Aluminum-lithium alloy powders receive extensive concern as metal fuel in propellants for high heat value and coefficient of combustion. However, the presence of highly active metal lithium leads to the instability of alloy powder, limiting its application in propellants. Herein, the fluorination-energetic modification is developed to solve the activity problem of aluminum–lithium alloy (Al-5Li, Li 5 wt%) powders and increase their energy level. The first fluorinated layer is constructed by fluorosilane and epoxy silane coating to achieve the modifiable and functional aluminum–lithium alloy (Al-5Li@FS). Afterwards, the energetic layer is coated on Al-5Li@FS surface by glycidyl azide polymer (GAP) to obtain the fluorination-energetic composite powders (Al-5Li@FSG). The microstructural and chemical composition characterizations of Al-5Li@FSG are performed by SEM, FTIR, XPS, TEM, and TOF-SIMS. TG-DSC results show that the coated alloy powders can exhibit excellent thermal properties with remarkably enhanced exothermic enthalpy and thermal weight gain. The Al-5Li@FSG shows significantly improved combustion performances with reduced ignition delay time and repressed agglomeration phenomenon. Furthermore, hydrophobicity, water-reactivity, and compatibility with propellant components are also well modified of the Al-5Li@FSG. This work provides a guideline for preparing aluminum–lithium alloy powders with remarkable stability, excellent combustion performance, compatibility, and high energy level.

Coal fly ash (CFA), a major byproduct of coal-fired power plants, poses significant environmental challenges due to landfill accumulation and air pollution. Traditional recycling methods, primarily focused on construction materials, are limited by low efficiency, marginal economic returns, and potential ecological risks. This study proposes a high-value and eco-friendly strategy for CFA utilization based on molten salt electrochemistry. In this novel process, CFA is leached in molten CaCl 2 –CaO, and soluble silicate ions are subsequently reduced electrochemically to produce water-reactive silicon. The resulting silicon powder features a loosely agglomerated, submicron structure, showing high reactivity with water at temperatures near its boiling point and enabling on-demand hydrogen generation. This approach enables the efficient extraction of high-value silicon from CFA, offering a promising pathway for the clean and sustainable utilization of CFA in energy-related applications.

The effects of the electrical double layer (EDL), which pertain to the compositions and interactions among electrolyte species, significantly impact the catalytic process. There is a pressing need to investigate the role of electrolyte components and to deepen our understanding of EDL effects. In this study, we tune the water activity within a range of anionic surfactants featuring different functional groups to adjust H2 evolution activity and CO2 reduction selectivity. We demonstrate that these anionic surfactants are active in the local reaction environment under a cathodic potential. The enhanced selectivity of CO2 to CO can be attributed to the robust interfacial hydrogen-bonding network reformed by the anionic surfactants. This network diminishes the water dissociation activity and promotes the hydrogenation step in CO2 reduction. Notably, the electrolyte incorporating anionic surfactants improves the CO2 reduction performance, registering CO Faradaic efficiencies of 89.7% (RSO3–, SDS), 97.5% (RSO4–, SLS), 98.4% (RPO42–, SMP), and 98.9% (RCOO–, SL) at −1.2 V versus RHE, thereby outperforming the blank KHCO3 electrolyte (53.1%). This research underscores the crucial influence of anionic additives in the CO2RR.

The HER side reaction and uncontrollable dendrite problem severely impede the practical use of aqueous zinc ion batteries (ZIBs). In this work, we find that a 2D graphitic carbon nitride (g-C 3 N 4 ) additive can act as effective Zn 2+ flux regulator and achieve smooth zinc plating/stripping. As verified by experimental investigations and theoretical calculations, the porous 2D g-C 3 N 4 additives can not only homogenize the zinc ions flux but also effectively promote the dehydration kinetics of zinc ions. Meanwhile, the C 3 N 4 nanosheets can reduce the activity of free water molecules through interacting with H 2 O molecular by hydrogen bonding, thereby inhibiting the hydrogen evolution side reaction. Based on the polyacrylamide-C 3 N 4 composite hydrogel electrolyte, Zn||Zn symmetric cells can operate over 500 hours at an ampere density of 5 mA cm −2 , while Cu||Zn asymmetric cells exhibit a remarkable cycling stability of one thousand cycles with coulombic efficiency near 99 %. Our findings will enlighten practical electrolyte design strategies for reliable quasi-solid-state rechargeable zinc metal batteries in the future.
