In this study, we introduce a novel “water-in-salt” electrolyte for Bromine-ion batteries (BIBs) for the first time: 3M AlCl 3 + 1M NH 4 Br. The 3M AlCl 3 establishes the “water-in-salt” system, while 1M NH 4 Br supplies Br- ions. Employing flexible graphite paper as the cathode, during charging, Br- cooperates with AlCl 3 , forming AlCl 3 Br - ions that embed into the graphite paper, resulting in reversible reactions during discharge. The anode utilizes various metals such as Zn, Cu, Pb, In 2 O 3 , undergoing reversible redox reactions in the charge–discharge process. The designed electrolyte effectively prevents elemental bromine generation, presenting a safe, green, and environmentally friendly aqueous electrolyte suitable for BIBs.

Electrochromic materials were discovered in the 1960s when scientists observed reversible changes between the light and dark states in WO 3 thin films under different voltages. Since then, researchers have identified various electrochromic material systems, including transition metal oxides, polymer materials, and small molecules. However, the electrochromic phenomenon has rarely been observed in non-metallic elemental substances. Herein, we propose the development of non-metallic iodine electrodeposition-based electrochromic dynamic windows using a water-in-salt electrolyte containing iodine ions. The unique electrolyte environment and solvation structure of the water-in-salt electrolyte suppress the dissolution and shuttle effect of iodine, thereby achieving a different reaction pathway compared to traditional electrolytes. This pathway involves a reversible solid-liquid transition between solid iodine and solvated iodide ions. The iodine electrodeposition-based electrochromic dynamic window demonstrates a high optical contrast of 76.0% with near colour neutrality and excellent cycling stability. A practical 400 cm 2 complementary dynamic window is fabricated to demonstrate good electrochromic performance, including high optical contrast, a near colour-neutral opaque state, fast response time, uniform modulation, and polarity-switchable functionality.

Chloride ion batteries (CIBs) are considered promising candidates in the field of batteries. Safety concerns are a major issue in battery technology, which can be effectively addressed by using water-in-salt electrolyte. However, traditional CIBs suffer from issues such as poor lifespan and low cycling capacity. Therefore, our research proposes a novel aqueous CIB composed of a VOC (Vanadium pentoxide doped with graphite) cathode, a zinc anode, and (CH 3 ) 4 NCl + LiCl aqueous electrolyte for the first time. The developed battery boasts advantages such as low cost, arbitrary folding, lightweight design, and overall safety. The battery exhibits a high discharge platform of approximately 2.5V and considerable discharge capacity, reaching a maximum of 3.49mAh cm −2 at a current density of 1A g −1 . After 200 cycles, the capacity retention rate remains around 77 %. Notably, the battery is very simple to fabricate and burn in flames at a temperature of 1300 °C without explosion. And it is also able to work normally when subjected to folding, rolling, and piercing. This low-cost, flexible, and safe novel aqueous chloride-ion battery holds great application potential in portable devices, automotive, military, and other industries, opening up new possibilities for the future development of batteries.

Although water-in-salt (WIS) electrolytes have significantly extended the voltage window of aqueous batteries and supercapacitors, the inevitable precipitation of highly concentrated salts at low temperatures leads to performance degradation and even failure of devices. The introduction of an organic co-solvent can effectively overcome this crucial drawback; however, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Herein, we demonstrate the study of acetonitrile (ACN) suppressing salt precipitation mechanism in NaClO4-based WIS electrolytes through combining theoretical simulation and experimental analyses. ACN molecules strongly coordinate with Na+ ions to change the solvation structure of the cation–anion from aggregates to contact ion pairs and/or solvent separated ion pairs, weakening the interaction between anions and cations, thereby suppressing the precipitation of NaClO4. Furthermore, using the hybrid electrolyte, a built carbon-based supercapacitor achieves a voltage window of 2.3 V. Impressively, it also retains 86.5% of the room-temperature capacitance and exhibits excellent rate capability and temperature resistance at an ultra-low temperature of −50 °C. This work provides guidance for non-inert co-solvents suppressing salt precipitation, which helps to obtain desired electrolytes for reliable low-temperature supercapacitors.

