flux of oil-in-water emulsions. After 60 min continuous cross-flow separation, the obtained CUP composite membrane still remained prominent separation efficiency (99.6 %) and permeate flux (4685.96 LMH/bar). In addition, the CUP composite membranes showed outstanding resistance to acid and alkali as well as abrasion. This study provides an effective method for the advancement of high-performance membranes with high flux and anti-fouling capability in the flied of oily wastewater treatment.

Zwitterionic multifunctional coatings with strong hydration for ureteral stents to inhibit infectious encrustation

Yucong Wu,Zhenqing Li,Xiufang Wen,Yanping Zhong,Haoyan Chen,Lei Qian,Jiawei Li,Sujuan Yan,Peng Yu,Ye Tian,Haoyu Jin,Zhengao Wang,Jinxia Zhai,Chengyun Ning

In the complex urinary environment, an effective method is needed to combat ureteral stent encrustation. Herein, recognizing that the adsorption of mineral salts is the initial step in the encrustation process, we utilized the barrier effect of hydration layers to inhibit encrustation. Through molecular dynamics simulations, sulfobetaine methacrylate can form a hydration layer, which repels encrustation ions in a simulated urinary environment, preventing attachment. Then, we developed a multifunctional zwitterionic polymer coating on the polyurethane stent (PU/ATS) by employing UV-initiated free radical polymerization combined with a dip-coating technique. The hydration layer endows the coating with superhydrophilicity and excellent lubricity, effectively resisting 96.1 % and 83.5 % of encrustation in 30 days and 90 days of urine flow simulation and significantly reducing the bacteria adhesion. PU/ATS demonstrated improved anti-encrustation and anti-biofilm performance under infected conditions compared to the Bard® InLay Optima® stent. Moreover, in the rat bladder encrustation model, the PU/ATS reduced encrustation by 99.6 % (no infected) and by 86.7 % (infected) without organ damage. Therefore, the PU/ATS, by leveraging the hydration layer mechanism as an effective barrier, provides a practical and highly promising solution to combat encrustation and its associated urological complications.

Coral-Inspired Polyrotaxane Dynamic Antifouling Membrane Simultaneously Enhances Flux and Antifouling Performance

Sisi Ma,Yingbo Zhang,Linlin Du,Mingwen Wang,Wenying Shi,Hongbin Li

Inspired by soft coral’s self-cleaning properties, a polyrotaxane-based membrane (EVOH-PR) with sliding α-cyclodextrin rings was designed to enhance flux and antifouling performance. The sliding-ring structure, synthesized via click chemistry, mimics coral’s dynamic motion to induce hydration layers and steric hindrance. Molecular dynamics simulations confirmed the dynamic behavior of PR and the dynamic antifouling mechanism. The EVOH-PR membrane achieved a high flux recovery rate (95.1%), low flux decline rate (7.54%), and maximum flux (720 L/(m2·h)). Stability tests showed unchanged hydrophilicity and separation efficiency after multiple cycles. Synergy between movable rings, hydration layers, and steric hindrance enabled dynamic antifouling. This work provides a proactive dynamic antifouling strategy through coral-inspired molecular motion.

A Superhydrophilic Zwitterionic Hydrogel Coating for Enhancing Long-Term Anti-bacterial Adhesion and Anti-encrustation Properties of Ureteral Stents

Zhenqing Li,Jiawei Li,Lei Qian,Ye Tian,Haoyu Jin,Peng Yu,Zhengao Wang,Chengyun Ning,Jinxia Zhai

Prolonged indwelling of ureteral stents often leads to encrustation, which can cause functional failure and poses a significant clinical challenge. Zwitterionic polymers exhibit excellent anti-fouling performance due to their strong surface hydrations. Inspired by this, a multifunctional hydrogel coating based on a trimethylamine N-oxide zwitterionic polymer was developed for polyurethane stents to mitigate encrustation. The coating was fabricated using an innovative approach that combines superwetting-assisted interfacial polymerization strategy with dip coating technology, significantly improving the adhesion strength between the coating and the stent surface to ensure long term stability. Notably, the coating strongly interacts with water molecules to form a robust hydration layer, effectively inhibiting bacterial adhesion. In a 90-day simulated urinary flow test, the coating demonstrated outstanding anti-encrustation performance, reducing encrustation by 92%, while maintaining excellent biocompatibility. This coating technology provides an effective and durable solution for preventing complications associated with ureteral stents and shows broad application potential in the field of urological medical devices.