Li–CO2 batteries have attracted worldwide attention because of their dual characteristics of high energy density and effective CO2 capture. However, the basic electrochemistry mechanism involved has been unclear, which is mainly confused by the complicated decomposition of organic electrolytes. Herein, water-in-salt (WIS, LiTFSI/H2O 21.0 mol/1 kg) has been explored as a suitable electrolyte for the first time to investigate the reaction mechanism of Li–CO2 batteries with different cathodes (carbon nanotube (CNT) and Mo2C/CNT, respectively). An Mo2C-based Li–CO2 battery with WIS delivers a higher energy efficiency of 83% and a superior cyclability, compared to those of the CNT-based counterpart cell. Through various ex/in situ qualitative/quantitative characterizations, the Mo2C-based Li–CO2 battery with WIS can operate on the reversible conversion of CO2-to-Li2C2O4 ((e–/CO2)ideal = 1) at lower discharge/charge overpotentials, while the CNT-based counterpart cell is based on the formation/decomposition of Li2CO3 ((e–/CO2)ideal ≈ 1.33) at high overpotentials. Such a difference in CO2 reduction products stems from the stronger interaction between Mo2C(101) and Li2C2O4 than that of the CNT and Li2C2O4 based on the density functional theory calculations, resulting in the selective stabilization of the intermediate product Li2C2O4 on the Mo2C surface.

Lead–acid batteries are widely used in medium and large energy storage systems, but their application in emerging technologies has been limited by shortcomings in practical applications, such as low specific capacity and irreversible sulfation. We tried to apply “water-in-salt” electrolytes to novel symmetric lead-based batteries, exploring a variety of active material substrates to show that graphite foil current collector batteries perform best. An elevated concentration of water-in-salt electrolyte can broaden the electrochemical stability window, which enables these batteries to show excellent discharge performance, with a reversible specific capacity of 167 mAh g −1 at a discharge current density of 0.1 A g −1 , increasing the active material utilization to 69.6% of theoretical capacity. In addition, the batteries maintained a discharge capacity of 152 mAh g −1 after 800 cycles, with a capacity retention rate of 91%, which is better than most pre-reported values. The charging and discharging mechanisms of the positive electrode were analyzed using Raman, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The expansion of the operational voltage in supercapacitors (SCs) through the utilization of water-in-salt electrolytes (WISEs) has garnered considerable attention for achieving elevated energy density. However, the poor rate performance of assembled SCs persists due to the heightened viscosity of WISEs (e.g., 17.0 mol kg −1 NaClO 4 ), so designing the porous structure of electrode materials to improve the rate performance of SC in WISEs has become a research focus. In this study, we present a straightforward approach to fabricate hierarchical porous carbon spheres, designing to expedite ion infilling and transport within WISE-based SCs. The hollow porous carbon is synthesized via one-step pyrolysis process, wherein the decomposition of inner colloid particles yields gases, while the outer resorcinol–formaldehyde resin carbonizes to form a spherical shell. In the WISE of 17.0 mol kg −1 NaClO 4 , the resulting symmetric SCs exhibit an operational voltage of 2.6 V and significantly improved rate capability with a capacitance retention of 47.7 % at 100 A g −1 . Notably, the energy density can reach 31.0 Wh kg −1 at a power density of 2.4 kW kg −1 . Even under high power density conditions of 120.0 kW kg −1 , the energy density of 14.7 Wh kg −1 can remain. Additionally, the SC device manifests an impressive capacitance retention of 99.1 % after 20,000 cycles, showcasing exceptional cyclic stability. This research introduces a novel synthesis strategy for hierarchical porous carbon materials, enabling the development of high-rate SCs with both elevated energy density and power density.

Zinc (Zn) metal anodes have been extensively investigated in aqueous Zn-ion batteries (AZIBs). Nevertheless, severe dendrite issues caused by uneven ion diffusion and Zn deposition greatly influence the stability and safety of AZIBs. Herein, a novel three-electrode tubular cell assembled from simple materials is constructed for both electrochemical measurement and visual characterization. Measured by the tubular cell, a water-in-salt electrolyte (WiSE) exhibits excellent ionic conductivity (33.29 mS cm–1) and reduced corrosivity, which is prepared by incorporating cellulose and polyethylene glycol (PEG) into concentrated zinc chloride (ZnCl2) solution. The results reveal that the functional groups of cellulose and PEG in WiSE can regulate the solvation structure of Zn2+, thereby alleviating consecutive side reactions and inhibiting the formation of byproducts. The inherent ion channels formed by the polymer chains and the physical barriers constructed by PEG on the Zn surface further facilitated the uniform deposition of Zn2+ along the (002) crystal plane, enabling the Zn symmetric battery to achieve an ultralong cycle life of 1000 h at a current density of 2 mA cm–2.