In-situ assembly of polyelectrolyte via surface segregation of titanium oxide for antifouling membranes

Mengying Long,Yurong Jiang,Chao Yang,Zijian Xu,Runnan Zhang,Jinqiu Yuan,Shiyu Zhang,Miaomiao Zhang,Hong Wu,Zhongyi Jiang

Membrane separation technology is often challenged by serious membrane fouling. Introducing hydrophilic polyelectrolyte through facile modification methods to construct antifouling membrane surfaces remains large room to be explored. Herein, antifouling membranes with the flux recovery ratio nearly 100 % was designed via a one-step surface segregation method. Coordination and hydrogen bond interactions between hydrolyzed tetrabutyl titanate (TBT) in the casting solutions and poly(sodium-styrene-sulfonate) (PSS) in the coagulation baths were generated to assemble PSS for the first time. The PSS modified membrane surface formed a strong hydration layer to resist oil pollutants, strengthening the “fouling resistance” mechanism. On the other hand, zeta potential of the membrane surface decreased from −12.1 mV to −54.6 mV after introducing the negatively charged PSS, enhancing the “electrostatic repulsion effect” to repel negatively charged oil pollutants. The synergistic intensified “fouling resistance” and “electrostatic repulsion effect” endowed the membrane with high antifouling performance (99.5 %, 0.5 % and 0.6 % of the flux recovery ratio, total permeance decline ratio and reversible permeance decline ratio, respectively). Our work provided a facile and general strategy to develop the in-situ assemble of the polyelectrolyte on the surface with prominent antifouling performances for environmental and bioengineering applications.

Application of hydrophilic and low-surface-energy anti-fouling membrane for ECMO

Sun Tao,Lunhao Zhi,Chong Cheng,Shuang Li,Shudong Sun,Changsheng Zhao

ABSTRACT During the application of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), protein adsorption on the membrane not only leads to a decline in the efficiency of gas exchange but also triggers a series of adverse effects and even blood coagulation. Herein, we provide the hydrophilic and low-surface-energy strategy to prepare a fouling-resistance and fouling-release membrane for ECMO. Polyvinylimide (PEI) was grafted with tannic acid (TA) on the PES membrane to form a hydrophilic coating, on which fluorinated small molecules with low surface energy were subsequently grafted by ring-opening reaction to form low-surface-energy domains. The hydrophilic coating resists fouling adhesion by forming hydration layers, while the low surface energy of the hydrophobic domains facilitates the release of pollutants. Moreover, the introduction of the hydrophobic domains facilitates gas-liquid exchange in the ECMO-simulated environment. After PBS rinsing, BSA and BFG removal improved by 97.81% and 227.83%, respectively. Finally, in our ECMO-simulated gas-liquid circulation detection device, the modified membrane exhibits excellent gas exchange properties (The O 2 and CO 2 exchange rates reach 123.37 and 168.52 mL·min -1 ·m -2 , respectively) and is resistant to plasma leakage. This study provides a new surface modification anti-fouling strategy with simultaneous enhancement of hemocompatibility and gas exchange efficiency.

A highly hydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic layered double hydroxides composite membrane for oil-water emulsion separation: Performance, mechanism, and molecular dynamic simulation

Shuangquan Liu,Yonggang Du,Shunping Wang,Ying Zhao,Yin Xu,Yujiao Wang,Ting Li

Aimed at the problem of oil substances usually existed as stable emulsified state in oily wastewater, a novel highly hydrophilic/underwater superoleophobic layered double hydroxide (LDH) composite ultrafiltration (UF) membrane was prepared via interfacial polymerization of dopamine and in-situ growth of MgFe-LDH for efficient oil-water separation. Owing to its surface roughness Ra = 45.7 nm) and highly hydrophilicity/underwater superoleophobicity (water contact angle < 10°, underwater oil contact angle > 150°), the LDH composite UF membrane featured with higher flux recovery ratio (expanded by 104.9 %) and better anti-fouling capacity (total fouling ratio decreased from 69.4 % to 37.2 %) than conventional UF membrane. The efficiencies for various types of oil-water emulsions separation exceeding 94 % even after eight cycles and were kept at high fluxes in the range of 310–596 L m −2 h −1 , and the fluxes still remained at 60–86 % after a continuous filtration within 1000 min. For oil-water separation mechanism, on the one hand, the water molecules were aggregated and bonding with hydroxyl groups rapidly via hydrogen bonds to form a hydration layer on LDH composite UF membrane surface, which was conducive to water molecules fast diffusion and penetration. On the other hand, the hydration layer could effectively inhibit oil droplets from contacting membrane surface, thereby enhancing anti-fouling property and ensuring water flux. This study provides a simple and effective method for the establishment of LDH composite UF membrane with excellent performance in oil-water separation, which possesses a great potential for high concentration emulsifying wastewater treatment.
